In bipartisan vote, House jobs bill passes overwhelmingly

In a rare act of bipartisanship on Capitol Hill, the House has overwhelmingly passed the JOBS Act, 390-23, a package of six bills dedicated to helping small businesses get access to capital and create jobs. The package had been spearheaded by House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) and had the blessing of the White House's Office of Management and Budget.

The package of bills works to cut through some of the bureaucratic red tape involved in small business start-ups, such as allowing smaller companies to go public sooner, and getting rid of regulations that involve raising business capital. Of the six bills in the package, four had already passed with overwhelming bipartisan support in the House, but had yet to be brought up for a vote in the Senate.

The JOBS Act now goes to the Senate where it’s fate as a stand-alone bill is unclear. Senate Democrats indicated today that they intend to introduce their own version of the package next week, likely in an effort to take away steam from what, from an optics standpoint, looks like a Republican legislative win.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) took issue with the bill today, and while she supported the measure, she called the bill “meager” and “jobs bill lite”. House Democrats had also hit Republicans for branding the bill the “JOBS Act,” with House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) claiming the package was “not a jobs bill.”

"Just because you regurgitate a few bills and package them together, even though we've already passed them out doesn't mean you have a jobs agenda,” House Democratic Caucus Vice Chairman Xavier Becerra told reporters earlier this week.

But Cantor was undeterred by the criticism of the package after its passage today, and in a rare showing of agreement with President Obama, called on the Senate to pass the bill “with dispatch”.

“The President has endorsed this JOBS Act," Cantor said, "and if we want to act with dispatch so that small businesses and start-ups can get going again, it seems to me the simplest way forward is to listen to the president on this one."

It is good that something positive and helpful to a lot of people will benefit from this move. Finally.

Everytime I see a conservative poster comment about those awful Senate democrats, I smile because the right so easily disregards the GOP filibuster abuse, the republican senators who refuse time after time to allow legislation and nominees to come to the Senate floor for debate because it isn't "their way" and because "compromise is a dirty word." Don't forget all the jobs bills the GOP senators filibustered and blocked last fall and early this year--not once but repeated filibusters because "giving President Obama a win" was unacceptable.

Republicans sent Teabaggers to Washington for the specific purpose of "gridlocking" the system so that nothing could get done, NOW Republicans want credit for President Obama getting things done IN SPITE OF REPUBLICAN GRIDLOCK!

What a crock!

What REALLY happened is President Obama's poll ratings are SKY HIGH and Republicans want to try to steal some of that momentum and take a ride on the President's approval ratings, and that is all!

I support any sincere efforts to improve economic recovery regardless of which Party it originates from -- though of course this could not have been done without bipartisanship and Dems being willing to cooperate (unlike the GOP/TP). Also, Teapublicans -- It is too late in the president's first term to take credit for ANY economic improvement in the 2012 election, which is only months away. You are a day late and a dollar short, so no cigar until you prove yourselves over a long-term.

What is frustrating is these six bills are probably the same or similar versions of the American Jobs Act that President Obama asked them to pass last September.

When a bill is per the Teapublican agenda, such as the War on Women, then it is put on steroids. This bill was not per the Teapublican agenda, so as Pelosi said it is "Jobs Bill Lite." Anything positive is good to see, but unfortunately this is somewhat symbolic pandering by the GOP/TP (as usual). So if the Senate can get a stonger, real Jobs Bill from this, then we can truly cheer.

The Senate should take it, amend it making it more like the original jobs bills President Obama proposed, send back to the conference committee and then dare the GOP to not vote for it. Nothing like going into an election season voting against jobs during a down economy.

American Girl, better do some research. The Republican House has sent ( with Democratic support ) 18 jobs bills to the Democratic senate. So far, Harry Reid, a Democrat, has killed 17 of them ( tabling means not allowing debate or vote).

The Senate no longer needs to approve any people Obama nominates, as Obama just appoints them when no one is looking. If a Republican President had lied and trampled the Constitution the way Obama has, the media and Democrats would be screaming so loud, you wouldn't need a mike to hear them. I voted for Obama in 08. I will not make the same mistake twice.

Your post is such obvious Faux news regurgitation it is almost not worth responding to you. Foolishly just undoing regulations and cutting taxes are not "jobs bills" they are profit creators. And yea appointing Corday was so horrible huh, so guess its ok for the right to block legislation that has already been voted on and that isn't tearing up the constitution.

Lets see the President appointed Corday so the new legislation could work as intended and he appointed members to the NRLB and stood up for the American people and not the stooges of the 1%

The democrats must now do something to take the bite out of the republican bill. See, it is a stand alone bill; that means no pork added. No pet projects.

How much do you want to bet that any Senate bill will include millions of dollars spent on , what? So far, the jobs created by the Stimulus bills have cost $200,000.00 per job created.

I knew it wouldn't last long with you WCA. True to form you start spouting inaccuracies and perceptions that have nothing to do with the reality of why gas prices are rising.

Reasons for the rising price of gas have nothing to do with domestic drilling or the Keystone Pipeline. They do have everything to do with:

          1) Saber rattling rhetoric regarding bombing Iran.

          2) An improving global economy, where countries like China and Japan are utilizing more oil than before.

          3) Wall Street speculation by persons other than end users (Airline companies, trucking firms, state and local entities, etc.)

This is the problem with politicizing gas prices, its a red-herring and informed voters can spot it from a mile away. Now the Low Information Voting (LIV) crowd will surely eat this up as it conforms to the belief that somehow PRESIDENTS have the ability to control the price of oil, which they don't.

Oil prices arent coming down unless we get control of the Speculators. Google Commodity Futures modernization act of 2000. It was the single most damming law in history and is still reaking havoc today. Once you understand the implications of this law, you should be able to see why this is such a big mess. Not the president, or the EPA or woodsey the owl can get in the way of controls from speculator banks like Goldman Sachs, Citibank and UBS.

Electric and Natural gas offer alternatives to the oil market. Considering that we are late in the game relative to the rest of the world, Alternative sources will reduce dependency and lower demand which should help lower the cost of fuel in the long run. If it doesnt, most of us may not care after we switched to something else.

Excerpts from 2008 on FOX News when gas prices rose: "no president has the power to increase or decrease the price of oil"; it's the "global market, global demand"; it's "middle east problems"; "oil speculators"; "it's really out of Bush's hands". Bill O'Reilly, "understand that any candidate who says he/she will bring down oil and gas prices is B.S."

Fast forward to FOX in 2012: It's President Obama's policies; he's suppressing the supply; its all those regulations, he isn't allowing drilling. Naturally in 2012 FOX ignores that the very same conditions exist today that existed in 2008. But, hey, in 2008, it was a GOPer in the White House.

So to the conservatives spouting what FOX is saying in 2012, did you spout what FOX said in 2008 or did you blame President Bush? Facts are facts and everytime conservatives repeat the GOP talking points that it's President Obama's fault, they simply prove how easily they are duped by those who really don't give a darn about the price of gas.

          kingofmyhill:

This whole oil angle is an example of someone wrapping their consipiracy around someone elses neck for their own singular benefit. High oil prices arent favorable to a president but the people with something to gain are the ones who control it and have found an excuse for gouging the public with theilr controls. The Koch Brothers, and the Investment banks over inflate the value of oil for their own personal gain. They don't care who is hurt. This is not to say that the Koch brothers dont own businesses that are also legitimate. The problem comes when schemes are hatched that create severe duress outside the supply/demand curve and these schemes use our taxpayer resources and the lives of soldiers for the personal gain of the few. Investment Banks dont create a product when they speculate. They dont perform a service to the community. They dont even care much about the oil that they purchase and hold.

I think its time that America has a conversation with our Government about restricting commodity trading primarily to those who actually use to the resource to make products with. It really is core of the matter. To those of you who are crying that it was unfair to criticize the Bush Administration must recall that the Bush family is heavily invested in oil and the World markets. It is a conflict of interest to use a position of public leadership to covertly, overtly or otherwise advance your personal investments. This is why it was fair to Criticize Bush on this matter. History has already shown that he focused heavily on his own personal and family interests.

What a great plan from Obama! Have the gas prices go to unaffordable levels, and that will knock many that can't afford it off the roads. Less usage, less "pollution". Brilliant! Joe - they're not about to watch anything that debunks their lies. They already know they're lying - it's what they do because they have nothing else.

Facts totally confuse them - they run in circles!

Hey! You and Rick Perry have something in common! You both forgot about the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency), you know, the one that monitors our clean air and clean water that Republicans are desperate to abolish so they pollute our air and drinking water at will.

And since when do Republicans care about ANYBODY but themselves, and their oil and gas stocks? Never!

The vast majority of the American People KNOW we're much better off with Democrats running the show, otherwise, all Republicans are going to do is give more tax cuts and tax breaks to the rich, and repeal the minimum wage laws and disband employee unions in order to force pay cuts on American Workers.

What we're going to be watching is campaign commercials of Barack Obama (all six of them) in which Obama rails Bush for high gas prices in 2008.

Sheldon Adelson will spend his 100 million running the endless loop showing how the President is nothing more than a hiporite, double speaking charlatan.

All of us will be rolling on the floor laughing. Today, he shot himself in the other foot by calling democrats and telling them to sink keystone. OPTICS BABY!

The JOBS Act now goes to the Senate where it's fate as a stand-alone bill is unclear. Senate Democrats indicated today that they intend to introduce their own version of the package next week, likely in an effort to take away steam from what, from an optics standpoint, looks like a Republican legislative win.

            Un-Freakin-believable.

Who gives a damn about "optics"?????

WCA, one of the very few times I agree with what you posted.

If the Democrats play politics with this bill then they deserve to be lambasted in the press and on blogs like these just the same as when the Republicans do it.

This is not about "OPTICS". This is about doing what is in the best interest of all AMERICANS!

This is not unusual except for the past few years. The Senate and the House used to do this often. Each side has ideas they think should be included. We've seen the reverse, too, where the Senate sends their legislation to the House and the House decides to amend or do their own. That's when we get members from both sides meeting for "conciliation" to merge the two differing pieces of legislation. I think the years of dysfunction leaves us minus the concept of the way Congress used to work and worked well.

This is too little, and very much too late. The do nothing Congress has again done nothing to really help 99% of Americans. What a joke!

Well the House Republicans and the President have something in common again (unlike the lies they been telling about he's a socialist/marxist) and will get something done to help the economy grow even faster. 2012 is starting to become a very good year for the American Worker ladies and gentlemen from the right and left.

If this wasn't an election year how much support would it have gotten? The R crowd would likely have whined and complained and called names but in the 11th hour enough would have voted for it if any did. The Ds of course would be for jobs bills.

Everyone from the right and left have a great evening!!!! My final point about all the things that have been written and the hate spewing about the President being a socialist/marxist and things like that over the last eight months ad the key points as to why the Republicans hate him as President, then shows it's all just show. After he gets re-elected we might have a real strong" AMERICAN ECONOMY" because the Republicans can get off there high horse and can get some real work done. As Amy pointed out when Mr. Cantor said "the simplelist way forward is to listen to the President" is the most accurate statement that the Republicans have said and once he wins they will "HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS PRESIDENT" or lose there jobs two years later.

Really? The "Huge Republican Jobs Bill" does nothing but allow huge corporations to fund more startups? And Republicans are acting like they are the responsible ones and saviors of our American economy because of this one bill in over 3 years? Democrats, in the minority in the House Of Representatives, did vote for this bill, but labeled it as anemic.

Think about it......Does it improve one mile of infrastructure? Does it repair one bridge? Does it build a faster highway system that could put thousands back to work? Does it begin a faster rail system? Does it remove the requirement on the United Postal Service that Republicans shoved down our throats to make the non-government-funded post offices have to pay 75 years into the future of retirement benefits, but must get it done in less than 10 years? Noooooooo.

And as long as Republicans control the agenda of the House of Representatives, this is all we will probably see. Democrats called this bill "Jobs Lite". I always considered the statement after Obama was elected that Republicans Cantor and Boehner repeatedly announced when they gained the House "that government is not responsible to create jobs".

I guess Republicans think our infrastructure will be magically be improved by itself, or that they stand ready with millions of horses ready to rent when our roads become even more congested and unpassible. Ooh, but Republicans are sooooo godly and stately looking. I just drool over Cantor's youthful demeanor. Enough! Out with the buffoons in the fall elections..........

Let's see if Whore House Harry Reid tables this bill like he has to the other 26 bills passed in the House and sent to the Senate. Or will he knuckle under to his master's whistle and finally pass something.

Although Ol' Whorehouse isn't up for re-election this cycle, I expect him to lose his status as Senate Majority leader. Then he will become a non-entity like so many other Democrats.

Joseph - I truly hope Parent is your last name - because anyone who has to resort to the kindergarten name calling you just did truly shouldn't parent anyone. However, since you brought up "whoring' you might want to check on little Boehner. Who is he kissing up to these days? Or is he so confused he doesn't know whose boots he's supposed to lick?

The non-entieis after the upcoming election with be those associated with the GOP.

            Sanity,

I didn't give Ol whore house his moniker, he did.

He is from Searchlight, Nevada. An old mining community about 50 miles south of Vegas. This town used to cater to the prospectors, and had several brothels. Harry Reid claims he learned to swim in the swimming pool of a local whore house. Hence his nick name.

What took them so long to get any jobs bill through Congress? Oh! It's the "Do Nothing" Congress led by "Lame Duck" Boehner and Eric, the Confrontationalist" Cantor who have figured it out that jobs is what will get people's attention in November. The TEA-GOP-Republican party have introduced more abortion bills in the House and in legislatures across the nation in an effort to control the women of America. They have tried to legislate more religious laws into effect in every state house and in the nation's Capital. Their efforts to stifle gay marriage or relationships reeks of gestapo tactics. That has nothing to do with generating jobs in America nor is it any of their business. They have introduced legislation to allow more guns on the street while lowering taxes on the richest people in America. They call the"occupy Wall Street" names because they showed America the concentration of wealth in fewer and fewer people and power concentration in less generous, more controlling hands. Other efforts include numerous governmental investigations to slow down the ability of the government to function fluidly. Localities have resorted to additional fees for extra-curricular activities to pay for student education. The TEA-GOP-Republicans are so far out of touch, I'm wondering if American's are really paying attention.

To little to late for the Republicans. The American people figured out what a bunch of hippocrates you really are.Yoy can propose a thousand bills but it won't work.If I were a democrat in the senate I would do just what you did.Add a bunch of amendments to it that have nothing to do with the bill. Two can play that game.Besides that the economy is picking up even without your help.Someone said ,Healing is a matter of time, but it is sometimes a matter of opportunity. And you missed your opportunity.

This is a step in the right direction from the GOP for sure - but it is an election year after all! Now that they realize that the majority of their constituents are disgusted with their past behavior of filibuster and roadblocks, they are playing nice - and muzzling the TP politicians. But if we don't vote the TPers out, and those who signed the Norquist pledge out, when Obama is reelected, it'll be roadblock time again. The country cannot afford politicians who put part over country.
