Newt and Callista hit the dance floor

JACKSON, MS -- After a long day of events and travel following Super Tuesday, Newt and Callista Gingrich took to the dance floor here in Mississippi, showing off their personal side on their first night in the state.

When the traveling national press entered the lobby of the Hilton Hotel after midnight Wednesday, no one expected who would be sitting in the bar -- the former House Speaker (sitting sans jacket and tie) and his wife Callista, along with members of their staff and scattered Secret Service agents.

They were all enjoying drinks and the cover band after another 18-hour day. It was a rare moment on the campaign as the Gingriches let loose with staff and a handful of members of the media to the tunes of the Beach Boys’ “California Girl,” Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean,” and yes, even T-Pain’s “Apple Bottom Jeans.”

NBC's Alex Moe

Newt and Callista Gingrich cut loose in Jackson, MS.

Gingrich joked that his wife, who is very musically inclined, has much better dance moves than he does.

When Elton John’s “Rocket Man” came on, the Gingriches moved in front of the band while the rest of the group looked on -- and the Speaker turned Callista around the dance floor.

“We had a long day, we did a lot of things,” Mr. Gingrich told one reporter at the hotel bar. “My first interview is at 6:30 in the morning….You’ve got to take a few minutes off.”

Puhleese don't post the video!

Watching the latest Welfare Queen "Bust a Move" with "I'm a Barbie Girl" to "Dancing Queen" and "Fly me to the Moon" must have been a "Mad World" moment. What happens to Callista's hair when she let's her hair down - I suspect it "Falls to Pieces".

Had to leave for awhile and just read some more of First Thoughts.

Forrest Grump, I have to say that your comment on First Thoughts about Viagra and boob jobs had me laughing so loud that it's a good thing windows are still closed. It was top notch humor because not only was it funny, it pointed out the absurdity of where the focus should be instead of where it is. Well said!

Rob in ma, seriously, it is not me who has my head stuck in the sand. The thing is you have to look at both sides of the coin not just the side you like to see. There are many times when the media has frustrated me because they focus on silly nonsense such as why President Obama wore a suit when he went to the Gulf after the BP oil spill, he doesn't show enough emotion, he should show more anger, he's too professorial, etc etc etc. To claim the media never reports negatives about President Obama ignores the weeks the media spends picking apart everything he does and says. It isn't the media that is the problem for republican candidates right now, it's the candidates who provide the information, it's the candidates who have said or done the things being reported.

That percentage will drop as the voters are educated to the real reasons.

Gasomics 101: Drilling does not affect gas prices at the pump despite rhetoric.

Gas prices are not a function of how much oil is drilled in the US versus how much is drilled in the world. Oil prices are set on a global level.

Gas prices are the result of three factors: global price of a barrel of oil [which includes speculation], state and federal taxes, and gas supplies coming out of refineries (capacity / shut downs).

Production is up (9 year high) and demand is down (15 year low) so both should result in a price drop. The real problems come from the Middle East, refinery production (shut downs) and speculators.

        #1.49 - Thu Mar 8, 2012 3:35 PM EST

        Real reasons?

Production is up inspite of Obama -- when the voters are educated about that the number will go higher not lower.

And there are not too many republicans that propose increasing taxes on gas. Plenty of democrats though.

          #1.50 - Thu Mar 8, 2012 3:41 PM EST

Higher taxes only because the demand is so low there isn't enough State or Federal money to do the needed road and bridge repairs.

          Bob -

Since you apparently missed my question to you about "the hardworking national press" over on First Thoughts, I'll give you another shot -

I have an honest question here - for as long as I've been posting here, all I've ever heard is that Fox News Channel has a bigger audience and better ratings than all the so-called liberal media stations put together and that Rush Limbaugh and other conservative talk show hosts have more listeners in one day than Air America did in the whole six years it was on the air - which for all I know is actually true. So then how does the "liberal media" keep managing to control the message as you claim? I've never been able to figure this one out - can anyone else explain it?

Bob? Damage123? Rob in MA? Anyone???

joanne -- i am not a big fan of folks that cut and paste but i do feel this at least partially speaks to your question. It is a story from the 2009 Obama night out.

It is interesting, instructive, and a little disheartening to notice that the foreign press is much more shocked than the U.S. press is by the arrogance and expense of the Obama's "date night" that cost the taxpayers nearly one million dollars last week. The Australian and British press, for instance, scoffed at the absurd cost of the one night visit to New York that Obama "sacrificed" for but the U.S. press didn't seem to mind the waste of the taxpayers money nearly as much.

Let's start with the fawning U.S. press coverage. Us magazine, for instance, gave us the happy talk of "Obamas enjoy date night in NYC," in which we are told all about the happy patrons that got to dine in the same restaurant as the Obamas who were there just like reg'lar folks... except that all the other reg'lar folks had to be patted down like criminals by the Secret Service, of course -- not that Us really noticed that much.

The oh, so journalistically serious Chris Matthews also talked of the "date night" phenomenon. Did he scold the White House for the incredible waste of money? No, Matthews attacked the GOP for scoffing at the arrogant and wasteful spending. Now THERE is some serious journalism, eh? (Also covered by Geoff Dickens)

The Arts section of the L.A. Times scoffed at the "petty politics" of the complainers against Obama's arrogant use of priviledge. The New York Times gushed that the Obama's choice of restaurants "does, though, show taste." The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel called the waste of money "commendable." The Washington Post celebrated the fact that the president was a "foodie." Huffintgon Post gushed over the visit with a slideshow of AP photos.

I won't bother with the unhinged at the lefty blogs, but here was an interesting one: Indulging their inner environmental hypocrite, a website called thedailygreen.com, a site that claims to be interested in the environment, didn't seem to worry much about all the jet flights and global warming contributions that "date night" caused. Thedailygreen said that "nobody minds" the expense and was all excited about people meeting the "celebrity" president despite all the purported environmental destruction his visit caused.

Amusingly, the AP posted a story that sported a headline about how Republicans were slamming the Obamas' "date night," but it spent 10 of the 12 paragraphs talking about what the Obamas did and how they enjoyed themselves instead of discussing the GOP's complaints. Similarly, U.S. News was grumbling that the GOP had the nerve to grumble about the expense.

Of course, there were some voices raising concern about the over-the-top night out. Believe it or not, the Perky One, Katie Couric, advised the president that such an extravagant date was not the best idea in these hard times. On her blog, Couric said that the tough economy, "might be a good reason to keep that next date...a little closer to home. "

So, what did the foreign press make of the Obama's extravagant "date night"? They seemed a tad less celebratory over the whole affair.

A headline in The Australian (republishing a Times story) scoffs that "Taxpayers foot bill for Barack and Michelle Obama's cosy date." The Mirror in England was shocked over "Michelle Obama's $1m date in New York." The Telegraph talked of the criticism of the night out. The Times Online pointed out that Obama snubbed diplomats from the Czech Republic to take Michelle on his little date night. The Independent also had a nice jab at the Obamas for their presumption. And the Mail sniped at the president over the price tag, too. "How Obamas' romantic £120 trip to Broadway racked up a £45,000 bill," its headline pointedly remarked.

Even the Obama loving BBC noted in the second sentence that some were criticizing the Obamas for the "insensitive and wasteful" spending which puts the criticism much higher in the story than any of the American press where it usually appeared at the tail of the story if at all. AFP followed the BBC model by putting the Republican complaint in the top half of its story, unlike the U.S. media for the most part did.

So, it appears that foreign press was much harder on the Obamas extravagance than the U.S. press was in many cases. Sadly, it is telling that the U.S. press seemed to so easily let the Obamas slide for their arrogance.

Group Sues Michelle Obama Over Vacation Records

First lady Michelle Obama is being sued by the group, “Judicial Watch.” The conservative group is demanding access to all records related to an August 2010 vacation taken by Mrs. Obama and her daughters, Sasha and Malia. The group filed suit in the United States District Court to get access to all records on cost estimates and passenger manifests.

While I appreciate you're admitting that your post was a cut and paste, you should have given credit to the author. That's okay, though, I googled it and found:

Up to Date Bio of Warner Todd Huston:

Additionally, he has been a frequent guest on talk-radio and TV programs to discuss his opinion editorials.

So thanks all the same, but that's not exactly the unbiased information I was looking for. My question still stands.

PBS, MSNBC, NBC, CBS and ABC , and CNN are all very biased to the left, no question about it.

MSNBC is close to a pure propaganda outlet for Obama.

The vast majority of mainstream media reporters are liberals, who look down on conservatives as ignorant yahoos.

Don't care if the hubby has a D or R after his name, or what his position in government is - eventually you come home and you have the job of husband to take care of. That means I (wife) want to be romanced (i.e. date night). You want some late night fun, I want some romance first!

As for the dancing, you know what, when you gotta dance, you gotta dance!

Since he isn't doing it in front of the national media, who cares. Newt has coverage because he decided to whoop it up with the media on his trail. Get the difference? Probably not .. from what we have seen this week, discernment is not a RWNJ strength.

Study – Fox News Viewers Most Misinformed

              http://www.newsy.com/videos/study-fox-news-viewers-most-misinformed/

Surveys have found that Fox News viewers have more misconceptions than those who get their news from other media outlets.[3]

              http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Fox_News

FOX NOISE uses the bible as a reference.

"the Memo is the Bible", LOL

"The roots of Fox News Channel's day-to-day on-air bias are actual and direct. They come in the form of an executive memo distributed electronically each morning, addressing what stories will be covered and, often, suggesting how they should be covered. To the newsroom personnel responsible for the channel's daytime programming, The Memo is the bible. If, on any given day, you notice that the Fox anchors seem to be trying to drive a particular point home, you can bet The Memo is behind it."[4]

James1937467: "my point was not left or right but i thought interesting from the international perspective where we had all been led to believe that the President is so well-loved."

And James, my point was that the article you cite as being "international perspective" is actually an opinion editorial written from the "perspective" of an acknowledged far-right-wing commentator who cherry-picked the articles he wanted to quote from. Hey, why not? Both sides do it every day. But for a real picture of the "international perspective" of the President, maybe we should try looking at the actual people in the huge crowds who come out to see him when he travels abroad. If anything, they seem to love him even more than we do. And by the way, you can only be "led to believe" if you choose to be led.

Bob in Va: "Fox News is the highest rated , precisely because viewers realize it isnt state run media..."

Thanks for responding, Bob - but that just brings me back to my original question - if Fox is so highly rated and its viewers are so cognizant, then why do they feel so threatened by the liberal media? I still find it something of a paradox.

phinephancy: "I think everybody needs to dance a little"

I find it appallling that two election cycles in a row have featured serious, though decidedly secondary candidates who, when faced with adversity, abandonded their most important relationships. These are not the type of people who should be leading the country of the world.

Newt must have had mixed feelings about Elton John's "Rocket Man". On the one hand, an homage to his planned moon base. On the other hand, sung by someone who is happily married to someone of the same sex.

[Obama's strategy to keep them going up.]

                          Press Conference

Ed Henry: "Your critics will say on Capitol Hill that you want gas prices to go higher, because you havesaid before that will wean the American people off fossil fuels onto renewable fuels. How do you respond to that?"

President Obama: “Ed, just from a political perspective, do you think that the President of the United States going into re-election wants gas prices to go higher? Is there anybody here who thinks that makes a lot of sense? Here’s the bottom line with respect to gas prices. I want gas prices lower because they hurt families.”

Production is up (9 year high) and demand is down (15 year low) so both should result in a price drop. The real problems come from the Middle East, refinery production (shut downs) and speculators.

Presidents and their families should not have to give up all their lives just to serve us. It costs a lot just to keep them safe and well worth it. The carpers should find some real problems--what about the budget in your own state -- cut a lot from education? Or did your state just pass a law that restricts access to the vote? Or did your state just pass another attack on women's health decisions? Priorities please.
