Gingrich shows off his Southern roots

Republican presidential candidate Newt Gingrich speaks during a campaign rally Saturday at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan, Ala.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich played up his Southern roots Saturday as he campaigned across Alabama.

“Unlike one of my competitors, I have had grits before,” Gingrich said, making a jab at Mitt Romney never trying grits until this week. “That may explain as much as anything why everybody in Alabama and Mississippi ought to vote for me.”

The former House speaker during breakfast continued telling the crowd at John Word's Restaurant Cafe in Mobile, “I figure if you don’t understand grits there’s a pretty high likelihood that you don’t understand the rest of the South either.”

Gingrich held five events across Alabama with just three days to go until voters head to the polls Tuesday. A Georgia native, he continues to argue that neither Romney nor Rick Santorum is the true “Southern candidate.”

A prominent fisherman from the South even threw his support behind Gingrich today.

Ray Scott, the founder of Bassmaster, gave his endorsement of the speaker at an event at the Wiregrass Museum of Art in Dothan. Gingrich, wearing a green BASS shirt rather than a suit for the first time in months, even tailored his gas-prices pitch.

“If you’re a fisherman and you take your boat anywhere and you try to fill up your boat and you try to fill up your truck to be able to take your boat somewhere, you have a real interest in the price of gasoline,” Gingrich said.

He even made a common joke down in the South: The crowd was so impressive in Dothan, “there must be nobody left at Walmart this afternoon.”

Over the past week, the speaker has risen in both Alabama and Mississippi polls as the race between the three candidates in those states has narrowed. But Gingrich isn’t taking any chances.

“We have momentum but we haven't won. We still have to go out and finish the sale,” Gingrich said outside Mama Lou’s in Robertsdale. “We have to make sure, particularly in a county like this that has such a huge Republican vote, we need to make sure that everybody understands the opportunity.”

Gingrich jumps over to Mississippi on Sunday for two public events.

Ohhh, please tell me that you're not that much of a hack….please

Firstly, had you just found the numerals 1969 on the top of your keyboard it would have been much quicker for you than typing "+bunch of numbers" (Maybe the Cheetos crumbs got in the way and covered the buttons, sorry)……so I have no choice but to deduce you are "special" or you thought you were "slammin' me"….either way, you're an idiot.

    Secondly,

what does that even mean, Michael+bunch of numbers? Please explain

Are you for real??? Is this the first election you've paid attention to as an adult??

It's called baby-kissing baby! E-V-E-R-Y single politician does it, including your "God" Obama.

Hillary did it in '08 with her "southern twang"…lol…..'member that @!$%#???…lol….what a hoot!

I know you remember the days that Slick Willy a.k.a. Billy "Blue Dress" Clinton actually thought he was the first "black president" (and all the folks on the looney left agreed with him) and he'd go'a preachin' down in the deep south…lol…'member that too???? Ohhh man, those were the days.

See what I mean? Every politician does it. On the left and the right

Isn't it mildly embarrassing that I have to explain elementary poli-sci to you?? Scratch that, liberals have no shame.

We are all doing okay Fiesty, thank you for asking, I have just been really busy with my work for the international office of my union in addition to my regular gigs. I check in and throw my two cents in every once in awhile on FR, you can't always work non-stop, got to have a little leisure time. I think I will take Mrs. Grump out later tonight to try her luck at a local Casino, she enjoys gambling. Ha probably why she took a chance on me!

McCain has no one to blame but himself. He picked unknown, unprepared, unwilling to listen Palin. He deserves no pity from anyone; He chose this no-good, quitter as his running mate. To think that this lady could have been in charge of our lives...brrrrr....I don't even want to think about it.

HBO put up some liberal fiction on Palin, so libs could reinforce their delusions. Feisty enjoyed it: proof it was a hit piece.

Even though the book was largely pro-Obama, HBO was still too chicken to film anything remotely negative about their hero, focusing on bashing Palin instead.

So, Feisty, bringing Palin's children into the discussion, are we? Claiming she "uses" her children? As classless as ever.

Too cheap to subscribe to HBO eh, Bob!

I do so ♥ when you speak of things you know nothing about! lol (which is 99.9% of the time)

PS: Both Nicole Wallace & Steve Schmidt (McCains two top level staffers) have publicly stated the movie was extremely accurate.

I'm not getting the sympathy for McCain, either. He had been running for President for 8 years, had his primaries sewn up fairly early (compared to the Democrats) and yet the decision to pick Palin was made in a hurry without proper vetting. What does that say about his leadership skills?

"PS: Both Nicole Wallace & Steve Schmidt (McCains two top level staffers) have publicly stated the movie was extremely accurate."

Both are portrayed as heroes in the book and movie, because they were the sources who leaked damaging information to make themselves look good.

John McCain has blasted the movie as fiction, as have many of those involved with Palin. The producers and actors of this liberal fantasy donated 200k to Democrats and 0 to Republicans...the same HBO crew who made the biased "Recount" which also made Dems heroes and Republicans evil..

At the time they filmed this, they didnt know if Palin was running, so they thought they had a chance to smear her.

If they knew Romney was to be the GOP nominee, they would have filmed an HBO historical miniseries on Mormons in the 19th century, starring George Clooney with a bevy of hot women as his many wives....
