GETTYSBURG, PA -- A senior adviser to Rick Santorum's presidential campaign said on Tuesday that the primary season had not yet reached halftime and and sought to downplay the importance of tonight's Illinois primary.
John Brabender, Santorum's senior strategist, deflected questions about the former Pennsylvania senator's performance in the Land of Lincoln, instead focusing on recent electoral successes.
"We had a pretty good last week where we won Kansas and Alabama and Mississippi. And now we'll see if Mitt Romney can finally win one that's in the heart of America, if you will," he said. "He's had a little trouble doing that in the last few weeks."
Brabender -- who made these comments before the networks called Illinois for Romney -- acknowledged that they do not feel like they have a shot at competing with Romney to win the state. He said, "Whoever wins the state doesn't matter as much as who wins the different congressional delegates, so that's how we'll be keeping score tonight."
But the longtime Santorum adviser also made clear that a loss would not slow down the campaign.
"We're not even at halftime yet. I think we have to have two more states to get to the half-way point roughly," said Brabender. "And so, you know, we'll get through tonight."

The best Santo can do is take it to the convention, where he'll be knocked out in the first ballot
Sorry Rick.
The
Feisty Redhead, errr, Fat Lady has sung. The Party is over.
Now he wants to downplay the IL primary? LOL
Santorum had been saying how much he needed this primary before the election. Now that the results are in and he is getting whipped, he wants to downplay the importance of the IL primary.
Unbelievable!
Look at his record and how he bills himself as "a conservative" for cryin out loud. He's full of BS
How on earth can you claim disbelief at this point? It has gone beyond. Santorum and his ilk are so busy spinning, it is no wonder they get so dizzy and make incoherent and contradictory statements.
That's true Rick, it's not halftime, but the Santorum show ended awhile ago. The problem is, you haven't noticed. Although, I must admit that I like the metaphor and therefore we Democrats will be clapping when President Obama spikes the ball in November.
Hi Tom, don't celebrate yet. While I agree and think he will win, we cannot sit back and relax. Remember what happened in 2004 when we thought that there was no way that Bush could be reelected?
I've volunteered to help ensure that everyone who might have trouble getting a valid voter ID, has one so they can vote.
No doubt Matthew, and we can't underestimate the cleverness of the GOP to manufacture a controversy that they can exploit. Efn bastards.
tom,
totally agree .
My question: Where are all the Romney supporters tonight on FR?They should be lighting up the threads with "Our guy is...."
Only WCA statement to Santourm: the party is over . Where are all the other conservatives taking their vicotry lap?
Half time my arse .. feels like quad-drupble O.T. The K.O. that never happens.
Oops.
I have finally figured out this election. It comes down to knees ! Rom(knee) they bend every which way from flip flopping. Santorum spends all this time on his knees being more catholic than the pope. Gingrich usually has someone else down on their knees. Paul is waiting for knee replacement. When Obama is on his knees. Democrats think he's listening for imput from the people. Republicans think he's facing Mecca to pray !
Santorum's concession speech: he's actually bragging about his ignorance of the science of climate change.
Hey, folks, at least he's consistently dumb.
The more ignorance he displays, the more he will be loved by the conservative base.
Interesting results: compared to polls, Mitt Romney is overperforming significantly in Illinois (+7 compared to RCP average). Santorum overperforming slightly (+3). Newt Gingrich underperforming (-5.3). So much for the theory that almost 100% of Gingrich supporters flock to Santorum.
The RNC may have stuffed a few more ballots to make a Romney "cushion." God knows this voting business is just a formality, Romney has already been chosen by the establishment.
Romney today said, "for women get their own health insurance if they wanted it"
Not like it was in the 70's when women fought like Grizzly Bears defending women's rights.
There are more women today, . . . . yet it seems their attitude is, oh darn those guys.
What happened to the internal fortitude of today's women ?
I wish you guys at the Santorum campaign would see the great damage they are doing by continuing to oppose Romney. Not only are they damaging the Party but they are damaging every American's chances at getting someone in the White House who is not BO. Makes you wonder if Gingrich and Santorum are trying to bring down what seems to be a great candidate to beat the incumbent. The Dems are not concerned about Santorum, Ron Paul or Newt. They are very concerned about Romeny however.
Have you seen Romney in person? He's not a great candidate. Not only does he lack the people skills of a grocery store bagger, he's just not that bright.
I'm curious amy.
Have you ever met Obama?
From the ranks, search you tube for Ouzzy88 and watch Decision 2012, New Party? For the People
If Santorum had the resources that Romney has available to him, what a different game it would be... GOPers gonna have a nominee they dont like!!!!
Hey Rick, go home and feast on your corporate success! You ain't gonna beat the Mex. corporate puppet's SUPERPAC! Give your Superpac money to charity, not the "so-called" NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS/FOUNDATIONS but directly to charity! That's the ONLY WAY you can defeat the MEX. If you do good, it comes right back to you! If you do wrong, guess what comes back to you?
That may be so but your game is over
Keep on truckin' Rick ol' boy, all the way to the convention. The more you and Newt are in the race the more we see gaffs and stupidity from your side. Eventually Mitt will win the nomination but will be bruised and beaten down by the winds of daily changes in campaigns. Weather vanes are like that, you know. But you keep truckin', there Ricky and provide more fodder for November to use against Mitt or whoever gets the GOP/TP nomination.
I don’t know how everyone else feels but all of the ranting and raving about what God wants, by ministers, politicians and others, strikes me as being a bit much, as really being presumptuous. The individual doctrines taught in all religions, without exception, state that sincere humility is the prescribed way, is what God requires of His people. Now the question is, how do these supposedly knowledgeable people who are so caught up in their righteous egos, touting themselves, judging others and speaking for God, ever think that they are not really just offending God, actually going against His way? Simply a logical curiosity as it appears they are totally missing the message and rather are just caught up in being too pretentiously proud to even see their hypocrisy. I suspect that to really be consistent with the teachings one actually needs to leave the judging to God and strive to have humble compassion for all others ... but then that is just my thinking.
It's still mathematically possible for Mr. Santorum. to win the GOP nomination--all he needed to do is to baptize, every Mormon, atheists, and other Protestant denominations in America to becoming Catholics,....dudes and everyone else who support Mr. Santorum’s candidacy are the very conservative voters in this country. I hope that when it comes to religious convictions; they wouldn’t feel holier than the Holy Father’s appointed Bishops—this is precisely why Mr. S. is losing votes throughout the entire GOP primaries; nice work catholic apologists!
