First Thoughts: 227,000 jobs created last month

227,000 jobs created in February, unemployment rate remains unchanged at 8.3%... Santorum’s goal next week: to knock out Gingrich… Breaking down Romney’s cash-flow situation (and the problems he could have later this spring/summer)… But Romney will have cavalry that could ride to his help… Keep an eye on the Republicans standing on the sidelines in the GOP race… Rock chalk, Jayhawk: Kansas caucuses take place on Saturday… And Santorum to appear on “Meet.”

*** 227,000 jobs created last month: Another month, another positive jobs report. The breaking news from the AP: “U.S. employers added 227,000 jobs in January to complete three of the best months of hiring since the recession began. The unemployment rate was unchanged, largely because more people streamed into the work force… And hiring in January and December was better than first thought. The government revised those figures to show 61,000 an additional jobs. The economy has now generated an average of 245,000 jobs in the past three months. The only stretch better was since the recession began was in early 2010, when temporary Census jobs lifted payrolls.” The current trajectory for the economy and the labor market is pretty unmistakable. Then again, we still have eight more jobs reports until the November presidential election. President Obama speaks on the economy in Prince George, VA at 12:30 pm ET, while the RNC holds a conference call to pre-but it.

Republican presidential candidate Sen. Rick Santorum speaks during the Alabama Policy Institute 2012 Presidential Candidate Forum, Thursday, March 8, 2012, in Mobile, Alabama.

Like us on Facebook for the latest from our politics team

*** Santorum’s goal: to knock out Gingrich: As the GOP primary campaign has moved to the South -- to Alabama and Mississippi -- Rick Santorum has excellent chance to win both contests this Tuesday, as well as Saturday’s caucuses in Kansas (more on that Kansas race below). But as msnbc.com’s Mike O’Brien pointed out yesterday, Santorum has a more immediate goal with these contests: push Newt Gingrich out of the race. So campaigning in Alabama yesterday, per NBC’s Jay Rankin, Santorum made a pitch for a two-man race: “If you go out and deliver a conservative victory for us on Tuesday, this race will become a two-person race. And when it becomes a two-person race for the Republican nomination, the conservative will win that nomination.” And the pro-Santorum Super PAC, Red White and Blue Fund, released a new TV ad (in Alabama and Mississippi) that hits BOTH Mitt Romney and Gingrich.

*** Romney’s cash-flow situation: Yesterday, the Romney campaign revealed it raised $11.5 million in February and had $7.3 million in the bank as of Feb. 29. But when you consider that the campaign spent nearly $1.3 million on TV ads from March 1-6, per the ad-tracking firm Smart Media, it really has $6 million in the bank -- or even less when you consider payroll and travel expenses. Of course, that doesn’t count whatever the campaign has raised in March, but it does raise a cash-flow question for Team Romney: It has money (and more than its GOP rivals), yet is it enough to withstand another two more months of this primary race? And more importantly, will it be enough to withstand a potential offensive from the Obama camp and Democrats whenever Romney wraps up the primary? Remember, a presidential candidate CAN’T use general-election funds until after his party’s convention. So for the folks who have already maxed out to Romney with primary funds -- representing about two-thirds of his money to date -- the $2,500 they might be able to donate for the general couldn’t be spent until late August.

Terry McAuliffe of Greentech Automotive and The Last Word's Lawrence share their thoughts on the latest jobs report. O'Donnell predicts that President Barack Obama will get re-elected if they unemployment rate drops to 8 percent.

*** Send the cavalry! Buy if Romney essentially wraps up the nomination later this spring, there would be plenty of cavalry that could ride to his help -- the Republican National Committee (which last night reported having $26.5 million in the bank), the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads groups, the Koch Brothers-backed Americans for Prosperity, and the pro-Romney Super PAC (which has spent a whopping $28 million on ads so far). And, of course, you’d imagine that Romney would be able to raise A LOT more money from Republican donors once he becomes the presumptive nominee. But at the moment he does, Team Obama would start with a clear money advantage. The question is: How quickly would Team Romney (and its allies) be able to reach parity?

*** Republicans standing on the sidelines: Here’s another question we have: When will we see more prominent figures of the GOP establishment -- like Jeb Bush, Lindsey Graham, Paul Ryan, Haley Barbour, and Mitch Daniels -- step up and endorse the former Massachusetts governor? In the past few days, we’ve seen more and more members of the establishment (Eric Cantor over the weekend, and Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant last night) back Romney. But the others have stayed on the sidelines for now. It will be interesting to see if/when they get on the field.

*** Rock chalk, Jayhawk: By the way, we have another contest this weekend: Saturday’s Kansas caucuses. According to NBC’s John Bailey, caucusing begins in the Sunflower State at 11:00 am ET (10:00 am local) and wraps up at 2:00 pm ET (1:00 pm local). Ballots will be counted at each caucus sit, and then results will be called in to party headquarters. The Kansas GOP expects the first results to come in around 2:30 pm ET and hopes to have all results in between 5:00 pm ET and 6:00 pm ET. Bailey adds that 40 delegates are at stake: 12 are congressional-district delegates awarded on a winner-take-all basis within each district; 25 are at-large delegates awarded proportionally based on the statewide vote (but a candidate must get at least 20% support to qualify); and all three national committee delegates go to the statewide winner. In 2008, Mike Huckabee won the caucuses with 60% of the vote, besting runner-up John McCain by 36 points. Mitt Romney had already left the race at that point and got negligible support. Also on Saturday, we'll find out the preference of seven more Wyoming delegates.

*** On the trail: Romney campaigns in Jackson, MS then heads to Birmingham, AL…Gingrich makes three stops in Mississippi (Meridian, Ellisville, and Gulfport) then hosts a rally in Mobile, AL… Santorum campaigns in Alabama and then heads to Kansas, where he holds two events… And Paul -- back on the trail -- also campaigns in Kansas.

*** On “Meet the Press” this Sunday: NBC’s David Gregory interviews Santorum, as well as Govs. Martin O’Malley (D) and Bob McDonnell (R).

How dare the economy continue to improve?

Women's rights, reproductive health, contraception & abortion are more than big news. We are not talking subtle abuse of power over women's bodies:
Women understand that given the chance, Governor Ultra McDonnell (R-VA) would enforce 'transvaginal ultrasounds" on them AND without their doctors' permission.

Such extreme GOP agendas are so retrograde for women, that New York Republican lawmaker Teresa Sayward (R) says she does not support any of the GOP Presidential candidates.
Ms. Sayward says if she had to vote today:
"I'd vote for Obama. Absolutely...Because I really, truly think that the candidates that are out there today for the Republican side would take women back decades."
"It's disheartening for me to see our party move away from what it was always about and that is to stay out of people's lives, let them live their lives, don't impose their religion on anybody else. Don't impose their feelings, let them live, and uphold the Constitution."

**The Futuristic Nightmare for American Families**
GOP's demonstrated narrow, narrow vision on behalf of the affluent and transnationals:
Cutting women's health, reproductive & family planning rights; getting rid of safety nets; cutting state budgets on the backs of women, new mothers, Headstart, low-income, the middle class and seniors and shifting those monies to corporations; getting rid of the minimum wage, worker protections, child labor laws; getting rid of voting rights; Anti-education at all levels (e.g. cutting teachers: GOP Governors already cut 700.000 public sector jobs -- over 200,000 teachers), anti-R&D investments, anti-job-creation (voting against the American Jobs Act, GOP governors refusing highspeed rail monies and FEMA), anti-worker rights, anti-health reform, anti-financial reform, anti-taxes for the wealthy, anti-infrastructure for the 21st century = anti-'nation building' at home.

Looks like new job growth in February is leveling off after decent reports in December and January. The unemployment rate stayed stuck at an historically high 8.3%. It looks like the slow-bama recovery is still stuck in first gear. That’s not an unexpected or surprising result. If America is going to become more like the Old-Europe socialist countries, the price the country is going to have to pay is going to be slower economic growth and higher unemployment rates.

From CNBC.com:

Jobless Rate Flat at 8.3% Even as Payrolls Grow 227,000

The slow melt-up in employment continued during February as the economy added 227,000 new jobs while the unemployment rate held flat at 8.3 percent.

With warm weather helping to spur activity and as the European sovereign debt crisis receded into the background, the American economic engine continued its slow but steady drive toward recovery.

Economists had expected 210,000 net new jobs and the unemployment rate to hold steady at 8.3 percent.

Private payrolls in February grew by 233,000. Manufacturing added 31,000 jobs and services 203,000. Government subtracted 6,000 jobs from the total.

Job creation fell well short of the January totals, when the economy saw an upwardly revised 284,000 new jobs and a drop in the jobless rate.

Despite the upward trend in job creation, there remained strong doubts about whether the drop in the unemployment rate could continue.

Cause a stir?

This is treading water, honey. Only until we have sustained month after month growth of 300k plus job per month there's nothing to be tooting any horns about.

Not to mention manufacturing jobs are not increasing at all. What we have is an increase in the old hamburger flipping jobs.

Anybody, remember when Kerry ran against Bush and the media was blasting Bush for only creating low paying jobs back when his unemployment rate was at 5.3%?

Of course you do. Where is that criticism from the press today?

Kirsten Powers has written another tough piece calling out the professional left for their hypocrisy regarding their repeated use of language insulting to women. As predicted, she has become the target of ferocious attacks from the left for daring to expose that they systematically practice the very same misogyny they so sanctimoniously denounce in others. Fortunately, Ms Powers is not intimidated by these slugs and has the courage to share the truth with anyone who has the integrity to hear the truth.

Dear Sheldon Adelson,

With regard to your recent pledge of 100 MILLION DOLLARS to assist the Republican Party in winning back the White House and ending the cratering effects of Obama's governance on the US citizenry and the national economy, I would like to make a suggestion on how you could help most.

There are SIX different campaign commercials from 2008 in which Obama appears on screen railing then President Bush, John McCain, and Repulicans for high gas prices. Please acquire these commercials and create a loop TV ad and play them is swing states NONSTOP or whatever your 100 MIL will get you.

The media certainly won't report or point out how much of a hipocritical double speaker this failure in the White House is but you can!

Today, the President shot himself in the foot. He personally called over a dozen democrats and asked them to vote against the keystone pipeline. The pipeline that has the approval of about 70% of Americans. Now I and maybe most Americans understand that the pipeline may not lead to lower prices in the short term but it does show Americans that the President's "all of the above" strategy is nothing but more LIES.

Americans don't appreciate LYING Presidents. Remember Bill Clinton? He was a very successful President. But boy oh boy did his approval ratings go down the drain when he was proven to be a LIAR.

It's time for this LIAR to go and fade away into the ash heap of failed Presidents.

Thank you for all due consideration to my suggestion.

Feisty, top o' the morning!

"Employers ...took on more than 200,000 workers in February for a third straight month, indicating an improving labor market will support the U.S. expansion, economists said before a report today.

Payrolls increased by 210,000 after rising 243,000 in January, according to the median projection of 94 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News.

Such a gain would cap the strongest six-month hiring stretch since 2006." (Kowalski.)

Steve H - of course Obama wants to reset unemploymnet standards.... that's the only way he can make his dismal record look even marginal! Lowering standards across the board is the goal of creeping socialism.

I heard on the news today that Obama's grant of $10 million to a 'green' company has resulted in a low output light bulb that costs $50 a piece! That too the administration will call a success! lmao!

Backhouse, well said. In red states like ID, TX, AL, GA women and men are protesting the GOP attacks on women's health care and reproductive rights.

It is so typical of the right to rally around their hate mongers like Rush by claiming the other side does it, too. Rush Limbaugh repeatedly denigrates women, he attacked two more this week just because he didn't like what they said. There is no excuse for either side to be disrespectful or use hate speech but trying to blame liberals in defense of their own loud-mouthed "femi-Nazi" screamer is the perfect example of deflection which conservatives do so well. How about conservatives tell their own to stop it, too, instead of pointing at the other side and yelling "foul". Rush Limbaugh spends 3 hours a day preaching hate and no one on the GOP side has the courage to tell him to shut the heck up. He began the incivility in public discourse so do not try to blame the other side for what he and FOX have been doing for over a decade.

Great job Backhouse! I love how the jobs numbers are chugging upwards, it makes for another day of 'hair on fire' for the right.

It must be tough, to be a republican these days, with all the positive turns in the polls, market continuing to climb upwards, the jobs numbers increase and positive outlook from investors. These are all things the Republicans use to welcome, but along the way as they have followed the Pied Piper of Hate, Limbaugh, they lost their moral compass.

Now they are reduced to bullying women and peddling hate. Where's the future in that?

Backhouse - Gov. McDonnell won't just try to force every women who goes to her private doctor to terminate a pregnancy to undergo invasive actions upon her body. He will do it. It does not matter how early in the pregnancy you are, you must now have an ultrasound at the tune of almost $400. If that can not determine the gestational age of the fetus (and experts say it can't), you must be verbally asked if you would like to also have an invasive transvaginal probe ultrasound, which you would also have to pay for. What they are refusing to answer - is if you decline the request, are you refused an abortion? He refuses to allow the women and men of Virginia to vote whether they want this new legislation. This is the man who wants to be the VP of all women? As was pointed out - even Republican women are starting to speak out against this type of aggressive legislation against women. They don't call him Vaginal Probe McDonnell for nothin'.

Yes, of course, Bill Fairfax: the " he did it first" excuse ALWAYS justifies misogynistic behavior. At least in the mind of a 10 year old.

See, Bill, that excuse didn't work for my cherubs when they were little and tattling on each other. It sure doesn't work NOW, when we are talking about disturbing and disturbed behavior from a shock jock that is the titular head of the Republican Party.

The questions are simple: is calling a woman a "slut" right or wrong? Is going on a three day rant about it, 3 hours a day, right or wrong? Is the refusal to come out from behind a microphone owned by Limbaugh, and be questioned by his betters right or wrong? Is scrubbing those segments from Limbaugh's website, attempting to hide his behavior, right or wrong?

There is ONLY one answer to these questions, and by making excuses for it, Bill, you condone the behavior.

The continuing good news in the jobs market is driving the Repugs crazy. Their entire "game plan" for the 2012 election was the continuation of the Economy that President Bush created. They would now sell it as President Obama's failure. Everyone would blame and hate the Democrats and they would just walk right back into the White House. Just keep saying NO to everything the President proposes and it'll be a slam dunk. Ahh, life will be good again and we'll be rid of that Uppity Black Man who is just not "One Of Us".

Well, guess what? It didn't work. Their whole plan has fallen apart. The economy is not only getting better but improving every month. So what do they have to pursue today? What is the Repugs platform for 2012 now? SEX. Yes, let's do away with contraceptives and abortions. Let's breed more Repugs. Yes, that's the answer for our new Platform.

These guys are insane. I love it.

Really, Iran is the country just for him, and I mean the Revolutionary Guard part. Gingrich has just as much reason to get Santorum out, if not more. People who listen to Santorum are bonkers and/or would love it if we brought back witch hunts and the Spanish Inquisition (nobody would expect it, right?) Santorum could actually be the worst thing for the Republican party during this election. He can't win the Presidency, but he can make Republicans lose.

I don't see Gingrich getting out of the race as long as he can add to his delegate count. He knows he can't win. He's too far behind and without Edelson he would already be roadkill.

So maybe it's time to ask, "What does Newt want?"

At first I thought it was all about selling books and getting speaker's fees. Raise his personal standard and sell more books. Get on all the news shows and look forward to getting more paid speaking gigs after he finally drops out. Maybe he's looking for a permanent paid gig on FOX.

Newt obviously doesn't care that he's damaging the GOP brand. It's all about Newt and nobody else.

But what the heck does he want?

This is a serious question folks and not one to be answered with talking points or witty (or witless) quips. This is the question the GOP establishment has got to asking itself right now. What the HELL is going on here? What does he want?

Does he want to be Vice President? It can be a do nothing, ceremonial job. Maybe that's what he is angling for. I think he's burned too many bridges for that.

Does he want to be "Kingmaker"? I don't think he's going to have enough delegates for that. Does he think if they go to a brokered convention his delegates could put Santorum or Romney over the top and give him leverage? But for what? Ambassador to France? Secretary of State? What?

Barring a shocker at the convention Romney is the guy and the President's re-election is in the bag.

But what does Newt want out of all this? Enquiring minds want to know.

Hey Bill in Fairfax -- I'll consider reading your link when you answer my post from Wednesday.

Bill in Fairfax -- You said:

P.S. From my post #1.58 on Monday:

"Liberal poster: But please tell me you don't think Rush's calling Ms. Fluke a slut was funny.

Me: OK, I didn't think it was funny. In fact, I was surprised Rush went that far to make his point"

Do you think Rush's comment on wanting Ms. Fluke to send in a video of her having sex is funny? How about the comment concerning his view Ms. Fluke is a "prostitute", is that funny to you? In your post on Friday you appeared to be saying you found that part of Rush's rant funny. Are those statements made by Rush funny or not Bill?

Seeing as you did not answer this question Monday I thought I would ask one last time.

Bill,Fairfax - I do not like the repeated use of language insulting to women that is used by both sides and certainly on this forum - it's sophomoric, where ever it occurs.

But this goes beyond Rush Limbaugh. He is merely the one who created such a bellicose episode that women who formally were not politically involved -have now become aware of the attitude and legislation that has and will continue to reduce women to second class citizens. Latest ones - McDonnell in Virgina requiring a (vaginal probe) invasive procedure on women seeking to terminate a pregnancy and GA deciding that women who have state benefits can not have abortions covered even if it is a result of rape or incest.

And the attacks on women's rights go on... Beyond contraceptives and abortions -

Maryland schoolboard cut funding for Head Start because women should be married and stay home with their kids so the program would not be necessary - Republican Commissioners

House Rep.Chris Smith proposed legislation that would redefine rape to "forcible rape", so women must prove they fought their assailant or it's not rape

2010 Senate Republicans voted unanimously against the Paycheck Fairness Act.

Republicans voted down party line against reauthorization of Violence Against Women Act

WI Republican Senator Glenn Grothman proposed bill that labels single parenthood as child abuse

GA bill to redefine victims of rape, stalking and domestic violence as "accusers" instead of victims of abuse

It's not about these loons displaying school boy humor and language - that is merely symbolic of a deeper issue and that is the war on women's rights that is being waged against the women of this country by an element in the Republican Party. Not the whole Republican Party - but the whole Republican Party is allowing it to occur and not standing up for women.

At the beginning of the 20th century, our maternal mortality rate was approximately 65 times higher than the current rate. And in the 17th and 18th centuries, one in eight U.S women died from childbirth and the average woman had five to eight children."

Here's how it works AP. Although, I doubt you will believe it:

From the Rush Limbaugh Program:

Yesterday I explained to you how it is that we have not lost whatever the number is today, 45 or 43 advertisers. Today there's a more blatant example of what journalism has become, and it's in the Washington Post. It's a story written by a woman named Alexandra Petri. I don't know how it's pronounced. Alexandra Petri. And let me read you the headline of this news story. I don't know if it's in the newspaper or just on their website, but here's the headline: "Rush Limbaugh’s Show Targets Jerks, Judging From the Latest Ads -- Advertisers learned something about Rush Limbaugh’s demographic this week. 'Here we thought lots of pleasant, upstanding people were listening to and enjoying the rational things Rush had to say,' dozens of companies said. 'Apparently not.' It turns out that people who really, truly still enjoy Rush Limbaugh’s show are -- how do I put this? -- jerks."

This is the Washington Post characterizing you. "At least that’s what the new advertisements moving into the vast empty lot of Rush Limbaugh, Inc., implies. ... So far, he’s picked up AshleyMadison.com, the site where you go to cheat on your wife, and another website that is explicitly for sugar-daddy matchmaking." There's only one problem. We are not running spots or commercials from AshleyMadison.com. In fact, when we find that they are running in our program in local markets we call the local affiliate and tell them, "Don't run these ads in our show." We do not sponsor companies that help people cheat on their spouses. And right here it is in the Washington Post, claiming that we are.

Now, the people that run Ashley Madison are out saying they're willing to advertise on our program. There are stories and advertising blogs about this, but we have not accepted it. Right here in the Washington Post. Ms. Petri, I don't know who feeds you your information -- I have a pretty good guess -- but you might want to double-check here because you've written something that's patently false, it's an out-and-out lie complete with your b-i-itchy opinion in it, and it is untrue. We are not running commercials. We wouldn't accept commercials. We have rejected their offers from outfits that do this kind of thing, provide a way for you to cheat on your spouse. We have never knowingly had this company in our program.

And again, there are two ways you can get on this program. You can come and be an official EIB sponsor, or you can buy commercial time on one of our local affiliates and become one of 18,000-plus advertisers that we will never know about, except with things like this. When we find out, we do our best to clear this inventory. So I wanted to set this straight. It is an out-and-out lie, just like every other report about lost advertisers and everything else that you're seeing. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have new sponsors coming on in the next week two weeks, three of them at least. As I said yesterday current advertisers that canceled, had a couple meetings with them, they're asking to come back in. There's literally nothing factual being reported about this.

Skippy The Okie--

Really enjoyed your sad story the other day about how your your poor, misguided brother is a conservative and has been duped into NOT being an Obama groupie by the evil, brainwashing Fox News. Whatever OBVIOUS issues of inferiority/superiority you have left over from childhood that caused you to be a mindless liberal should best be taken care of with your therapist(don't pretend you don't have one). But that being said, does your brother know that you've gone on record on this site as saying that ANYONE who dares criticize Obama should be jailed for a hate crime? Does he? Do you still believe that? Do you include your brother in that group (people who should be imprisoned for criticizing the Prez...)

Do you even realize what that means when you say something like that? No wonder you lefties were such big fans/supporters of the Soviet Union back during the Cold War.

Skip - Newt is greedy and wants money, pure and simple, nothing more - nothing less, just good old fashioned money. Now, I love a good conspiracy theory - so I suggest that Romney's SuperPacs are funding Newt to keep delegates from flowing to Santorum. Crazy, you might say, but not completely out of this world. Had Newt been out of the picture on Super Tuesday, Santorum would likely have out performed Mitts in several primaries.

House Rep.Chris Smith proposed legislation that would redefine rape to "forcible rape", so women must prove they fought their assailant or it's not rape

Anyone who knows anything about rape knows that in the greater majority of cases when a woman fights back the violence on the part of the male attacker escalates.

What is truly disturbing is that all these laws--whether related to rape or abortion or women's health--are promoted by men who are totally unable and/or unwilling to attempt to see the issues from a woman's perspective. They lack empathy. They don't care about other points of view. It's all about them. Their power and control status is threatened, and they're digging in their heels.

By contrast, President Obama gets it. How refreshing and uplifting it is to have a man like that in the White House.

No, that's not "out of this world", RedDev. It's par for the course in the GOP's world.

Remember Rod Shealy?:

While running a campaign to elect his sister Sherry Martschink to Lieutenant Governor in 1990, Shealy, with the help of Robert Kohn, recruited unemployed black fisherman Benjamin Hunt, Jr. to run for Congress against Republican Arthur Ravenel, Jr. Shealy sought to increase the turnout of white voters by playing to the racial fears of the South Carolina electorate. He promised Hunt, who had a prior drug arrest, $900 to run for Congress and paid for his $2414 filing fee. Shealy paid for the fees with an unreported $5000 campaign contribution to his sister from Laidlaw Environmental Services.

He gave the entire democratic party a huge solid gold political gift, and it will be a gift that keeps on giving, he knows it, republicans know it, and that is his greatest punishment, the fact that he is the driving force that encourage millions of women and the men who respect them to vote democratic in the November election. I'd like to know what 20 sponsors have completely pulled their advertising from Rush's show. Considering he's the highest rated radio show mid-day, it would be completely foolish for any advertiser to pull their advertising. Do you liberals actually think business works this way? Rush is supposed to be controversial so he's doing his job.

We know the liberals were all crying and whining because of Rush's statement... boo hoo... let's attack his sponsors... What the Fu*k else is new with the liberals? They've been trying to get Rush off the air for years... but keep on failing... I guess they really suck at their methods and are especially poor at accomplishment. White Collar: Limbaugh does not control the media buys the way you think he does...that's why he's going to these lengths to convince you (as though that were hard) that he only controls advertisers when it's convenient for him to insist he does. For the advertisers that bought time on Clear Channel and didn't bother tracking that time appeared on the Limbaugh show...he's always taken credit for them as "Limbaugh" sponsors. When they pull their advertising now that they know where their dollars were spent, he now says well, they never really counted anyway....He knows folks like you actually believe he has the kind of power to call any station and the entire parent company at whim and tell them what to run or not run regardless of their ad contracts. No wonder you buy his 'contraceptives are for sluts' stuff...geez you're easy.

What millions of women are mobilizing against the republican party Forrest? If you consider millions of liberal women mobilizing, no foul, no harm. They were against the republicans anyway. Simply stated, that's the status quo. I know plenty of conservative women that weren't against what Rush said because they felt the "slut" Fluke, deserved what she got. Ideologies don't change much because of a single statement Forrest. Even a rant from a conservative doesn't change the conservative mindset.

The only gift Rush gave you was the indignation of people that already hate him. It played big to those that listen to liberal media anyway... so in all actuality, it was pretty much contained within your own ideology. It didn't do any damage to the conservative opinion, or those leaning to the right.

When measured in levels, what Rush said only deepened the hatred level of those on the left. Big deal! What's one more level deeper applied to people that already hate him anyway?

As to "Tea-Tard" and "Retard", it just fits. Folks who are falling for the crap Republicans have laid out must have some kind of "thing" wrong with them. What kind of person listens to a politician tell them point blank "Hey, if I get in office I'm going to rob you blind. First I'm going to lower your wages, then I'm going to steal your retirement money that you've been saving all your working life, and then I absolutely guarantee you that I'm going to MAKE SURE you CANNOT get ANY affordable health care" and Republicans actually vote for that person?

Max Baucus and Jon Tester of Montana, Kent Conrad of North Dakota, Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, Claire McCaskill of Missouri and Jim Webb of Virginia

These senators and five other democratic senators concerned about the effect of high gas prices on the American consumer and the economy. These senator understand what an "all of the above" approach really is.

Barack Obama is FOR higher gas prices. The other day in a press conference he back pedaled from his previous statements in which he stated that he WANTS gas prices to go higher because he is "heading into an election". This is one of his few honest moments. He only cares about re-election.

Gas prices are already hitting $6.00 a gallon is parts Florida and California and $5.00 across many other states.

OBAMA OWNS THESE HIGH GAS PRICES.

Production is up on private lands out of Obama's control Federal land production is way down. Off shore exploration is halted by Obama. How many democrat legislatures and democrat governors have proposed raising taxes on gasoline in the past year when prices weren't so high. Can you imagine if they were successful in their attempts?

OBAMA OWNS THESE HIG GAS PRICES!

American Girl said: AND use such inflamatory (and false) phrases as President Obama is some kind of "failure" when the right knows that's a blatant lie.

I happen to agree with you in one sense. Obama is anything but a failure at setting his agenda in place. He has been highly successful at it. He came on board saying he plans to fundamentally change the United States and that he has done, handily.

The problem lies in his successes. What has he fundamentally changed and is it actually good for America?

The ACA - The hallmark legislation of the Obama administration. What does the ACA do? It provides for more control of people. It opens the door for further government intervention in everyone's lives, like it or not. It gives the government control over the most important aspect of individual freedom, our health. Tell me American Girl, is this a lie? Do you actually trust others to make decisions over the things you need to live a life full of freedom?

We don't know fully what is contained in the 2000 pages of this healthcare bill. We haven't a clue what provisions they have placed in there. In Nancy Pelosi's own words... pass the bill so we know what is in it. Even Congress didn't know everything they put in that legislation before they approved it. I'm sorry, but I don't trust others making decisions over my life that I should control myself. Is this a "false" premise? If so, tell me why.

Derek and Sarah - I love both your posts! Gave me a chuckle today.

On a serious note - no side has a monopoly on bigotry - it seems to be equal opportunity all the way - politically, religiously, gender, payscale - you name, I've seen bigotry displayed in all of it's ugly glory.

Forrest - You hit the nail on the head. I know you don't agree with me brian.:) But I do think the Republican establishment and the RNC is worried. I've said before, we are starting to see people like McCain, George Will,Rove,Jeb,O'Reilly,Lowry,Craig Smith express concern about what is happening in the Republican Party. Young women and independents are watching how the Republican Party handles this assault on women, particularly the legislation proposed. It may not hurt Rush in the long run,but I think it will hurt the Republican Party in Nov.

No Brian it is not just liberals who were prediposed, John Boehner even tried to meekly address it, and if the Speaker of the House is publically trying to mildly denounce Rush's statement that is proof positive that republicans are taking plenty of heat from their own. Rush is still talking about it as well, he has lost in the neighborhood of 43 sponsors, which will not put him under by any stretch, but it is a big problem for republicans, you may not think so, but it is. Take a look at the way Obama's approval numbers have shot up in the last two weeks with women voters of every demographic, especially southern white women. Rush is now Obama's Secret Santa! Women all over the country are now engaged and enraged, they are railing against republican state legislators and governors on a whole range of womens health issues. Rush lit a fuse and the bomb is going off in republicans faces.

Wow. Reading everyone's comments here this morning and this is what I get. WCA and BB think all liberals are liars and Rush walks on water. Not to mention I do believe they feel all women should be barefoot and pregnant, and women's opinions do not matter. Hey guys! Looked at any polls lately? Your team is not looking very good to independent women and Latinos. Guess you don't really need votes from that sector, right? After all, they may be sluts who need to put their sex videos on line because they might have taken birth control pills - even if the reason they took the pill was for some other reason than contraception, but hey, let's not let facts get in the way - after all I am just another liar, right? (Yet, I am one of those independent women, funny how that works.)

To my friends on the left - Bill Mahar was WRONG for his comments. Admit it. Language against women you disagee with should not be the words he used. Kind of the pot/kettle thing. And just because you don't agree with the right, don't lower yourself to name calling. It hurts your credibility.

What I continue to not be able to understand is the ever present dicotomy of the Republican mindset. On the one hand Republicans repeatedly tell us that the government has no right to be involved in the personal, private business between a doctor and a patient. At the same time, they are saying that the government should be able to tell a woman and her doctor what legal medicines she is allowed to take and what legal procedures she can have and what extra charges the doctor has to do in order for the doctor to conduct those procedures.

I just don't understand, does the GOP want goverment out of our lives or does the GOP just want government to be getting into a woman's vagina ?

Forrest said: Rush is still talking about it as well, he has lost in the neighborhood of 43 sponsors

What sponsors Forrest? Those on the left keep saying he's lost sponsors but they haven't named one sponsor he's allegedly lost. Rush didn't have 43 sponsors nationally. If you are talking local affiliates... so what! If you know anything about radio, it's a weekly occurrence to have 43 sponsors on a national basis shift their advertising around. Businesses come and they go on radio... Rush has over 600 national affiliates and if 43 local sponsors shifted off his show, that happens already ... so this is nothing.

but it is a big problem for republicans, you may not think so, but it is

Everything from the slant of the left is a big problem for republicans. If they sneeze wrong, it's a big problem. If they glance in the wrong direction, it's a big problem. Really Forrest, I couldn't care less. It's nothing new, nor is it something the left doesn't harp on, on a daily basis. Personally I believe it's wishful thinking on the part of the left.

Here again, wishful thinking from the left. Do you know how long this will last? It will last only until the price of gasoline rises nationwide above $4.10 a gallon... then off to the next item... defending Obama for doing nothing to help lower the price. How about the price of food... It will go up even more over the next few months... transportation costs are rising. Then electricity will rise due to the oil prices.... it's not looking good for Obama, no matter what Rush says.

When it comes to people's wallets, they will be looking to blame someone... and that someone usually is the president.

    WCA ...

I'll never understand why the Left thinks it's OK to use, day after day, such an inflammatory phrase as "Tea-Tard" and "Retard".

Simple, if you can't present reasonable observations then dazzle us with BS. Regardless, the FR left does provide for good comedic relief.

    --------------------

I get a charge out of them trying to paint the right as being women haters, get rid of obama and wanting to destroy America just to get rid of obama.

Interesting on how we have so many intelligent and bright conservative women in our society and how we welcome more of the same in both the private and public sectors.

Defeat obama by wanting and creating bad economic growth?

Flies in the face of their accusations that the right, wealthy and businesses are all greedy. We want growth. This morning the WH chief economic adviser reported on our good jobs report numbers but that obama has now started laying blame on the size of the economic hole we had. Hmmmm, didn't seem to be that important for obama in his first 3 years, but now it is? Oh wait, obama wants to be re-elected.

Destroy America? Couldn't be further from the truth. Can any of them illustrate to us that larger government has given any countries populace a better life? Can they even show us that the european governments needed large government entities to provide their populace with social benefits?

The poor FR lefties are unable to look down the road to see that we are not on a path of fiscal sustainability with all of our spending habits. That is fine for them, just slap another bandaid on, don't bother to fix the wound or change the previous bandaid. Carry on with business as usual. Cheney may have said "deficits don't matter" but the left sure wants to embrace it.

I have no problem with tax reform, but fix the spending first.

Myth: Please, let's just stop with it: That your favorite political party wasn't completely complicit in the financial disaster.

Really, if you can't beging to comprehend that, you are totally on drugs for your favorite political party. And to paint a picture that one party was more responsible than another, is to continue to make complete lies and fiction about what happened.

You know what politicians weren't involved? The ones who got no lobby money from the banks. Oh, I'm sorry, that means none that matter or that you know of.

Duh. These were multinational banks. Did you think they were so stupid as to only send money to one party and not the other? Oh, wait, I forgot, the onus is totally on the borrower and not the lender, right? Please, please never pretend to know anything about banks ever, then. Because if you decided that it isn't your job to know who you are lending money to and know if they can pay you back, then you are Full of Flying Bulls**t.

I'm not absolving the borrower. I'm just saying please stop with the children's book version of the story. Time to grow up and realize that all your favorite politicians of the time had at some role in what happened. And then they realized they'd need to be finding new jobs. Except for those of us dumb enough to keep on electing the same Democrats and Republicans, because we live in fantasy land about who was at fault.

brian - I do agree that there are a number of issues that can trip up Obama - the economy - a war - both of those will do it. So far, we're looking good, but who knows.... Gas prices will always do it in the summer and I expect when they go up, the heat for Obama will go up too. But the prices tend to go down after summer,so we'll see where that ends up.

But young women(and their parents and the men that support them) - this whole issue of anti-women legislation will stick for them - and I think that will hurt the GOP. As a matter of fact -I think once Romney can tie this primary up, you're going to start seeing a big push to curry favor with women voters. But they can't change the legislation they've already proposed.

The whole issue of anti-women legislation is a smoke screen Katheryn. It was the counter to Obama denying the Catholic Church their religious freedom by having government dictate to them what they can and cannot do religiously. The left wing media morphed it into anti-women propaganda in order to protect Obama. Ask yourself the question, how did this all start? Actually this was prefaced in the debates. The one with George Stephanopolis as the moderator. He asked Santorum if the government should pay for birth control... This was about a month and a half before the whole eruption of this issue came about. It's funny how the subject matter was deflected into a woman's rights issue... when the question of birth control isn't even a topic of what women's rights really are. Not one single person on the right ever denied that women can't use or obtain birth control.

The left is using the issue and the right isn't countering it. Why? Because it's a nontraversy. What legislation has been proposed to deny women's rights? As intelligent as you are, I'll bet even you can't answer that question. This should lead to the fact that it's a lie emanating from the left.

                #1.125 - Fri Mar 9, 2012 12:56 PM EST

It's about attitudes and legislation that has been both proposed and enacted by the Republican Party both federal and state. Taken as a whole, it is not friendly toward women.

Rep.Wayne Christian said,"Well,of course, it's war on birth control and abortions and everything. That's what family planning is suppose to be about."

Joe Pitts of Pennsylvania - proposed new GOP bill to allow hospitals to refuse to provide an abortion even when the procedure is necessary to save women's lives.

GA bill - to redefine victims of rape, stalking, and domestic violence as "accusers" instead of victims of abuse

Wendy Rogers - Women should not have an abortion even to prevent the unfortunate death of the mother.

Thomas White - Baptist Theological Seminary - declared use of birth control pills is murder of a life

Mitt Romney - "I hope to reclassify the most commonly used forms of contraceptives as abortions."

House Rep. Chris Smith proposes legislation that would redefine rape to "forcible rape" must be proven

Maryland schoolboard -cut funding for HeadStart because, as two republican commissioners said -women should be married and home with their kids so the program would be unnecessary.

Santorum has said states have the right to outlaw contraceptives.

2010 -Republicans voted unanimously against the Paycheck Fairness Act (which would ensure women equal pay)

For the first time since it was enacted, the vote was down party lines - Republicans voted against reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act.

WI Republican Senator Glenn Grothman proposes bill that labels single parenthood as child abuse

The trend is scary for women. They feel very threatened - perception is reality. And the above doesn't help.

Just checked out some polls, from the most conservative leaning that have Obama beating any republican candidate by 7 points to some of the left leaning that have him beating them by 27 points. On average he is ahead of republicans by double digits, so it is not just wish full thinking on my part, republicans are not in good shape that's a numerical fact.

Newt knows that he is not numerically eliminated yet. However, he needs to yield to Santorum sooner rather than later. Word is that Santorum would consider him to be VP. That would be an awesome slot for Newt. But the, with Newt, that could be more trouble that it's worth.

vwterry - those that have abandoned Rush are experiencing a loss in revenue in sales, and a decrease in value on the stock market.

BTW - those that pulled - were owned by liberals. Yeah that's right, they were making a killing by advertising during Limbaugh's hours.

Thanks Ron, Ginger, and all the rest who read my post. I appreciate your feedback.

I hadn't considered the conspiratorial possibility that Mitt is bankrolling Newt to keep him sucking away Santorum's votes. I guess that could have happened about the time Newt eased up on Mitt a bit and started talking trash about Santorum. The ads we saw here in Oklahoma from Newt seemed to be aimed pretty much at Santorum exclusively, so maybe you're on to something.

But Newt didn't get into the race just to be a spoiler. Newt is about Newt and $$$. BIG $$$. All that nonsense about colonies and mining operations on the moon and $2.50 gas is malarkey but the MSM is too dumb to see the joke.

No, Newt wants something. Maybe he's cut a deal with Mitt to get it? I don't know what it is. Somebody who knows Newt and his history, motivations, etc. needs to give this some serious thought. I'm beginning to think he just wants to sell books, get speaking gigs and a FOX show.

vwterry said: from ABC News- Here is the list of confirmed companies who have officially pulled their advertisements from the Rush Limbaugh radio show.

Do you know how many do that on a weekly basis? This is spin from ABC news. How many liberals actually know how radio advertising works? I dare say not many of you. Out of 600+ affiliates there are hundreds of advertisers that pull or change their line up on a weekly basis. Just because this list of advertisers pulled their advertising, it means absolutely nothing. This does not effect anything. In the middle of November, on any given year, 50 pull and 50 add. It's a rolling figure every week.

The liberals are thinking, by hearing this, they have done damage to Rush's show. Little do they realize that for every advertiser that is pulled, one is added. There's usually a waiting list for ad slots during Rush's show... so all they did was replace those that pulled ads with those that want ads. Next week those that pulled ads will put them back.

I used to work in radio... this is exactly a normal amount of business and means nothing. But you liberals keep on thinking that businesses that pull ads one week, don't replace them with new ads the next week. Most of the time, on local affiliates, the advertisers don't get to name their spots. They rotate on a number basis during certain business hours of the day.

For those that think that national advertisers are hurting Rush's show... be deluded. There is no shortage of businesses wanting to buy time during 12PM and 3PM eastern, every work day of the week. You have no understanding of how the system works and what advertisers gain from their airtime.

I would just like to take a moment to call out "SteveH USA" and the comment about drinking kool-aid. This is in reference to the tragedy in Guyana when the evangelical pentacostal Jim Jones conned/forced his followers to commit mass suicide. Most of the dead were children, Steve. More than 200 children were murdered by drinking poisoned kool-aid, Steve.

First of all - the "kool-aid" drinkers were evangelical christians, Steve - you know, the brainwashed minions that make up your beloved "tea" party (remember Michelle Bachman???). Second of all, why on earth would you make light of hundreds of dead children to put down those you disagree with? Are you that disgusting, or are you parroting a phrase without knowing what you are talking about?

Either way, you should be very ashamed of yourself.

Brian: oh I get it...the vaginal probe, ultrasound, don't listen to your doctor order, and that attempt to make sure contraceptives can't be covered by your insurance thing are all a cleverly disguised PRO-woman gambit!! OH!!...and here I thought women were capable of making decisions on their own without government intrusion mandated by the party of less government intrusion?? I had no idea you want the Federal government ordering probes of vaginas because you're here to HELP. Well, good thing you're around to explain that all this is really just PRO woman, and has just been, um...'misinterprelated'. Gee, I sure hope you can get this thing straightened out in time to do something about that HUGE gender gap Republicans are facing....good luck with that, guy.

Prove it. With the likes of the sponsors mentioned on these boards, this is the course of doing normal business with radio advertisers. Just because ABC new's says it, doesn't make it so... after all, they didn't even vet Obama in 2008.

Sarah - just wait until that becomes a national thing when ACA takes over... All this blaming the right stuff will come to a swift and sudden end when the democrat health care plan takes over and you are going to have to endure much more invasive procedures in order to keep your health care. Try to blame the right when that happens... impossible... it will come courtesy of your friendly democrat party.

AP - is the vaginal probe a mandate from the federal government or the state government? You do realize the difference don't you? States have different and varying rules of engagement... unlike the feds, that want to control everything. If you think for one moment that I support any intrusive political medical procedure, you are sadly mistaken. Unfortunately I will have no choice in a couple of years... neither will you... when ACA takes over the entire system and becomes self-aware in 2014.

"american" - You can not change the fact that Jim Jones was an evangelical pentacostal. Using the incident for a political opinion is not only disgusting, it is also inappropriate to use it in a lame argument against "liberals". I did not write that all evangelicals promote what happened in Guyana...I wrote that Jim Jones was an evangelical. I can understand how you would get confused.....

It will be interesting to see how many of them try to get back on, like Sleep Train did. Of course, it seems that they were turned down by Limbaugh. Apparently they realized too late that a knee jerk reaction is not a good way to run a business, especially when you pull your ads from a show that is sending you a lot of business.

Sarah/A lot of males mentally and/or physically control their females. It has been so throughout history and even before.I personally know of two and have been associated with a few more in my younger ,single daysIt has taken many woman a long and painful journey to advance from that stage and even now I would guess that the majority still conscede to their oppinion that my partner knows best, even when it is obvious to all, including themselves that that is incorrect. D.B .I would be doubtful if a true liberal would have much,if anything to do with someone from the far right wing politically. Just because a person claims to be liberal only means that they perceive that of themselves ,and as for the comments that we liberals are always making false claim/ from someone else. I leave that to the party of the right, they are better at it as they have much more practce at it.

"And that's the way it is..." this week.

Newt Gingrich called President Obama a "weirdo" on energy--this from the guy who pledged to colonize the moon! Newt alone provides enough hot air to fuel President Obama's wind energy program to power a couple dozen homes.

Not to be left out on energy weirdness, Mitt Romney said President Obama is trying to "stifle oil production". Shades of Archie Bunker--ignoring, of course, that under the Obama administration oil production has quadrupled and the US now exports more oil than it imports. "Stifle", really?

Montana Federal Judge Richard Cebull forwarded a disgusting, racist e-mail about President Obama and his mother. Cebull issued the usual "if I offended anyone" non-apology but the outcry continued so he sent a letter of apology to President Obama. The question isn't whether or not he should apologize but rather is he fit to serve as a federal judge; can he fairly judge all people or is he predisposed to bias? Bill O'Reilly said Cebull "can't walk this back", and he's right. Justice must be blind.

Maryland's Governor O'Malley signed same-sex marriage into law. The usual right-wing groups plan to fight to overturn it--they just love taking away rights from those who aren't like them!

Gingrich's Georgia robo-call said Santorum "cozied up to union bosses and voted for the AFL-CIO". Oh, the shame of supporting American workers.

Edna Milton Chadwell, madam of Texas's "Best Little Whorehouse" died at 84. Ever wonder how the place survived in a state so full of self-righteous evangelicals unless....well, there was the study that said the states accessing the most pornography were very red, very religious states not to mention David Vitter.

Rush Limbaugh called himself a "credible critic" while tripling down on his vile comments regarding public citizen Sandra Fluke. Monday he apologized on air but only for two words he used in his 3-day assault, the rest of his rant he thought was fine, a "credible critic" and blamed democrats for the words that came from his mouth! That drip, drip, drip is the sound of Rush's tears--libel and slander does that even to a wind bag.

Speaker Boehner said Limbaugh's comments were "inappropriate"; Santorum muttered "absurd" over and over and "entertainer"; Romney tried to hide, then accepted Limbaugh's apology and blamed President Obama (huh?). The real John McCain emerged with strong words for Rush including "totally unacceptable". Ron Paul hit the nail on the head with "he's not very apologetic; it's his bottom line he's concerned about." Cheers to McCain and Paul. Jeers to the cowardly lions.

George Will, a genuine conservative, gets a Gold Star for honesty regarding GOP lawmakers and candidates, "inappropriate is using a salad fork for your entree....they're willing to bomb Iran but are afraid of Rush Limbaugh!"

Sara Palin thinks Florida's GOP Rep Allen West is VP material. Okie, dokie--you betcha!

Ann Coulter appeared at George Washington University to debate Lawrence O'Donnell for the KIND charity. Even republican supporters decided she was odd; one tweeted he should have been sitting on the other side (democrats). Ann thinks the voting age should be 26; and women should not be able to vote--that way, republicans can win! Beyond that, Coulter gets credit for being a good sport and debating O'Donnell for charity--even if she is a "quarter bubble off level".

Ohio Governor John Kasich turned down FEMA aid for tornado-ravaged areas in southern Ohio which means homeowners won't be able to take advantage of low-interest federal loans to help them recover. We are the United States for a reason--we come to the aid of each other when disaster strikes including with shared tax money. Sometimes conservatives are so stuck on stupid, they allow their rigid ideology to overrule common sense--Mr. Kasich, that's you.

The Koch Brothers are suing the Cato Institute in a fight for control of the libertarian think tank. What with all the colleges the Kochs are buying and now think tanks--won't be long before Santorum's claim about indoctrination is complete, conservative style, which should make little Ricky happy.

The war monger "real" John McCain appeared this week, too, when he called for "US-led air strikes against government forces in Syria". He really does not get the difference between Syria and Libya. Let's just say, thank goodness, McCain lost in 2008 because we would now have boots on the ground in Libya, Syria, Iran and who knows where else--military lives, the deficit and debt be damned.

Meanwhile back in the saner world, the Saudis, Qataris are pushing the Arab League to arm the Syrian rebels; Turkey is considering its options. The World's Powers will resume talks with Iran which has agreed to allow IAEA inspectors to visit a site suspected of secret atomic development. Both make more sense.

As he has often done, President Obama gave us two more The American President moments this week. He made a call of "conscience" to Sandra Fluke because her character and reputation were being viciously attacked by a right-wing media hate monger and blow hard because she testified on Capital Hill. The second came when he reminded the GOP presidential candidates, and journalists who fail to challenge them, that "I am Commander in Chief....if some of these folks think that it's time to launch a war, they should say so, and they should explain to the American people exactly why they would do that and what the consequences would be." Got that Mitt, Newt, Rick--et tu McCain?

Super Tuesday came and went with mixed results but overall Romney won. Nothing was locked up and the GOP talking heads, strategists and analysts are hyperventilating over whether or not Romney's narrow win in Ohio is good, bad or irrelevant. Michael Moore quipped "what's it say about Romney if he can't beat the guy who forgot to file his papers?"

During his "I won Massachusetts" speech, Mitt Romney used a teleprompter. Where is the GOP outrage--a teleprompter? The horror of it. Oh, wait, he uses a teleprompter for nearly all his speeches.

Newt Gingrich gave is "I won Georgia" speech. He droned on forever because he didn't use a teleprompter to keep him focused. He really should because he spoke about how as President he will make the US energy independent with drill, drill and drill more for $2.50 gas and he'll tell China and India to fight for their own oil--oh, by the way, if the Iranians block the Strait of Hormuz, "we'll obliterate them" in another War for Oil which Newt said we won't need because he'll make us "energy independent". Got that?!!!

Rick Santorum gave his "I didn't win Ohio yet but I'm here anyway" speech with the usual President Obama "apologizes" to the world nonsense along with a lot of other outright lies. Just once would someone ask these guys to provide the exact quote of this "apology" in its entirety, not a snipet, because guess what, it doesn't exist.

In describing Mitt Romney's inability to seal the GOP deal, Martin Bashir provided the Best Quote of the week, Romney "could very well be the Prince Charles of the GOP". That understated British humor hit the sweet spot.

The real winner in Ohio was President Obama who received 547,588 "symbolic" votes, over 91,000 more than Romney. Ohio voters did not need to show up for Obama but over half a million did anyway.

In Florida, Bain Capital's Outback Steakhouse franchise is lobbying the State legislature to lower the minimum wage from $4.65 to $2.13 per hour. Perhaps the Bain Capital and Outback shysters should try living on $17.04 for an 8-hour work day while they whine about the 48% of American workers who do not pay federal income taxes--because they don't earn enough to live on. Rich folks looking to slash the minimum wage because fictional Gordon Gekko told them "greed is good".

Vice President Joe Biden weighed in on the GOP primary while in Tampa Bay, "God love them, as my mother would say, I hope they have another 20 debates."

Andrew Breitbart's last "scoop" turned out to be a giant, stink bomb of a dud. It was hyped as a "media conspiracy to hide a never before seen video" of a young, Barack Obama speaking at a Harvard rally in support of law professor Derrick Bell. On Hannity, Breitbart's spokesman said that if the media wanted to find this video, they could have. Ha! These guys are dumber than dirt. PBS ran the video in 2008 as part of a documentary on Candidate Obama--apparently Breitbart and friends missed it. Even dumber was the idea expressed by Breitbart's numnuts that it was "radical" in 1991 to protest for more diversity in the Harvard professorial staff! There's a point where pushing the same radical, racist button over and over results in malfunction.

Thursday, Rick Santorum went on a "radical" religious and war threatening rant ending with "he (President Obama) thinks he's Emperor instead of President"--and Rick apparently thinks he's the "second coming".

This week's Bachmann "Chitspa" Award goes to Mitt Romney for President Obama is the "most feckless president since Carter." This coming from a presidential wannabee who ran from the press and is afraid to criticize radio-hate talker Rush Limbaugh--that's a foot wide yellow streak running down Willard's back. Talk is cheap, Mitt, it's character that counts and yours is AWOL.

Food for Thought: It is safer to have the whole people respectfully enlightened than a few in a high science and many in ignorance. Wonder if Rick Santorum thinks Thomas Jefferson was a "snob"?

I've never heard this quote before, but it is amazingly relevant to the issues of the day, with Republicans attacking the concept of quality public schooling for all. I still can't believe Santorum "homeschooled" his kids and his district had to pay over $70,000 to an online school for him to do it.

As a former bowler, there was always the crazy one that would repeatedly hit the reset button until it would break. You perfectly described the GOP/TP in this election cycle.

                                  Dear Jody, brilliant absolutely brilliant!

There are two things that we learn from this past week or so:

                                  1. Mitt Romney is a moral coward, twice given the opportunity to speak out against Rush Limbaugh, he weaseled his way out. Ladies remember that come November, not is he not on your side, no Republican is either,

                                  2. Barack Obama is not a radical, much as the right keep trying to paint him as such, among other things. His voice sounds exactly the same today as in 1991, and his thoughts are very much the same on matters of fairness that go to his core. Ladies, remember that come November and vote for President and your best interest, he is on your side.

                                  Obama/Biden 2012

Another great wrap up, Jody. You have your work cut out to pick the Chitspa award each week from so many worthy candidates.

Funny thing about the tape of then-student Obama at Harvard. He showed more courage then in speaking out against an injustice than Mitt Romney did today as a candidate for President in his failure to call out Rush Limbaugh. In fact Romney said "I would have used different words" which implies to me that he approves of the message of Limbaugh's words.

American President is one of my favorite movies!

Hmm. For some reason the story I want to post keeps disappearing. The gremlins are at work again. Here's the essence of it:

State Sen. Nina Turner, a Cleveland Democrat, this week introduced Senate Bill 307, which is aimed at protecting men from the risks of PDE-5 inhibitors -- drugs like Viagra that are commonly used to treat symptoms of erectile dysfunction -- in an effort to “guide men to make the right decision for their bodies.”

Does she want women to compete with Somalia? Does she want women to undo 100 years of fighting to get the vote? What status does she think children would have with that scenario?

He was entertaining in a "follow the yellow brick road" sort of way, and also was a constant reminder of how naive and ridiculous peaceniks are. The big question now is; since he is no longer in a prominent position of power, will his hot-ass wife leave him?

If Mitt Romney truly believes that such an accomplished President in a time of a deficit run up by 2 unpaid-for wars and unpaid-for tax breaks for the rich: A President who has recussitated the US economy from a Great Recession against all odds, in spite of a GOP congressional membership that openly pledged to obstruct him every step of the way - is the "most feckless president since Carter."

Then I believe Romney is the the most 'feck... no-nothing presidential candidate since the Charter.'

Jack, Portsmouth, thanks for adding that. There are several states where women lawmakers are taking similar action.

Damage, "saner world" refers to allowing the Arab League and the nations in the middle east to fight their own battles; to stand up for their own people. Libya was a unique situation, it had an organized rebel opposition which controlled large parts of the country. There is no equivalent to that in Syria. Syria has a strong air military and has air defense systems in place. There is no way the US should do as McCain wants and start carpet-bombing on the off chance we hit Assad forces. The situation in Syria requires global, multi-lateral action with the help of the Arab League--Russia and China are currently blocking any efforts by the UN. A US go it alone attack on Syrian forces would inflame the Iranian situation even more.

Unreported here (as far as I know): Far-left liberal icon, Dennis Kucinich is no longer in congress.

                                  Jody-

You forgot to mention Joe "The Plumber" Wurzelbacher running for congress. You remember him, right? He was the ordinary citizen who, back in 2008, asked candidate Obama a question when Saint Barack was touring his neighborhood. He flustered The Chosen One and inadvertantly caused Hussein to accidentally reveal his desire for wealth redistribution in America. Within HOURS, the liberal media and liberal citizens on blogas and message boards like this one, set out to destroy him. How DARE he stand in the way of The Chosen One???!!! They dug into his personal life, his past etc...All for being a regular citizen daring to question Obama.

The point is, do you people feel even a little bit HYPOCRITICAL for flailing around this past week in fake outrage over the Limbaugh/Fluke issue, especially when you all are screaming that she is NOT a public figure and doesn't deserve to be attacked?

Should I dig back into the 2008 archives of this site and see what you hypocrites were saying about Joe The Plumber and the leftwing media's campaign to destroy him? I KNOW what I'll find. More hypocrisy from you people, that's what.

Jody -- Wonderful wrap up as usual. The policies some republicans are pursuing, i.e. lower wage standards, is an attempt to control the masses. If anyone would like a visual of that type of control, I recommend watching In Time, with Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried. It's a sci-fi type movie, but a broad parallel is presented concerning living wages and control. Not a great movie but something worth renting.

Thanks Jody for wrapping it up so well!

Hey, Jody - great work as always. Here's one from yesterday you may have missed - after Rush calling Sandra Fluke a slut and Andrew Breitbart attempting to smear Harvard student Barack Obama from the afterlife, Chris Christie yesterday continued the GOP celebration of "Let's Attack Law Students Month" by getting into a shouting match with a second-year law student at Rutgers' Camden campus at a town hall discussion over the upcoming merger Christie favors between the Rutgers campus and Rowan University. Both parties got out of hand, but as the guy was escorted out by police, Christie just couldn't quit while he was ahead and yelled at him "And let me tell you something. After you graduate from law school, you conduct yourself like that in court, your rear end's going to end up thrown in jail, idiot."

The good news is that once he had a chance to cool down, Christie defended his actions with this unique version of an apology:

"Damn man, I'm the governor, just shut up for a second."

The better news is that at least he wasn't picking on a young female student. No, this guy was a former Navy Seal, Iraq veteran, and works as a legislative representative for the New Jersey Veterans of Foreign War - so it's not like he actually deserved any respect, right?

Christie 2016 - 'Cause you thought THESE debates have been fun!

Damage: This is no victory for the wing nuts. Kucinich still may run for one of two open seats, having been "redistricted" out of his by the Republican controlled legislature. Hate to break it to you, but not only may Kucinich run again, he was beaten in the primary by a fellow progressive.

In fact Romney said "I would have used different words" which implies to me that he approves of the message of Limbaugh's words.

Mittens is as big a liar and slanderer as Limbaugh, but he prefers to use more genteel language suitable to his high station in society.

No time for the full "what else happend last week", but. . .

The deficit was announced as the worst in, well, ever. Looks like Obama is going to need to try to raise the debt ceiling-again- before the election, and

The trade deficit is worse than it was in 2008, and

We taxpayers just made an at least $400 million investment- in Peugeot.

                                  http://www.ihs.com/products/global-insight/industry-economic-report.aspx?id=1065932380

Nobody who knows anything at all about the car market can understand this. GM lost $700 million in Europe last year, and this company's hallmark is lousy cara that run sporadically, at best.

So, what's the deal? No one knows- but I guess this is what you get when politicians and union leaders are making the investment decisions.

                                  Jody,

I liked your statement about John McCain "showing his true colors." I am not comfortable with the blistering disrespect Mr. McCain recieves on this board, I do not think he deserves it. The Syrian proposal he made this week was not for all-out war, but select support for rebels, much like we did in Libya but from some of the reaction here it was like he proposed a full invasion.

I recognize Mr. McCain would not have made a good president, especially after choosing Ms. Palin. I sat '08 out.

I know it is difficult for many far-right and ultra-left posters here to comprehend, but it is possible to disagree yet respect. Thanks, Jody.

Jody: genrally well written. You seem to be tilting more to the left in your commentary than usual. I usually see your Friday wrap up as a (mostly) unbiased and unopinionated review of "the week that was." Perhaps it is the outrageous opinions and women hating coming from the far right bringing out the reaction.

Personally, I do hope Santorum wins the GOP nomination. I would love to see Pope Ricky's super-ultra-right conservative teavangelical right wing women haters go up against the "communist, socialist, facist, nazi, 1/2 black, Kenyan, non-US Citizen" known as President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama. I would love to see the Tea Party and its ideals crushed for the last time. Maybe then the GOP would return to being the "Grand Old Party" it once was.

Mark in So Cal. I always read your posts even when I disagree. I have a lot of respect for Senator McCain; one of my favorite moments in the 2008 campaign was when he told that lady that President Obama was not a terrorist. That was classic McCain and the McCain this democrat respects. I try hard to find good things to say about conservatives in this weekly wrap but these days it is a challenge because so few show much courage or intellect.

I understand what McCain was talking about in Syria but the dynamics of Syria are very different from Libya. What troubles me with McCain is that too often he lets his disappointment in losing in 2008 cloud his talk in the Senate; he does not like President Obama and every chance he gets, he does what he can to make a fuss when there should be none. The region is complex, one size does not fit all which I think he misses perhaps because the days of clearly defined enemies and wars are a thing of the past. I just do not think we should go it alone which is what McCain always seems to advocate--just go do it. That's what he wanted in Libya plus he was ready to put boots on the ground because it wasn't happening fast enough to suit him.

                                  Mark in SoCal,

I recognize Mr. McCain would not have made a good president, especially after choosing Ms. Palin. I sat '08 out.

I know it is difficult for many far-right and ultra-left posters here to comprehend, but it is possible to disagree yet respect.

Yes, we can show respect, but unlike yourself many of the "conservative" (and that is giving them way to much credit) posters on FR they don't give it so they reap what they sow.

Mark, I'm sorry to hear that you sat on the sidelines because of McCain's choice for VP, voting is important especially on the state and local level. Strange but thoughtful I must say from my liberal view point. Palin now there is the poster girl for what's wrong with the GOP.

                                  devie,

I sat out the presidential in '08, but most definitely participated in the state and local.

I am more disappointed with Sara Palin than anything else. She blew multiple opportunities (on so many levels) to be a great woman. What a waste. And yes, very poster-child in many aspects for what is ailing the GOP these days.

                                  Jody,

I will agree it is time for Mr. McCain to retire from the political arena.

                                  Have fine weekend!

Jody: Great post. By the way, the word is "chutzpah".

And, off point, but a loss for the "jerk" mob this week. 50 advertisers havve now pulled ads from Limbaugh's show after his personal attack on the young GW student who dared to speak out for contraceptives.

"Think Progress has kept daily tabs on Limbaugh's fleeing advertisers and those sticking with him. AOL—the parent company of The Huffington Post—announced last week that the company pulled its ads from Limbaugh's show. According to Reports about Limbaugh's Thursday program showed that 77 of the 86 spots that aired were "free public service announcements donated by the Ad Council." Additionally, seven ads were from companies "in the process of pulling their spots." This apparently left only two paid advertisements.

with Republicans attacking the concept of quality public schooling for all. I still can't believe Santorum "homeschooled" his kids and his district had to pay over $70,000 to an online school for him to do it.

                                  Can you spell I-R-O-N-Y??

                                  Quotes from Santorum:

The government has convinced parents that at some point it's no longer their responsibility. And in fact, they force them, in many respects, to turn their children over to the public education system and wrest control from them and block them out of participation of that. That has to change or education will not improve in this country.

Where did Satan start? According to Santorum, "The place where he was, in my mind, the most successful and first -- first successful was in academia. He understood pride of smart people. He attacked them at their weakest. They were in fact smarter than everybody else and could come up with something new and different -- pursue new truths, deny the existence of truth, play with it because they’re smart. And so academia a long time ago fell."

Santorum was interviewed by the apparently still-alive Glenn Beck, to whom he explained that "Obama wants to send every kid to college, because of their indoctrination mills," which process would-be Christian soldiers into godless heathens."

Get rid of all of the federal money that goes to primary and secondary education . Not just get the federal government out but let's get the state government out...

Now, what makes this particularly ironic is that Santorum was willing to steal from the state of Pa to educate his own kids (from Wkipedia):

Critics also complained that Pennsylvania taxpayers were paying 80% of the tuition for five of Santorum's children to attend an online "cyber school"–a benefit available only to Pennsylvania residents. After the Penn Hills school district challenged the Santorum's residency and billed Santorum $73,000, he withdrew the children from the cyber school, and suggested they were being used as political pawns by his opponents.

So, I guess it is OK that his kids be schooled at state expense and, in fact, it is OK if he bends the rules and steals state money to educate his kids, but everyone else's kids should be ignorant!

Yeah, I want this idiot as president!

                                  Jody,

There may be some nostalgia for a long-ago McCain.

And John McCain may have apologized to someone about the 'terrorist' thing. Why not?

Meanwhile, McCain and Palin sent hundreds of thousands of robocalls in 2008 claiming that their opponent (who at the time was McCain's colleague in the Senate).....was a 'terr.....t'.

Unforgiveable. And still today, I find it so disgraceful in the extreme - that I have no use for anything McCain says.

I know it's spellled chutzpah. the Bachmann "Chitspa" Award is mocking Michele Bachmann's telling people President Obama had a lot of "chitspa"; that's the way she pronouned it while campaigning. It's a double poking fun on my part when I give the "Chitspa" Award.

Actually Tommy, anybody getting a job is good news. I'm not republican but I am conservative. The interesting part of this is, even though the job increases, in numbers, appears better, it didn't change the unemployment rate. There are still 23 million people out of work in this country.

Now as far as your assertion of hate - Where is it? Why would there be hate over good news? Maybe it's you liberals that expect it because you dish so much of it out. Surprise... no hate!

The latest polling info in Maine shows Obama's approval ratings have gone up as voters have gotten a look at the Republican opposition. Obama would beat Romney by more than he beat McCain in 2008. Mainers want to replace the legislature with a Democratic majority, and 52% disapprove of Tea Party Gov. LePage. (Olympia had a 69% approval rating.) Independent Angus King has a 60% approval rating (likely to be our next senator) and most Mainers want him to caucus with the Democrats. This is ALL GOOD NEWS today!

The numbers on the economy are getting better and I am glad - any sign of improvement is welcome. And I realize it takes more to stop a downward spiral,so the numbers show a hard fought turnaround. But on a "real" basis, I'm still not seeing it much. So I'm waiting and hoping it continues.

Yes, we do have a lot of republicans voter suppression to deal with.

I can't see women voting to become second class citizens which voting for any republican will bring. Then they want to kill social security and medicare so they can make the bush tax cuts permanent for the rich 1%.

Republicans want to kill education and especially higher education. Something about education that makes people no longer believe the far right faux propaganda.

Republicans as stated by Ann Couter, you young men should not be able to vote until you are 26. You can die at the age of 18 for your country, but republicans don't think you should not have the right to vote for another 8 years. Only a republican would ask someone to die for their country while they are denied the right to vote.

Also republicans like Ann don't think women should even be allowed the vote. The republican taliban is moving in the direction of Iran and then the republicans want you to beleive that is freedom.

Then they want to kill social security and medicare so they can make the bush tax cuts permanent for the rich 1%. This is an outright lie. It's nothing but liberal propaganda without any basis of fact.

Republicans want to kill education and especially higher education. Something about education that makes people no longer believe the far right faux propaganda. Another lie. What conservatives feel is the Federal Department of Education does, is absolutely nothing to enhance education. It is headed by a second class moron who knows nothing about education, or education standards. Eliminate the federal education department. Education is a local entity and shouldn't have anything to do with the federal government.

Republicans as stated by Ann Couter, you young men should not be able to vote until you are 26. Only a republican would ask someone to die for their country while they are denied the right to vote. Complete misunderstanding of Ann Couter's meaning. Of course leave it to a liberal to twist the meaning. People that vote should have understanding of who they are voting for. The youth don't... They are more interested in social issues surrounding their personal lives. I noticed you didn't mention drinking age... and the military is all volunteer anyway. They don't have to volunteer until they are 26... so that counters your point. No one is forcing anyone to die for their country at 18... pure obfuscation.

Also republicans like Ann don't think women should even be allowed the vote. The republican taliban is moving in the direction of Iran and then the republicans want you to beleive that is freedom. Again a lie. Complete skewing of what Ann's meaning was.

Leave it to a liberal pea brain to try to change meanings, make up their own meanings for what conservatives say. Trying to win points with your liberal buds AF? Maybe you should enter the circus.

If he/she had a smidgen of common sense he/she would know that education is the key to prosperity. Interesting that the left wants to declare the right as being for profits but against a system that will provide the pathway for profits.

The saddest part of it all is that obama and many on the left think that simply by throwing money into education is the answer. We need to correct the structural issues that has led to our decline in k-12 educational global rankings. So far we still have the best university and graduate programs and the foreign students are willing to spend more to get that education.

Like Santorum's politics or not, he's exactly what you see (yes, I know they are all political animals - but Santorum and Newt are entirely different species of politician animals). Gingrich would constantly try to take the reins away from Santorum. Nope - noone wants Gingrich at their back. And Santorum is a bit too independent for Romney. I think we will have to look elsewhere for Romney's VP. (and I'm not even going to speculate - I'm not fond of the names I keep coming up with)

I think we will have to look elsewhere for Romney's VP. (and I'm not even going to speculate - I'm not fond of the names I keep coming up with)

I don't mind speculating Katheryn :) Although I doubt it's a realistic possibility, I think Condoleeza Rice would make a fantastic VP and an excellent addition to a Romney ticket. Extremely smart, brings foreign affairs experience, and even knows football.

Interesting JC - that is good. She would add the foreign policy factor to his economic factor. That would pretty much cover most people's concerns. And -da,da - the women factor, and a two for one - person of color factor. I like it. The football - eh-that's gotta just be to appeal to the guy factor, cause it's not doing much for me.

I have to say JC - that is one I had not thought of,I keep thinking it's gotta be a southerner or even better a conservative. But I do believe your choice is a far better criteria to use.(well, except for the football thing)

Santorum has said states should be allowed to outlaw contraceptives.

                                      First it's abortion,then contraceptives.

No-Jo all the candidates have signed the person-hood amendment pledge. The pledge vows to make contraception illegal with the passing of the amendment.

It also plans to overturn Roe v Wade and being you are human from the moment of conception now all miscarriages would be a murder investigation. Being that heavy women have more miscarriages caused by their weight, can we fill our prisons with over weight women? What are they to do if they aren't allowed birth control to keep from having miscarriages?

The pledge basically makes women into second class citizens with someone else in charge of her reproductive rights, even to contraception.

How am I a free person if I am not allowed by the religious republican taliban to make choices about my own body?

How does telling my doctor what medically unecessary procedures he or she has to perform by state law freedom? If the religious republican taliban can step between you and your doctor, no telling what they want to do next.

nojoe: try to follow along. What do you think is meant by "personhood" amendments that all Republicans now running for President say they support? Not only would they criminalize all abortions, they would criminalize many types of contraceptives. You know, perhaps if you found a woman and talked about how contraceptives work, you'd begin to understand the discussion??

Santorum does need to knock Gingrich out, just to retain a flicker of hope. What's more, he needs Gingrich's delegates. For all the criticism Romney has taken over making the math argument - and it was a dumb thing for a candidate to do - he is right about that.

For Santorum to actually be the nominee, he needs to prevent Romney from getting to the convention with a majority, and then he needs to win in that first convention vote. For that to happen, he would have to get there with a respectable delegate total, and seem to be on the upswing - seem to have momentum. And he would have to maintain that sense of momentum while most likely seeing Romney walk away with huge numbers of delegates from California and New York. In other words, Santorum has to win a bunch of other states. The only way that happens is for him to be the only Romney alternative.

That's a tight set of needle eyes to thread.

Now, we're still talking about the party operating within its rules. There's nothing legally binding about those rules. For obvious reasons, the GOP would rather not deal with the PR nightmare of just tossing those rules in waste basket. A lot of people have donated a lot of money, and to tell them those donations basically were wasted on campaign strategies playing to a certain set of rules when in the end the party might just pick someone else to nominate obviously would be problemmatic.

But, if things get bad enough, as in the nominee not just losing the general election but also seen as likely to cause nationwide losses down the ticket, it is possible. Being stuck with an unloved frontrunner who people don't like and don't trust arguably could create that 'bad enough' situation.

Perhaps. And, then again, perhaps not. If you wanted both of your opponents to stay in the race, can you think of a better way than to get their egos involved in the decision making process. And, since Romney already knows that he is unlikely to win either Mississippi or Alabama (all he needs is to place well enough to scoop up some delegates), he can spend much less and allow the two of them to empty their war chests trying to out "conservative" the other in the south.

Personally I would like to see Gingrich drop out. For all that I do not care for Santorum he states his convictions and he has run a grass roots campaign and done well even with his deficiencies in money and organization. And he making Romney work for his money.

But on the other hand - the RNC says Gingrich has 107 candidates to Santorum's 95 (yes, and it doesn't seem quite right to not include Iowa) - by that tally Gingrich is still in mathematically.

Lot of maneuvering in the RNC. I think they are actually afraid Santorum just might pull it off.

This weekend I listened to Ira Glass interview Grover Norquist on This American Life and it affected me for hours afterwards. Norquist is the lobbyist who hypnotized Republican leaders into making low taxes the centerpiece of their political agenda. To listen to this guy chortle over his effect on our country is chilling. In NJ, the Republicans have cut public spending to the point that one third of the police force in Trenton had to be laid off. What happens when you fire cops? Oh, the crime rate climbs. Younger cops are cut first, so there goes the next generation. Norquist doesn't care, he lives in a gated community elsewhere. Seems to reflect the attitude of today's Republican Party.

I couldn't help thinking about our founding fathers and their commitment to the common good. So called 'Tea Partiers' seem to have forgotten Benjamin Franklin's role in creating public libraries and volunteer fire departments. Ayn Rand did not found this country - she started as a scriptwriter in Hollywood. It's time Republicans woke up from their Norquist-induced sleep and rediscovered what it means to love your country.

Arming law abiding citizens is cheaper than hiring a union police officer. I think our founding fathers would see the logic in that. Have you seen what union fireman get paid? I wonder what Ben Franklin would think happened to his Volunteer fire departments today??

So, you suggest that we, as a nation, become a pack of vigilantes?

                                          Amy,

                                          you havent a clue.

Immigrants came to America to escape government tyranny. Which is why the Founding Fathers based our Constitution on the notion of limited government. The federal government was given few powers, and the rest left to the people.

Now you statists are destroying that notion. You worship Big Government.

Have you seen what union fireman get paid?

Have you seen what Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum got paid as lobbyists after they left public office? I'd rather pay firemen what they are worth than see anymore Republicans get paid millions for advising corporations how to get the most in tax payer dollars. In practical terms, Republicans love Big Government the most - and make the most money funneling public money to corporations.

Yall hear about that "lady" that one $1 million in the lotto and thought she still deserved to use her food stamps? Afterall, she said "I have two houses to pay for." That's a straight-up liberal entitlement mentality. Was anyone here pissed about this story or do you all see nothing wrong with her doing that?

Amy---is this the interview where Norquist said he came up with the no tax increase pledge when he was in 7th grade?

The folks on the right always come up with these ideas that can sound OK in theory----we should have less government, for example. Supply side economics is another. In practice, however, they don't work. We do need police and firefighters and we need to regulate certain industries. And 30 years of trickle down economics has shown us that it just doesn't work.

Boob in Va.........They came to escape government tyranny, and now here we are in 2012 back fighting government tyranny as republicans push tyrannical legislation against women, led by your Vagina Probe (VP) Governor O'Donnell.

Yeah, we've sure come a long way from government tyranny!!!!!!. Republicans love BIG Government when it suits them.

Of course it's outrageous a lottery winner tried to keep her food stamps. Just as outrageous as Romney bragging he only pays 14% in taxes and "not a dollar more," while exhorting the government to buy more destroyers, jet fighters, tanks, et al. He wants a big military, but he doesn't want to personally pay for it. He thinks the money should come from kicking sick people off Medicaid.

An entitlement mentality is disgusting where ever you find it.

When Obama was elected my biggest fear was the expansion of the entitlement mentality. The belief that someone else is saving for your life's needs has lead so many people into poverty it is sickening. Imagine how the people in Greece feel now that they are begging other countries for support now that their entitlement society has run dry. I am encouraged by the number of 2008 first time voters who are taking a far more educated approach to their ballots in 2012. Please help keep Americans strong and independent. Vote for better leadership in 2012....

When Bush was elected my biggest fear was that he'd take us to war in Iraq, the one his father stopped short of...didn't forsee he'd also begin a war in Afghanistan and bring the nation to the brink of financial meltdown with a wallstreet entitlement mentality of unbridled greed. Now that President Obama has ended the Iraq war, winding down the Afghanistan war and turned us back from the brink of financial disaster, KEEP America strong and independent by turning back the Republican war on women, on education, and on reason itself. Vote for better leadership in Congress in 2012 and steady, educated leadership to be retained in the White House. Obama/Biden 2012.

Wall Street paid back the bail out AP. How much of your money do you think Obama is going to get back from the people who stopped making payments on thier federally backed mortgages?? Although it was nice of him to settle with the big banks for $25 billion and entitle $1200 to the people who already stopped paying their mortgages. Remember 90% of us have always paid our debt and always will. Regardless of who is elected Santa of Washington....

So when is El Duce going to get rid of Bush's Patriot Act like he promised? or close Guantanamo like he promised? It's easy to keep going on and on so I'll just sum it up. Obama is nothing more than Bush III. Same sh-t, different piles.

Amy, thanks. Wall Street Lobbyist Norquist has a lot to answer for. His anti-tax plan that began 30 years ago under President Reagan is hurting the 21st century prospects of the USA, hurting ordinary Americans big-time and the economic future of our globe.

Recently lobbyist Norquist said that GOP only requires a President who can rubber stamp (e.g. A.L.E.C.) corporate-approved legislation. He doesn't want a President who can think for himself:

"We are not auditioning for fearless leader. We don't need a president to tell us in what direction to go. We know what direction to go. We want the Paul Ryan budget. ... We just need a president to sign this stuff."

UAW - that's right, it is called government assistance for a reason. Most Americans believe in providing a foothold to Vets, students, victims of natural disasters. It is only a few like you that would take these groups, line them up in ditches, shoot them through the head, and use the backhoe to cover your tracks.

Why the GOP ever let this guy Norquist hamstring them like he has done, I will never understand.

UAW: Wallstreet "paid back the bailout"??? I think you're confused..it's main street that's done the paying not Wall Street. Only HALF of the TARP relief has been paid back and that half is mainly from folks like the automakers (GM, Chrysler, and GMAC) not "Wall Street" --Bank of America has paid ZILCH on the $97 billion set aside load to insure against losses from the Merrill Lynch merger--Citibank hasn't paid any of the $224 BILLION it received...AIG is at about half....It's the STIMULUS that worked well...not the Wallstreet bail out. Your CONSERVATIVE guide to denial is fully in tact: Whine about a pittance spent to encourage adoptions...but say NOTHING in your long whine about one of the biggest government relief prgorams out there?? by any chance, do you take a mortgage deduction? Welcome to government relief...

That is touching RedDev, I think we can all agree widows and orphans should be helped. But how did we ever get to the point that contraception coverage is mandated by the president and the tax payers liability? How did we get to the point that able bodied Americans need soooo many programs? Expanding entitlements doesn't help Americans grow stronger it helps us grow weaker.

Come on board with us. Let's get the entitlement programs controlled so we are helping people that really need help. Let's increase subsidy to them and decrease it for the rest.....

Republicans want "limited government" - because that model's worked so well in Mexico, Haiti and the Sudan.

Personally, I prefer the government model of Japan, a country ravished by a natural disaster a year ago, yet it's people are not still sleeping in tents. Call me an Eisenhower Moderate, or a Benjamin Franklin acolyte, but I believe in good government, not drowned, dysfunctional, shrunken government.

UAW: ...Well at least you are consistent...consistently wrong. Contraceptives are of course NOT covered by taxpayers--they are covered by insurance, which is not taxpayer funded. Try and keep up. That's what the argument is about. Women work. They pay for their insurance. They should not be prohibited from having contraceptive coverage in that insurance that they already pay for (and in fact, that's why 28 states MANDATE coverage for the insurance women already pay for, so they are not paying TWICE). Contraceptives are now "entitlements"??? Good grief..what's next...an argument that insurance is only called insurance if you're not female?

Amy, well said. Grover Norquist is a disgusting shyster protecting his personal wealth with no regard for this country. The right call themselves "patriots", claim they love this country yet they have systematically undermined the very government they claim to love by believing Grover's notion that tax cuts do not reduce revenues. When conservatives drown government in a bathtub, what kind of country will remain? These fools and the sheep who cling to their every word do not even understand that failure to provide revenue for Government means that Government becomes weak both militarily and economically; we starve democracy for personal wealth and greed. Starving the beast also starves the very liberty and freedom conservatives like Grover claim to love.

AP, I had that same fear about President Bush and Iraq.

UAW - this is how far out of touch you are . At no point, in any way, has the president mandated tax payers should be liable for contraception. This misconception is the product of the right's out of control adrenal gland. That is the same adrenal gland that supports arming citizens and blowing out each other's brains vs. relying upon law enforcement. The same mind set that believes home schooling is more valuable than public education. The same mind set that will kill a human to save a fetus. Contributions to society by you and your ilk are non-existent. Katheryn,

The supposed threat from Norquist is that he will use his Koch cash (he is a Koch lobbyist) to boot the offenders out of office, if they renage on their anti-tax pledge to him/them.

These same GOPers signed an Oath of Office to the American people. So it is an insight into their standard of non-ethics, the degree to which GOP congressionals will not act to undo 30 years of Ayn Rand and get out of the trap -- that is working against American recovery & hurting GOP constituents beyond all reckoning.

UAW - I agree Entitlements have gotten out of hand. They need to have a serious look at each program. But not every program and of course, we seem to disagree on what is an entitlement. No one considers what helps them an entitlement (and that includes conservatives and Republicans) - it's always someone else's entitlement.

I realize the list is alphabetical; but it struck me as one more Republican Rant against the unintended pregnancy issue.

They don't want promiscuity of any kind, ever, no matter what - unless Newt falls out of love with his wife, or John McCain, same.

They don't want Birth Control of any kind, because it condones promiscuity,...see above.

They don't want to 'pay' for Birth Control - EVER! and seem to be anti birth control, ever!

They don't want Abortions performed - EVER! (even in the case of rape and incest - those bonus gifts from G-d, thank you Santorum).

They don't want an entitled society - EVER!

And that includes ADOPTION Tax Credits? (hence my reference to the 'list')

So,...will someone who claims to be a Christian PLEASE for the love of all things holy explain to me How to handle the UNINTENDED PREGNANCIES?

Bob -- Immigrants came here for many reasons, including fleeing government tyranny. Starvation, hope and escape from religious persecution, to name a few. The very first settler's here were fleeing religious persecution. Once here they began to practice what they had fled from, religious persecution. We are a varied group of immigrants, Bob. But one thing we Americans have in common is we all have immigrant ancestors.

Neither eisenhower or franklin dealt with large governments, although franklin was likely motivated by the british use of mandated controls.

I commend you for believing in "good government", but hardly proves that bigger is better. We all know that obama advocates more government control in all of our lives.

Interesting on how you use the terms drowned and dysfunctional. From a historical standpoint, smaller government doesn't drown their citizens in regulations beyond basic rights or by being dysfunctional by having so many departments that trip over each other with conflicting rules and regulations.

UAW: forcing women into vaginal probes and sonograms and excluding birth control from insurance, supporting laws that say the constitution's right to privacy clause does not include women, apparantly ought to be overlooked by women voters, but then you'd have better luck making that argument to women who are not of child bearing age, don't care about those who are, or who had been raped, or who were poor. I guess you might try to put a coalition together like that, and lord knows it's being tried, but to argue it'll be successful and that it isn't "a war on women"??? I don't know what someone like you WOULD call a war on women...guess, as long as the burkas aren't being handed out, it's all just "suggestions" by a concerned, caring government nanny? As to your own government "entitlements"...you can refuse that mortgage interest deduction on your home any time you like...AND make sure you refuse and give back your social security check. I'm guessing neither will be high up to take off your list of "handouts"..

AP you are correct. Our political system isnt based on what is right or fair any more. The bottom line is: If you want to get elected or re-elected teh easist way is to promise to take as much as you can away from the smallest voting block and give away as much of that as you can to the largest voting block.

You don't have to try and sweeten it up by using words like rape victims, burkas, vaginal probes, poor, wars on women etc. Just tell me that you are taking my money and giving it to someone else for votes. I'm a big boy I can handle the truth.

Honestly I make no secret of my desire to pay less of my money in taxes. If you want to call keeping my money an entitlement I am ok with that to. I do feel entitled to keep what was mine in the first place.

UAW: No, you can't handle the truth or recognize it. Anything that benefits you is to be called "fair" and anything that benefits anyone else who lives in this country is "socialism". You apparently build the roads you travel on by yourself, pay for the school you attended (by yourself)? I sure as hell don't want any of my substantial tax dollars used for mandatory vaginal probes and useless ultrasounds until the American Taliban wing of the Republican party figures out how they can keep women out of the US Constitution's right to privacy clause altogether. You don't comprehend the obvious: mortgage deductions are done by "entitlements", the same way feeding hungry children who happened to pick the wrong parents are "entitlements". The argument that only the one that benefits you is moral is not a winning one, although heaven knows you make it often enough. Personally, I'd at least like to make sure my tax dollars go for something besides making sure Exxon has higher profits next year. That way you and I can keep our mortgage deductions AND fill some bellies, all the while turning attention to something besides obsession with legislating women's vaginas.

Again we find a little common ground AP. Schools, Roads, Sewer Systems, water systems, Truly disabled all worthy investments for our tax dollars. But come one paying for your own contraception might cause you to miss nickle beer night. Let's let insurance pay for the major expenses so everyone's premiums are lower. No sense giving that money to an insurance company and let them take 15-20% just for providing coverage for a routine expense we can budget ourselves.....

It's not a war on women it's just common sense.

UAW -- Why is it you have a problem with government mandating insurance to include coverage for women's healthcare but never complain about the government mandating hospitals to care for anyone using the emergency room, regardless of ability to pay? Both are mandates that require business pick up the tab. Healthcare insurance in general is socializing the costs amongst all participating. And the bill from a hospital has huge mark ups to cover the costs of those not able to pay for their care. Whether insurance pays the hospital bill or someone pays cash both pick up the tab for others who are unable to afford healthcare.

UAW - half of the 6 million pregnancies in this country are unintended pregnancies. The cost of contraceptives is $1 to nearly $4 it costs insurers or tax funded medicaid for prenatal care and delivery. And that does not even include government assistance programs for mother and child if the mother is on the lower end of the payscale. You end up paying one way or the other - it's just cheaper on the front end than the back.

Again a voice from the right brings up the stimulus and the misrepresentation that first it was "Obama's stimulus" and second that it failed.

The original Obama stimulus was significantly more than the watered down numbers that the Republicans demanded. All respectable economists said that the stimulus was too small to create a long term meaningful result.

The country was losing upwards of 700,000 jobs a month at the end of Bushes term. That cannot be argued. We are now seeing PRIVATE SECTOR jobs coming on line at a rate of roughly 200,000 a month. That alone is an improvement that is making a huge difference to those getting those jobs.

"The $787 billion economic stimulus package was approved by Congress in February, 2009. The package was designed to quickly jumpstart economic growth, and save between 900,000-2.3 million jobs. The package allocated funds as follows:

                                                        • $288 billion in tax cuts.
                                                        • $224 billion in extended unemployment benefits, education and health care.
                                                        • $275 billion for job creation using federal contracts, grants and loans.

By most economic indicators, the Economic Stimulus Package was a success. In March 2009, before it was launched, Q1 GDP was -6.4% (it has since been revised to -4.9%)and the Dow had slid to 6,500. By Q4 2009, GDP was +5% and the Dow had risen to 10,428. Not all of that success can be attributed to the Stimulus Package, since expansive monetary policy and strong emerging markets also helped boost the economy. However, those were all in place in March 2009. No doubt, the economic stimulus package inspired the confidence needed turn the economy around."

Hawk - 227K jobs barely exceeds population growth nor does it do anything for all those millions underemployed, giving up looking for a job or those forced to leave the job market and go on SS.

The best part of this report were the revised figures upward for january and december. I would hope that the jobs report in may, june and july would be significantly higher, especially with all the service sector jobs added for summer work.

Yep, stimulas l did such a great job with another 800 billion added to our debt for temporary jobs and you think stimulas ll would have been better? american,

You need to work on your reading comprehension and come back later. 24 consecutive months of PRIVATE SECTOR job growth seems pretty well sustained to me. About 3.5 million jobs over that time period can hardly be considered a failure to the 3.5 million people who got those jobs. Just stopping the 700,00 jobs lost every month is an accomplishment.

America remains mired in the longest jobs recession since the Great Depression. It's been 49 months since the U.S. hit peak employment in January 2008. And with nonfarm payrolls still 5.33 million below their old high, the jobs slump will continue for several more years.

The previous jobs recession record — 47 months — came during and after the comparatively mild 2001 recession, which saw unemployment climb to only 6.3%. The average job recovery time since 1980 is 29 months, not including the current slump.

The labor market won't truly return to health until some 10 million positions are created to rehire all those who lost their jobs and to absorb new workers.

Mo - what would you consider the new "normal" unemployment rate should be?

Job1 - Mathematically speaking, how many years will it take to rehire all those who lost jobs in the recession? You know, those that are currently not a part of the current unemployment rolls. Given a low ball estimate that 150K potential new (never before hired) job applicants are entering the workforce every month, how long job1?

Rightly or wrongly, the right wannabees are offering more than just a rhetorical plan that obama gave us in 2008. To top it off, obama has to campaign on his record, the right not so much.

Regardless of the outcome in november the right will have to redefine their message, something that the left should do as well, but probably won't if by chance obama carries the day.

No way is he going to get "kicked out" of the race by anybody, especially Mr. Santorum. The Republicans are too busy running against one another and they'll continue to do so until the convention. By then, it'll be too late and President Obama will be re-elected.

Outisde of the Kansas City area, check your brain at the door religion is rampant. It's basically OK to blow a man's brains out when he's sitting next to his wife in church. In other words, it's Santorum country. I should know; I have the misfortune of living there.

I have lived in states I didn't like. I lived in Georgia for a year while my husband was in training to go to Vietnam. Could I have moved, yes, but I chose to stay with my family.

Unlike you, not everyone can just move because they don't like the state they are living in. But you have the freedom to leave here anytime you please.

My comment was meant to show how ludicrous it is to group an entire state's politics, religion or anything you want to call it by the actions of few. That would be like saying for example all people of a certain religion or hair color or political party behave exactly the same way. I never once said ALL of the views expressed on this site were intolerable.

Want to end social security and medicare vote for a republican.

Great, so obama didn't take away $500 billion over ten years from medicare to fund obamacare or offer up another cut of $600 billion from medicare last fall as part of a "balanced" approach to reduce our debt and get the debt ceiling raised? Putting these little tidbits to the side, both SS and medicare are not sustainable with its present funding and outlays. It seems that you favor the plan of "business as usual" Nice to see that your selfishness and greed takes precedence over sustainability.

Want to end your right to choose vote for a republican.

Cool, so now you want to eliminate everyones choice on who to vote for. I imagine next that you will want to change the presidential term limits so that obama can be leader for life. Lmao!

Want to end your right to birth control vote for a republican.

Really? If you had any common sense you would realize the fallacy of this. Seems like you are confusing "free birth control pills" with everyone carrying insurance paying for them.

Want to end your right to clean air and water vote for a republican.

Obviously, you believe that everyone is just like yourself in willing to follow someone off a cliff. Good luck with that. Even obama has said that there are bad regulations.

Want to end your right to health care vote for a republican.

There has never been a "right to healthcare". It has always been optional. I find it interesting that obama touts "affordable" healthcare, but doesn't define "affordable". Also even his plan will have those "evil vouchers" and require all taxpayers to pay income tax on what the employer contributes to health insurance.

Want to end your right to freedom from religion vote for a republican.

Yet obama was more than willing to force the catholic church to change a long established doctrine. BTW - the wording is actually...

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof...

Unless you are supporting changing the 1st amendment to eliminate the reference to religion, your argument has no merit. Of course, feel free to provide the links where any republican presidential hopeful wants to change the 1st amendment.

Want to end your right to unions and having a say so in the work place vote for a repulican.

Dept of labor has negated the need for unions with regards to safety, work hours and pay. The nice thing about private sector unions is that they still have to compete with non-union workers for jobs. On the other hand, public sector unions (and I will exempt, in part the protective services) hold the taxpayer hostage to wages and bennies not always available in the private sector. You know, the sector that provides all the income to pay for all government programs and government jobs. I wonder how long you expect the poor and middle class to tolerate such an injustice?

Want to end the laws that are stopping wall street from robbing us again vote for a republican.

Robbing us? How droll... To an extent they did follow the laws of the land at the time. Laws that both the left and right created over the years. Let's see, the finacial reform act was passed in 2010, right? Yet it is now 2012 and the regs are still being written. Not a real good sign that everything in it will work as intended.

Want to bankrupt America so the rich 1% can have another tax cut vote for a republican.

Oh boy, all those rich democrats like gates and buffet will now support the right.

So sweetie, what will reduce our deficit and debt faster? Eliminating the obama (bush) tax cuts for the 2% to give government an additional revenue stream of $800 billion over 10 years or eliminating the tax cuts for the other 98% that will add about $2.6 TRILLION to our revenue stream. Personally, I am in favor of reducing government spending and eliminating the obama (bush) tax cuts across the board. You?

With all the good things that republicans offer us, I just don't understand why I am not stupid enough to vote for one of them.

Actually it was jan 2011. Allowing for new member orientation and first trying to get obamacare repeled the dmocrats effectively tied up the house to create a FY 2011 budget that obama and company were to incompetent to pass in 2010.

Then we have the FY2011 budget proposal that senate leader reid tabled with no senate alternative and obama cherry picking items for ridicule.

Moving on, obama and company wanted a blank check to raise the debt ceiling without any thought for fiscal responsibility and always with the condition of "my way or the highway", while disregarding S&P's warning for a credit downgrade in april 2011.

Then we have obamas AJA which failed to gain traction in either the senate or house.

Then we have obama and the senate only interested in a two month extension of the payroll tax cuts while the house wanted a full year passage prior to jan 2012. Not exactly a shining moment for either obama or the senate.

Sure seems like the left liked playing obstructionists in 2011

It would be a good thing for the country to have a real debate between a conservative like Santorum who really does represent what the GOP has become and President Obama who is a pragmatic, moderate on some things and liberal on others democrat--like many Americans. As VP Biden said in Tampa, the GOP used to "hide the ball" by claiming they supported social security, etc; now they aren't even trying to "hide the ball", what they are up to is out for everyone to see. We see it especially in the GOP controlled state houses with all the anti-women legislation, and it spread right to Federal Government with the anti-contraception talk, the Blunt-Rubio amendment. They aren't hiding the ball any more.

I've never seen a party such as the current GOP who seem to relish gloom, doom and a bad economy. Guess all the fear and lies they've been fed for so long has made them incapable of actually seeing good news as good news. Try wrapping your head around that.

We have not seen real wages rise in this country since Ronald Reagan invented supply side economics (previously call trickle down). G. W. Bush lowered taxes and promised it would create jobs. Santorum and Romney are selling more of the same crap. We have some real problems that need to be addressed but they put forth programs that increase the debt from where it would be now (and say the consequences of their tax policies can't be measured as a response), Gingrich wants to put a colony on the moon (and deliver $2.50 per gallon gasoline) and Santorum does not believe in separation of church and state. Ron Paul is the only honest one in the bunch and he has no chance. They are making Obama look pretty good.

Supply-side was just one reason I left the GOP. It was also the massive deficit and debt he created and then tried to fix by raising taxes but most of the taxes raised were on the middle class. He talked of small government yet he grew the size of government, his anti-union, anti-teacher rhetoric, the lies about welfare queens, the shift to the social/cultural wedge issues, the attacks on women's rights. Ronald Reagan turned this country from a creditor nation to a debtor nation. Clinton was on the road to turning that around until Bush 43 was elected. We are where we are today because of policies Reagan began and the modern GOP drove those policies to an even more extreme level. The hole the GOP dug for this country will take a couple decades to climb out.

I suppose the banks went out and held up the populace at gunpoint to buy houses, right? Naturally the left didn't pressure bush2 to open up more housing for minorities or support government backing for loans that fannie and freddy made.

Yep, clinton was turning us around, his administration only added $1.1 trillion to our public debt while reagan only added billions to it. Who can forget the dot com bust?No wonder why obama reads up on reagan and even supports trickle down economics. I must say I find it interesting that the left hasn't recognized this yet and bitched.

Obama would be miles ahead if he remained focused on the economy rather than pushing through likidy split a massive healthcare and financial reform plan. Who will ever forget pelosi saying that the healthcare plan was so good, that it didn't need to be read.

You are quite the humorist jody.

(That "vaginal probe" thing wasn't quite the catchy campaign they thought it might be.) Maybe the DNC can help them come up with some better ones so it at least LOOKS like a real race (I hear the "moon colony" thing didn't work so well either).

We were unequivocal in our rejection of Santorum. He lost by 18 points, the biggest loss for a sitting U.S. Senator since 1980.

So can Santorum — a politician who engenders such strong and negative feelings in the voters of his home state — truly believe that those home state voters are going to sit quietly on the sidelines while he tries to persuade Republican primary voters in other states that he’s their best choice the be the leader of the free world, when we didn’t even think he was our best choice to represent Pennsylvania in the Senate?

Let’s just cut to the chase here — he’s underestimated our resolve to spread the truth about Rick Santorum’s record and his agenda for America.

Specter once a Republican switched to be a democrat. Specter became the culminating and final vote for ObamaCare. For you conservatives out there, Specter then went on to call for the repeal of the Defense of Marriage Act. ObamaCare depending on the source states that it will cost between $400 billion and $1.2 trillion. The Congressional Budget Office states that the cost will be $829 billion with job losses totaling around 1.6 million. All because Santorum willingly supported the Specter. In fact, read the PA articles he was on a crusade to get Specter reelected. Watch Santorum the Enemy Within
