If there's been one familiar refrain among Republicans during this presidential primary, it's been that the hard-fought battle between Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and other contenders hasn't hurt the party – arguably, it's even strengthened it.
"Don't always assume that a primary fight is a bad thing," Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus said Mar. 7 on CNN. "In fact, I think it's the opposite. I think it's going to be great for our party."
And frequently, as a point of reference, Republicans point to the long – and, at times, bitter – intra-party battle between Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton in 2008 as evidence that an extended race to the nomination isn’t necessarily a hindrance to winning the White House.
But there are important differences between the two cycles. Some of them might serve as a warning sign for the GOP, such as less money and a more damaged brand. And some might give the party encouragement, like more enthusiasm among Republicans.
Of course, an important caveat: In some ways, it’s difficult to compare 2008 (a race without an incumbent and with two history-making primary candidates) with 2012 (when there’s a sitting president in the Oval Office).
Bank accounts
At this point in the Democratic primary in 2008, Obama and Clinton had each heavily outraised Republicans’ fundraising haul through the first couple of months of 2012.
In February of 2008, just as the Democratic campaign had appeared to shift into a two-person race, the Obama campaign raised $55 million for the month, and had $39 million in the bank going into March. Clinton raised $35 million over the same time period, and had $29 million in cash on hand. (It’s worth noting, though, that much of Clinton’s money was reserved for the general election, and she couldn’t use in the primary season.)
Compare that to the money raised by Santorum and Romney over February, according to their own campaigns’ estimates (official numbers have not yet been filed with the Federal Election Commission). Romney raised $11.5 million in February and Santorum raised about $9 million. Romney had just $7.3 million in the bank at the end of the month, though, suggesting that his campaign is spending at a rate that could threaten to bleed him dry by November, especially if the primary continues for a while.
A discrepancy would suggest some diminished enthusiasm for the Republican candidates this cycle, at least at first glance.
But there are some important things to keep in mind: First, overall fundraising is down in 2012 versus 2008, in part due to the impact of a deep recession that onset after the 2008 primary.
More Republican money has also flowed to super PACs that support the various GOP candidates. These groups didn’t exist in the last Democratic primary, and one Romney super PAC alone, Restore Our Future, has already spent over $30 million this primary season.
The brand
Perhaps the most illuminating figures on the impact of the Republican primary campaign comes from a series of national NBC News/Wall Street Journal polls and the exit polling conducted of voters in key battleground state primaries.
By March of 2008, both Obama and Clinton enjoyed net-positive favorability ratings among the public at large (Obama: 51 positive, 28 negative; Clinton: 45 positive, 43 negative according to the March 2008 NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll).
Romney and Santorum haven’t fared as well with the general public, according to this month’s numbers, also taken from the most recent NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll. Romney has a 28 percent positive rating among U.S. adults, and a 39 percent negative rating. Santorum has a 26 percent positive rating, and a 39 percent negative rating. They each perform much better with Republican primary voters.
And in terms of the impact on each party’s brand, the Democratic Party had a 45 percent positive rating among registered voters in March of 2008, and a 35 percent negative rating. Four years later, the Republican Party has a 32 percent positive rating, and a 43 percent negative rating.
But the GOP’s ratings represent a recovery of sorts from the party’s depths in mid-2010, when the August NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll from that year had the Republican Party with just a 24 percent positive rating, and a 46 percent negative rating.
Republicans are also still dealing with the fallout from an unpopular two-term president in George W. Bush, who preceded Obama. The wars Bush had started are still winding down, and Obama still warns of a return to the policies of the years that preceded him, attacking Bush by implication.
The Bush years also left Republicans with a more fractious coalition with emerging fault lines of social issues and foreign and economic policy. Given those divisions, it might be tougher for any of these candidates to capture a broader swath of the electorate.
Enthusiasm, curbed
The figures from both primaries suggest that Democrats were happier with their choice of candidates than Republicans have been this cycle.
Fifty-seven percent of Republicans who voted in the Mar. 6 Ohio primary said in exit polls that they would be satisfied with Romney as the eventual nominee.
By comparison, 73 percent of Democrats who voted in the Ohio primary four years ago said they would be satisfied if Clinton won the nomination, and 66 percent of Democrats said the same of Obama that same cycle.
Nationally, 45 percent of Republican primary voters said in the March NBC/WSJ poll that they would support Romney with enthusiasm, and 42 percent said they would support Santorum with enthusiasm.
Four years ago, in the same national poll, 60 percent of Democrats said they would vote for Clinton with enthusiasm, and 52 percent expressed enthusiastic support for Obama.
But in 2008, Democrats weren’t being measured against an incumbent president like Republicans are this cycle. The differences between the candidates were also more stylistic in 2008 than ideological, especially compared to the 2012 race in which Republicans do battle over the extent of their conservatism.
But the Democratic primary four years ago also featured two political heavyweights in Obama and Clinton, each of whom were poised to make history simply by virtue of their nomination. Obama would become the first African-American presidential nominee, and later, the nation’s first black president. Clinton would have been the first woman to top a ticket, and the first woman president if she were elected.
And Republicans can take solace in the fact that Obama is now their greatest unifier. While there might not be tremendous enthusiasm for either of the two major remaining Republican candidates, there’s a great deal of interest within the GOP about beating Obama.
A mid-February Gallup poll found that Republicans, by an 8-point margin, were more likely to say that they were enthusiastic about voting this fall compared to Democrats. And among certain key portions of Obama’s 2008 coalition, especially younger and nonwhite voters, enthusiasm was down.
But a mid-March poll, also by Gallup, found that enthusiasm for Romney and Santorum within the GOP is down from 2008; Republicans are motivated this time by voting against Obama.
And the numbers in the January NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll suggest that while Santorum and Romney might not generate tremendous enthusiasm, they’re at least acceptable. Seventy-five percent of Republican primary voters said they would be “comfortable” with Romney as the nominee, and 65 percent said the same for Santorum.

The one thing the democrats had in 2008 that the republicans dont have is enthusiasm. "Vote for me because I'm not the scary black man" just does not resonate with most voters. In 2008,Democrats were excited about Obama. They were full of positive energy. Republicans were full of fear and hatred. Thats all they could go on about. Obama won by a landslide. Now,Republicans are still about fear and hatred. Its still "vote for me becuase you should be afraid" It just does not work. They have no candidates that excite the electorate.
And Obama is at 41% approval rating according to New York Times. And here is some other numbers for Americans to excited about: 14,241,059 Americans on food stamps a 50.1% increase since Obama took office. 2,413,000 Americans unemployed for atleast 27 weeks since Stimulus passed under Obama in 2009. 103.5% increase in price of gas under Obama. (note liberal hyporcicy) Liberals have been posting comments on msn vines about gas price hike under Bush, and they claimed price hike due to Bush/Cheney allowing big oil buddies to soak Americans by inflating price. (here's the hypocrisy) Liberals now claim under Obama, suddenly the President has no control over gas prices. Unemployment numbers falsely inflated by liberal media, at 8% actual numbers(U6), 16% unemployed, if you count jobs no longer available to be counted, and people who have given up looking. And here is another fact that liberals convienently choose to ignore. If Obama policies were turning around economy and a mass people were finding employment, Obama would be projected to win in a landslide, and you liberals wouldn't have to be spouting lies about how great Obama is, WE WOULD ALL ALREADY KNOW IT.........just saying

we entered a recession the right refused to recognize until we started to look like a depression under BushCo, but debt increased under Bush (both of them) and decreased under Clinton. W didn't inherit an economic mess no matter how you slice it
Debt increased under Clinton I don't care how you liberals try to spin it. The housing bubble and the un-regulated derivatives market were the results of Clinton and the democrats after him that successfully resisted any effort at control. Gasoline prices under Bush averaged around $2.00-$2.50 per gallon except for early 2008.

The GOP candidates are saying it has to do with who is President (but if you want to go with that, I can always point out that $3.50 is less than $4). The speculators control gas prices and they manipulate them to their advantage like crazy.
My point was that Bush didn't inherit a mess, Obama sure as heck did and to hear the GOP talk about, the world pristinely began the day he took office and then suddenly he screwed the pooch with wars going on and the previously wonderful economy was driven into the ground. Not the way it happened.
Gasoline was 4 dollars under Bush for a relatively short time. If you would get your head out of your arse you would know that. It has been 3 dollars or more under Obama forever.
Obama's biggest problem is now he's not just an unknown who never did anything like 2008. The voters know him - all too well.

This GOP primary season has been extremely damaging to the GOP in general.
The GOP field is in shambles. They appear to be in a race to the bottom.
It seems,....the only reason why one candidate starts to gain traction is because the public dislikes the rhetoric of another.
The candidates are over-exposed, and we have seen repeated x-rays of them, showing their cold disconnected attitudes about the plight of the 99% and their "entitled" desire to dictate public attitudes on race, gender and sexual orientation.
The LAST THING this country needs is another 4 to 8 years of GW Bush style class warfare on the middle class.

Another hit piece posted by MSNBC. This article is full of half truths and innuendo. Calling Obama and Hillary "political heavyweights" is a complete joke. Neither had any executive experience, and voting for someone just because they're black or a woman is as racist or sexist as not doing so. One major factor the author has left out is Obama's record. He has been the worst President in U.S. history. Millions more are out of work due to his policies, the Middle East is rapidly turned to radical Islam, Iran is on the verge of acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel is on the verge of attacking Iran, goods cost more, gas costs more, and Obama has spent more than the first forty-two presidents combined. He has been a failure and once the GOP select a candidate, Obama, as he should be, is history. One thing about this article is true, it is a different type of primary, but this time, unlike the Hillary-Obama primary, the GOP has candidates that are actually qualified.

It's not "hatred" of Romney, it's that many republicans would rather have a more conservative candidate. There also is no potential "hypocrisy," as those promoting republican views in the media have consistently said that if Romney is the GOP candidate, they will back him 100%. The larger issue is that if Obama were to be re-elected, this country may not recover from his disastrous policies; Obama has been a failure and he is destroying America; any of the GOP candidates will be supported by the conservative media.

Obama had everything passed that he wanted during the first two years of his presidency; he had Pelosi, Reid, and super-majorities in both houses of Congress. We are currently suffering under the legislation they passed, and the spectre of Obamacare is threatening the future of our country. The economy didn't start picking up at all until the GOP took control of the House and slowed down Obama's insane spending spree; in November, when Obama is removed from office, things will begin to get better. Obama has been a complete failure, and America can't afford him any longer.

And 2,413,000 Americans have been unemployed for atleast 27 weeks since Obama passed Stimulus in 2009. And though Obama claimed he would turn the economy around by the end of his first 4 years, he hasn't. Recently the CBO released "NEW numbers" that Healthcare Reform is not deficit neutral. And as far as those of us who wish to keep our employer provider health insurance, in reality the CBO says now 20 million workers will lose that employer provided insurance, and will then be forced to provide their own through a Government exchange. And Healthcare Reform will actually add 3 1/2 trillion dollars to the deficit according to a recent budget submitted to the CBO by the Obama administration(you know the non-partisan CBO who claimed when HRC was first FORCED down Americans throats it would not add to the deficit?). But even now with those facts and all the recent "revelations" about how millions of stimulus dollars were wasted, and instead of creating jobs, instead went into Unions and failed "green energy companies", ITS NOT OBAMAS FAULT? Wasted stimulus, Solyndra(and the list keeps growing), and now its being admitted Healthcare Reform will ADD to the deficit, "fast and furious", all these things Obama did and is still doing, and you liberals are still spewing mantra its Republicans fault? These pet programs above are Democrat policies, not Republican, and when these policies fail you on the left keep pointing to the RIGHT. Man I wish that I had the ability in my own life to blame all my F-ups on someone else, never having to take responsibility. It take courage to admit ones mistakes, and courge to change direction. The old saying goes, "the definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over, and expect a different outcome", and you on the left must be insane. I do not believe that Obama is a "secret" Muslim, don't care if he doesn't have a REAL birth certificate. What I do KNOW is Obama studied and believes in Sal Alinskys book, "Rules for Radicals", and believes that in "redistribution" of wealth through taxes. The problem with that is WHAT the "redistribution" is spent on.

If the Republicans can win the Senate and control the House it will not matter who is President. Congress controls the purse strings. While President Obama's veto pen will be on high alert, the actions and legislation created by Congress should reflect what, "We The People" are asking for in pro-growth policies and job prosperity policies. You are either with us or against us and if it is the latter your resignation will not only be sought, but expected. What some repubs and Conservitives mean when they say "Take back our country", they are talking about taking the country back to it's Constitution and take it back from the progressive liberals that have taken us away from the Constitution and have enacted failed policies that have taken us to the brink of

Given where Romney stands within his own party it does not look good. Then we have the fact that McCain throughly beat Romney only to be destroyed by Obama in the general election. If Romney can't beat McCain it follows it will be even tougher for him to beat Obama.
I think a lot of this too goes to the issues the GOP keep bringing into the campaign in a desperate attempt to get an edge. Birth control debacle is one example. What a horrible mess the GOP has made out of what started as an angle to burn Obama. Now Santorums 'war on porn'. Previously the GOP was obsessed with Obama's birth certificate. When the GOP talks of health care they talk of going back and doing away with Obamacare.... what i missing is how the GOP plans to provide guaranteed healthcare coverage to more Americans than Obama's plan. Just hating Obama is not enough. The GOP needs to explain how the poor, middle class AND wealthy are going to be better off under their leadership. Not just that they will make sure the wealthy are well taken care of and that (hopefully) prosperity and affordable healthcare will 'trickle down' to the rest of us.
