BOWLING GREEN, OH -- Rick Santorum riled up Ohio Republicans in back-to-back Lincoln Day dinner appearances with Newt Gingrich on Saturday, critiquing President Barack Obama for creating an America dependent on government and selling himself as the only conservative competing for the GOP presidential nomination.
“The problem with socialized medicine – socialized anything? It’s a narcotic," Santorum said. "You don’t even know what you’re missing. You don’t even see the dynamism of life, and the economy, because you’ve been given something for nothing, and you’re happy to have it. This is not us. We are different."
The thought gave way to a swipe at Mitt Romney.
"We need someone who can go into this election and draw a clear vision," he continued, "contrast a vision between a president who on every single issue believes in command and control."
While the former Pennsylvania senator has drawn criticism for focusing on social issues ahead of the economy, he did not back down from hitting on issues like religion and family.
At an earlier event, he took a veiled jab at the first lady and her campaign against childhood obesity. "We'll talk about childhood obesity until the cows come home," Santorum said. "But we won't talk about one of the great underlying causes of childhood obesity, which is the instability of the community, the neighborhood and the family."
Here, before a crowd of more than 600, Santorum said, “I love it because the left says, 'equality, equality.' Where does that concept come from? Does it come from Islam? Does it come from other cultures around the world? ... No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic. "
The speech earned Santorum a warm reception and four standing ovations, prompting him to joke, “If a speaker’s smart, when he gets a standing ovation like that, you stop.”
(Stop he didn’t; Santorum continued for another 15 minutes.)
The applause stood in contrast to former House Speaker Gingrich, who was politely received but won little of the enthusiasm the crowd awarded Santorum.
Gingrich reiterated his recent vows to deliver gas at $2.50 a gallon and declared Obama’s “left wing view” a “fantasy,” calling it expensive to the American people.
“I believe we have a chance, a very real chance,” Gingrich continued, to win a historic election of landslide proportions.
As Santorum was on stage Saturday night, news broke that Mitt Romney would win the Washington state caucus. Campaign advisers were hoping for a strong showing in the Pacific Northwest to grab some momentum going into Super Tuesday.
He'll stump in Tennessee and Oklahoma on Sunday, both states where polls show him in the lead heading into Tuesday. But he'll quickly return to the Buckeye State to campaign on Monday.
"No matter what the election, no matter when it is, Ohio is the key," said Santorum in Lima.

Moving away from the U.S to a country with socialized medicine has been amazing. No Health insurance bills, spent 6 nights in the hospital and left with ZERO bills. WHile in the U.S, it would have cost thousands even with health insurance. Remind me....why is socialized medicine a bad thing? This guy is a looney....maybe he should move to a country with socialized medicine so he can get his head checked. Also, hopefully one of his kids ends up being gay...maybe then...he will stop being racist and prejudiced.
certainly, that would give most people cause for reflection.
but, I'd expect that a rigid dogmatist like St. Santorum would see his kid's orientation as the evil work of Satan rather than regard it as a natural, and non-evil, even if not understood manifestation of God's creation, and would be more likely to tell the kid that he or she will burn in hell rather than just giving the loving acceptance that comes naturally to parents who are not blinded by religious bigotry.
and if it does happen, I'd hope for the kid's sake that my expectation is completely wrong.
Americans will never be free until the last member of the corporate oligarchy is strangled with the entrails of the last religious fanatic.
Denis would agree.
so, based on santorums equality comes from quote, he's another who is convinced that our country was founded as a christian country. another guy who is wrong-shocking to know santorum could be wrong on something!! his repeated, insistent injection of his religious views as a way to set policy is scary-almost as scary as knowing people are still supporting him.
as for his view on feminists, i'm glad there was a feminist movement. it fits right in with other groups seeking true equality. their strides didn't make women want to have a career-their triumphs allowed us freedom to choose our destiny. sorry rick and others have such an issue with that!
Let us talk about Catholics and how they vi...ew the gay society for the past 2000 years?
Let us talk about the Cursades.
Let us talk about it in the Bible shall we;
However, you may purchase male or female slaves from among the foreigners who live among you. You may also purchase the children of such resident foreigners, including those who have been born in your land. You may treat them as your property, passing them on to your children as a permanent inheritance. You may treat your slaves like this, but the people of Israel, your relatives, must never be treated this way. (Leviticus 25:44-46)
If you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve for only six years. Set him free in the seventh year, and he will owe you nothing for his freedom. If he was single when he became your slave and then married afterward, only he will go free in the seventh year. But if he was married before he became a slave, then his wife will be freed with him. If his master gave him a wife while he was a slave, and they had sons or daughters, then the man will be free in the seventh year, but his wife and children will still belong to his master. But the slave may plainly declare, 'I love my master, my wife, and my children. I would rather not go free.' If he does this, his master must present him before God. Then his master must take him to the door and publicly pierce his ear with an awl. After that, the slave will belong to his master forever. (Exodus 21:2-6)
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. But he is not allowed to sell her to foreigners, since he is the one who broke the contract with her. And if the slave girl's owner arranges for her to marry his son, he may no longer treat her as a slave girl, but he must treat her as his daughter. If he himself marries her and then takes another wife, he may not reduce her food or clothing or fail to sleep with her as his wife. If he fails in any of these three ways, she may leave as a free woman without making any payment. (Exodus 21:7-11)
I do remember this boat a while back called the Mayflower, somethng about people leaving religious persecution under the Church of England? I believe that was a Christian church.
RIGHT ON!! Its obvious that the bible is responsible for the strong hold that slavery had on the world for thousands of years. I wont even mention how the bible treats women!! and you christ-asses think the Muslims have it all wrong too? HA!
Santorum said -- Equality....
"No, it comes it comes from our culture and tradition, from the Judeo-Christian ethic."
Really? And then, slavery was enshrined in the US Constitution and buttressed by caselaw like Dredd Scott. States even seceded over the notion. Such crap.
"Irish need not apply", "white drinking fountain only", "women shouldn't vote".
Such bull -- and way to isolate every other person of faith in this nation.
So Urban cowboy please explain how the bible is responsible for slavery before the christian era in non jewish countries. I really want to hear that one. And please explain to this lowly Catholic how the know-nothing party in the US was right in trying to condemn Catholics while telling ridiculous stories about our beliefs which ended up in two things the deaths of a few Catholics and the building of the Catholic school system to protect our children from the rest of you.
lonereb..you do recall that there was a bible well before your alleged messiah conned the weak minded into thinking he was all that and a bag of falafal. As to evidence, i only replied to positrondave above me. I am a product of those very catholic schools you seem so proud of. They taught me that religion itself is a form of slavey as well. as to protecting the "children, who is protecting the children from the priests with pedo tendencies?
That's a laugh! A Republican talking about equality. This coming from the party that fights against equality! Just word from another freedom and rights stealing Republican. Watch out! He's actually talking about what he plans on taking away from you. Remember, they always speak out about an issue when they are about to step all over it.
Corporate Goal: Division through Religion. Perfect way to keep America divided while they divide up the money.
Hopefully lunatics don't get to be President. Santorum is way way out there and obviously knows little or nothing about History. This guy is not qualified to even be running for President. Doesn't the GOP have control over which horses they are going to put in the race??
He won't. He's too far to the right. He's a base runner is all.
James -
All I can think of is the rise of Hitler to power. The party has sold it's soul to the devil and now it is too late for reasonable people to regain control. The Brown Shirts=extremist conservatives=Rick S is in control.
He who fails to heed the lessons of history and experience is doomed to repeat it.
Exactly, and every nation which officially accepts atheism throws the notion of individual human rights into the trash can.
Socrates1 - that is your incorrect and unsubstantiated spin.
The prime reasons for human rights going into the trash can has to do with intolerance and arrogance, a characteristic of the dark side of human nature. There is plenty of blame to go around but there are good religious folks as well as bad religious folks and the same goes for none-believers. You can't paint everyone with a broad brush.
Not all liberals are on welfare or shop at Wal Mart and not all conservatives are religious nut balls. Our problems these days are more the fault of extremism, lack of honesty, lack of reasonableness and greed (right and left).
This articles and the issues related to this political season has to do with the current slate of republican hopefuls and Santorum. From my point of view this man is an extremist and a very very dangerous individual.
Socrates,
(Loved your tour of Greece, btw. Sorry about the poison thing)
I hate to nit-pick, but you forgot to space between the 'a' and 'Theism'.
LOL! Kind'a makes it sound like you think nations that don't follow a particular religious belief give up on human rights. I'm sure it was a mistake.
Every atheistic nation......no mistake.
So..., Nations that ARE theistic (Belief in the existence of a god or gods, especially belief in a personal God as creator and ruler of the world.), are exemplary upholders of Human Rights. Right?
Including all those various theistic nations collectively known as the 'Middle East'?
Or, do you mean that, only those nations that accept the belief of only your version of god, have, and value Human Rights?
Emphasis mine, to illustrate how your statement can be true without actually saying what you think it does. A nation can be atheistic the way the U.S. is Christian without taking any position at all on individual human rights. Dictatorships that made atheism a matter of state mandate were "atheistic" the way medieval Europe was Christian, or the way Tibet was Buddhist--that is to say, it was an atheocracy; it's proper point of comparison, if we're to follow your inference to its logical ends, is not the U.S., but the theocracy of your choice.
Sol....I have to congratulate you on your apparent realization that all religions don't preach the same things.
Pretty close, or have been influenced by it.
thel
You'll note I was very specific, and thus said exactly what I meant it to say.
You'll also note that those are also the only nations where atheists were in power and thus made the point of officially recognizing atheism, to the detriment of others. I reject your suggestion that the comparison is not apt with the United States, as it is still the residual theology of Christainity which still governs us. When that tips the other way, there will be no turning back.
That you were specific, I don't question. But what you specifically said doesn't mean, specifically, what you seem to think it does. Official recognition of atheism isn't particularly desirable, but neither is official recognition of any metaphysical construct (or any formalized absence of same).
I doubt that illustrates, however, that they were unique in having atheists in power; what was unique is that they made atheism a matter of policy.
Rejection is not refutation; it's just a way to avoid argument. I suppose I shall thank you for saving me the time I might have wasted on the topic.
As almost always Santorums misunderstanding of our traditions are confused with some mishmash of religious ideas which drive his underseanding of all things. The underpinnings of our philosophy of govenance come directly from the philosophies and ideas arising from the Enlightenment. The Enlightenment is the polar opposite of govenance through religious belief. It is also known as The Age of Reason and it stresses science and the use of mans intellect in choosing his own course and decries the idea of Divine Intervention in the day to day lives of man. It sought a complete separation of church and state and was the basis of the Constitution and all of our institutions of government.
Jefferson, Franklin , Madison, Washington, Adams and Paine were the most prominent and all but Washington were self described Deists or Atheists and Washingtons interest in religion being mild at best. Washington was a prominent Mason and believer that mans intellect should guide all decisions. We were founded on a combination of liberalism and republicanism neither of which have their basis in God. Jeffersons' bible distributed to Congress for 50 years as a philosophical guide had all references to the Divinity of Christ, miracles, winged angels, demons, Ressurection, heaven and hell and all things he viewed as fantasy and myth removed and he presented Christianity as a philosophy of living and not a religion.
I have no idea what it is that Santorum practices but it bears absolutely no relationship to Catholicism which teaches respect and tolerance for the beliefs of others and that government must be an engine for change and social justice. There are twelve encyclicals on Social Justice and the role of the state and Santorum is in accordance on ONLY those issues dealing with procreation and his positions line up with only the most rigid doctrinaires who are defining sin for the members of their religion not driving a jihad against the beliefs of others. His practice of religion is far closer to the tent show snake handlers like Dobson, Robertson et al and bears little resemblance to Catholicism which teaches a doctrine of forgiveness and redemption and categorically states that those who choose to interpret the bible literally are in errror and in danger of making grave religious error.
jkh
Someone should tell Santorum that if he wants to run for "pastor of the year", he should go out and compete with someone like Rick Warren ... and not try to win the White House on his religious convictions or deceptively push religion into government. The people want ethical, moral and legal government but all should recognize the problems, like in Iran, Saudi Arabia, other middle-east countries and even historically in England and throughout Europe, that religiously dominated government is a catastrophe ... one that America correctly escaped. No religion, not Christianity or any other, can escape the problems and the option of religion, religion or no religion or which religion, should be kept as an individual choice to maintain America's basic freedoms and avoid the problems seen in other countries. It is simply common sense that should not be disguised with emotionally pious propaganda ... and definitely not accepted as meaningful political campaigning.
Funny thing about all this is how it's completely made people forget about the bizarre stuff that Mormons believe it. Don't worry Mitt, we'll get back to you and your magic underwear soon!
Glad I'm not a member of what Santorum considers "Christianity"...I have never seen such a misogynist talk about equality in my life...HYPOCRITE..Glad Santorum only has only 17 delegates as well, we may be saved from more of his "Christian" hatred of women. Santorum's campaign states he is defending those stay at home moms who feel belittled for their role in society. As a woman who helps instruct homeschoolers I personally have NEVER condemned a woman for her choices in life, every woman has a right to be respected until they condemn another woman for their choices. Even Sarah Palin said during her campaign for VP; "I have never seen such sexism as I've seen throughout America. In Alaska a woman can fly a plane, hunt and have a career with no one noticing"...Maybe Santorum's campaign should remember that Palin speech as well.
Rick Santorum is not qualified to run a Burger King, let alone our nation.
He is an extreme right wing whackjob whose personal views are CLEARLY misogynistic and bigoted, and religiously opressive, and he wants to bring all that "back to America".
Ah the Republican party .... building a bridge to the 16th Century.
If Rick Santorum becomes President of the United States, I'm moving to Europe. Period.
While I agree with you statement, I'm moving to someplace a bit warmer. I'm thinking the Bahamas
Can I just say that as a European if Rick Santorum wins, then I’m staying in Europe lol
Although come to think of it the Bahamas does sound nice
Its warm there but please learn to listen when they say hurricane coming there is nowhere to go once the flights stop. And learn where the 20 foot line is it might save your life.
Hmmm I think that if given the choice between a hurricane or Rick Santorum then the hurricane would be less of a disaster lol
But seriously I know foreign policy isn’t exactly high on the agenda right now but please keep in mind that whoever does win has to work with us Europeans (for better or worse) and so far from what I’ve seen Mr Santorum doesn’t seem to want to do anything but insult or proclaim American superiority over the rest of us
Equality is a "Christian Ethic"-------Oh, really-----what happened to the history of persecution of Jews and other minorities, reducing them to second class citizens, by Christians over the milleniums??????????
This is what the Republican GOP thinks of Equality.
Tax Cuts Offer Most for Very Rich, Study Says
WASHINGTON, Jan. 7, 2007 — Families earning more than $1 million a year saw their federal tax rates drop more sharply than any group in the country as a result of President Bush's tax cuts, according to a new Congressional study.

Wealth Gap Is Increasing, Study Shows
The rich really are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer, a new University of Michigan study shows. Rising inequality isn't new. But what happened under Bush is something entirely unprecedented: For the FIRST time in our history, so much growth is being siphoned off to a small, wealthy minority that most Americans are failing to gain ground even during a time of economic growth -- and they know it.http://tinyurl.com/49jj89
The GOP’s Intellectual Dishonesty Regarding Bush Tax Cuts
Republicans say that tax cuts for the wealthy must be extended to protect the economy and small businesses, even though neither would be affected by their lapse.

Santorum keeps talking equality, unfortunately he is using his equality a lot more than others based on his usual dumb statements which usally need to be restated or modified every day.
Religion is not a bad thing religion is what you make of it.Santorum has twisted it into something that only benifits Rick Santorum and nobody else
Apparently Rick Santorum's Bible (as well as many of the whackadoos in the audience who gave him a standing ovation) doesn't include the parts about slavery being o.k., about selling your children, subjugating women, and on and on.
Either that or Rick Santorum hasn't actually read The Bible.
Say Rick, one of my Soldiers insists on working on Sunday. Should I have him stoned to death?
The Bible says we shouldn't touch the flesh of pigs, so can Notre Dame still play football against the U.S. Military Academy if they all wear gloves?
The best evidence for atheism remains The Holy Bible.
If you actually think a football is made of pigskin please join the modern sports era. And if you were as smart as you claim you would also have read the new testament where it says no animal is unclean. But gee that wouldn't be a zinger would it. Lord save me from people who quote the bible to prove points.
I'm not a theologian, but i don't think history would support santorum's view that Jewish/Christian views supported women's rights historically or even currently. from a religious standpoint women have been second class citizens from the start and that seems true of the views of all the big religions. santorum's own views speak for themselves: states should be able to outlaw birth control, even though hundreds of women have been killed in combat they are not emotionally suited to it, women should be only homemakers, college is no good not only for women but for no one, women should not have sex (except for procreation reasons), there are many more examples. my guess is that santorum supports Limbaugh's views (4 marriages in so many years) of women entirely.
"Judeo-Christian Values"... Equality? Then GAWD should be all against the idea of one owning another of his "equals", yes? What DOES the Bible say about SLAVERY, eh?
Christians who are slaves should give their masters full respect so that the name of God and his teaching will not be shamed. If your master is a Christian, that is no excuse for being disrespectful. You should work all the harder because you are helping another believer by your efforts. Teach these truths, Timothy, and encourage everyone to obey them. (1 Timothy 6:1-2 NLT)
Or...
(Leviticus 25:44-46 NLT)
And if you're having trouble getting your daughter married off to a Venture Capitalist...
When a man sells his daughter as a slave, she will not be freed at the end of six years as the men are. If she does not please the man who bought her, he may allow her to be bought back again. And I think High Fructose Corn Sweetener may be more of a factor in childhood obesity than "instability in the Family", which is Dominionist code for "Single Parents on TANF"
ghastly
Forgive my ignorance, but what is TANF?
TNAF= Temporary Assistance for Needy Families. It is the new name for AFDC(Aid to Families with Dependent Children), the federally funded welfare program.
Yeah well the brown rice sweetener you health foods nut s have pushed as its replacement has arsenic in it. Real healthy there especially since you pushed it into baby food.
Oh yeah...we all know how religions view equality...believe as we do or die!
Once again I see reasons to just cancel the elections till someone comes up with anyone with a brain. If that doesn't happen well then we will just have more of what we just had and this once great country is going to die a painful death at the hands of morons.
Yea, that is what I said...cancel the elections and just give Mr. Obama another 4 years.
Obama 2012!
It would be much less embarrassing for the Republcans, you know.
Equality of men as a concept is most originally from ancient Greece, a pagan society. You are wrong again, Ricky boy. Christianity generally opposed the idea of equality throughout it's history. Even today, the Catholic Church denies the priesthood to women. Christian ministers justified slavery, inequality of women, economic exploitation. Some Christians have taken up the cause of equality, but they are the exceptions, and are late comers to that concept, which was revived in the modern era by the philosophes of the 18th century enlightenment, who were mostly agnostic or atheist.
Santorum wants to be the NEW SHERIFF in Town.
http://youtube/lSRSHUGOOn4
Unless you are a member of the right-wing buffoonery.
The "equality" is for those people who can afford to purchase it.
I found a Santorum portrait in my underwear after I blew a wet fart. I wonder if anyone would buy them on ebay?
I have posted some very inflammatory junk on here just to get responses. But in all honesty, the Republican party is in my opinion one of the most hipocritical entities out there. They espouse family values, Godliness, etc. etc., but are constantly being caught in situations that are 180 degrees out of what they preach. Who are they to tell me whom I can love, worship, or what I do with my life so long as it does'nt hurt them? To you Republican on here, if you actually tried to live your life the way you preach to everyone else, this world could be a much better place to live. Clean your own house before you point out the dirt in mine.
And just for the record, I am affiliated with no political party. I think for myself. Good day to all of you.
ratranger - there are a few good republicans out there (i.e.: Olympia Snowe) but like cancer or the Hitler Brown shirts the extremists have invaded, infiltrated the ranks of the party and will not tolerate dissent.
I was a republican until 2009 and shifted to being an Independent for the above reason. We all should be afraid of people like Rick, if by chance they should ever gain power we may never get it back without a civil war.
Oh no- It was not my intent to state that all Republicans are in the same basket. My only issue regards ALL political parties. Let me live my life as I see fit so long as no laws are being broken. Do not tell me whom I can love, where or what I should worship, or what I can eat. Personally, I do not believe in abortion excepting for extinuating circumstances, i.e., rape, incest, or health reasons. But that is MY belief. It is not my place to tell others what they must do, say, or believe. If you believe, or do not believe something, then stand by your convictions, but don't try to shove them down my throat. All that will happen is I will vomit them out and get pissed off at you. The biggest problem with society today is that everyone is so hung up on what everyone else is doing.
PEOPLE, MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS! IT IS MY BODY, MY LIFE, AND MY THOUGHT PROCESS!
ratranger - I generally agree with you as long as we as a society recognize that there are reasonable limits to what we can do and say.
I could not agree with you more on the current state of the republican party. The hipocracy exist because of their selfishness (my way is right your's is wrong), arrogance (refusal to consider others points of view) and frankly their inability to think reasonably. The party has been hijacked by extremists whose thinking is (per GWB) you are either with us or against us.
if what santorum says is true, then child molesters came from the judeo christian beliefs as well. look at the catholic chursh, they all were involved directly or by allowing it to go on. must be a christian value
