Santorum says US 'equality' comes from Judeo-Christian ethic

BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.

“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything?  It’s a narcotic," Santorum said.  "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."

The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.

"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."

While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.

At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity.  "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."

Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "

The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”

(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)

The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.

Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.

“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.

As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.

He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.

"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

I get so tired of pseudo Christians saying the liberals are at war with them. I guess they don't realize that there are just as many liberal Christians as there are conservative Christians. (Ironically, Jesus was an Arab liberal out to change the conservative Jewish religion in power at the time.) What people like Santorum are really saying is they want America to follow their religion and any attempt at religious freedom is an attack on their narrow, obsessive goal....to remake America into a total theocracy and change the Constitution so it follows a Christian form of Sharia law, much like Iran or other Middle Eastern countries.

sam, their whole world view is scary. that being said the problem is that people are allowed to believe whatever it is they want to believe. what if half of our country still worshiped thor. or zeus. they would have the right to and would be able to lobby government for whatever their beliefs dictate. that makes no sense. im not for controlling people or anything like that but that is what religion does. it scares people to death to the point they become zealots about it. ppl like santorum are afraid that the liberal mindset will lead their kids to hell. thats why they fight against it. if hell were a real place you wouldnt want your children to go there. they believe its real so in their mind they are fighting to protect their family. the real problem is religion and people believing BS.

This is what happens when you debate faith. You end up with people trying to prove who's faith is better.

All people of faith (and most people in general) are looking for guidance in living the best life we can. This stuff is ridiculous.

Santorum is a false prophet. He's trying to bring on Revelations for his own benefit. He's not a leader for anyone. GO AWAY!!!! You don't represent America!

If Don Imus can get fired for a racial slur about black women basketball players, then Rush should lose his show for directly calling a young woman a "slut" on national radio.

Time to end this idiocy. Everyone should email his employers and protest:

Santorum, hear this: a religion that does not allow women to have the same rights as men, is not a religion based on equality. What you are saying is a travesty, both of equality and religion.

Only when the Vatican allows women the right to priesthood all the way up to becoming popes, will there be REAL Judeo-Christian equality. Anything less than equal rights, equal treatment, equal everything, is simply a mockery of the word Equality. Now, Satanorum, tell me what part of this did you not understand....

So I guess in Mr. Santorum's viewpoint, we should all experience the freedom to live and die in suffering and misery if we can't afford private healthcare, we go hungry and malnourished if we cannot afford food, and we live under bridges and in cardboard boxes if we can't afford a place to live. Didn't Jesus say that what you do to the least of them, you do to me? Where does that virtue get lost in right wing conservative Christian theology of the 21 century as practiced by those such as Mr. Santorum. This also allows those same people to avoid paying taxes that can help care for the least of our brethren, to increase their riches on the backs of the poor, the destitute, and the needy. Maybe it's time for them to rewrite the New Testament, having Jesus call on his followers to avoid paying taxes to the government as they will waste it caring for the poor, deconstruct government programs that give aide and health care to the needy as they're simply lazy parasites on the backs of hardworking Americans, and make sure those same people will breed huge numbers of children who will be born into misery as we wouldn't want to provide birth control so that they can spend all that free time on their hands not working and having sex. Rick Santorum, you need to go back to Sunday School and relearn what Jesus taught his followers.

Santorum is right in saying "equality" comes from the Judeo-Christian tradition. But he still doesn't get it right. The key person in that tradition, Jesus, was focused on practicing 24/7 the power of love, justice and equality, and seeking to ensure "everyone in the world" would have enough and be treated justly. Today, Santorum and his followers call that perspective on equality and justice "socialism," though not the early members of the Jesus community.

Besides, what Santorum doesn't understand is that "equality," and the power of love, as opposed to the love of power, are at the core of many religions even though religious folks at times get these concepts twisted or pervert them in pursuing the love of power.

Well, he's right in a sense. Our sense of equality is Western/Judeo-Christian. And it's a wonderful thing. I do get tired of those who hate their own culture (you know who you are).

Western ideals of equality come from many areas including Anglo-Saxon common law, Greco-Roman proto-democratic ideals (i.e., Plato), the Reformation (Protestantism), and it crystallized in the Enlightenment in the writings of many including Voltaire, Rosseau, and eventually Thomas Jefferson.

The ironic thing about this is how much conservatives hate France, yet the intellectual home of the Enlightenment was in France. It's also ironic how Santorum plays up Western culture and our Constitution while denigrating intellectuals. But the Enlightenment and our Constitution is a product of several centuries of intellectuals.

And to state, as Santorum does, that Western culture is superior to every other culture is disgusting and bigoted. Zieg Hiel Mr. Santorum. Good luck with your "master culture" spiel.

Western, yes. Not Judeo-Christian. Indeed, the seeds of equality came from outside Judeo-Christianity, and those seeds are the seeds that have always rubbed against Judeo-Christian primacy.

I think his point is that children from less stable home environments (single parent mom, no dad, etc...) tend to eat more junk food, fast food, don't sit down to a family dinner at night. Studies show that children who eat a family meal with both parents are healthier, more likely to graduate from high school and even college, marry later and have children later. All good things.

There is no such thing as 'Judeo-Christian'; certainly not 'equality'. Christians created ghettos and modern slavery. Santorum calls for the replacement of the First Amendment by his version of 'christian' ethics. He advocates laws banning the practice of my faith, one being his advocacy of 'life at conception'. It directly opposes the only reference to abortion on the Bible with its exact opposite.
