Jeb Bush endorses Romney for president

NBC's Chuck Todd talks to msnbc's Thomas Roberts about how Jeb Bush's endorsement of Mitt Romney could add to the push to end the GOP primary infighting.

Jeb Bush endorsed Mitt Romney for president on Wednesday, giving the former Massachusetts governor another important boost from the prominent political clan.

Bush, a figure whom many Republicans had urged to seek the presidency, called Romney this morning to inform him of his plan to endorse, according to a Romney campaign official.

The former Florida governor joins his father, former President George H.W. Bush, in endorsing Romney. Jeb Bush's brother, former President George W. Bush, has not made an endorsement in the race.

Jeb Bush said in a statement:

Congratulations to Governor Mitt Romney on his win last night and to all the candidates for a hard fought, thoughtful debate and primary season.  Primary elections have been held in thirty-four states, and now is the time for Republicans to unite behind Governor Romney and take our message of fiscal conservatism and job creation to all voters this fall.  I am endorsing Mitt Romney for our Party’s nomination.  We face huge challenges, and we need a leader who understands the economy, recognizes more government regulation is not the answer, believes in entrepreneurial capitalism and works to ensure that all Americans have the opportunity to succeed.

As Bush's statement indicates, his endorsement comes at a point in the primary where Republicans, following Romney's win in last night's Illinois primary by a wide margin, may begin to rally around Romney's candidacy. A popular figure within the GOP, Bush had been one of the few major Republicans yet to make an endorsement.

Jeb Bush

Fiscal Conservatism?? Who the hell is he trying to kid. Republicans have been reckless, radical and dishonest since they began practicing "Voodoo Economics". They took a balanced budget, a budget surplus and a thriving economy and turned it into the worst economic disaster since the First Great Republican Depression.

You would have to be an imbecile or a Republican to believe this nonsense.

Johndevine: you haven't a clue what you are talking about. The budget surplus you speak of was during the Clinton years, but was a result of a republican controlled congress. Republicans are responsible for that. Also, the 8 years of GW Bush were years of prosperity and low unemployment levels even after the 9/11 attacks. Bush was forced to run up the national debt, a lot, to ramp up national security and the airlines, and NY city, plus go after Al Qaeda. It wasn't until the last months of 2008 that the mortgage crisis came about and the economy faltered. Obama, in 3 years and 2 months has added more $$$ to the national debt then Bush did in 8 years

JeezusismyDog - The deficits under Bush were clearly going down until the housing market crashed. The surpluses under Clinton were a direct result of the dot com boom and nothing to do with government spending or who was in office. The repeal of Glass-Steagall led to our current situation. Here is the quote from Bill Clinton's book admitting it was a mistake. The Republicans and Democrats both bear responsibility for our current situation. The link below is a very informative non-partisan view of what led to our current situation.

I made some mistakes, too, though not the ones I've been most widely critized for: aggressively enforcing the Community Reinvestment Act and signing the bill repealing the Glass-Steagall Act, the Depression-era law requiring commercial and investment banking to be done by separate institutions.

@dixie girl - think again!!!! It was George Bush and his republican cronies that got us into a false war in Iraq. George is the one who started borrowing billions of dollars from the Chinese to fund the false war. His company and Cheney's company were illegally assigned (should have been a bid job) to support the troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. So the billions borrowed by Bush and his cronies paid their companies who in turn put millions of dollars into their personal accounts. in simpler terms borrow the money so thier companies are insured payment thus insuring they get payment into their personal bank accounts. So in other words George and gang started the huge deficit and made money as thousands of US soldiers gave their life fighting the false war. So in other words they have Chinese "blood money" in their personal accounts. If you have not noticed the economy is getting better despite the republicans trying to put roadblocks up against Obama. Understand what is going on before you make false statements.

the worst governor our state ever had ,the man who the state supreme court twice shot down his plan to take tax dollars to support private schools. Public money to support private enterprise, the man who gave us the f cat test to judge how public schools performed so that he could take away their funding and give it to private education, it started a boom in new private schools who defrauded the state government of millions until they could be caught. next to him the only worse endorsement romney could get would be his brother, the man who took pres. Clintons tax surplus and instead of lowereing the deficit gave the money back and tripled our deficit team Bush what a joke, to bad the joke is on us!

We are headed for a financial debt crisis no matter who wins the elections in November; our national debt has grown too large, too fast and continues to spiral upward. Corporations know it, which is why they are maintaining huge balance sheets and keeping money on the sidelines instead of investing it by growing their operations in this country. Those with financial assets and have the benefit of good financial advice know it and continue preparations to deal with it, which is why they maintain a conservative posture ready to act as the crisis hits. It is remarkably easy to prepare for a financial crisis when you can see it coming. At this point the only real question is how deep an economic crisis it will be.

Romney is the best prepared in terms of skills and experience to help us deal with the coming debt crisis. That does not mean that there won’t be considerable pain and suffering, even if he can get Congress to go along with the needed tough medicine. But at least we would avoid the catastrophic result of another 4 years of Obamanomics. One of my favorite sayings is fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. Should Obama win in November I will hunker down in protective mode and ride out the storm. I will have protected myself and my family. The cries of woe will come from those who put the community organizer in office for another term to bail them out and share some of what I have protected to maintain a comfortable lifestyle. My response will be simple, “no way”. You made your bed and you get to lie in it.

Perhaps the most critical measure of our economic health as a country is our total national debt to GDP ratio. An economy hits the danger zone when the ratio exceeds 100%. The following numbers show how Obama’s policies have failed this country.

U.S. Total National Debt to GDP ratio:

1992 – 60% (Bush Sr. last year in office)

2000 – 60% (Clinton last year in office)

2006 – 63% (Last year of Republican Congress)

2008 – 70% (Bush Jr. last year in office)

              2009 – 85% (Obama 1st year in office)

              2010 – 93% (Obama 2nd year in office)

              2011 – 102% (Obama 3rd year in office)

              2012 – 105% (estimated to exceed)

Cutting and pasting BS info from some Republican based website doesn't show anything. Bush NEVER paid for ANYTHING, he just pushed the bills off into the future for the next president. Why are you Republicans sooooo stupid you refuse to view the overall picture.

BTW- the day before Bush Sr. left office he transferred debt he accumulated onto the national debt, but I never hear you idiots touting that. Or how about your great Ray-Gun that said in his own words that taking the national debt from $800 Billion to 2.3 Trillion during his term was his greatest FAILURE. Oh, but you won't talk about that either.

The apologizing is what I didn't care for I completed two tours of duty in the middle east having met several dignitaries (The military has overseas "homeport" training ) to teach Americans how not to piss off people in that country, they say nothing about apologizing to your guests!

Probably still is but this information is in hush mode. So again before you make false statements get the facts straight. I'm sure if you know how to google on your computer and look up Bush family ties with oil tycoons in the middle east you will find lots of information that will tell it like it is. They are a greedy family and it does not matter to them who they destroy to keep making money off of oil. So open your eyes and ears and try to understand the truth before you make an ass of yourself again.

So what do you call the folks who fell for the rhetoric from Obama, the snake oil salesman, retarded?? Considering the incompetence demonstrated by Obama over the past 3 years, no person in their right mind would consider voting for him again.

Most of our wealthy elite are Democrats. I assume that they'll vote for Obama as they did in 2008.

The one thing we will hear today is that Mr. Obama is attending a photo op intended to make it look like he was approved the "oil pipeline" Watch for it on the NBC tonight. It makes it look like he has approved the entire pipeline.

I'm more than a little surprised that Jeb would endorse anyone at this point. His name is still in the hat as a possible alternative candidate if this goes to a brokered convention.

I would never vote for him, I'm just saying that he seems to be working against his own best interest here.

Then again Palin is that hat as well. He may just be trying to bail out before she sets it on fire.

The bush-scum has been a blight on American politics -- and the entire world --for decades. The damage these self-described "blue-blood" criminal elitist-scum have made for is almost unimaginable.

And, make no mistake, the stink of kkkarl rover is always lurking in the shadows of the bush-thieves... and you can bet kkkarl-boy gave the nod for the timing of this pathetic endorsement to put jeb's puss in the news.

The whole right-wing fascist "New world Order" plan was first torpedoed by President Clinton knocking out bush-maggot-senior after only one term (and only one war).

And, when these scum fixed the 2000 election (FL), and 2004 election (OH), you see what the fascist GOP delivered... total rapiong of our economy, two unfunded wars to steal energy resources for their constiuency, anf handing huge tax breaks to their upper 1% criminal cohorts...

These samne scum are still trying to push jeb-thief down our throats, and trying to portray him as some sort of GOP-savior... whenm in fact, jeb-bush represents the END OF AMERICA AS WE ONCE KNEW IT!!!

The GOP is not a political party and has not been one since bush-senior sat his stink in the White House as VP to reagan. That point marked the beginning of unprecedented lawlessness, manipuated wars, and a march to literally handing the entire economy over to the upper 1% criminal elite.

What the bush-made, kkarl rover guided GOP is today -- is a wall-street owned and elitist managed TREASONOUS CRIMINAL ENTERPRISE, period.

jeb is just part of the scheme... looking for any small opportunity to get in power.

No Larry -- this nation has survived people like George W. Bush and Richard Nixon and we will continue after January 20, 2017 when President Obama leaves office. I remember you right wing fanatics saying the same thing about Kennedy, LBJ, Ford, Carter, and Clinton. Your unending gloom and doom has never been close to coming true. The sky is not falling.
