Subscribe to RSSDespite louder and more serious talk among Republican insiders about the possibility of a brokered convention, the Obama campaign once again kept its focus on Mitt Romney.
In a conference call today to respond to Romney’s speech on economic freedom today at the University of Chicago, the Obama campaign slammed Romney's tax plans today and said he faces "a significant trust deficit" with voters, particularly on the issue of gas prices.
"Gov. Romney did not mention the issue of energy and gas prices, and I think that's something that's on the mind of all Americans right now," said Cecilia Rouse, a Princeton economics professor, who was a member of the president’s Council of Economic Advisers before leaving the White House in February.
Rouse went on to argue that reducing America's dependence on foreign oil sources would ease the burden of price spikes – and she took aim at Romney for failing to address fuel costs.
But the White House was unable to pass a comprehensive energy policy through Congress even with broad Democratic majorities in the president’s first two years.
The conference call and focus on energy also come as rising gas prices threaten President Obama’s recent momentum and his upcoming tour of swing states to tout new proposals on the subject.
Asked if President Obama's efforts to address those costs are breaking through to the public, Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt accused Republicans of failing to give the president credit for new drilling initiatives.
"They're completely distorting the record here," LaBolt said, specifically of GOP candidates of Obama's record on Gulf drilling. "And I think for a candidate like Mitt Romney who's already facing a significant trust deficit with voters across the ideological spectrum that that would compound his issues."
Without mentioning Newt Gingrich by name, LaBolt also took aim at "elected officials who are going out and saying gas is going to be $2.50 if they get elected."
On Solyndra, the energy company the president touted and went belly up after receiving a government grant, the campaign would only say that Romney would "turn his back on the clean-energy sector."
Responding specifically to his speech today, Rouse accused Romney of structuring a tax plan that would hurt middle-income Americans.
"His plan actually makes our tax system more regressive and really will not help out the middle class," she said.
And, touting the White House's regulatory reforms, she disputed the widely repeated GOP critique that regulation generally strangles job creation.
"There is not actually any evidence that regulatory burden actually has a meaningful impact on employment or on the economy now," she contended.

Obama trots out another member of the elite academia, a previous member of his Council of Economic Advisors, the Council of Economic Advisors that authored "The Job Impact of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Plan" .... predicted on January 10, 2009 that unemployment would be less than 8% if the stimulus was passed .... the same report co-authored by Jared Berstein who says today that unemployment will not even be below 8% after 4 years of Obamanomics .... to talk about .... a TRUST DEFICIT!

Oil is a part, but a declining part of our energy future. Natural Gas, Electric, Solar and Biofuels are the future along with some nuclear. Oil is a commodity based on futures.
We had no future supply due to current policies before Bush went to Congress to open up access to our greatest resource ... Bush opened our greatest resources ... speculators were convinced there would be a future supply and the price came down.
Since this is so difficult ... one more time ... oil is priced not primarily on what supply and demand is today, but the FUTURE supply and demand which Obama is destroying - hence rising prices again.
Sorry it is all over your head.

The drilling you do will take years to get to the...you guessed it...world market where,.that's right, they can charge whatever they want. The fact still remains. unless you nationalize the oil and natural gas resources here in the USA, its all gonna go on the world market.
But to do that means government takeover of the Oil and Gas industry. What a quandry for you conservatives. Obama could remove the gas tax, but then the highways and bridges wouldn't get funded and would continue to crumble not to mention adding to the deficit.
Oil and Natural GAs is a finite resource. and is not renewable. Electricity, Solar, Wind and Biofuels are. Sorry, Bob. They will be a part of our energy future. I was really disappointed in the 2010 mid-terms. Even with lies about creating jobs, I couldn't believe people would give the keys back to the GOP when it was the GOP policies that crashed our economy in the first place -- and after only two years (even short-term memories couldn't explain this).
The polarization in the media makes it hard to overcome right-wing BS, but even when it is debunked, it doesn't seem to have much effect. Like the pundit on Chris Matthews last week, who after admitting that production of more oil wouldn't have an impact on prices at the pump because oil is a commodity sold in the global market, and likewise the Keystone pipeline would only make it easier for Canadian oil to be sold on the global market -- the idiot went right back to the right-wing lies.
Also progressives and moderates have to get out the vote. I hope the Occupy youth, middle class workers (teachers, firefighters, etc.), women who are being attacked, etc. can keep Teapublicans out of power until they clean up their act. Even seniors, I hope they can see what a horrible idea Paul Ryan's plan is. But the right-wing Echo Chamber and Cone of Silence is hard to break through.

On July 15, a sell-off begins after remarks by Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke indicating a significant fall in demand in the United States, the world's top consumer. That is the reason why prices were coming down. Unfortunately, we are not the only country dependent on oil.
Even though we are still the #1 country "addicted" to oil, China and India, each with a population in excess of 1 billion, are experiencing an expanding middle class that will likely use more gasoline over time. Even though our demand is down, prices are influenced by what the rest of the world is willing to pay for it.
Come on, you Republicans are supposed to be the "business" people. Why would an industry sell anything for less if they can sell it to someone else for more? Even if you "drill, baby drill" in this country, IT WILL STILL BE SOLD TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER.

Obama, Reid, Pelosi, Biden and the majority of democrats voted for it. Yes it was President Bush and his treasurer Secretary that asked for it, but it was actually congress that wrote it.
Remember it was Obama who called President Bush and asked him to keep $350 billion for him to use when he became President. BTW, the money from the financial bail out was all paid back with interest.
The GM loan hasn't been repaid. The GM bailout was illegal. The sweet deal was given to unions. What about the "Obama Trust Deficit"? All of this spending on green technology research and development does not seem to have gone anywhere. I hear of failures such as Solyndra but where are the successes? Where I live the generation of electricity has not changed much at all. I am still dependent of gasoline to get to work. I do not believe that our President has had any effect on the climate.
Before the stimulus bill was passed Obama's administration put out a report projecting how unemployment would progress with the stimulus bill and without the stimulus bill. According to these projections the stimulus has had no beneficial effect upon the unemployment problem. Unemployment has been a little worse than if the stimulus bill had never been passed.
When running for office Obama said that deficit spending was bad and he vowed to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term. To do that the 2012 federal deficit must not exceed 229.27 billion dollars and both Obama's own White House and the CBO are predicting that is not going to happen. The White House is predicting a 2012 federal deficit of 1.33 trillion dollars. I estimate that the 2012 federal deficit alone will end up costing the tax payers more than 10 trillion dollars to repay if in 170 years. The White House is predicting huge deficits for at least another decade. And the President said that he was against deficit spending. How can anyone trust him?
The President needs to be reminded of some words of wisdom that were spoken back in March of 2006. The words were as true then as they are today.

It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government's reckless fiscal policies. The discussion was not about TARP but about the fact that bob said the financial meltdown was over in September of 2008 therefore it had no effect on gas prices coming down. They were coming down (accordning to bob) because Bush....asked Congress to open more land for drilling and poof, like magic, prices went down... The TARP comment was not to point fingers but to remind bob that his timeline if off- if the financial meltdown was over in Septemebr, why TARP.

The Obama administration and its allies in Congress have perpetrated more than their share of such mob-like actions. While it's hard to narrow them down, here's my stab at the government's top 10 constitutional violations since President Obama took office.
1. The individual mandate
No list of President Obama's constitutional violations would be complete without including the requirement that every American purchase health insurance, on penalty of civil fine. The individual mandate is unprecedented and exceeds Congress's power to regulate interstate commerce. If it is allowed to stand, Congress will be able to impose any kind of economic mandate as part of any kind of national regulatory scheme. Fortunately, the Supreme Court has a chance to strike this down during its current term.
2. Medicaid coercion
The Court will also be taking up Obamacare's massive intrusion on federal-state relations in the form of a coercive Medicaid expansion. The law compels states to drastically increase their Medicaid expenditures and reorganize their health care bureaucracies, on penalty of losing all(not just additional) Medicaid funds. No state contemplated such a program when it signed onto Medicaid — Arizona was the last to join, in 1982 — and now no state can afford to withdraw. Indeed, even if some withdrawal mechanism existed, withdrawn states' taxpayers would still be funding complying states' Medicaid programs. As the Supreme Court held inSouth Dakota v. Dole, there comes a point when "the financial inducement offered by Congress might be so coercive as to pass the point at which pressure turns into compulsion."
3. The Independent Payment Advisory Board (a.k.a. "The Death Panel")
IPAB is the group of 15 presidential appointees who, beginning in 2014, are tasked with reducing Medicare spending. Any decisions IPAB makes automatically become law that can only be overridden by a three-fifths majority vote in the Senate. Unlike other federal agencies, IPAB is subject to no external review — no public notification in advance of proposed rules or opportunity for comment, no administrative guidelines and no judicial review. Medicare comprises about 13 percent of the federal budget, so that's an awesome amount of power for Congress to delegate to unelected executive-branch bureaucrats. Indeed, it's so basic a violation of traditional separation of powers that there's no historical analog. The Goldwater Institute has filed a strong lawsuit challenging this (yet another) unprecedented aspect of Obamacare, which will continue wending its way through the lower courts regardless of how the Supreme Court rules on the individual mandate and Medicaid-coercion issues.
4. The Chrysler bailout
Building on the Bush administration's illegal use of TARP funds to bail out the auto industry, the Obama administration bullied Chrysler's secured creditors — who were entitled to "absolute priority" — into accepting 30 cents on the dollar, while junior creditors such as labor unions received much more. This subversion of creditor rights violates not just bankruptcy law but also the Constitution's Takings and Due Process Clauses. This blatant crony capitalism — government-directed industrial policy to help political insiders — discourages investors and generally undermines confidence in American rule of law.
5. Dodd-Frank
Intended to remedy weaknesses in the U.S. financial system — ensuring transparency and accountability — the Dodd-Frank financial "reform" empowered unlimited, unreviewable and often secret bureaucratic discretion. The administrative bodies the legislation created face no constraints on the exercise of arbitrary authority. For example, the Treasury Department now has broad and essentially unchecked power to seize banks and other financial entities that it determines are unsound but "too big to fail." The new Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and Financial Stability Oversight Council, meanwhile, craft, execute and interpret their own law. Due process and separation of powers issues abound.
6. The deep-water drilling ban
Following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, the Interior Department issued a blanket six-month moratorium on new oil and gas drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. A federal judge struck down that moratorium as arbitrary and capricious, but the government issued a new order to replace the one that was struck down. That order was subsequently withdrawn, but the judge was so shocked by the administration's conduct that he found the government in civil contempt of court.
7. Political-speech disclosure for federal contractors
In April of this year, President Obama released a draft executive order (still pending) that would require businesses with federal contracts to disclose independent expenditures on federal elections (political speech independent of candidates and parties). This order is intended to undermine the Supreme Court's Citizen United decision — allowing independent expenditures by corporations, unions and other associations — by discouraging federal contractors and their executives from engaging in political speech. Citizens United held that such expenditures do not enable the kind of quid pro quo corruption that campaign finance laws are allowed to regulate, so this draft executive order shows contempt for the First Amendment by chilling protected speech.
8. Taxing political contributions
Earlier this year, the IRS tried to muzzle political speech by asserting that donations to certain nonprofit advocacy groups (so-called 501(c)(4) organizations) would be subject to the gift tax. Historically, the IRS has not applied the gift tax in this way — donations to advocacy groups are not likely to be used to circumvent the estate tax — and when the IRS previously tried to tax political donations, it was rebuffed by the courts on the grounds that such transfers are not gifts (i.e., the donor is getting something in return). The IRS has since backed down, but the suspicion remains that it was trying to chill the political speech of those opposed to President Obama's policies, in violation of the First Amendment.
9. Graphic tobacco warnings
Late last year, the FDA issued regulations requiring cigarette manufacturers to display graphic warnings on all packs of cigarettes that must cover at least 50% of the packaging and graphically portray tobacco-related illnesses. These warnings violate the First Amendment because the government is compelling the cigarette manufacturers to discourage their customers from buying their lawful products. Last month, a federal judge blocked the new regulation, which was due to go into effect in January, but the administration is appealing.
10. Health care waivers
The Department of Health and Human Services has granted nearly 2,000 waivers to employers seeking relief from Obamacare's onerous regulations. Nearly 20 percent of these waivers went to gourmet restaurants and other businesses in Nancy Pelosi's San Francisco district. Nevada, home to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, got a blanket waiver, while Republican-controlled states like Indiana and Louisiana were denied. Even beyond the unseemly political favoritism, such arbitrary dispensations violate a host of constitutional and administrative law provisions ranging from equal protection to the "intelligible principle" required for congressional delegation of authority to cabinet agencies. Unlike 17th-century English monarchs, American presidents were not granted dispensing powers: As we've seen, the power to suspend a legal requirement can and will be used to arbitrarily favor the politically connected. Moreover, most of these waivers were never authorized by Congress in the first place!

If a budget isn't passed by Oct.1 for that fiscal year, every member of the house and senate has to forfeit their jobs to whoever came in second in their last election. And if it happens again, since most places have a third party candidate these days (whether its the Libertarian or the Green Party or someone else) then whoever came in third gets the seat. Bet that would solve a lot of problems and cut down on the partisan BS.
