Lenexa, Kan. – Despite calls from his Super PAC's top contributor for Newt Gingrich to drop out of the presidential race, Rick Santorum insists that he isn't pushing for the former Speaker's exit.
"People should stay in the race as long as they feel they should stay in the race," Santorum said. "And you know, I'm going to stay in the race because we're doing really well."
Speaking to reporters after a campaign event outside Kansas City, Santorum quipped that he would relish the departure of either Mitt Romney or Gingrich – who won only his home state of Georgia in last night's primaries.
"I'm not saying I don't want (Gingrich) to get out," he said. "If he wants to get out, I'm all for him getting out. I'm all for Mitt Romney getting out, I'm for everybody getting out, I wish President Obama would just hand me the thing, but that's not going to happen."
The former Pennsylvania senator added that if members of his staff have telegraphed a direct call for Gingrich to drop out, "it's certainly not coming from me and I don't support it."
Despite his limited primary victories, Gingrich has cut into Santorum's conservative support, preventing him from key wins over Romney in close-fought states like Ohio and Michigan.
During remarks to about 150 supporters, Santorum conceded that Romney's Super Tuesday performance gave the former Massachusetts governor a boost.
"We had a good night last night, but so did Gov. Romney. That's why we have to start anew," Santorum said, adding that he must win the Kansas caucuses on Saturday.
A Romney adviser told reporters earlier Wednesday that it would take "an act of God" for Romney to lose the GOP nomination at this point.
That's a challenge Santorum wouldn't mind taking.
"If the governor thinks he's now ordained by God to win, then let's just have it out," Santorum said.

Someone needs to ask him to drop out!
The only thing that should come to Newts mind about "running" is on a treadmill!
Buwahahaha!
Santorum knows Romney won't have the delegates needed to own the convention regardless of Gingrich and his ego. In the meantime, what can he do about the Adelsons funding Gingrich to ensure that Santorum doesn't become the real front-runner?
Brought to you by Citizen's United.
MSNBC, really size 80 font???
Exactly - Even with Ron Paul delegates, Romney is probably short. I looked at this, though, with both Gingrich and Santorum in the race, Romney gets 100 - 200 more delegates than if one of them drops.
Both Romney and Gingrich's only path to the presidency is a brokered convention. Santorum has a path if Gingrich drops right now, but He would have to get something like 3 delegates to every two of Romney gets.
Because Gingrich is a burrhead - he cost Santorum victories in Vermont, Ohio, and Utah and larger margins in Tennesse, Oaklahoma, North Dakota, and Georgia - . Previously Gingrich cost Santorum both Washington and Michigan.
Gingrich is the one that needs to go so Santorum can unseat Romney. And if Santorum can unseat Romney, Obama is about the same as Romney.
Karen: I'm just guessing but I'd bet it's a posting screw up. Good help is hard to find these days.
Hate to say it, but Santorum could use a vasectomy. He's already got enough of really homely offspring.
Mozzie - I don't think it is so much as genetically ugly - they all just look so incredibly awkward, socially inept and extremely unhappy. I would say it's because of the home schooling, but we can't ignore that they have a father that actually made them cuddle and kiss a dead fetus. If Norman Bates was your father, wouldn't you appear homely, too?
It's not like Bristol Palin - the apple not falling far from the unintelligent, hypocritical tree and deserving of everything that is thrown at her. Santorum's kids just look emotionally damaged and pitiful.
They'd never be able to handle the social structure of the White House. Fortunately, they won't have to.
Mozzie - I agree it will never happen - but could you imagine displaying this family to the rest of the world as an example of the American Dream?? Instead we would teach the world how demented people raise demented children.
It's the Adams Family without the humor. Pathetic.
Folks....Let's please leave the candidates' children (unless they have a campaign role) out of the hostilities. Imagine how you might feel if your kids were subjected to some of the comments here.
I wholly agree that remarks about children, anybody's children is contemptable. There are plenty enough things to ridicule among adults and adult behavior. Leave the children alone-the only ones that might have an active campaign role are those who are already legal adults. And even then, would you want your own child to be campaigning for somebody other than their own parent. I have seen enough people in these threads defending Mrs. Obama, so I think that what is good for the goose should be good for the gander. The candidates are fair game, as are their hired helpers and financial backers, but family should be left alone.
Sorry. I didn't know you were running this website.
If they all don't stay in it is bad for jobs...Comedy writing jobs that is.
The only real purpose Gingrich, Santorum, and Paul serve in this primary race is to bleed tens of millions of dollars from Romney's coffers. When this poop fight at the monkey house has subsided and Romney ultimately emerges as the "winner", his campaign will be much poorer and his image will be in tatters. What a way to face President Obama in the election race. Romney's campaign has fail written all over it.
And now you know why the republicans have invested so much in voter suppression.
Yeah... all the Republicans should drop out so we can suffer 4 more years under the neighborhood organizer's leadership, who by the way, has yet to get a clue about how to be president! Yes, that's the ticket! OMG!
Bill, Don't be so hard on Obama.... he's learning from his mistakes every day!
Take the GM Volt for example. Oops bad example, I think my kids could produce a better car than the Volt,a $4000 golf cart inflated to $40,000…..look for the Union/EPA label and the Central Planning Committee scores again, woohoo! Yes Obama is doing a fine job! We just have to give him 4 more years of on the job training!
Yeah, Sally:
You're probably right. Obama should have let GM fail - rather than allowing it to become AGAIN the largest automobile manufacturer in the world. Why keep around anything that guarantees hundreds of thousands of private jobs? But, don't worry, with Mitt in the game you've got a good chance to have a man who knows more about handing out pink slips and closing down companies than anybody in America. He'll be the takeover scavenger in chief. And nobody will get health care - cause the little guys don't deserve health care. And if they do get health care, there should at least be preexisting conditions so executives like Mitt can make multiple millions of dollars when they tell people with cancer and kidney failure that they don't qualify for treatment. And there should be big deductibles too - cause deductibles make health care companies more efficient. (Patients dying is much more efficient for the health care companies.) And there should not be any union jobs - because people in unions get health care and sometimes they even get pensions. And those are bad things. And why have the EPA? Nixon started it. But, the EPA gets in the way of things like off shore oil exploration - and we know that's not dangerous. Yeah, you rock Sally.
Sally, if you think golf carts cost $4000 it has been a long time since you bought one. Two years ago they were going new between $10 and $14 thousand depending if it was a two seater or a four seater and then you needed to purchase a waterproof cover if you want to stay dry in the winter. I think the super deluxe model with the hard doors was nearer to $20,000.
I opted for an electric one and loved it. My very old rebuilt golf cart by the time I bought a cover was more than your $4000 and this was over 5 years ago.
I am up north now, but I spent 8 years living on an island where each resident was allowed a golf cart but not a car as their main vehicle.
For a fact I know you don't have a clue what you are talking about. I would be suspect of where you got your numbers and not use that source again.
Americans First, you live on an island where each resident is allowed a golf cart....my how do the liberals suffer so.... lol
You must be a 1 percenter. I own a used golf cart that I paid $3000 for plus $25 a month to store it at our golf course. Semi retired, but use it to play golf when I can. Waiting for the hope and change we were promised so I can trade in my 9 year old ford for a newer model. The used golf cart will have to do.
Take your attitude and your $14,000 golf cart, grab some groceries and take them down to the homeless shelter.... to help feed the folks who got sucked under by Obama's policies and lost their homes and jobs. A $14,000 golf cart???? Good for you, lol!
Americans First: Are you talking about a Rolls Royce golf cart with a/c and a bar? I see them advertised all the time for under six grand.
Obama is a great President and will easily win reelectionbecause he deserves it. Only the far right wing nuts think otherwise.
Any of you Republican posters care to explain how neither Ricky-poo nor Newt were smart enough to get on the ballot in Virginia? They've both lived in Virginia extensively...
Do you really plan on voting for someone that is too stupid to realize that, when you are running for President, having your name on the ballot is helpful?
Oh...c'mon Bill Thomas! You seem so well informed and capable of independent thought! Can you tell me why you would vote for someone that is too dumb to get on the ballot? I'm sure Rush and Rove have neat little talking points that cover this. Read your daily memo and get back to me......
I hate to bust your bubble, but more conservatives lived on that island than liberals.
I loved the weather, but didn't have much in common with the people. It was good to move back to Washington where the people are real.
Not that I like Gingrich, but from the list I saw he has presently more delegates not by much than Santorum.
I got it, Santorum you need to give God a call and have him contact Gingrich directly. I am sure that would be no problem as you and a half a dozen other candidates were all chosen to run by God. So obviously you must have some means of communication.
Santorum currently has only 71 more delegates than Gingrich. Hardly enough to be calling for the guy to drop out of the race. Oh, that's right, Santorum isn't saying that, just EVERYONE ELSE around him.
NEWSFLASH Ricky,...Gingrich has more delegates than YOU.
The Lord wants you to drop out. It is a sign.
Isn't that how The Crusades started??
Santorum and Gingrich neither one will drop out. The republican party will see to that. As long as they can keep the conservative vote split between these two, Romney will the nominee.
What a circus going on! Keep it up, the popcorn is good, wine is great, and it is a comedy show. And yes, most of them claimed that God to them to run. Maybe God is playing a joke on the nutbags because of the way they have demeaned everyone.
He doesn't ask Gingrich to drop out. Really, he means it. LOL
God must be on Gingrich s side-----Poor Rick has lost the Catholic vote in every single primary.
Seems to me that Ricky-poo has some issues when it comes to controlling his financial backers and his employees. Begging Newt to drop out...asprin between the knees... Really -who's actually running this revival???
I hope newt wins. He will disembowl the other guy in a debate
Given the list of people God has told to run for the Republican nomination, God must be a Democrat.
You are not asking but you wish he would!!
THis GOP is just a sad movie playing. After all the trash they dumped on Obama, these are the best they can do??? The truth is even the GOP voters are disappointed because deep in their heart they KNOW that OBAMA is still the best. No matter what they say in the open, they KNOW that the GOP candidates are just not fit to lead this country.
Please, bring Sarah Palin on the panel to complete the circus.
