Santorum says US 'equality' comes from Judeo-Christian ethic

BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.

“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything?  It’s a narcotic," Santorum said.  "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."

The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.

"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."

While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.

At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity.  "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."

Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "

The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”

(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)

The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.

Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.

“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.

As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.

He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.

"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

This is true and then maybe malign or slander. The message from Christians is that God says that all man are God's children (equality). In practice, christian separates themselves from non-believers and then Christians link non-believers to be devil worshipers. Then they form mob to kill the devils. This effectively eliminate equality among man.

In parallel, the ancient Greeks have equality and democracy in its infant state. The founding fathers of USA are the true founder of democracy that exists in America today. USA is a melting pot of immigrants from many civilizations. So, I would give Christians credit for equality if they stay true with Christianity and God.

Something like that....without the negativity and bitterness.

ugly truth can provide source for bitterness and negativity. Not everyone can identify purity of true as beautiful. What's true to an angel maybe ugly to a demon. That's one way to separate oneself from angels and demons. Christian are not the only ones who can separate themselves from the devils. We all can and including demons and angels.

Well, for one thing, the "ugly truth" is that the Greeks had slaves and did not provide equal rights to all who resided in their particular political jurisdiction...but let's not let the truth stand in the way of your biased narrative.

Equality? My history tells me that early Americans demanded that you believe in their Christianity or you were labeled a witch or warlock. Now that is equality for you! LOL

How many times is this bloated, serial-adulterer going to spew this outright lie???

The president does not now nor ever has had control of the energy market.

When gas hit 4$ a gallon under Dubya where was the outcry??

Neither America nor Christianity created "equality". They are ideals we adopted in our writings and after 200+ years we're still fighting to live up to in reality.

John Adams specifically rejected equal rights for women so "All men are created equal" was meant ALMOST literally. This is primarily due to their Christian beliefs. It would've been better written "All white male land owners (wealth owners) are created equal".

It took until the Civil War before the concept of Black men being free through service to country became an option. Even then, it wasn't that Black men should be equal or even citizens...just NOT OWNED.

And we've been fighting these same types of battles with ourselves ever since then. Now it's time for all of us Christians to truly encourage "equality" in society.

I've travelled extensively and agree that many parts of the world aren't even where we are. That doesn't make up right, it only makes up better by comparison.

What wouldn't be right about my statement by seeing someone less fortunate?

The part where you fail to realize where those ideas of equality come? And why those you reference are less fortunate?

Jesus was all about equality. He healed all. He fed all. He healed a Roman centurion's "pais", He spoke to women directly (it was culturally forbidden), even women who were Samaritans, He was all about, "First shall be last and last shall be first," and turning the Jewish patriarchal heirachy on its head.

Christianity as we know it however has rejected everything about this and reverted to a patriarchal, heirachical structure that allows for oppression of women, slaves, foreigners and preserving the class system. The minute it became an "Imperial Religion" it was all about serving the ends of Empire's power brokers at the expense of the masses.

It was growing Deist and humanist thinking within Christian societies after the Enlightenment that started the now "radical" idea that all men are created equal and that includes women, Indians, Native peoples and negroes and we all have the right to self-actualization and freedom.

              Equality = Socialism?

In the early 19th-century, "socialism" referred to any concern for the social problems of capitalism regardless of the solution. [Both concern and regardless suggest that a form of constant thinking was a requirement, however passing between ideology (requiring some thought) and implementation (reduced thought?) turns constant thinking to a constant problem. Hence don’t subscribe to ideologies that result in not thinking.]

Later then Equality to end slavery?

However, by the late 19th-century, "socialism" had come to signify opposition to capitalism and advocacy for an alternative system based on some form of social ownership. [Note replacing (concern for social problems) by (opposition) reduces thinking to nothing coincident to (advocacy for an alternative) without the thinking required?]

Coincidently then the funds to build the Statue of Liberty, were not forthcoming from Capitalist, yet finished school children? [Sort of like the thinking was spoiled by civil war, but promised a new by children.]

“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything? It’s a narcotic," Santorum said. "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it.”

The problem with socialized medicine like Liberty ... You don't even know what you're missing (the whip of slavery, surgery without anesthesia, sepsis without antibiotics, the dynamism of hard struggle with death all around you. Perhaps all progress must do is fail.)

The tradition: a set of biblical rules that must necessarily conflict with each other, for the purpose of reminding believers that thinking is required, otherwise it is like a narcotic, and you don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the scope of what the world offers, or act appropriately in using the gift of life, and to work to improve the world, because you’ve been given simple rules, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different. We want everyone the same without thinking, and able to blame the different.

“But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."

No, we’ll not talk about the economy and how it causes unneeded stress on the family; instead we will vow to block progress, placing our hope that rich dollars are donated to our dying organizations, helping us toward the pain and sacrifice that we must make others share equally.

No, No, we’ll not talk about the economy and how it causes unneeded stress on the neighborhood; instead we will double vow to block progress, being against rules, regulations designed to promote better neighborhoods, to address the best places to promote business, to limit unwieldy influence of trash architecture, nor look at how to improve paving the streets.

No, No, No, we’ll not talk about the economy and how is causes unneeded stress on communities; instead we will promote destructive capitalism, the waste of vast resources to tear down poorly built structures, just to build more poorly designed structures, and we’ll never promote community, neighborhood or home investments. Does it really make sense to build towering office buildings, in crowded cities?

But we will at every turn criticize, anyone else who tries to better the world, attack everyone who offers a thought provoking discussion that reminds of what is important. We must engage in mindless hurtful, inane and irrelevant beside the point issue, and blame every devil in the wood pile against hope. We must tear down the world as it is, completely and utterly, so that the future will be built on with towering ignorance, using granite stones on bricks of plaster floated on quaking sands, with no one left to remember what is was like to live in thinking world.

The future you offer is one where workers walk to work on their knees, and bend over more as more foot rests are needed, and to beg for more lashes from the whip. No doubt then we will be equal, in economic terms equal in poverty, in spirituals term equal in despair, and as other men have worked their lives toward unfetter power, we will not fear death, but welcome it in the equality of the grave, sooner if it helps the powerful later if servers the master.

The leaders that preach hate, and revel in it, those leaders that demonstrate their power by recruiting haters, these leaders must rule us, as we will not rule ourselves, nor give it a thought, we welcome despair as it pleases you so.

He's right, now if most Jews & Christians would practice what they are preached more than atheists like me do, maybe religion wouldn't look so hypcritical.

Judeo-Christian ethics equals equality for all? According to President/Pope Rick Santorum we would not be equal. He does not believe in public education (who will teach our children, not all parents are teachers and are too busy trying to make ends meet), Social Security/Medicare (who will care for the elderly and ill when they need it after contributing to the system their working lives), higher education (the same kind of education he received but feels is unnecessary for the rest of us and our children because we and our children would become "snobs"), modern health care and treatments for women (the right to choose, use contraceptives, plan our families, protect us from disease and prevent cancer) and the rights of gays/lesbians or anyone living differently than he believes. In the world of Rick Santorum we would be living in the world of Medieval Catholic beliefs with him as our governmental, spiritual and ethical guide.
