Cantor wades into primary fight, endorsing Romney

Updated 11:22 a.m. — Eric Cantor, the second-ranking House Republican, endorsed Mitt Romney for president on Sunday, saying he is the candidate best suited to handle the issue of the economy.

Cantor, the House Majority Leader, announced his support on "Meet the Press," just two days before the primary on Tuesday in Virginia.

"What I have seen is a very hard-fought primary. And we have seen now that the central issue about the campaign now is the economy," Cantor told moderator David Gregory. "I just think there's one candidate in the case who can do that, and it's Mitt Romney."

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor thrusts his support behind Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney on NBC's Meet the Press.

Cantor is the highest-ranking Republian member of Congress to make an endorsement in the primary. Moreover, Cantor has emerged as a national political figurehead for conservatives on Capitol Hill; he's generally seen as the informal leader of the faction of anti-establishment conservatives to have been elected in 2010. To that end, he is one of three House Republicans considered the party's "Young Guns," along with Reps. Kevin McCarthy (Calif.) and Paul Ryan (Wis.), neither of whom have endorsed in the presidential race.

Romney adviser Eric Fehrnstrom told reporters traveling with Romney on Sunday that Cantor called the former Massachusetts governor on Wednesday to inform him of the endorsement.

The Virginia lawmaker's support adds to a collection of endorsements Romney has collected from elected officials. Eighty-one Republican members of Congress have voiced public support for Romney, according to Roll Call's count of endorsements. Just 11 members of Congress have endorsed former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, by comparison. Romney has additionally won endorsements from other national Republican figures like New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell.

Fehrnstrom suggested Cantor's support stems from an interest in riding Romney's coattails — coattails which, by implication, Fehrnstrom meant that Newt Gingrich or Rick Santorum wouldn't have for Republicans downballot.

"I gotta believe in the back of his mind he’s also thinking about maintaining a Republican majority in the house and elected republicans are looking for someone who has coattails, not concrete shoes," the Romney adviser said of Cantor.

Some of the other members of the House Republican leadership team have made endorsements; the No. 3 member of the GOP, Conference Chairman and Texas Rep. Jeb Hensarling, had endorsed Texas Gov. Rick Perry. Republican Policy Committee Chairman and Georgia Rep. Tom Price has endorsed Newt Gingrich.

Two members of the House GOP leadership have endorsed Romney, including Washington Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers, the Republican conference vice chairwoman, and Oregon Rep. Greg Walden, the chairman of the House Republican Leadership.

The top House Republican, Speaker John Boehner, has doggedly refused to make an endorsement in the Republican primary. A political spokesman for the speaker confirmed Saturday that Boehner won't endorse before the primary on Tuesday in his native Ohio, arguably the crown jewel of the Super Tuesday contests.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) has also declined, to date, to make an endorsement in the Republican race.

Cantor's endorsement comes at a point in Romney's campaign at which he's railed against opponent Rick Santorum's extensive experience in Congress. Romney has made his lack of time spent in Washington a cornerstone of his campaign.

The former Massachusetts governor has also broken, though, from congressional Republicans at points throughout the campaign. Most notably, Romney came out in opposition to a deal GOP leaders on Capitol Hill had struck with President Obama to raise the nation's debt ceiling last August after maintaining his silence for much of the debate.

Eric Cantor another of the Lock-step GOP Liberals. We use to call them RINO's but now we know their true colors. between Cantor and Boehner the Democrats have had it almost as good as when Pelosi was in charge. The Fact that Cantor endorses Romney is just more justification for being part of the "Not Romney" crowd. If Romney should accidentally win the White House the Liberals will stil be getting 90% of everything they ask for including keeping Obamacare. has everyone forgotten that piece of horrible legislation? This is why the Tea Party won so big in 2010. Has everyone forgotten that Romney was the original architect of this horrible legislation? With Romney or Obama Obamacare will destroy our health system. It wil also allow the government the most invasion nto our lives ever. Hitler, Stalin, Chavez, Castro allof these would have loved to have Obamacare style law in effect. It would have made their jobs so much easier turning their countries to Sommunism, Socialism, Marxism and Liberalism. These are all enslavement "ism's".

"Ihate...", I can just see the foam collecting around your mouth as you keyed in your delusional rant. If Hitler, Stalin, and Castro "would have loved to have Obamacare style law in effect," then why didn't they make one and put it in effect? After all, they were dictators.

It's no wonder that Cantor supports a muli-millionaire. Remember insider trading by Congress on 60 minutes. Cantor was a big part of blocking the Stock Act, which would require Congressman to disclose their stock investments more regularly and seek to end insider trading among Congress members. I have nothing against religious faith, but Cantor is over-bearing solely on his Jewish faith. Without a care of the rest of us Americans. Of course we all know of him working with the tea party dudes. Republician base would be better off without this dude. He's just a dude looking for power only, on preaching his faith on america's government laws.

Cantor's doing Romney no favor for crediting him on the economy, since Cantor is so ignorant on the subject himself. Eric Cantor and Donald Trump are endorsers that don't help.

Who cares what Cantor thinks? He's the reason we can't get anything done in congress. He's out of touch with reality and is one of the big reasons compromise is unachievable in the congress. If he were not there things would go much smoother and the work of congress might finally get done.

Well, well, well one phony hack has endorsed another. I guess "birds of a feather" really do flock together. How proud republicans must be of this collection of clowns! In just a few short months we have come to learn that republicans are truly the party of the 1%. They are attempting to destroy the middle class, curtail the civil rights of minorities, women and gays all at once. And, to really show their true colors, recognizing that perhaps the "masses of men (and women) might not sure their enthusiasm for destroying the country, they are now devoting their energies to suppressing the vote.

What a bunch of "profiles in courage"! Like I said...these guys are the kind of people even their mothers wouldn't be able to love!

Anti-American Eric Cantor endorses anti-American Mitt Romney to be the leader of the American people.

Its all about the hypocrisy. Right-wingers are very, very good when it comes to hypocrisy and very, very bad when it comes to fiscal policy, corruption, telling the truth, quality education, real science, affordable health care, free and open elections, fair and just courts, secret campaign funders and actual leadership.

You'd think that with the massive support of all these 81 congressmen and repub governors of most of these states, that mittens would be a bit further ahead, than where he is now.

After campaigning for the past six years, and spending $millions in Michigan, the home-town guy barely squeaked out a tie....even with the support of Governor Snyder.

I agree meee, the reason is that the "leaders of the REpublican party " are out of touch with real voters, there is a disconnect, endorsement from the establishment is not what those voters want it is a moot point though Obama is way ahead in recent polls that are not bought and paid for by the opposition.

Eric's claim to fame is to just scream slash and burn to the budget without any real attention as to what would happen to us if it actually happened. An endorsement from someone with a failed economic proposal is not something to cheer about.

It simply makes no difference who the little weasel endorses. If you have seen ONE republican, you have see them ALL. They all have to toe the line. They get their orders from the RICH who own them. And that is why you see them make decision favorable to the RICH. There is nothing wrong with being rich...unless they use their money and power to persuade those in office to do their bidding for them. Does that ever happen?

So, while you want to condemn the POOR, remember its not the poor who have the power.

What mr.photo-op zionist-shill eric cantor is doing by endorsing howdy-doody romney, is a desperate effort to try attracting last minute t-bagger votes for the ohio primary for romney....

if howdy doody romney loses ohio or barely pulls off a 1-2 point victory (again, as he did in his own home state), he and the entire GOP can simply close shop and go to the Moon where they all belong.

Of course, little back-stabber eric is also sleazing around for his 5 minutes of fame and -- like all gold worshippers -- fortune. IF by some stretch of fairy tale (or another 2000 and 2004 rigged election) howdy doody were to become President... guess who'd be sticking his big nose in howdy-doody's rear-end looking for the VP slot?

The eric cantor -t-bagger shill endorsement, is basically an open admission of desperation.

The GOP wants every American to study, work hard and become a success, as that is their base. The Dems. have worked very hard to get every American dependant on the Federal government for their financial well being, As that is their base. 1984, 14% of households did not pay federal income tax, today that number today nears 50%. The so called "Progressives" have done America a great disservice and self responsibility seems to have become a concept of the past.

A serial rapist who is extremely against women's right to get rid of unplanned, unexpected and unwanted pregnancies forced upon them by serial rapists bragged as he wrote the following:

" I have at least 6 children out there being raised by six different young school girls I raped. No one has been able to arrest me because each time I rape like that, I would smartly disappear without being caught.

One major reason I like Republican Party is their anti-abortion policy that could not allow my victims to get rid of my babies growing in their wombs no matter the circumstances. Yes, it made it possible for me also to have children out there. I saw a picture of one of the babies and he looks exactly like me. I wanted to have a biological baby and the only way I could have a baby brought into this world was to rape a girl and that is what I did. Women hate me because of my ugly appearance and a deformity that I have so raping was my only alternative of protecting my right to have children. One of my victims; a fifteen year old young school girl, whose parents were staunch supporters of Republicans' policies, really cried to her parents to let her get rid of my baby by terminating the pregnancy but the parents could not allow her. I am glad that I have this baby with her even though she does not know where I am. I am thankful to Republicans and her parents for having protected my baby. Democrats' policy of freedom to choose would have enabled the young girl to terminated the pregnancy and I would have lost my baby. The girl dropped out of school and even though she hates the baby, I do not care much because my baby is growing up.”

I read what this serial rapist wrote and was shocked. Many girls have been forced to carry rapists' babies in their wombs and have had their lives destroyed because Republicans believe that even rapists have a right to have their babies raised by their victims no matter what. Rapists are very happy with republicans on this.

Democrats DO NOT and HAVE NEVER encouraged abortion. What Democrats stand for is women’s freedom to terminate an illegal pregnancy that has been forced upon them. Regarding the above mentioned circumstances, Democrats policy is that this girl who was forcefully made pregnant by this rapist had a right to make the rapist understand that she was not obliged to reward and please him with a baby resulting from his sexual crime. Unlike Republicans who would reward such sex offenders with babies, Democrats are always out to fight for women’s right to choose. It is a stupid thing for some people to be too strict to be sensible is circumstances such as this one.

I wish the rapist mentioned here above was apprehended and brought to justice.

50 million legal abortions since the law was passed. How many as a result of rape? How many as a result of "casual" sex between irresponsible people? Just asking.

There are no difference anymore between Democrats or Republicans anymore. The democrats say they want to tax the rich. Then Obama offers a budget to do that just to make it look good. He knows it would never pass. If the Republicans did decide to tax the rich do you believe Obama would sign the bill. He would lose all his special interest money in the race. Its all a dog and pony show for people to think they are trying to help the American people.
