Santorum says US 'equality' comes from Judeo-Christian ethic

BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.

“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything?  It’s a narcotic," Santorum said.  "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."

The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.

"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."

While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.

At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity.  "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."

Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "

The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”

(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)

The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.

Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.

“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.

As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.

He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.

"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

There was an equality in the Code of Hammurabi and in the Greek idea of democracy--both preceding Christianity. There is equality in Islam but none of them give equality to all--only to those in certain classes, like: those who are citizens, those who are poor,or those in the chosen religion. Of course the religions of the God of the Mideast don't accept women as equals--OR those of the Eastern religions, homosexuals, atheists or many other categories. Just what does he mean by "equality?

Santorum doesn't believe in equality for all either! He said recently he wants to rescind the existing marriages of lgbt couples; he even decried the Supreme Court decision which struck down laws against same-sex intimacy between consenting adults. Santorum's hypocrisy is really hard to stomach, especially since he seems oblivious to religious freedoms for any but his own brand of fundamentalism. He clearly has no respect for what the U.S. Constitution says, but only for what he wants it to say. What a small-minded man!

good question. what does equality mean? if it means to tolerate sin, then no we cannot do that. however, it is not our job to do the judging. that's the right of God only. scriptures says that man that lieth with man shall be put to death. so, of course, we understand why lgbt couples get AIDS, herpes, and other sexually transmitted diseases and die.

To Rick, equality means we are all equally required to think exactly like he does!

    Lucille,

With your logic that God is punishing gay people through AIDS and other STD's, why is he also punishing innocent little children with cancer?

Were the people who suffered during the last tornado outbreak bigger sinners than you?

I recommend you take a break from your church for a while to let some sun shine in your life.

Lucille, hold your own beliefs, even if judgemental, that's fine with me. But Santorum will use the power he seeks to deny equality to people who do not share his beliefs. That is the kind of judgement which, as you say, is the right of God only.

Which religious backbround elevates women except the Episcopalians

Santorum cannot claim that the concept of equality comes from the "Judeo-Christian ethic" without explaining how Abraham and his direct progeny OWNED SLAVES according to the Old Testament. . .

I would like Santorum to address the issue of equality in terms of St. Paul's admonition from the New Testament that "slaves should return to their masters" rather than his issuing any remark on the idea that slavery is immoral. The Judeo-Christian tradition has many precedents for advocating equality, but those are matched-at the very least- by precedents from the Old and New Testaments that accept slavery, rape, mass murder, infanticide, polygamy and other crimes against humanity as either ordered or ordained by God.

EVERY GOOD CHRISTIAN SHOULD CALL OUT SANTORUM ON THIS TWISTED READING OF THE SACRED TEXTS.

yes, Abraham owned slaves; it is called the spoils of war. when a nation conquers another nation they are allowed to take booty or spoils of war, even captives.

during the apostle paul's day, a slave was not like the slaves in the United States. a slave in his day was a trusted tutor/teacher of the master's children, had free reign of the household or business. in some places in Rome a slave had the elevated status of an heir.

once again God allowed the Hebrews to fight, to defend themselves, to win in battle, and to took take from the enemy. if that meant killing the old, young, little ones. as a matter of fact, He did instruct King Saul to do just that to the Agagites, beginning with King Agag, whom priest Samuel had to cut into twelve pieces, each piece representing the twelve tribes of Israel.

          Lucille,

PLEASE, open your mind up to other ideas. The religious ideas you expressed really only seem to make sense to people who are neck-deep into one particular brand of religion.

The ideas are cruel- as is the idea of a god that would send 90% of his human creations to an endless burning torture.

I have been on the same side of the fence you are on. I got out- and it is wonderful to be free from all of the insanity.

The evil right wing christian extremist known as Rick Santorum is failing quickly and will soon leave the primary race. His campaign should be taught in universities in political science classes as the way NOT to win an election; first, offend half the population with misogynistic clap trap, then inject your narrow, hateful religious views into the campaign as much as possible, then write off the voters in key states by blowing the application process so as not to appear on the ballots. Final verdict: Epic Fail.

Romney will the GOP's #1 loser in November. Read 'em and weep.

President Obama will win again by another landslide with the votes of the moderate voters whom the GOP has abandoned in its zeal to appeal to the right wing lunatic fringe. The Republican Party, as I have said before, is the party of exclusion, not inclusion, and that is not a strategy for winning elections.

OK.. hmmm.. number 1... socialized medicine (which we do NOT have in the US and is certainly NOT a part of what the Gross Old Piety calls "Obamacare") is not something "for nothing". Every person in every country that actually HAS socialized medicine pays a good percentage of their income to pay for it. And in many countries (Germany in particular), it works very well - and actually ends up being cheaper in many cases than what we in the US pay for private insurance. And number 2... the major cause of childhood obesity is not the "breakdown of the family", but rather the subsidizing of the food industry who pushes ever more fattening and less healthy food products onto an unsuspecting public. And NO, your body does NOT treat high fructose corn syrup exactly the same as any other sugar you ingest! That is a bald faced LIE from the corn industry. While all sugars are utilized by the body, the more complex ones (like sucrose) require more calories to "burn" than the simpler ones (like fructose). And besides that, most of the places that HFCS is added is completely unnecessary.... it just makes the product more appetizing and therefore more "addictive" - and encourages the ingestion of sugars and therefore the result of type 2 diabetes! Santorum - what a frothy mix!!!

              "

Santorum says US 'equality' comes from Judeo-Christian ethic" --- Here are some STRIKING examples of "Judeo-Christiasn ethic" ---

              Deuteronomy

              Chapter 2

              32. Then Sihon came out against us, he and all his people, to fight at Jahaz.

              33. And the LORD our God delivered him before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and all his people.

34.And we took all his cities at that time, and utterly destroyed the men, and the women, and the little ones, of every city, we left none to remain:

              Chapter 3

              3. So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

              4. And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

              5. All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

              6. And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

              Chapter 7

              1. When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girga@!$%#es, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;

              2. And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them:

              5. But thus shall ye deal with them; ye shall destroy their altars, and break down their images, and cut down their groves, and burn their graven images with fire.

16, And thou shalt consume all the people which the LORD thy God shall deliver thee; thine eye shall have no pity upon them: neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

              25. The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire: thou shalt not desire the silver or gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therin: for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God.

              Chapter 12

              1. These are the statutes and judgments, which ye shall observe to do in the land, which the LORD God of thy fathers giveth thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the earth.

              2. Ye shall utterly destroy all the places, wherein the nations which ye shall possess served their gods, upon the high mountains, and upon the hills, and under every green tree:

              3. And ye shall overthrow their altars, and break their pillars, and burn their groves with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods, and destroy the names of them out of that place.

There is no such thing as a Judeo-Christian ethic. That is only rolled out when a candidate wants not to appear as a bigot so he throws a carrot to the Jews, as if to say, "See I am including you". It is obvious that Sanitorium has no understanding of Islam, but has rather wrapped his thinking in stereotypes produced by Palin brain washed bible thumping right wing hoodlums. Of course there is justice and equality in Islam - how else have Muslims worshiped together as blacks, olive skinned middle easterners, Asians and Caucasians while Christians in this country divide themselves by racial lines, or would not allow them to join their sect because blacks were inferior? Christians and Mormons in this country are teaching that women are second class, forcing them into pregnancy so much so that women at a very early age want a hysterectomy. The problem with holding yourself as the example of equality and saying others don';t have it is that your hypocrisy becomes even more pronounced. And your's Sanitorium is abundantly clear.

Since when has paying for insurance, whether through private payments, group insurance premiums or taxes become getting something for nothing? Where does he think the money to pay for medical and health care comes from? Not, I assure you, from some philanthropic gazillionair who just wants to pay other people's medical bills. Here's the basics of insurance Ricky - a lot of people pool their money for a specific reason to ensure that when they need the specified service (health care, home repair, security for one's family after death etc.) there is enough money in the pool to reimburse each member for their losses. Trry to think of it in terms of a group of people pooling their money to form a corporation to be able to create something none individually could accomplish. If I put it in terms of capital wealth creation you might understand it - because you sure don't seem to get it when the goal for the individual paying for insurance is to avoid personal financial destruction. Instead of a dividend from a corporation, the insured get reinbused for a loss - got it yet?

"Of course there is justice and equality in Islam - how else have Muslims worshiped together as blacks, olive skinned middle easterners" and WOMEN too. The best example of EQUALITY is during the HAJJ where whites, black, brown, yellow people all stand shoulder to shoulder before the Creator, though this EQUALITY can also be seen in the mosques FIVE TIMES A DAY.

Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday

Lincoln would be turning over in his grave if he knew what had become of his republican party.

                                Dear Rick,

Did most, if not all, of the U.S. slave owners call themselves Christians?

Read that Constitution again dude. It seems leave a few people out when the peoples rights are laid out.

Like women, slaves, native americans. Rights were granted to White MEN

Equality from other cultures?!!! Nien, Nien, Nien, Nien: All form of equality comes from Judeo-Christians. So, to hell with those Moozlims, Hindews, Guthamburger-Sithartjews. If he becomes President minorities would be locked in work camps and systematically killed or deported which ever he prefers, our army would be 100 times larger recruitinng kids under the age of twelve with smaller goverment ofcourse, and before we know it we have conquered most of Europe and the Middle East.

Why is Santorum constantly spewing his religious beliefs? Is he running for pope, or president? Either way, I guess it's nice to know up-front that he's bat-@!$%# crazy.

Mr. Santorum, as my dad used to say, when someone said something ridiculous, i may have been born at night, but it wasn't last night.

This election should be about our economy, job creation, continuing the recovery and our national security. Instead we find ourselves having to defend advances we thought we had solidified decades ago. Women have been voting other issues since Griswold v. Connecticut and Roe v. Wade. Unfortunately opponents of equality have taken this time to chip away at the right to choose and the right to privacy (could there be anything less private and more intrusive than transvaginal ultrasound?) Missouri is considering a law which would require doctors to dispense scientifically unsound information to women seeking abortions. At the same time, it would allow a doctor to withhold medical information from a patient seeking an abortion and hold the doctor legally harmless if the the withholding of that information results in medical injury to the mother or child for anything short of the mothers death.

Unfortunately, women need to again make our right to control our own bodies (including equal access to contraception and unrestricted abortion prior to fetal viability) a primary issue in this election. Clearly, the minute our backs are turned the reactionary misogynistic forces in this country take the opportunity to undermine these rights.

I will be voting social issues this year and I can't believe I am having to go back to do this again. It is still more important, however, to vote on issues of equality than on management of the business cycle.

anita, dont worry you have millions behind you. we will fight until women are viewed as equal. we will always fight for the right to choose. its a shame that in 2012 women are once again under attack and its about controlling their bodies as if they have no brain and cant think. its disrespectful and(i usually refrain from using this argument) completely unamerican.

What I find so remarkable is that the Republicans have been so bald-faced about their intention to re-subjugate women and minorities. One would have thought they'd try to roll back progress one step at a time, and that they'd be at least a little subtle in their going about it.
