Subscribe to RSSSTEUBENVILLE, OH -- Rick Santorum's campaign is calling on conservatives to pressure Newt Gingrich to abandon his bid for the White House, a senior adviser told reporters tonight.
Senior campaign strategist John Brabender said the key for the campaign going forward will be creating an opportunity to challenge Mitt Romney one-on-one, though Brabender maintained the Santorum campaign would not directly call on Gingrich to drop out of the race.

"We're never going to call on anybody to get out, but what we are calling is on Tea Party supporters and conservatives is to rally behind the only candidate that has demonstrated over and over again that he's the one who can compete against Mitt Romney," Brabender said.
"The real key right now is, can we get an opportunity to get a one-on-one shot with Mitt Romney," he said. "What we found is, Gingrich did a nice job in his home state, but I don't even think he had a second place anywhere else ... It's time for conservatives to say 'Look, we're going to rally behind one candidate, Rick Santorum."
Speaking to reporters in the high school gym where Santorum spoke just moments earlier, Brabender declared that no matter what the final result in Ohio, it already has been a bad night for Mitt Romney's campaign.
"All I know is after spending nearly $10 million here in Ohio, right now its neck and neck and it's going to be close to a tie, and somebody will win, but not by much. I don't know how they declare that anything but a disappointment," he said.

I am a Rick Santorum supporter. I am for a stong president when it comes to national Defense. I am for people getting to keep more of their own money. I do not believe that what you make is the Governments money first and then you keep what they don't need. I believe that when the democrats talk about paying your fair share of taxes to the Government, they have to be living in another world. When one person has to pay more than three million dollars a year in federal income taxes to be legal in this country that is a shame. I also believe that Pres. Obama paid too much in Federal taxes at $400,000 plus in 2010 ( doesn't that make him part of the 1% that the Occupy dicks hate) oh I digress, back to my point. This President we have now has done absolutely nothing to Help our economy.. He has spent more than anyone in the White House. He and his Socialist, Left leaning depend on Government from Cradle to Grave have got to go. Enough of this social experiment. This is like not keeping score at the kids games or voting for the not so pretty in a kids beauty contest so as not to hurt their feelings. Its alright . Both Santorum and Gingrich are finished. Mathematically it is hard to argue that they can garner enough delegates to win the nomination. Based on current delegate counts, of the remaining 1550 delegates available, they would need 62% and 67% respectively. By contrast, Romney only needs 47% of the remaining delegates to reach the 1144 number.

The flaw in that analogy is either of those candidates, Hillary of Obama were acceptable to the vast majority of Democrats and regardless of which one won the rank and file would support them in the general election. Today -- some Republicans hate Romney almost as much as they hate Obama. The bottom line is Romney will be the Republican nominee and President Obama will win in November. Not only have the Republicans ripped each other apart, they managed to drive everyone out of their party other than old, white haired, southern white guys.

It seems to me that while Santorum may pull off a miracle and win his party's nomination, he has zero chance of winning in November. He has dragged out all sorts of social-issue baggage that will backfire on him. Also in that zero category...Gingrich. Less than zero...Dr. Paul.
Except for "defeating Obama," not one of the serious candidates have said much of anything about what they would do to fix anything. No plan. No vision. (Ok, Paul has said repeatedly what he'd do, and his platform has scared away all but the die-hard Paul-cult followers.)

At this point, unless you think there's going to be some bizarro-world where Rick Santorum wins California, D.C., New Jersey, and New York, Mitt Romney wins the GOP nomination. And that's piled on the very remote chance Santorum somehow manages to win Utah or Illinois.
The fact is Romney has enough delegates already, and almost assured support in these States that he can just about coast to victory with the likely 180 delegates he'll get from GOP leadership to get past the 1144 mark.
Santorum might eek out wins in Alabama, Mississippi, Kansas, and maybe even Montana. But statistically he's got a snowballs chance in h311 of winning the actual nomination.
GOP voters, get used to the idea of Romney. He's going to be your man.
And that's not a bad thing given most of the rest of the field.
Romney is not divisive and repulsive the way Santorum or Gingrich would be to independents, and even to the libertarian wing of your party. Sure they might excite a certain element of your base, but so did Christine O'Donnell in 2010 and you saw how that worked out, even in the midst of the almost unprecedented 'shellacking' the Democrats took in the midterms.
The nation is fairly polarized. And a lot of independents are utterly alienated by the increasingly authoritarian progressive movement. You saw that in 2010, not a ton has changed since then.
So don't sweat it even if you think Romney isn't your ideal. He's not anyone's ideal. But he's also probably got what it takes to hold the Republican big tent together without fragmenting and fracturing the party the way Rick Santorum or Newt Gingrich would. And Obama is a lot weaker by the numbers than a lot of the media is ready to let on.

Newt is lapping up the attention right now like he would lap up a bowl of grits.
No way Newt Gingrich would ever drop out- the primary season is now finally moving to Newt's favorable turf. The South had been almost left out entirely of the early primaries, but Gingrich won the biggest prize of the night on Super Tuesday in Georgia. The next couple states are Alabama and Mississippi, where Gingrich also has a good position. Then other Southern states after that. Newt has every reason to stay in and keep fighting, now that the primary calendar no longer hands such a ridiculous advantage to Mitt Romney. The results and momentum change quickly in this race, and Newt may actually be quite favorably poised from here on.
