Hoyer: Limbaugh's attack 'vicious,' 'indefensible'

House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) had some strong words for Rush Limbaugh today, whose comments attacking Sandra Fluke last week have garnered widespread criticism from both Democrats and Republicans.

"Rush Limbaugh's attack on Sandra Fluke was beyond the pale, indefensible, vicious, and intimidating to others who might want to, in a very honest fashion, testify before the Congress of the United States," Hoyer told reporters in a pen and pad briefing on Tuesday.

Limbaugh called Fluke a "slut" and a "prostitute" during his radio show last week after she testified in front of a Democratic steering committee about the need for increased insurance coverage of contraceptives. Limbaugh came back the next day asking that Fluke repay taxpayers who are paying for her contraceptives with a sex tape.

The comments resulted in at least nine companies pulling their advertisements from Limbaugh's radio show, and prompted the controversial conservative talk show host to release a paper apology over the weekend, and then apologize live on his show on Monday.

Hoyer said his frustration with Limbaugh goes beyond the issue of contraceptives.  In my view, forget about the issue itself, this was an absolutely outrageous treatment of a young woman who had the opportunity to come before members of Congress and give her opinion of importance to women's health," Hoyer said.

"But I will tell you, I have three daughters, and if he had treated one of my daughters that way I would have been even more outraged than I am for Sandra Fluke," Hoyer continued, "To treat people in a way that is so outrageous."

Limbaugh is an ass, we get it. Let's not continue to give this guy in more attention by submitting your own testimonial of his comments. Stop begging for table scraps and attention.

F that. This guy has been spreading hatred since the eighties. It is about time he pay some sort of price for the lies and venom he spreads.

Besides, he is the intellectual leader of the Republican Party. As George Will pointed out the Republican candidates love the idea of starting a war with Iran but tremble in fear at Rush Limbaugh's feet. Those on the left and in the center should absolutely point out the bigoted, hate filled nature of Rush and, by extension, the entire Republican Party.

What we need to do is give him the bad press he deserves until he loses all of his sponsors, and no Sponsor will dream of picking him up. We need to continue to give him the bad press he deserves until all GOP candidates out there repudiate without reservation his uncivilized, inexcusable behavior. We need to keep this up until he and all like him are shoved off the air for once and for all

Remember when Michael Steele apologised to Rush Limbaugh in 2009? And now the Republican spin on Rush is he's "just" an entertainer. An entertainer who got an apology from the head of the RNC for calling him an entertainer.

Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele says he has reached out to Rush Limbaugh to tell him he meant no offense when he referred to the popular conservative radio host as an "entertainer" whose show can be "incendiary."

"My intent was not to go after Rush – I have enormous respect for Rush Limbaugh," Steele said in a telephone interview. "I was maybe a little bit inarticulate. … There was no attempt on my part to diminish his voice or his leadership."

Amy - Ouch. Yeah, not surprising. He wasn't the only Republican to have to belly-crawl up to Rush and beg forgiveness either. Some pundits use the term, "hang time" to reference the amount of time between when a Republican says something less than glowing about Rush and when said Republican begins groveling for forgiveness.

Are there any females on this board that can explain to me Rush Limbaugh's sex appeal? The guy has been married four times but he has the personality of an alligator and the body of a manatee. I can't think of any reason so many women keep falling for the guy.

Limbaugh engaged in character assassination against a young woman who stated a reasonable and thoughtful opinion and he did so purely for the entertainment of his shameless listeners. This is despicable. Limbaugh's reprehensible actions need to be addressed publicly just as he uses his bully pulpit to strike at people by calling them names and using lies against them.

This isn't over.

If you heard his apology, it makes him about the same as a hooker that fakes an orgasm so the customer can pretend to feel manly.

My crazy (but fun) uncle used to say, "You don't pay a hooker to come, you pay them to leave."

Let us hope Limbaugh has to waddle off the stage and retire. He has all the money he could ever need and, oddly enough given how many times he has been married and his hatred of birth control, no children. The only thing keeping him behind a mic is his hatred of those who don't kowtow to him.

Does anyone else find it odd that Mitt Romney isn't getting questioned a bit more about Limbaugh?

Limbaugh's show is syndicated by Clear Channel. Clear Channel is owned by... Bain Capital. Mitt Romney gets tens of millions a year from Bain Capital, some of which can be traced back to the hateful things Limbaugh spouts. Even though Romney wasn't in charge of Bain Capital when it bought Clear Channel he still profits from it.

Shouldn't someone ask Romney how he feels about profiting off hate speech?

Sailcat,

I don't think carrying this story on benefits anyone. The only bully pulpit Limbaugh has is the attention he is given. To take away the spotlight is to take away his influence and the sooner Limbaugh is deliberately ignored the better. If his audience chooses to pay attention to him that is their problem. Endless public outrage just makes him stronger.

I disagree Mark. Limbaugh needs to go. We need to speak out against people like this. He is not an "entertainer." What "entertainer" works as hard as he can to offend as many people as he can? I bet Rush never though he would lose his job to a student, but I think that is what is going to happen. He will probably resurface with another set of sponsors, but I don't think he will make the kind of money he has been again. I also think that republican politicians have some explaining to do as to why they supported this "entertainer" so long. Like it or not this man has been the spokesman for the republican party for a long time and their politicians have long bowed before him rather than standing on their own principles.

nisl,

I get it that Limbaugh needs to recognize what he's done, live up to it by either resigning, quiting or what have you. My point in the first post (minus the grammatical error) was referring to the point of exhaustion. These reporters exhaust these stories to the point of absurdity. We've seen this same article 12 times since the story came out, each story containing a new testimonial from some politician boasting about the wrong doings of Limbaugh. It's just tiresome seeing people begging for attention, this shouldn't be what this situation is about.

It's about women fighting for the right of contraception coverage against all odds of the men who control the laws. This lady was fighting for her right when Limbaugh opened his mouth...again...and against his better judgement, encouraged many more women to stand along side her and continue supporting her cause.

My point being, Hoyer is just another voice, in just another article, saying the same damn thing we've already read a dozen times.

Sorry if i offended anyone, I hate Limbaugh and his venom just as much as the rest, but i'm sick of hearing his name.

rotthemechanics - I get where you are coming from, but what you want in the short term (no more discussion of Limbaugh) would make what you want in the long term (no more Limbaugh) much less likely.

If we let it slide we are, in effect, letting Limbaugh continue to spread hatred and lies without recourse. He might calm down for a day or two, but then he would be right back at it. The only way anything useful will come out of this is if the media keeps a spotlight on it until Limbaugh is gone.

I'd guess many of us have had our older, more feeble-minded relatives quote Rush Limbaugh at us. It is infuriating to see anyone you love quoting a hate filled halfwit like Rush. "How," you wonder, "can anyone be dumb enough to believe a thing Rush Limbaugh says?" The how is simple: Because the media never holds him responsible.

That is why we should all want this issue to stay front and center.

Here are the Fluke Facts for the Low Information Fox Noise or Limbaugh Listener:

1) Fluke is a STUDENT, not a professional activist.

Schools require their students to participate in social issue programs and extra-currcular activities. The right has NO IDEA what the current school experience is like, unsurprisingly.

2) Fluke was talking about OTHER students, NOT HERSELF.

3) Fluke was talking about health issues that contraceptive care treats, like Ovarian Cysts, not SEX.

4) Fluke NEVER ASKED FOR YOUR OR THE GOVERNMENT'S MONEY. Students pay for their own insurance through the school.

5) Fluke is asking that the health insurance SHE BUYS THROUGH THE SCHOOL to cover contraceptive care. The School cannot impose its values on their students health.

The LIE that Fluke is asking for anyone to pay for her contraceptives for her own sex life is FALSE.

3) Fluke was talking about health issues that contraceptive care treats, like Ovarian Cysts, not SEX.

Funny that even she admitted coverage was provided in these cases. She just needed something a little more sensational - and twisted it anyway, huh?

4) Fluke NEVER ASKED FOR YOUR OR THE GOVERNMENT'S MONEY. Students pay for their own insurance through the school.

True ... she demands that government mandate it so everyone has to pay for her bs bc.

5) Fluke is asking that the health insurance SHE BUYS THROUGH THE SCHOOL to cover contraceptive care. The School cannot impose its values on their students health.

The school is not imposing its values on her. If she doesn't like their coverage - she can get her own.

Sheez ... she is a future 1%er receiving a free $50,000 a year education and she demands that the school offer the particular insurance she wants?

The LIE that Fluke is asking for anyone to pay for her contraceptives for her own sex life is FALSE.

Calling Ms. Fluke the names this so-called radio entertainer did was beneath contempt. To me, what made that worse was asking for "sex videos" and comments about how she had time for classes with all the sex she was having.

Let me ask you fine, Rush supporters. Would you accept such comments about your daughter, sister, granddaughter? Would you shrug it off as just a guy trying to be funny?

The excuse "well, they started it" doesn't fly. Tried that once with my mother when my sister and I had a fight. I am grateful to still be here today after her response to that excuse!

"BS birth control"?

"A friend of mine, for example, has polycystic ovarian syndrome, and she has to take prescription birth control to stop cysts from growing on her ovaries. Her prescription is technically covered by Georgetown’s insurance because it’s not intended to prevent pregnancy."

Yea, her example was bullsh!t because it was covered by insurance.

    #2.11 - Tue Mar 6, 2012 5:42 PM EST

No bob, what Fluke was saying is that it should have been and coverage was denied which is why Fluke was testifying. I also was on hormone therapy (birth control) to prevent a hysterectomy- not pregnancy prevention, so I could go to work everyday and pay for my children to go to college. The insurance company covered my "BC" which save me and them an expensive and time consuming operation.

Each consumer of insurance should know what their policy does and does not cover before purchasing it. Asking an insurer to cover something for which it has not collected premiums is absurd. If the actuaries did not include the cost of contraceptives and the policy language indicated it was not covered, Ms. Fluke has no grounds to demand that contraceptives be covered.

She does have the right to change schools, change insurance, etc. She does not have the right to demand something that was not included in the costs and was disclosed as not being covered. After 30 years in the insurance industry, I would bet there would not have been a surprise about what was and was not covered.

I am pro-choice, pro-contraceptives and I have a hard time defending this edict. Because that is not the role of the President.

I think we need to give Rush more attention and tie him to the republican candidates who seem to think what he was saying was just fine.

Romney said he would not have used those words, not that Rush said anything wrong, just that Romney would not have used those two words.

Santorium said he was just an entertainer so therefore you couldn't hold Rush accountable for what he said.

Republicans want to forget that we all know that whatever comes out of Rush's mouth become the faux talking point of the day. It is the very same way that republicans want us to think that Grover Norquist is just some random person.

I think there are plenty of republicans that have been members of the Rush's church of hate for 20 years and it is now time to denounce him for all his hate to women. He didn't even bother to apology for calling women fem-a-natzies which he does all the time.

Apparently there are no republicans with real morals who love their wives and daughters that will stand up and condemn Rush. Only the democrats are brave enough for that.

Meanwhile, from the Republican Speaker of the House in Missouri:

"Advertisers may be fleeing his radio show, but conservative talk show host Rush Limbaugh is poised to be added to the Hall of Famous Missourians in the state Capitol.

House Speaker Steven Tilley said this week he decided to honor Limbaugh months ago, long before the most recent controversy. The Republican lawmaker and Limbaugh, who was born in Cape Girardeau, Mo., are both from the state's southeastern corner.

According to the Kansas City Star, Tilley said Monday that the ceremony will go on as planned and that he is "honored" to have chosen Limbaugh to be included in the hall alongside Missourians such as Harry Truman, Mark Twain, Walter Cronkite and George Washington Carver.

The paper said Limbaugh's bust is being made by Kansas City sculptor E. Spencer Schubert, who is also working on the bust of another Missourian being inducted into the hall this year — Dred Scott, the African-American slave who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom in 1857".

In related news, Dred Scott just called and said he'll pass, thanks just the same.....

Which would include you Bob, since you're here every day drinking the koolaid! ☺

Oh, and Rob - how could I forget Rob?

Only the mentally challenged continue to visit places that make them miserable... or they are closet masochists who get off on it!

      Which one are you Bob?

So Bob in Virginia. I recommend that you lead the charge on boycotting MSNBC. Bye. It was nice having you on First Read but now that you want to boycott MSNBC I suggest you take yourself and your comments over to FOX No News.

And if you are referring to Ed Shultz comments about Laura Ingram, he already apologized and Laura Ingram accepted. I think Laura Ingram should learn the meaning of accepting an apology. When you accept an apology, you don't rub it back into the person's face again 2 yrs later when you want to use it for effect. And Laura Ingram should be ashamed of herself. She condemns Ed Shultz's comments about her but then puts on her cheerleading outfit to stand behind Rush Limbaugh's disgusting insults. What a hypocrit.....

"Why, MSNBC has hosted commentators who have said worse about Republican women, havent they?"

Do you have specific examples of a prominent Liberal leader saying these types of things over an extended period of time? Not one "off the cuff" comment but a running comentary with explicit details and repeated slurs? I don't think so.

"Lunatic Limbaugh is a "Cognitively Disabled" sexual pervert with no moral values at all. This sexual pervert not just spewed total lies about an innocent private citizen. He wanted her to perform sexual acts on video so he could watch them. This is a total sicko, and must be taken off the air immediately. Calling your representatives is step one, and boycotting all corporations that still economically sponsor "Lunatic Limbaugh." Those politicians that do nothing to stop such behavior are actually for this type of sexually perverted behaviors. These politicians will politically be voted out in November. That is fact! Any corporation that is still supporting/sponsoring "Lunatic Limbaugh" must still agree with him. They need to be quickly boycotted on all levels. Any radio stations still carrying "Lunatic Limbaugh" will be turned off. If any corporation, radio station, and politician is stll doing nothing to crush this GOP/RNC "Animal." Then they truely still support his very perverted views, and see nothing wrong with them. Now that is really sick, mentally ill, and just very immoral. That is fact! A vote for the GOP/RNC is a clear vote for the ideological views of "Lunatic Limbaugh."

Butterball Limpbass's comments make a good argument for bringing back the tradition of dueling. I am not a good shot but I would have a real advantage since Rush is such a big target.

His double, triple down over three days begging for sex tapes is more than an inappropriate choice of words.

I would not expect a lady to have to defend her honor with smoking pistols, but some chivalrous fellow might volunter in the tradition of John Laurens who challenged General Lee to a duel to defend George Washington's honor

Hoyer took long enough but it is good that he said something. He said more than most from the GOP said about the horrible things Rush Limbaugh said. Personally I would like to see Limbach reprimanded with a heafty fine, suspension or even termination. I would have opted for the last but that's just me. I believe in integrity for a radio station and anyone who endangers that integrity should no longer be able to do that.

Am I detecting a pattern? A woman speaks up about her experience with Herman Cain and she is immediately labeled a gold digging slut by the GOP talking heads. A woman speaks out on her experience with Clarence Thomas and she is immediately labeled a lying slut by the GOP talking heads. A woman wants to speak about her experience with hormone regulation drugs, and she is immediately labeled a slutty whore asking to be paid for engaging in sexual activity.

Looks to me like there is a page in the GOP playbook that is not shared with the general public.

      Loyaltexan,

Yes there is a pattern that most women understand. The underbelly of sexism is to define women as either "virtuous wife/mother or temptress/whore.It portrays women as only sexual objects for men's fantasies.

Women understand and have seen this pattern for centuries.

What depresses me the most were the tepid remarks of the GOP Presidential candidates on this. One GOP strategist said on TV that "Romney did not need to pick a fight with Limbaugh."

GOP Senator Margaret Chase Smith stood up to Senator Joseph McCarthy. She must be turning in her grave.

As I remember it before DNA could define the father, all a man had to say was the woman (whore) slept with more than one man and therefore he and no-one else was not responsible for the illegitimate child. Married women had to quit their jobs if they were pregnant etc. Women were second class citizens. Poor women either had to have an illegal abortion or give their child away.

Now the conservative thought is -that having an unplanned child is more moral than chosing birth control or abortion. Why are there more babies than ever born out of marriage? This is the anti-choice movements fault.

JFK- Listen to yourself. There is no comparison between Schultz and Rush. Schultz was immediately suspended from his show for a week. He did not rant and rave for hours and days. He did not suggest Laura Ingraham broadcast her sexual encounters for perverted viewing on the internet. His apology was sincere, and he did not blame the conservatives for his remarks. His did not pick on a student. He did not blame the victim. See any difference? Probably not.

Your English lesson for the day:

      hyp·o·crite    [hip-uh-krit]

      noun
      1. a person who pretends to have virtues, moral or religious beliefs, principles, etc.,
that he or she does not actually possess, especially a person whose actions belie stated beliefs.

      2. a person who feigns some desirable or publicly approved attitude, especially one whose private life,
opinions, or statements belie his or her public statements.

An example of a hypocrite is a politician who excoriates homosexuals in the military while leading a secret gay lifestyle.

I don't see how a perhaps one-sided comment fits the definition of hypocrisy. Dictionarys are available on line. If your are not sure of a words meaning, you should avail yourself.

Yes, Limbaugh should be terminated, other TV and radio personalities have been fired for much less. But this one is a hero of the conservatives and a voice in the republican party, so it will be up to Ms. Fluke to sue the heck out of him as she intends to do. Remember they took him off of TV because of his big mouth and he went to radio. What is the FCC doing, twidling their thumbs or they are all republicans maybe and don't want to touch this hero. I didn't watch his TV show but he was always wheedling his way into the news and other programs and I never did listen to him on radio, thank goodness. What a piece of work this chickenhawk is, wants to go to war, using your sons and daughters, but he himself, when his country called, had a cyst on his buttocks and was 4F. I guess the cyst got bigger and ate his brain as well as enlarging that huge backside. Throw in drug overuse and his moral character and we have a real piece of work in this republican icon. Reminds me of Gingrich, another 4f draft dodging chickenhawk and between him and Lindbaugh have broken every commandment more than once. This character has to go, republican icon or not, he needs to be removed from all media and banned.

I do agree with those that want to keep this going, the more we keep it alive, the sooner, I hope, R.L is pulled off the air. He's an angry guy, can't even keep his marriage alive, let alone tell America who's acceptable or not to run it. The Rep. party should distance itself from him, especially if he's considered their "spokeperson"

America deserves better than angry people that can't work with the opposition and run it smoothly. A president presides over the whole country and not those they deem acceptable.

Why isn't there further distancing by every politician in every state legislature and all those in Washington from Brush Himoff?

It's more than 'Ol Brush Himoff's trouble that his incendiary comments have brought about, it's the radio stations, the network's who transmit his daily diatribe, the money men behind his motor-mouth, Bain Capital, Clear Channel and even the other Toxic Talking Heads defending this cigar chomping trash tongue. Look around the country and see who is blasting the president at every turn. Who is throwing flowers in Brushes path signalling his triumphant tattles? The Right-wing used to scream and holler at the liberal media, but do not look inward at their own biased curmudgeons.
On his radio show Monday, Limbaugh addressed the advertisers who dropped their spots from his program, telling his audience, "I'm sorry to see them go. They have profited handsomely from you. These advertisers who have split the scene have done very well from their access to you, my audience on this program."
This Braggart and self promoter is too full of himself and the networks who allow his diatribe should have had standards in place and delayed broadcasting to censor his blatant lying and brash commentary. The really sad part is the lack of distancing themselves by the right-winged politico's. As for Brush Himoff, I think he has had a great come-upance and has crashed back down to earth. This stoogie chompin' braggart has not pulled back at all in today's show but rather went down memory lane to fill the time. Normally he rants and raves about president Obama. Some subdued, but still Brush Himoff!

People have posted that democrats have never had to defend obama's character and they are right that democrats have never had to defend obama's character. They have all just jumped off the band wagon and realized how pathetic obama really is. I agree that Rush made some inappropriate remarks, but why in the world would anyone need so much contraceptives. I can only think of a few reasons...but I won't say them! Call it harsh, but Rush calls it as he sees it and there is nothing wrong with that.
