BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.
“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything? It’s a narcotic," Santorum said. "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."
The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.
"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."
While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.
At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity. "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."
Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "
The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”
(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)
The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.
Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.
“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.
As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.
He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.
"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

Equality? Sure..... so long as you were a land owning, white male (who probably owned slaves which was/is sanctioned in the bible).
What is so scary is that there are people that actually vote for these yahoos.
Dear Rick:
Equality. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.
Santorum is contining to tap in a deeper emotional and fundmental core of human experience and appears to resonate much more strongly with the GOP electorate than the more material selfish pandering focus of many other Republican candidates that may be one of the major problems with American society today. The Establishment should be worried if Santorum becomes the GOP nominee.
What does Barack Obama have to do with socialized medicine.
I grieve for the people of England and Scandinavia, slaves to the socialized medicine that has robbed them of the "dynamism" of life even as they live longer than we do and pay less for it. It must be a onerous burden indeed.
Come to think of it, this also applies to veterans and those on active duty. Let's return dynamism to the armed forces by privatizing military health care.

Sure...if you've got a third grade parochial school understanding of what a socialized economy really is. What a basically stupid-smart person Mr. Santorum is.
Furthermore, on "equality" being a Judeo-Christian idea---that's a convenient and comfortable fantasy world in which to reside. What happened to The Enlightenment...which the RCC struggled mightily against?
Absolutely. The only Americans who receive socialized medicine are veterans and members of the armed forces. Including illegal immigrants and anchor babies. I resent my tax dollars paying for the health care of people who put their lives on the line for me. It's a scandal.
Your second to last sentence was sarcasm, right? I hope so.
None of this matters. Unfortunately, Obama is going to win.
You must mean "fortunately."
I have wondered why the republicans running for president are so lame,,, I think that the republicans really dont want the white house this time around,, there is so much that needs to be finished and they dont have a clue how to fix anything or they would have by now,,, besides the senate and the house has so much more power than the president and they can continue blaming obama for another 4 years
Yup, Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité. I believe that this was the work of Deists.
You laugh, but the French are dangerous. Imagine putting the rights of man above property rights.
C'mon, keep it easy to read for us backwoods, inbred, 3rd grade dropouts. ;)
Insanitorium needs to read the "judo-chrisitan" bible and I mean really read all of it and take off the blinders. Read about Lilith. She wanted equality and the judo-christian god CURSED her for it. Equality is not christian, it never was.
"Religious controversies are always productive of more acrimony and irreconcilable hatreds than those which spring from any other cause. Of all the animosities which have existed among mankind, those which are caused by the difference of sentiments in religion appear to be the most inveterate and distressing, and ought most to be depreciated. I was in hopes that the enlightened and liberal policy, which has marked the present age, would at least have reconciled Christians of every denomination so far that we should never again see the religious disputes carried to such a pitch as to endanger the peace of society." --George Washington, letter to Edward Newenham, October 20, 1792
Thomas Jefferson, elaborated about the history of common law in his letter to Thomas Cooper on February 10, 1814:
"For we know that the common law is that system of law which was introduced by the Saxons on their settlement in England, and altered from time to time by proper legislative authority from that time to the date of Magna Charta, which terminates the period of the common law. . . This settlement took place about the middle of the fifth century. But Christianity was not introduced till the seventh century; the conversion of the first christian king of the Heptarchy having taken place about the year 598, and that of the last about 686. Here then, was a space of two hundred years, during which the common law was in existence, and Christianity no part of it. . . if any one chooses to build a doctrine on any law of that period, supposed to have been lost, it is incumbent on him to prove it to have existed, and what were its contents. These were so far alterations of the common law, and became themselves a part of it. But none of these adopt Christianity as a part of the common law. If, therefore, from the settlement of the Saxons to the introduction of Christianity among them, that system of religion could not be a part of the common law, because they were not yet Christians, and if, having their laws from that period to the close of the common law, we are all able to find among them no such act of adoption, we may safely affirm (though contradicted by all the judges and writers on earth) that Christianity neither is, nor ever was a part of the common law." ~ Thomas Jefferson, elaborating on the history of common law… Letter to Thomas Cooper on February 10, 1814
I am geussing that the " righteous right " never read that. They scream that the U.S. needs to go back to a God fearing nation under strict Christian values. That sounds suspiously like the Taliban, Iran, etc. Religion and mans efforts to force his views of morality, justice, and need to control what others think has caused more war, strife and general ill will than any other factor thoughout history. Why do you feel the need to force you views onto me?
anybody wanna ruin santorums day and tell him that "the left" shares his judeo-christian ethic?
which is kinda why they keep saying "equality".
on second thought, that might short-circuit his brain and kill him instantly. which, or course, would severely dampen the entertainment value of the republican primary season. so... never mind. forget i said anything.
Your last part is what we want .... Rick is sadly entertaining. He does have value, he reminds us all why the fight for freedom is one of eternal vigilance.
obesity is about making corporation rich from fast food franchises, prepackaged food full of chemicals, and animals force fed chemicals to make them something they are not. Do away with fast foods and you'll find many people having to re-learn how to cook but it will be good for them. My mother is 97 years old and her best friend is 92. They still live independently and I can't remember when they didn't eat properly. To them fast food is a treat, not the norm. I commend the first lady for tackling this daunting task of trying to turn the eating habits of the young around.
"But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."
One of the disadvantages in discussing "what is wrong with America, is that Mr. Santorum has is he did not live through watching the American family of the 50s and 60s get torn apart by economic disasters brought upon the American public by failed GOP fiscal policies. A shrinking middle class, expanding working poor, unemployed, more tax cuts for the job creators, and the impossibility of mothers staying home with their children to teach and socialize them, as now families have to have two working parents to even begin to pay the bills on minimum wage, which some GOP members think are too high, and should be lowered to encourage Corporate America to begin hiring again.
Judeo-Christian ethic. Only the illiterate would believe this.
Sani, the Protestant reformation was freeing people from the tyrants in Rome!
People came to America in many cases to escape CHRISTIAN persecution
That was a Judeo-Christian nation that killed six million Jews
Our own constitution declared blacks less than a total person; Native Americans were "heathens" (because they were not Christian; and women were less than men. NO one in these three categories were given their "unalienable Rights."
Native Americans - because they were NOT Christian - were declared "savages" and/or "heathens" and therefore were expendable. Their holocost would follow.
Blacks were subjected to slavery for years with the sanction of the Christian church.
Jim Crowe laws went on for years and the "voter I.D. Laws" are surfacing now to keep them from voting.
Where is that Judeo-Christian equality Sani?
All of us liberals are behind St. Rick. We hope he wins all of the primary races, and emerges as the GOP nominee.
Why?
Because he's a religious fringe NUTJOB. Easy Meat for Obama. Slightly easier meat than Flip Flop RomneyCare, the Lib GOP'er!
You jokesters on the right might as well take your ball and go home. Try again in 2016.
If Don Imus can get fired for a racial slur about black women basketball players, then Rush should lose his show for directly calling a young woman a "slut" on national radio.
Time to end this idiocy. Everyone should email his employers and protest:

I swear that this Rick is even more ridiculous than the other one (Perry). How he has the support base that he does speaks volumes about the state of education in this country. Maybe that's why he's so against it.
I got an idea: If religious groups start involving themselves in our political process by wanting their beliefs to become public legislation then these groups should LOSE their tax exempt status. That oughta shut 'em up!

Stop socialized medicine! The biggest entitlement program is government employees. While you cut everything else, you always raise your share at the same time.

Rick Santorum, you only have two problems: 1) You are dishonest, and 2) You have no shame. Other than that, I guess you're okay. Maybe not.
When one is poor and living in a poor neighborhood one does not always have easy access to good foods. Bread stores selling cheap products often becomes the staple rather than fruits and vegetables. Lack of information on the part of the parents often contribute. To the child, a few candy bars or snack cakes that taste good and fills the belly is what they look for.
The reasons are simple to figure out, if you know about good foods.
Too often the poor are forgotten and neglected until it becomes a political issue.
Too long has inequality held sway, I'm glad to see people or starting to discuss it. Maybe this new age that has been much discussed will be the one where we finally help one another and reach out the way Jesus the Christ had laid out rather than using religious doctrine to further divide us.
Being "Christian" should mean we do as Christ preached: Loving your neighbor as thyself, giving aid to the poor, healing the sick as he did and rendering on to "Ceaser what is Ceaser's"
If you claim to be Catholic, the words of Christ were drilled into your head 24/7
I know other Christian churches preach Christlike values, I've heard them speak about it often.
so READ THEM. ADHERE TO THEM. instead of preaching what you think they should have been.
Jesus the Christ honored women.
Oh and do you remember that he said" it is easier for a camel to pass through the head of a needle than a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God"?
I don't think Jefferson would credit Christianity with the birth of equality and democratic ideals. One may identify that kind of progressive thinking in the life & actions of Jesus of Nazareth, but generally not in the institutional Church. St. Paul even offers to fairly radical thought when declaring that in Christ there is no male or female, no slave or freed, no Greek or Jew. But, the Church didn't exactly "live into" those notions. Santorum's understanding of the Christian Faith is dangerous to our country (and its constitution) and to Christianity itself. We are entering into dangerous times. Much hangs in the balance.
Unfortunately I would have to disagree with most of your comment.
Someone mentioned their 97 year old mom? good for them. My mom dancing to fast paced Latin music the night of her 80th birthday must take a back seat.
She starts every day with walking, eats lots of fruits, vegetables are usually cooked with the meat, and salads, always salads. BTW ladies, she doesn't have a single wrinkle. If she doesn't eat something, its because she's allergic and refuses to listen to food pundits that want to eliminate things from her diet.
She has rarely been sick.
The biggest Judeo Christian virtue is co-opting older ideas, practices and wisdom from other cultures and claiming that the Christians had the idea first and understand it best.
Equality does not have an owner or author-- it is a center point in any enlightened society. Be religious, be a believer--just don't claim that obvious beneficial traits/behaviors in a civilized society are gifts from, or exclusive to, your belief system.
Unfortunately, you are wrong....no need for me to explain why, it wouldn't make any difference.
About Christianity Co-opting other religions and practices, he isn't.

Socrates, no, you are wrong and there is ample evidence to prove you wrong, but as you said, it wouldn't make any difference if we posted page after page of it. To each his own beliefs, but there is history to consider as well.
Ample evidence for the title
