Santorum says US 'equality' comes from Judeo-Christian ethic

BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.

“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything?  It’s a narcotic," Santorum said.  "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."

The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.

"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."

While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.

At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity.  "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."

Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "

The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”

(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)

The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.

Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.

“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.

As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.

He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.

"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

For a guy who believes so strongly in his "equality" supporting religion, to the point where it should control all of our lives, he sure has a strange way of showing it.

For God's sake, Amy, do your homework! The half of Americans that don't pay any taxes, don't OWE any taxes! "The lowest-income Americans — those who make less than $25,000 a year — account for the largest number of those not paying any federal income tax: 76% as of 2009. But that share has been decreasing for years. Meanwhile, the percentage of nontaxable returns has been growing for people with higher incomes. As of 2009, more than 20,000 filers making more than $200,000 a year — 1,470 of whom had adjusted gross income of more than $1 million — owed no income tax. Nontaxable returns from people with income between $75,000 and $100,000 went from 4,025 in 1996 to 476,624 in 2009 — an increase of almost 12,000%. More than 1,400 millionaires didn't pay income taxes in 2009, either." This information comes from the non-partisan Tax Policy Center in Washington and has been verified by several major news sources. Also 80% of tax filers pay some sort of federal tax: social security, unemployment, etc., not including state, local and county taxes, taxes on gas, cigarettes, liquor, etc.

$25,000 for a family maybe. But $12,500 is the total amount you can make being single and not pay taxes. It is those people making under $12,500 a year that just drives the republicans crazy because they are getting away with such an extravagant lifestyle by not paying taxes.

But don't ask the 1% for higher taxes that might hurt them.

            Santorum can't stop lying.

Equality existed long before judeo-christian morals existed.

It's pathetic that he keeps trying to invent his own reality where everything that has ever existed is because of the particular version of the religion he practices.

            Did Rick read Timothy 2:12?

Did he think that was equal?

              #29.1 - Sun Mar 4, 2012 1:52 AM EST

there must be a certain order in the church. back in the church's infancy, the women were running their mouths, telling their husbands, who were leaders, what to do. paul did not hate women. actually he was married at some point because he was a member of the Sanhedrin and each one had a wife.

Nathan-1680585 is correct that the concept of equality in America owes a lot to Greece. Plato and Aristotle wrote on the subject. And I remember reading that up until the eighteenth century, it was assumed that human beings are unequal by nature. Hobbes (1651) postulated that in their natural condition, individuals possess
equal rights, because over time they have the same capacity to do each other harm. Locke (1690) argued that all human beings have the same natural right to both (self-)ownership and freedom. In many ways it was secular minded men and women who believed in actual equality.

Rousseau (1755) declared social inequality to be a virtually primeval decline of the human race from natural equality in a harmonious state of nature: a decline catalyzed by the human urge for perfection, property and possessions (Dahrendorf 1962). For Rousseau (1755, 1762), the resulting inequality and rule of violence can only be overcome by tying unfettered subjectivity to a common civil existence and popular sovereignty. In Kant's moral philosophy (1785), the categorical imperative formulates the equality postulate of universal human worth. His transcendental and philosophical reflections on autonomy and self-legislation lead to a recognition of the same freedom for all rational beings as the sole principle of human rights (Kant 1797, p. 230). Such Enlightenment ideas stimulated the great modern social movements and revolutions, and were taken up in modern constitutions and declarations of human rights. During the French Revolution, equality — along with freedom and fraternity — became a basis of the Déclaration des droits de l´homme et du citoyen of 1789.

What is interesting to me is the fact it's conservative Christians like Mr. Santorum who don't seem to like the idea of equality for all. And let's look closer at the Catholic church who in recent and past centuries worked to deny equality to all. Or look at Protestant Baptist church's who during the civil rights movement tried to stop integration, and voting rights for people of colour. Even today you have Orthodox Jews in areas of NYC who demand non Jews dress a certain way in public places. And Christians sure didn't want women to have the vote.

Sure, ye olde skanky rat. And as pruny and lizardlike as you are, I'm sure you heard it firsthand from Peter and John that they were also accomplices in Jesus' little plot to damnify Judas. After all, he DID realize what he did after Jesus died. He figured that if he killed his best friend, he ought to go the same way (even if he ended up at a different destination than him), since to him, death's probably an equal punishment.

But I don't believe that. There's no proof Jesus even existed, except a tome reproduced and edited by a bunch of white Pharisees clad in silver and gold. No body = No proof = Jesus is fake.

Rather strange coming from Santorum given that the GOP worships INequality above all things. To contemporary conservativism, the rich, the religious, the male and the white rule over all others. Workers have no rights, nor do women, non-Christians or anyone else. They believe a plutocracy expresses the will of God. So how can they defend what they themselves condemn?

Amy in California: " And my final point is, American women have incredible freedom in America because of our Judeo-Christian heritage. And women in Saudi Arabia have no freedom (and can't even show their faces in public) because of their Islamic heritage.

Did I miss something here? When did we start comparing American women to Saudi women? American do not have incredible freedom in America because of (our) Judeo-Christian heritage, WE HAVE IT DESPITE IT. Again, do your research, missy. This "heritage" crushed women's rights for centuries before we got to where we are today and it is again trying to crush our freedom and rights by putting us all in a little box and labeling it "Christian (Catholic, Evangelical and the like) beliefs only. All others will be dismissed as blasphemous and send to the spot we reserved for you in the Hot Zone."

My point about American women and Saudi women is the Saudi women have no rights due to their Islamic religion. They are routinely stoned, beheaded and the victims of "honor" killings because their husbands, fathers, brothers, etc.... have the right to do so. Jesus said that he came so "that we might have life, and more abundantly." That right to life and freedom has absolutely been trampled on by men who claimed to be Christians. But that Christian tenet has won out here in America and women have rights that Saudi women can't even fathom. Please note -- I have been extremely courteous in all of my posts and have not called anyone names. But I notice that many of my posts have been collapsed by the community and I've been called "missy" by you and "slut" by someone else. Other people have used terrible profanity in their posts and theirs have not been collapsed! I'm just trying to wage a debate here.

Leave it to Rick Santorum to trace the history of egalitarianism Only to Judaism and Christianity :/ FAIL

I would like to see Rick Santorum visit the all the homes of those destroyed by tornadoes in our country, tornadoes which have been increasing in numbers over the years, and tell them that he doesn't believe in giving them anything for free, because that's "narcotic." How despicable he can be.

How on earth did a demagogue, like Mr. Santorum get to run for the Presidency of the United States. First of all Democracy was not conceived by Christens or Jews. Democracy comes from the Greek word Demokratia, rule of the people (which does not exist in the United States), long before Christians who's religious institutions are anything but democratic, or the Jews who lived in autocratic tribes lead by dictators. Democracy is an ancient Greek concept and practice. The Greeks worshiped many gods.

His remark that Socialism is a narcotic because you get something for nothing, shows Mr. Santorum knows nothing about Socialism. The essence of Socialism is in the collective or sharing of resources contributed by citizens and redistributed to those in need. It's called equality. Everyone contributes in accordance with their own abilities, some with taxes some with labor or service to society. No one gets a free ride in Socialism.

This person has to be the most ignorant, uneducated person to ever run for the office of President. This man is direct threat to every intellectual, teacher, author, artist, scientist and is a caveman reactionary that will set America back centuries socially and scientifically.

And the conservative base are clinging onto their last bastion of pseudo religious propaganda in Santorum.

I think what every Christian in this country should know, is that freedom of religion is the greatest gift the fore fathers gave us. It allows each of us to worship as we see fit, without fear of retribution. It is a very slippery slope to go down once you start enacting law and policy based on religion. There are too many religions and the tenants will start stepping on each other and eventually what you believe in will come under attack by the law.

This fictional war by Obama on religion is nothing but smoke and mirrors for a party that has nothing to offer up in the way of answers.

If Mr Santorum actually had a clue, he would realize that universal health coverage (available in EVERY OTHER INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD) means that the populace would not have to spend time asking for approval, worrying over where to find the money to pay for coverage, or having to bankrupt because of health costs.

His claims that morals trump ethics means he again doesn't have a clue. He needs to go to a non-Catholic school to learn about actual history, not revisionist dogmatic history from his church.

He has no clue.. He is stating equality came from Christians, at the same time trying to take away rights of women. So is it equality or NOT Ricky???

Typical moronic post from a Christian "Ourdoc".... YOU should try taking your own advice. That "good book" of yours is repleat with behavior sanctioned by your "god" that any thinking person would find reprehensible.

Your children disobedient? Smash their heads against the rocks.

Wanna own some slaves? No problem.

Wanna be a misogynistic, bigoted ass? That's not only ok, that's what your god wants.

Your "god" killed over two million people in the "good book". As described, he is a vain, egotistical control freak with self-image issues who requires worship from his own creations, and failure to do so correctly will result in suffering without end for all aternity.

Sorry buddy, but NO SALE. If your purported god WERE real, I wouldn't want to spend five seconds in his demented company, nor in the company of his minions like yourself - let alone eternity.

Crimson Cujo -- you got a better explanation of how human life was formed? Because until you show me the "missing link" or how gasses suddenly exploded into a perfectly ordered universe with absolute laws of physics or explain why an amoeba crawled out of the muck and turned into a tulip... an oak tree... a human... and so on and so on, I'm going to go with Lucille and the concept of a designer who designed our world.

Incredible. Incredible how broken are the minds of the people in this country. Would you pick up a gun and risk your life to defend my freedom or the freedom of your descendants? Do you have any concept of what freedom is? I fear for you and your children and the country since you would trade your freedom for a little temporary comfort. Freedom and equality doesn't mean and never has meant that you get what your neighbor has - it simply means you have the freedom to pursue that or what ever else you like as long as it doesn't impinge on your neighbors freedom. That's equality. That's freedom. If you're poor as dirt it only means that you have the right to pursue work no different from anyone else. If you're more ignorant than a dog you have the right to learn what ever seems useful to you. Until you understand this you will always be slaves to your own foolish and selfish desires which your government overseers will use to keep you enthralled to the state. You are the mob and you are satisfied by mere bread and circuses. You remain fools until you awake from the stupor, the narcotic of your false freedom and equality.

Sir, your paragraph above was probably one of the most lucid, intelligent, and true things I have had the pleasure of reading on this board. If all people understood what it takes to keep the freedoms that they take so much advantage of, this country could be even better than it already is. Maybe, just maybe someone reading your post will have their eyes opened to the true world around them. People want, want, and want some more, but do not want to put forth the effort to attain it. They seem to think it is our duty and their right to take from us what we have worked so hard for. I for one stayed in school, did not sell drugs on the corner, steal because I was too lazy to work, or impregnate some teenage girl. I have earned all that is mine and then they want to take it from me and give it to those people whom I chose not to be like? I THINK NOT!!! Have a good day.

And gay people? Well, let's not even go their. And of course the Bible advocated slavery (check out the Book of Colossians). What a lovely concept of equality (puke).

In Rick Santorum's world, we are all equal as long as we are right-radical Christians, then everything is just hunky-dory. Uhuh... I am pretty sure that Yeshua is doing a facepalm right about now, assuming that all this malarky is even important enough for him to pay attention...
