Updated 10:58 a.m. - TULSA, Okla. -- Aiming to snag a key win in Oklahoma's Super Tuesday contest, Rick Santorum on Sunday barnstormed in the conservative state, painting his chief rival as a moneyed but uninspiring politico whose rarefied air allows him "five home states" and possible tax breaks.
"You know, I don’t have my home state up on [Super] Tuesday like Congressman Gingrich or Governor Romney -- though Gov. Romney has about five home states," he quipped to laughter during a rally at Grace Church outside Tulsa. "I don’t know how that works, but I don’t live that kind of life. I have one home state."
(Santorum does own a home in a Super Tuesday state -- Virginia -- but he did not qualify for the ballot there. He was criticized during his 2006 re-election run for living with his family close to Washington, D.C., rather than residing permanently in Pennsylvania, the state he represented.)
Andrea Saul, a spokeswoman for the Romney campaign, said in response: "Sen. Santorum's base is Obama supporters. The last thing the White House wants is to have to face Mitt Romney in a general election, so Sen. Santorum is relying on them to throw the primary in his direction. Mitt Romney has won five contests in a row and won in every corner of the United States with Republican voters. It's going to take a businessman who is not a creature of Washington to change the status quo."
White House correspondent Chuck Todd breaks down new poll results on the upcoming Super Tuesday primaries.
Indirect digs at Romney's "kind of life" -- and his cash-laden donors --were sprinkled throughout Santorum's two-stop visit to Oklahoma.
"Guess what, rich people can move their money other places," he said in Tulsa, using presumptive frontrunner Gov. Mitt Romney as an example to illustrate a point of tax policy. "As we saw from someone who went out as I did and worked. My tax rate was about 27, 28 percent. Gov. Romney's was half that amount."
Santorum paid double Romney's tax rate in 2010, records show
"Gov. Romney has never won a state in this country where he was outspent," he told a crowd in Oklahoma City after referencing big dollar contributors to a major pro-Romney super PAC. "Think about that. Think about the fact that every state he has won he has outspent his opponent at least 4 to 1 or 5 to 1, and he's barely won."
"What does that tell you about his ability to motivate and rally the people of America for the big change we need coming into the general election?" he asked.
Mark Halperin, Savannah Guthrie, Kasim Reed and Mike Murphy offer insight and analysis on what to watch in the 2012 Republican presidential race.
The former Pennsylvania senator, who himself reaped a significant income from his tenure as a consultant after he left Capitol Hill, hopes that a common-man approach will boost him over Romney in key Southern states like Oklahoma and Tennessee.
"You go out and give us a win," he said Sunday. "And we will go on past Super Tuesday, we will go to Alabama and Mississippi and win there and this race will turn around and we will go on and be the nominee.

So what??
I have two home states. Indiana and Nevada. We are a mobile population. Not unusual to relocate for various reasons. A job, a job transfer, the weather, better schools.
This just adds to the Romney experience file. He is the one.
Obama?? He is one and done. Like a rock band that had only one hit. Obama is a one term wonder. (Wonder why anybody even voted for the fool.)
Yeah I would love a president who says one thing and says the exact opposite three hours later never staying consistant. I like that Santorum stays consistant, even though I do not agree with anything he says because he is hyper religious and he is bringing religion into government. Gaingrich just wants to offshore all our jobs to the moon. Ron Paul? He is an ok candidate with his radical ideas about the gold standard etc. I just think he is running for the wrong party.
Why not Obama? I know you disagree with me Joseph, but things are definetly looking up since 2007 for me atleast.
P.S. I expect this comment to be collapsed.
Someone in Indiana, when the factories are closing, moves to Nevada to get a job in the casinos. In neither place is there a chance at a good education (unless in Indiana you can play basketball).
The wealth manager buys the Indiana factory just when it is failing, on the cheap, closes it, sells it's assets at a profit, lays off the workers forcing them to move to Nevada, but makes a huge profit. Then buys the casino in Vegas and undercuts all wages there, again making a huge profit and selling it just before the economy turns south and the casino and hotel start losing money.
Yes, we are a mobile population, but some people know the profitability of mobility, and some people pay for it. NitMitt is no hero is anyone's world.
Joseph, being a 'nomad' doesn't 'add' to experience, just shows you flip flop all over the place since you can't find something concrete/permanent, kinda like his view points. (Wonder why anyone would vote for the Reich-wing)
@ joseph
"Wonder why anybody even voted for that fool." I will tell you why I voted for that fool, at first I was a McCain supporter. He had the experiance and he was a vet who knows how war are fought. But, as soon as he appointed Palin as his vice, that when all my faith and trust in him went down hill for chosing such a klutz as his second. Palin is confused all the time about everything she talks about. She doesn't think before she talks. Then I heard the chants: "Yes we can," and I switched over to the other side. As you can see I vote for candidate and not party. Give me someone who is better than Obama and uses facts to support how he or she will uplift our economy, create jobs, and prevent wars, and I will be happy vote for him or her over Obama.
Joseph if you legitimately believe Obama has no chance at reelection, then you should seriously consider going outside of your current circle of news and conversational influence, because you are dead wrong. I don't know how someone could think what you do if you have any clue about current polling, approval ratings, and the favorabilities of Obama, Santorum, and Romney.
Statistically speaking, with my personal views having nothing to do with anything, Obama has an extremely good chance of winning in November. Numbers say Santorum can't win a general election, and a conservative christian party isn't going to get behind a Mormon.
"Five home states," " ...two home states," not likely unless you have multiple personality disorder. One's home state or home town is where one was BORN. Otherwise, the residents of nice Belmont, MA would be stuck with Mitt as a hometown boy.
I have two home states - so I should be the one too!
Malinda - Generally, people consider their "home state" to be where they've spent the bulk of their adult life, particularly politicians. George W. Bush considered Texas to be his home state, though he was born in Connecticut; Reagan considered California his home state, though he was born in Iowa.
There's usually a differentiation between "home state' and "state of birth." For some people, they're the same, for others, not.
As delusional as your post is this is what will go down in November:
OBAMA 2012 / DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS 2012
*eats some more popcorn*
yep- and Romney's going to win every one of them!
Sounds like sour grapes to me...
If your income is measured in the tens of millions a year, your taxes will be lower under Flopney than if anybody else wins the Presidency.
But if you believe a healthy middle class is good for America, better to avoid Flopney like the plague.
I don't begrudge Mitt for having five or ten homes. I just think he and his children need to start paying taxes like the rest of us.
And no, I DON'T think a tax dodger and draft dodger should be President of the United States. Let Flopney remain investor-in-chief, so he can snap up all houses he wants banks to foreclose on so badly. Who cares if he ends up with a house in EVERY state.
How in the WORLD do you figure Romney doesn't pay taxes like the rest of us??? The taxes he paid last year were cap gains taxes- but before that came to be- he'd already paid income taxes on the money he made before it was invested. So really. he's paying a double tax on the same funds- not to mention all the state, property, and local taxes he pays. All in all- he pays somewhere in the 45-55% range.
How much do YOU pay in taxes?
Think before you play the class warfare card...
Someday I hope to make that much and have to woryy about such things- but until then, I will pay my 33% and be just fine.
Joseph - you're going to be one sad little person in November when President Obama wins - again. Oh, and people voted for him because in 2008 and now he is the best person running. He is intelligent, works for our country and doesn't spend his time kowtowing to the far right.
I'd be glad to share with you just why I voted for him. His opponent was a war monger with an empty suit for a running mate. Not a real difficult choice either.
While I don't see myself supporting Romney in the fall as I expect him to go far right on his VP pick...what the freak is Santorum talking about? If anything Romney having lived in a number of states and seeing their different needs is nothing but a positive for him.
Santorum is simply insane, what kind of person beings his dead fetus home to show the kids then sleeps with it?
Santorum did that.
http://abcnews.go.com/Health/rick-santorum-dead-baby-critics-lambasted-families-grieve/story?id=15306750#.T1XNAZjnvao
Creepy as hell.
Santorum doesn't have a home state, because no state wants to claim him. Romney has a couple, because they want his cash. Newt grew up in Pennsylvania, but claims Georgia as his home state, and actually lives in Virginia, but couldn't find enough signatures to qualify for the ballot. And Ron Paul, well, I suppose he will always be from Texas, and always will tell the truth about that, but he's just too senile to know if that Texas was before or after it joined the union, but in either case it was sometime before the last century.
Great crop, eh?
His Campaign is based in Pennsylvania.
And then he made PA pay for his kids' education, while living in VA. The people of PA disown him.
@DBAkron and his home (the primary residence of his family) is in Virginia though I'm pretty sure he claimed his PA residency to bill us for his kids' schooling and run for office based on a house he owned but rented out
Santorum keeps saying more and more stupid things. I think he is Sarah Palin with a penis. :)
You really think he has a penis?
Off topic, but interesting:
Draw your own conclusions as to what may have killed Breitbart.
May a voice of reason and truth replace him.
And Romney has a house, cleaning staff and 2 cadillacs in every single one of them...
Five home states matches his five different views on each issue.
john-537378
Let's be fair - Romney only has two views on every issue: pro and con.
did ricky take his idiot pills this morning? Oh - he doesn't need them - he's just inherently STOOOOPID. I never thought I'd see someone dumber than sarah FAILIN' - that's your ricky...
Santorum's displaying his ability to count to five puts him in danegerouly elitist territory. When his COllege Degree renunciation program takes hold I predict a HUGE uptick for him.
He doesn't have a home in one of the Super Tuesday states.... Right. He should have the sense to just keep his mouth shut. When he opens it, his brains fall out. Why didn't this nut get more coverage when he lied about a Scandanvian country that he claims has involuntary euthanasia. I think it was Norway. He made up this whole thing about how old people are afraid to go to the hospital. He made it all up. He's an incredible liar. They do have a law that allows a person to choose euthanasia rather than suffer. Rather than state the truth and say he has a problem with it he makes up this outarageous multi faceted lie. I agree he will be far easier to beat in a general election, but we can't take a chance that if the economy goes down the toilet he might get elected. He is a religious nut and delusional.
Go Romney. Then Obama.
Romney actually has a decent strategy for the electoral college. He has 5 home states all with decent delegate counts. If he wins all of his "home" states, that's a big step towards the winning number.
If it was just Republicans voting, he could pull it off, but with Democrats and independents, I don't think it'll be enough to win it, though.
I wonder if Obama is going to campaign in all 57 states again this time around? :)
Oh! 57 sates! Good one, David! With tired, pointless stuff like that to use against President Obama in lieu of actual issues, the GOP might as well give up.
Sheesh...
Better Romney or Ron Paul than the Misogynist brothers, Santorum and Blingrich. They will light their hair on fire to get votes!!!
Anti-woman, anti-education, anti-science. (oh but pro-war!!) Send the Misogynist brothers, Santorum and Gingrich a strong message on Tuesday!!
ooh, sounds like someone is hating on the rich! if only you were capable of being sincere, mr. santorum...
At least Romney isn't a (self-)tanning guru. Have you noticed the orange tint to Santorum lately???
Santorum is as phony as his phony tan, the incompetent boob!!!
Seems to me that the American People have wised up.
We see the "Ryan Plan" which robs American Senior Citizens of both Social Security and Medicare, we see Republicans constantly calling for the repeal of quality health care for all Americans, we see Grover
Nordquist waiting on the side lines for someone to come in and sign everything HE wants which is all contrary to what the American People need, and we see (and hear) Republicans tell us that, whether we like it or not, Republicans are going to stick the American Workers with the full cost of that Lie Called the War in Iraq while Republicans give the Rich a full, clear, and complete pass, while American Workers' wages remain stagnant.
There is NO logical reason for any ordinary American Citizen to vote for any Republican.
Obama / Biden 2012
Vote for the only Anti-war candidate left... Ron Paul, if you are tired of all the war we have been in for decades and the unintended consequences of war (9/11) vote Ron Paul. The rest of the GOP and Obama have already displayed they will never stop this death and destruction. The worst thing for the worlds economy is war. All the countries who are staying out of conflict are the ones who have thriving economies.
@Derek he's anti-war but he still wants the government to set up shop somewhere in my reproductive tract and the whole racist stuff really doesn't do it for me. I think I'll pass
All Santorum does is whine. He's even engaging in class warfare like you'd expect from the closet liberal he is. Complaining about Romney having strong ties to several states makes Ricky look ridiculous. He's just mad because NO state wants him to call them home.
Derek-908696
Ron Paul is for making heroin and prostitution legal but he is still against birth control. Ron Paul needs to get his priorities straight.
Derek, I hate to break this to you but there is a reason why Ron Paul is running as a Republican candidate.
Wow. a lot of serious misinformation out here let me clear a few things up...
@ SAICS
Ron Paul is exactly opposite, he wants the federal government to stay completely out of your body, this is a wedge issue you bring up and he feels each individual state should handle it the way they deem fit, at least this way you can always move to a different state if need be.
@bayllie
Ron Paul believes the federal government has no authority in making prostitution or "certain" drugs legal/illegal and again this is a states rights issue. Look at the 16 some odd states that have already passed medical marijuana laws and look at Nevada who does have legalized prostitution the sky is not falling and the states who have passed the MJ laws are seeing lots of positives except for the fact the Obama admin is not stopping the DEA from meddling. He wants states to make these decisions and keep our tax payer money away from the federal government.
Please educate yourself about this man Ron Paul, see why the media hates him yet shoves Rick Santorum, Newt Gingrich, and Mitt Romney down our throats before they will even acknowledge Ron Paul.
Also Paul is running as a republican because he has tried to run as a 3rd party candidate and the media has helped make the political system into a 2 party system so Ron has no choice but to initiate change through the GOP.
PAUL 2012!
Ron Paul is an isolationist, which is more dangerous to the US as anything else could possibly be. Like it or not, the US is now a world power; economically, militarily, and any other way. The world looks to the US, as a friend, adversary, or somewhere in between. Isolation would only harm us in a huge way.
Ron Paul is not going to effect any changes from within the GOP so he might as well become a third party candidate and speak to his true constituency without having to give a nod or wink to those who don't really want him in their own country club.
@Ernest Lee Frank
Paul is a non-interventionist not isolationist. Our current foreign policy is the more dangerous policy as we are essentially foreign invaders of other countries. It pains me to say this but China who's economy just trounces ours has it right, keep trading with other countries but stay out of the war business. I don't want my tax dollars to any longer be used to build up military around the world when our own border is jeopardized on a daily basis.
Peace for 2012, end these Wars, end the FED, Ron Paul 2012
Mitt Romney also has 5 relatives that endorsed Ron Paul today!
@Derek-908696 he introduced the "Sanctity of life Act" defining human life beginning at conception (federal level). Pushing the buck to let the states ban things based on the bible claiming that the protections of the constitution don't apply at the state level does not make Paul a man who doesn't stand for government intrusion in some places but not in others
Very wisely, objectively stated conclusion SAICS.Pleasure at will with some RRthugs
There Mr. FLIP FLOP goes again Only 5 home states ?
Mittens Rob-us-blind Flip Flop, the 1%'er actually 0.006% CORPERTE RAIDER and one time governor of Liberal Mass but now he is an arch conservative. Has supported Abortion, Gay Rights, Gun Control, Stem Cell Research and has reverse himself on all of these issues.
He took both sides on the financial bailout, the stimulus bill, the auto loan package;
His biggest Flip-Flop of all Health Care Reform The national Law is modeled on the one that he championed as governor in Mass that requires every citizen to have health insurance. Now he has Flipped-Flopped. Mr. Flop has taken a hard slide to the right pandering and boot licking to the tea party.
Mitt Flip-Flop Rob-us-blind, a wishy-washy, flip flopping spineless politician without any core convictions, principals or believes a man who will say or do anything to get elected telling one crowd one thing and another crowd another. You simply can’t trust this guy to tell you the truth.
The only good thing that would happen if Flip-Flop were to get elected It would prove that Conservatism is dead as Flip-Flop would stab the Conservatives in the back.
Mitt Flip Flop Romney LMAO
Derek,
If you think for a moment that Ron Paul is not going to blow with the Republican wind (if elected as president - which will never happen), then you are very naive. He smells like a Republican, he acts like a Republican, he talks like a Republican. Guess what? Ron Paul is a closet Republican.
I can't understand why it matters that Romney is rich... THEY ALL RIGHT. Democrats and Republicans. If You are in congress, or the president, or even on the Supreme court, I promise you have AT LEAST 1 million dollars in wealth (ie houses, cars, stocks, etc.)
This bothers me as much as when, Obama is criticized for going to Martha's Vineyard, or Harry Reid living in the penthouse of the ritz... NO DUH! They're rich, they all are.
Even if you are against politicians being rich, the fact they all are, should make it so that that fact makes no difference choosing amongst them...
Vein in my head throbbing...
It's not the "being rich" part, that bothers people, everyone knows he is rich. It's the way he GOT RICH, buying up companies, dismantling them and sending them out of AMERICA! It's the fact that he pays only 15% tax on his income, it's that he "pretends" to be just a regular guy, (photo's of him doing his laundry), etc....etc...
The main difference between Romney and most of the other candidates (and most certainly Obama) is that Romney was born into wealth, political power and privilege in exactly the same way that George W. Bush was.
The others were mostly born and raised in middle class families, and while they are wealthy now, they can understand the perspective of an average American regarding jobs, education, health care and financial issues.
Romney was --as Ann Richards, former Texas governor so eloquently described Dubbya-- "born with a silver foot in his mouth."
Romney has demonstrated over and over that he cannot put himself in the shoes of a middle class American. He is all about the one percenters.
Why should anyone be surprised about that?
Jesse Stout
Romney HIMSELF tries to convince everyone that he's just a regular, truck driving guy...He assumes that people are just to stupid to see the truth - he is doing this to himself.
kaybeetoys
It's gotta be killing the Republicans that Obama came from a single mom household helped by welfare checks. He worked and puthimself through Harvard. If they only prevented any type of welfare long time ago, they would not be dealing with Obama today.
This is why welfare is bad - it gives the opportunity to those who should never be in power in the first place. Power is reserved for white, rich guys only! Damn minorities and women wanting to have equal opportunities! - gotta put them back in their place.
kaybeetoys - By your reasoning anyone born into wealth is not capable of holding a political office without being biased towards the rich and powerful. So what happens if one of President Obama's girls grows up and decides they want to be the first woman president and enters politics. Those girls are rich and will never know anything about being needy. Would you dismiss them the same way you are dismissing Romney based solely on being born into wealth?
Skup
I didn't say that, Skup.
It is certainly not outside the realm of possibility that a person born into wealth and privilege could sympathize with the plight of the impoverished. There are many examples in history of wealthy people who have worked tirelessly for the poor and the downtrodden.
Romney just isn't one of them.
He proves that every time he opens his mouth.
As for Obama's daughters...don't forget that they are members of not one but two oppressed groups: females and minorities.
Many people have multipe "home states" I am in no way rich (husband is a $40,000 a year teacher and I am a stay at home mother) But we have 3 home states. California where I grew up, Utah where I spent 1/2 my married life and where my children were born, and Arkansas where we live and raise our children now. So what if Romney has roots in several places, Santorium wishes he had similar ties he could trade on. Sour grapes. IMO
Romney did not get rich in some questionable way. It is not like Bain Capital was buying healthy companies and dismantling them for the fun of it. They purchased companies that were in trouble, reorganized them if possible to save them from distruction and bring them back to profitability, or sold off assetts if it was not possible or prudent to "save them". Thousands of people had their jobs saved in this process. Thousands of jobs were created. Yes some lost their jobs, but if they were not "taken over by Bain" then they would have most likely lost them anyway.Where are the media reports with interviews with some of those people who had their jobs saved?.......Oh yes, no where.
Romney is now trying to pull in donations from regular people because almost all of his donations (essentially all of his donations) are from the super-rich. He needs desperately to counter that he does have support from regular people, but that's not what the numbers show and he can't hide from the truth, but will definitely try. The super-rich are the ones totally backing Romney and will spend their way to the nomination and through the general election.
The question everyone needs to be asking is why the really wealthy want him so badly. His tax plan is an obvious answer. If you're rich, you'll get massive tax breaks. If you're a regular person, you'll be paying a lot more under his plan. The math alone should be enough to convince every voter in America making less than half a million a year to vote against him, but the non-stop ads and distortions will somehow be convincing the people who will be impacted the most to still support him for reasons that just don't hold up in the face of reality or common sense.
I don't know what's worse. That a politician can essentially buy the election or that the electorate is so uninformed and easily swayed to be convinced to vote against their own best interests.
Michelle from the woods
Yes, Michelle, and that is what makes Mitt Romney a vulture investor. Romney was buying out companies that would make him more money after dismantled than as a whole company. And that's fine but why the claim that he is a job creator?????????????????
TO: bayllie who wrote:
Correct Bayllie, but they actually said was "Romney is a 'Jobs CREMATOR'" not "creator".
Romney would take over businesses like the Detroit Car Companies that President Obama bailed out, but what Romney would do is he'd take them because they had a whole lot of money in Employee Retirement Accounts, which Romney would keep for himself, lay off all the workers, and ship those jobs overseas, making millions on each one of those moves.
Now how does any of those things that Romney specializes in, that Romney made his millions doing, how do any of those things help today's average American Worker? Answer: It doesn't.
Would Romney stop shipping American Jobs Overseas? Answer: No, just the same as Bush never stopped drilling Oil (in Iraq).
Obama / Biden 2012
1."Mr. Romney, explain to everybody how placing your money into shelters overseas so you can get away with paying less then 14 percent in annual taxes is helping Americans?"
2."Mr. Romney, do you send the bulk of your money overseas because you value the trade of other countries over America's, or did you send your money over there so you didn't have to pay as much in taxes as everybody else does?"
3."Mr. Romney, you like to say that you pay what you owe in taxes and not a dollar more. What if the vast majority of America thinks you should pay a lot more? Do you agree with the majority of American people and pay more taxes or tell them you don't care and don't want their votes anyways?"
4. "Mr. Romney, do you think all Americans should pay less then 14 percent of their annual incomes to taxes, like you do, even though that would plunge this great nation into third-world status almost immediately?
5. "Mr. Romney only the rich could take advantage of loopholes you have used to insure you pay less in taxes then almost all Americans who pay taxes. Should that be how America's tax code works? Should rich people, like yourself, pay smaller percent of your income to taxes when people like our military, cops, social workers, firefighters have to pay a great deal more?
For me it doesn't matter whether they have money or not nor how they grew up except if they have character flaws that would get in the way. I care about who they have become through their life experience.
I fail to rag them out just because they have some different beliefs. What any of them promise MUST pass our House and our Senate. The President can't do a lot beyond what gets introduced as a bill and passes. To promise $2.50 gasoline is bull@!$%# when you have no real control over enough of the external factors.
It would be nice to one day have two home states and it is not an evil goal. Do well folks and be healthy.
Healthy companies aren't ripe targets for take over by companies like Bain. They take the weak ones and either make them profitable or sell the assetts off. If the company is already weak every employee is already at risk of losing their job. All this hate comes from the biased information that floats rampant around the media.
Yes, Bain does dismantle some companies for profit, but only because they are already too sick to recover. It is like making an organ donar out of a tragically brain dead patient. What would be the benifit of keeping that patient alive for, except to watch their body deteroriate over time? Instead the family gives the greatest gifts to others who have the chance for recovery. Yes some lose jobs, yes Bain makes money, but many companies have been saved (and therefore their employees jobs) to create profit another day. That is capitalism. God bless capitalism, it gives us all hope that good things can rise from the ashes!
I think the GOP nomination should be settled in an Elimination Chamber match.
Nice! I'm for it!
I can't stand politics! They sling mud at each other to get the nomination, then the same ones who did the mud slinging endorse the one they slung at after one gets the nomination. Phonies!
You sound jealous there Rick
good try, Rick. It isn't in the cards for you. The biggest reason for me: you are an angry, bitter, little man who has to tear down everyone else to make yourself feel bigger.
Gingrich? Yes, he is a angrier, more bitter, littler man who has to do the same.
I've vote Paul, Romney, & Obama over both of you.
I would consider Paul if he ran as an independent, otherwise its Obama for me.
Romney and Gingrich only want the Presidency for their own personal vanity and ambition. Santorum believes his own crap, but is about 2 inches away from also believing the world is flat. His hard right views would be disasterous for foreign policies and personal liberties. I wouldn't hire him to run anything, much less as my President.
Jack colton, I couldn't vote Paul under any circumstance but I agree with the rest of your post. I've read what the libertarias stand for, not what Paul attempts to say, and they are in favor of anarchy. Which is great if everyone living under self-rule were moral and kind and we all held degrees in structural engineering so we could rebuild our roads, bridges, etc when they are destroyed by nature - unfortunately we're not. We can't hold old-fashioned barn raisings when a infrastructure is destroyed. We need government to step in. Just like Paul had them step in in Texas when Ike hit.
I wonder if this guy has a clue how absurdly unelectable he would be in a general election.
Where did Santorum's money come from?? He didn't have any when he went to Congress. Congress doesn't pay all that well yet he's bringing up 5 kids and living in a million dollar house outside of DC and has another in Virginia. I don't think that he ever wrote a book or something that anyone would find worth reading, He hasn't been on the lecture circuit -- my God - he can't phase a sentence. Of course he saved a buck or two when, after he got elected a Senator for Pennsylvania, he got up and moved out of the State which is only one of the many reasons that he lost reelection by 18%. Did I hear that he hasn't had a "job" for the last 5 years but instead was running around playing one of those lobbyist guys? It is unbelievable that such a man, running for Pope, can stand up and criticise others -- stop throwing stones.
Santorum was a lawyer, and consultant is what you use when you work for yourself, to permit working for others firms/companies too.
Mr. Santorum earned $230,000 working for Fox News. Gingrich was also an employee of Fox.
Guess: Your source please, and $230,000 over 5 years, w/ five kids, doesn't buy a million dollar home.
DB: Santorum has a law degree but that doesn't mean he practiced law. I have a law degree too, that doesn't mean people just send me checks. BTW: I'm no kid, I have practiced law far longer than Santorum has been admitted. I practiced in Allegheny County, PA, where he was situate before his first Congressional campaign and never heard of him. Some one should show me something noteworthy (with a bit of authority) that Santorum has done. Read his quotes as they appear in the news -- he cannot even speak a coherent sentence -- I know for sure he wasn't a trial lawyer.
DB Akron - call it what it is - Santorum was a lobbyist for the wealthy corporations. That's how he made is money.
"Santorum earned $1.3 million in 2010 and the first half of 2011. The largest portion of his employment earnings — $332,000 — came from his work as a consultant for industry interest groups, including Consol Energy and American Continental Group. Santorum also earned $395,414 in corporate director's fees and stock options from Universal Health Services, and $217,385 in income from the Ethics and Public Policy Center think tank. In 2010 he was paid $23,000 by The Philadelphia Inquirer for his work as a freelance columnist."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rick_Santorum#Post-Senate_career
Santorum did practice law briefly in Pennsylvania, for four years in the 1980s. He left the law practice in 1990 after being elected to the House of Representatives. According to Wikipedia, as an associate, he successfully lobbied on behalf of the World Wrestling Federation to deregulate professional wrestling and make it exempt from federal anabolic steroid regulation because it was entertainment, not a sport.
Clotho: I think you made my point. The man is a lobbyist and has made a small fortune because of whom he came to know. Being on the board of Universal Healthcare (being on the board is another word for a highly paid lobbyist) is a no brainer -- do you really think he knows anything about healthcare -- I doubt that Universal Healthcare supports bringing Downs Syndrome babies into this world. Don't waste your ink telling how much he was paid -- tell me what he did. He lobbied for the WWF to get and exclusion for steroids -- WOW -- that's a biggie.
Outside of the bible thumpers, the clowns have insulted almost everyone else. Think they will be voting for a clown? Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
Clowns, will vote for a clown!!
Joan or sallyann, Are you going to rail on nancy pelosi worth 27 million or harry reid who made all their money off the taxpayer trough and inside info?? progressive pieces of snot you folks aare.
Gee jolly, not so jolly are you??
OBAMA 2012
jolly joker - wow! Somebody is cranky today!
Gov. Romney has never won a state in this country where he was outspent
Any political analyst will tell you that the candidate, that has the most money to spend, will usually be the winner. Politics in this country has come down to the almighty dollar. The biggest problem is who, is going to own these people, after they are elected.
tweet -- clearly this applied to the inexperienced junior senator from illinois who became the first candidate to refuse to participate in the public financing (but only after saying he would -- did he lie?) because it was too restrictive. as a result he spent nearly 3 times as much as mccain.
and now the white house has the audacity to oppose the bill in Congress that would eliminate public financing:
"The bill would force many candidates into an endless cycle of fundraising at the expense of engagement with voters on the issues, and would place a premium on access to large donor or special interest support, narrowing the field of otherwise worthy candidates," the statement said.
at least they are being honest with the assessment. the president has spent an inordinate amount of time raising money for his next election from folks willing to pay $35,000 for a dinner date with the President.
james - sounds like you're a little jealous President Obama has people who will pay $35,000 to have dinner with him. And, he would gladly sign a campaign finance reform bill if the Supreme Court hadn't paved the way for the GOP to buy offices.
I think all the Republican candidates are morons and I keep waiting for the party to self-destruct.
ejd. your a progessive piece of snot. Maybe go lick nancy pelosi boots! she made all her millions off of ripping off the public. Bunch of d ars jackwads.
jolly ,
Wow...incredible commentary. Can you manage an intelligent comment or just juvenile insults?
ejd - I think it already has. Look at the dismal group of idiots they're running!
Guess What - I think the answer would be "no."
Theres more to the decline of gop influence than candidates, the exigence of "Sarah 6 months"(paylin) verifying their loss of reality.Their appeal is now so limited to either small or radically opposed elements that they've become inconsequential politically, nationally and in many states where they had modicum influence.Obama,2012,double digit percentage.
well isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?
I guess Frothy thinks PA voters are the only ones who know how he bilked our state to pay for homeschooling while his family lived in VA full time
Actually I thought he had 2 states. He lived in Virginia while claiming to live in Pennsylvania. The citizens of PA paid for his children to go to school.
Sam - let's finish your last sentence... the citizens of PA paid for his children to go to school while LIVING in VA.
Let us hope our long national nightmare will end soon.
Yet you ALL cry foul when Obama tries to rectify that disparity!!!
These guys cannot open their mouths without spewing hypocrisy.
There is somethng gone fundamentally wrong with our once-great system when a cypher like Rick Santorum can remain in the national discussion for more than a minute. What does anybody think he brings to the table?
Yes, joan...nancy pelosi is worth 27 million ..All earned with congressional inside information. Romney is rich? HA HA . ..you progressive pieces of snot can't even see past your own noses.
That's great, Rick. Too bad yours is Washington D.C., where you've spent most of your adult life.
... and then we'll go on and get spectacularly crushed in the general election in November."
Well-being has not improved since the financial crisis began in 2008, reflecting the moribund U.S. economy. Most states have imposed austerity measures to combat budget shortfalls. Gallup notes that “reductions in public services, public-sector layoffs or salary cuts, and decreases in federal aid” have hindered improvements in well-being across the country.
this is the discription of what improvements where made in the some of the poorest states in the US. this is the effects of the change obama ran on. Looks to me nothing has been improved along with a long list of others
so who do you vote for a chicago politician who lacks private sector expierance
or a Rich guy that donated his inheritance to charity and than made all his money on his own in the private sector
I really don't understand why it is so bad to be rich now. If the US does not like Rich people Rich people will take their money someplace else. Regardless if your rich or not you still have to have talent romeny has provin Talent . Unfortunately in the game of politics which washington created having more money than the other guy will most likely win you more votes, your talent is maybe 50% of the package and if you don't like that zipp it your in the wrong game. Romney has a unique combonation money & talent he's not Al Capone so what is everyone worried about
plstop, no one is saying it's a crime to be rich or to feel hatred toward the wealthy. It's the fact that the wealthy politicians or those less wealthy politicians who are owned by corporations are blaming our countries problems on the poor. All their programs to "save America" fall on the backs of the working class people and give the huge breaks to the "job creators" who haven't created jobs in the US for decades. That is the problem. Being a business man does not equate to being a good president. One has nothing to do with the other - just look at Bush II's record.
And your comment about if the US doesn't like rich people, the rich will take their money elsewhere. Here's a news flash - they've been doing that since Reagan opened the flood gates to make it more profitable and easier for corporations to move overseas and support communist China than their own country. And every president after that has made it easier and easier.
plstop - actually Romney already has taken his money elsewhere. Yet he thinks we should elect him to be President - what an idiot!
Romney has about 5 home states but Santorum can only get on the ballot in about 1/3 of them. Leader of the free world? I doubt it.
We should be discussing what the impact of Mitt's policies will have on our portfolios.
Naturally there will be a huge surge in hiring in the first month of Romneys terms. An almost audible sigh of relief will be heard around the world when Obama is defeated.
Obama leaving office will be a big relief for America....like passing gas. LOL
OBAMA 2012 / DEMOCRATIC CONGRESS 2012
YEAH BABY!!!!
Joseph E. Parent - When President Obama leaves office in 2017 (January) my guess is Hillary will be President and by then President Obama - with the help of a Democratic House and Senate - will have brought millions of jobs to the US. He could have done that already, of course - if the GOP had not blocked every move he tried to make.
Sanity(?)
It is the libbie, Disneyland, mentality that you are displaying now that was so prevalent in the Democratic ranks just prior to the midterms.
After this election, it will be considered an insult to even be called a Democrat. (like being called an idiot)
It will be politically incorrect to even use the term. Maybe we'll just call it the "D" word. LOL
Obama shelved in 2012.
My b/f and I were discussing this last night. He's a Democrat, I have no party affiliation but I lean toward Republican. The complaint I brought up is that it seems like the White House is now something that can be bought with the right price. Voters no longer have the option of voting their candidate in the office. In order to run for office, you have to have a multimillion dollar "war chest" that is capable of outspending everyone else who's running. The Super PACS will spend unlimited amounts of money to get their negative campaigns on TV, radio and the printed page. I asked my b/f when the last time was that the voters actually voted someone into office and he said NEVER. He said the electoral college has been around since the advent of the Constitution. I don't think so.
Am I correct in assuming that the Presidency (and every other so called elected office in this country) can be bought with the right price? It sure seems like it.
The Geriatric Oligarchical Persons do not have a decent dog in the fight. It's like sending a chihuahua to race against a Greyhound. Until they start listening to the PEOPLE, the powers-that-be that run this country (the so called "shadow government" I've heard so much about) will pick who they want as President. Kinda like Putin.
a.
It's even worse this election cycle. In 2008, I think the most any individual could donate was $2,300. Now, one billionaire like Sheldon Adelson can give tens of millions to someone like Newt Gingrich and have the same influence as thousands of regular people. I heard that if every single person who voted for Obama in 2008 donated $350, Adelson could single-handedly match it in one Gingrich contribution.
The rich had way too much power and influence before, but now they completely own government.
Clotho - you're right. The Supreme Court ruled that our government could be bought!
I'm getting a little tired of these politicians stomping in CHURCHES, if churches want to invite these politicians then I think it's time to end the tax exempt status on them. They have no business in politics in this nation. Every time I read an article on Santorum, Romney they are always in churches I'm sick of it.
You are wrong about Romney. He doesn't stump in churches. Most of the churches that Santorum and Gingrich are speaking in are Evangelical in nature. By and large, Evangelicals preach anti-Mormonism as part of their doctrine and are supporting just about any candidate except for Mitt Romney because of his Mormon faith.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has a policy of policital neutrality. Members of the Mormon church are encouraged to participate in the public debate, but are encouraged to come to their own conclusions concerning politics. None of the leaders of the church provide direction when it comes to voting and the support of political candidates.
This is why you have a great disparity in thought - from Harry Reid, to Glenn Beck and everything else in between. I am LDS, and in the congregation that I attend there are people I wholeheartedly disagree with politically. But they are my friends, and we work at building what is common between us, and do not focus on the things we disagree about.
Excellent explaination of LDS political neutrality. It is a pretty easy arguement to make when all you have to say is Harry Reid and Orin Hatch are both active LDS! You will never hear voting Instructions come over the pulpit in an LDS church. They only time the LDS Church does get involved in the political arena is when there is an issue that particularily relates to moral values (like California trying to redefine marriage and other political attacks on the family or church) Never in regards to picking or supporting particular parties or candidates.
