SHREVEPORT, La. -- Newt Gingrich slammed Robert De Niro’s comments last night at a fundraiser for President Obama, demanding that the president apologize for the actor's joke that America isn't yet again ready for a white first lady.
“I do want to say one thing on behalf of both my wife, and on behalf of Karen Santorum and on behalf of Ann Romney, and that is I think Robert De Niro is wrong,” Gingrich said as he began his speech at Strawn's Eat Shop Too. “I think the country is ready for a new first lady, and he doesn’t have to describe it in racial terms.”
At an Obama for America fundraiser in New York City Monday night, attended by Michelle Obama, De Niro joked about a possible GOP first lady.
"Callista Gingrich. Karen Santorum. Ann Romney. Now do you really think our country is ready for a white first lady?" De Niro asked at the top of his remarks at Locanda Verde restaurant as the crowd yelled “no.” “Too soon, right?," he said.
A spokeswoman for the first lady issued a statement shortly after Gingrich concluded his remarks, calling De Niro’s comments “inappropriate.”
"We believe the joke was inappropriate," Olivia Alair, campaign press secretary to the first lady, said in a statement.
Gingrich criticized the remarks as “inexcusable” and called on President Obama to personally apologize.
“It is exactly wrong, it divides the country,” the former House speaker said. “If people on the left want to talk about radio talk show hosts, then everybody in the country ought to hold the president accountable when somebody at his event says something as utterly, totally unacceptable as Robert De Niro said last night, and I call on the president to apologize for him.”
While Gingrich stood up for all three women involved in the actor’s joke, he of course has his favorite.
“I have a personal preference, obviously, for Callista to be the first lady,” the speaker said to cheers in the room. “But, I tell you, I would be very proud and very honored to have Ann Romney as the first lady or Karen Santorum as the first lady. I think that just what De Niro said is just beyond the pale and he should be ashamed of himself.”

Gingrich makes comments all the time that are offense to the general population but gets offended if someone else says something that is negative toward him, his wife or any other GOP contender.
Typical double standard from one of the least likely to be nominated for the presidency.

why should Obama have to apologize for anything De Niro said? Once again Newt is way out in right field. If he wants to demand an apology, why isn't he demanding it from De Niro?
By the same logic, Gingrich should apologize for fellow Santorum's comments: 'Unemployment doesn't matter to me."
Gingrich should apologize for a litany of fellow Romney's comments: "I like being able to fire people".
Gingrich should apologize for fellow Ryan's comment: To pay for the the additional $150,000 tax handout Ryan is proposing for the very wealthy he responded, "I will leave that to the Ways and Means Committee'".
Apologize for your fellow GOP-ers words Mr. Gingrich!
And that includes Koch Leader Lobbyist Norquist, and all your no-conscience GOP Leaders.

Last time I checked Limbaugh, Maher, De Niro, Hannity, Koch, Norquist, et cetera are not running for any office therfore rendering anything they say no more important than what you or I have to say. Each of those guys only posess one vote.
C'mon voters, stay focused on the real issues and candidates themselves. If Mr. Gingrich says something absurd (and this one was pretty silly) the joke is on him, but to take the said absurdity seriously puts the joke over on you. It takes a little effort to find the substance in all the campaign noise.

Gingrich got so offended by a JOKE, it would seem he thought the joke was mainly aimed at him, and his wife, because she's whiter than he is, and he's about as white as they come.

I would like to know when did referring someone as white or black become racist. now if De Niro said whitey or honky or something, I would understand. but white is a shorter reference to Caucasian Americans and black is a shorter reference to African Americans, people are getting out of hand with accusations of racism.

These people, Newt, Mitt, Rick, and many many other Republican politicians, said they couldn't prevent someone from calling the President a Muslim, a terrorist - couldn't even condemn Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke derogatory names - but they want the President to apologize for DeNiro?

Hey Newt as soon as you or one of your other presidential wanna-be's apologizes for Rush Limbaugh's comments over three days regarding Sandra Fluke, then MAYBE we'll take you're being offended seriously and POSSIBLY give it some merit.

Yeah - that would have been HUGE so he does make somewhat of a point that sometimes we all have to remember that what's good for the goose is good for the gander. You can't get your knickers all in a bunch when someone calls you names or makes racist jokes or sexist comments and then do the same to the other side and not expect to get called out on it.

As a Republican, I am embarrassed to see that the GOP cannot find a more meaningful candidate – as in someone who really knows something about making a budget and keeping to it, creating jobs, and, caring about people who are less fortunate.

If McCain or someone had said that it would have been out of taste because at that time, there had NEVER been a black first lady.

The reason for anything the right says about this is because of the double standard. Who really cares what DeNiro says. Who cares what anyone really says? In fact notice the reaction against Newt for what he said... the left is more angry about him than what Deniro said. See the double standard?
This is quite possibly the clearest example of both the problem and the solution, to the cause of the r/tp/con party. That this mindset has the ability to cause such bad consequences for the entire country, is truly frightening.
The republican party would be a lot more beneficial to themselves and the country as a whole if they moved closer to where President Obama currently sits in the political divide. That BO is the best example of what the gop stood for even as little as 20 years ago, shows just how far the r/tp has drifted toward the delusional.
This country needs at least 2 viable parties just to keep some semblance of checks and balances. The current iteration of the gop doesn't even show up as much more than another version of the Spanish Inquisition. Gwaddamn! I've been politically incorrected! A representative of my health insurance called me today. One of her 1st questions was; are you Hispanic, Asian, Native American, Black or Caucasian? Then she quickly explained " Caucasian" means White. I told her I was all of the last 3. But what color?, she pushed. "I pass as white", I told her, "probably because one of my white ancestors got a better toe hold while either becoming impregnated or while impregnating." This seemed to piss her off. Insisted I must tell her my skin color, and that I must pick the color from her liatny selection. Well, I reiterated "white", more to get rid of the Ill mannered woman than any other reason. I did all this without knowing I was actually being "politically incorrected" in the worst way. If I work at this a while I might even get to feeling violated. Wonder if that's the way Newt feels? Once upon a time, back when I was a kid and couldn't vote, the Republican Party stood for fiscal responsibility and, it seemed, pretty much left social issues to the Democrats to promote, present and make a case for and the Republicans calculate out how much could be done now and how long it would take to responsibly do the rest. Yes, this is a very simplified version but the point being that the parties worked together for the benefit of the country.
I wish more Republicans such as yourself spoke up and cleaned the mess you inherited ie: get the christoban (I didn't capitalize in respect to the REAL Christians who LIVE their faith instead of screaming shrilly and hypocritically) OUT of our politics (You may have to gt an exorcist at this point)

I stopped appologizing for others when my kids got old enough to understand responsibility. I thought that was what republicans claim to fame was, personal responsibility.

For those who are comparing DeNiro's comment to Limbaugh's, let's look at the differences.
1. Rush was on a public forum and De Niro was at a dinner with a certain number of invited guest. If none of them had opened their mouths we wouldn't even know he said it.
2. Limbaugh repeated it not once not twice but three times on three different days.
3. DeNiro said it once.
4. No one asked the GOP to apologize for Limbaugh.
5. GOP demanded Obama apologize for DeNiro.

I do not like Newt. I will not vote for Newt. Yes, Newt says things that are incorrect to say the least. I wish someone besides Newt had spoke up about this. I typically vote for Democrats, not always. I vote for who I believe is right for America. I do not vote based on the color of a person's skin. I vote on the facts.
However, if I or anyone else makes a racial comment, then they are called on it. Is this always true? No. It depends on what the racial comment is. If I had said we are not ready for another black first lady, I would have been totally wrong and I would have been berated for it. DeNiro said we are not ready for another white first lady. Is he being berated for it? Not yet. Was he wrong? Yes. You can't have it both ways. Racism is racism either way. I don't believe any comments are appropriate about race. Let race be gone and let's vote based on a person's character, on their history, on their promises (and if they kept the promises they said they would do), and on their belief in America and her people. If Americans don't stand up for America, who will. This means all Americans, regardless of their skin color. So yes, it is our responsibility as Amercians to question anyone who speaks inappropriately about race. No matter which way.
DeNiro should apologize at the least. Also, if the President of the United States is at a dinner for himself and someone speaks inappropriately, then as the leader of this great nation, then does he not have a responsibility to say at least that it was inappropriate. Regardless of what anyone else does or does not do. He is our leader and he should stand up for what it right. If he does not, then how does he expect the rest of the country to do the right thing.

I don't know Michelle, but I know a number of people who worked with her at her old firm. They speak very highly of her both professionally and as a person. Apparently she expects excellence in herself and those around her (a very hard woman). They admired her for that, and didn't mention anything about her being racist at all.
To me, people who know the person directly and worked with them for a prolonged period are the best character witnesses.

I would really love to discuss the thesis with Mrs. Obama. I do think without having a 1st hand conversation with the writer no one can truly say what her specific beliefs are. If you are just going to "assume" I can see how a person might infer that she has issues with whites.

Michelle Obama's Master's thesis is readily available on the internet. It isn't 'racist'. It discusses the extent to which previous African American graduates of her university did or did not 'rub elbows' with white folks after graduation, and the degree to which that behavior may have affected their world view, especially with respect to an optimistic outlook. It may reflect angst on the part of the author, and uncertainty as to how a young educated black woman fits in to American society, but it isn't 'racist' by any stretch of the imagination.
Try reading it. There are no generalizations demeaning to 'white people' or anything of the kind.
If you relied on primary sources, instead of borrowing your 'opinions' from others, you would know this.

I was born to two American citizens in a military hospital and my birth certificate does NOT have my footprints on it. And under the line where the signature goes it reads "Physician or midwife, father or mother".

Absolutely! People get all outraged over entertainers, and yet some want to still defend their "entertainers" (on either side...). When will people realize that people like Rush, Maddow, Maher, and Beck are nothing but JUST entertainers?? What I find odd is that the public got all upset over Rush (and rightly so), but not any of that same anger was directed at Maher for his comments about another human being.
Maher is at most a pseudo new show. He doesn't hold himself as anything more. We seem to have reached a state as a people where we can't distinguish the difference between fact and fiction. Maher is not the equivalent of Rush, because Rush claims to be news, Maher does not. Here's the difference, if a clown squirts water on you, you might be upset for getting wet, but probably shouldn't have a complaint. If the guy on the street squirts you with water, you might be able to press battery charges.

My parents moved across the country to escape the high heating bills in the Northeast thanks to the oil crisis. Unfortunately, they didn't have jobs lined up before they moved and it took my dad longer to get a job than he had anticpated. So that their 3 kids would have food, they sucked up their pride and they used food stamps for 3 months. They were embarrasd about it - I didn't find out about it until I was an adult and my mom let in slip in conversation. Anyway, my dad found a job and paid taxes for the next 30 years until he retired. He raised 3 children that all have college degrees, have good paying jobs, and have been paying taxes for years. So, it's not always people who don't want to work. And by the way, I'm guessing you have medical insurance paid for or subsidized by your employer. If you don't, and something catestrophic happens, you won't be able to afford health care either.
That was what was supposed to be the purpose of Food Stamps, Longing. Your parents did the right thing. That was the original intention of that program. However, there are many millions who don't think about anything but what the gov't can "give them". That would include housing costs in the form of reduced rent, food stamps, free cell phones, money aide, childcare aide, free medical, etc. All stuff that we who work pay for. If they only used these things for 3 months until they "got back on their feet" and went to work, that would be a wondeful thing. But that's not how they see it, it's just a free ride through life for most of them.

Thx for sharing that story. That's what food stamps are for. People who need TEMPORARY assistance to bridge the gap to a better future. Unfortunately it is a VERY ABUSED program these days. I'll bet your parents didn't buy TV's or fancy clothes either. If you've ever been around a community where food stamps are common (and I have) you'd understand why so many ppl are saying we need to fix these entitlement programs.
Those of us who want entitlement re-form aren't cold hearted. We simply want to end the ABUSE of said programs to ensure they are around for those who TRULY need them...like your family.

Mark you missed the point, it was not about BC. Birth control is covered by almost every health insurance plan. It was about making a Catholic institution that does not believe in it, pay for it. To me she wanted it both ways. Go to a great Catholic institution. Oh and tell them what they should be doing. Simple if BC that important to you go some where it's covered, she obviously had the grades. Or get separate Health coverage.

Riverhawk: Georgetown's health plan DOES in fact cover birth control pills, IF those pills are prescribed by a doctor as treatment for a hormonal condition or some other malady. The policy DOES NOT cover the use of such pills as a contraceptive, nor should it, if Georgetown wants to stick by its Catholic principles. The government has no right to demand that a Catholic institution violate the dictates of its religious faith. I believe same holds for students. If not there are other Universities to attend. She wants a good Catholic education, without a Catholic education.
