Santorum in Ohio: President must stop apologizing for America

WILLOUGHBY, OH -- Rick Santorum says President Barack Obama has failed to support the U.S. troops and has weakened the military.

"This president has got to stop apologizing for America," Santorum said during an address to 600 Ohio Republicans at a Lincoln Day Dinner here Friday night.  "His gut reaction is always to blame us, to blame our men and women in uniform.  Stop it, Mr. President.  Stand up for our troops.  Stand up for this country."

The former Pennsylvania senator argued that Obama has slashed defense spending while creating new entitlement programs like the health care legislation passed in 2010. He said the president is striving to create an America dependent on the government.

Many have attributed Santorum's second-place finish in the Michigan primary to his fiery rhetoric on the campaign trail. He called the president "a snob" for calling on all Americans to seek higher education, and questioned the president's religious beliefs.

On CNN on Friday, Santorum seemed to acknowledge that the snob comment was over the line, saying "It was a strong term, probably not the smartest thing."

But Friday night, he again went into territory that had drawn criticism from the left and head scratching from some on the right.

"I've gotten some grief in the media lately because, well, I'm a little bit too passionate; I say things that sometimes offend people -- that I talk about government dictating to us and suggested that might not be, you know, a little snobbish for people to do that," Santorum said. "Or I talk about how we have to have traditional values in this country and respect for the dignity of human life and the respect for freedom of religion in this country."

Santorum will spend plenty of time in the Buckeye State leading up to Super Tuesday. Holding the most delegates of all the states voting on March 6, it is largely seen as the state that Santorum needs to win in order to still be considered a top contender for the GOP nomination

"When Ohio whispers, people listen.  When Ohio shouts 'We want a conservative,' this country will stand up and join you," he said.

In taking care of their service men and women and citizens abroad, our President and any President anywhere in the world - must exercise diplomacy, as their first and least response to international events.

This President and First Lady are looking out for American military folks and their families in every single possible way.

One Admiral described President Obama as making military decisions like someone who has been in the military for 35 years.

President Bush's Old Boys did serious & dangerous damage to America's international reputation.

This President and his Administration have brought back dramatically the USA's reputation and esteem - around the world.

Someone should ask Osama bin Laden if he thinks President Obama has weakened the military.

I feel this way I have no earthly master or mistress and no damn king or queen. Please quit bowing to people I wouldn't bow to and please quit apologising. A nice little head nod to the lady in London just to be polite will do she is after all older than he is. But do not bow we revolted against her regime remember. He represents me and I would neither apologise nor bow.

Santorum wants it both ways. He does not want the government dictating something unless it is the republicans dictating about unnecessary ultra-sounds.

Just because extremely conservative Mississippi didn't pass the person-hood amendment by a large margin, it didn't stop Virginia republicans from trying to push the religious law on the people without their consent.

This is the same religious law that good old Rick is pushing too. Rick thinks the church should be in charge of the government and laws should be passed to make us all adhear to his Catholic Doctrine. He has admitted it makes him sick to his stomach to think about having to follow the constitution as written with separation of church and state.

I find I am pulled two ways too, part of me wants Santorum to win the nomination and the other part of me fears him winning the nomination as that means there are that many religious zealots out there who wants to run my life instead of theirs.

I pray for the day the republicans begin to believe in the constitution again, especially the church/state separation part.

The Republican Party is in huge disarray. They cannot find suitable candidates to be President..so any politician who can afford to run takes the podium. We have Santorium who heeds to the Catholic doctrine as his playbook for government. WOW!

How far right can they go????

I would like to run my own life thank you!

About as far as they've gone. They're reaching the end game of their constant pandering to an evermore radical fringe, and the disintegration of the Conservative coalition has begun.

He!! the GOP can't even get their own voting polls right. Just about every state that has have primary elections have had problems. Maine, Mich, Florida, etc. They can't do anything right.

Now they want to ban the "PILL". My wife never use it, but I always through the "PILL" also helped or relived a woman's monthly "PERIOD". If is does, why won't any MARRIED or even single guy not want their woman to have some relief from her monthly "PERIOD". DUMB AND DUMBER.

Well cross your fingers it seems most of the people complaining about Texas redistricting are finally happy. Of course one minority is happy and the other isn't so no bets on the primary date standing as yet. We it seems will be (crossed fingers) the last state to vote before the primary. I expect the circus to descend on us like locusts right after super Tuesday. If they mess with this anymore anyone know of a lawyer who wants to go to federal court in my name to sue for loss of my voting rights.

LOL...GAFB...what bull@!$%# this is...all this is telling me is that virtually EVERY right-wing conservative website carried the story, but NOTHING in the MSM? I call bull@!$%#.

Even the Carolina Journal can't seem to substantiate the story...suddenly nobody knows nothing, and the mother wants to "remain anonymous".

James, don't you think if this REALLY happened as outlined in the Carolina Journal story, every conservative politician BESIDES that nutsack Tancredo would be all over it?

Could it be that what REALLY happened is that this was an isolated incident, and an OVERREACTION by this teacher?

Nahhh...couldn't possibly be that..it's GOTTA be some conspiracy....so, James, if you want to waste your time on bull@!$%# conspiracies, go right ahead.

Yeah it was covered by the local radio station also two weeks ago, the radio station also went one step further and had a teacher from a school district in Michigan on claiming that they, the teachers are trained and know better than the parents about what is good for your children. Parents WANT what is good, Teachers KNOW what is good, when she is questioned her about the implications, she the teacher doubles down on her statements.

mickey -- went back to the Carolina Journal and indeed they have made some changes to the story. the reporter may have overstated or simply chosen the wrong words. i don't see any conspiracy here but you are welcome to your opinion.

while i am still concerned about government intrusion -- from both the right and the left -- this may not have been the best example i could have chosen. i am sorry for that.

based on your response it is not clear if you are always a rude, judgmental, cussing screamer at folks with whom you disagree or if your rant was an isolated incident of overreaction.

if the former, then you clearly fit in well at this site, if not, then maybe a more civil exchange awaits us in the future.

"The former Pennsylvania senator argued that Obama has slashed defense spending..."

What? The United States spends as much on its military budget as the rest of the world combined. That religious extremist and hate-monger Santorum is lying yet again. He is heading back to the dark void of political obscurity soon, but not soon enough for normal Americans.

There have been no military budgets slashed yet, and per the constitution, congress determines the budget. Obama, therefore could not unilaterally slash any budget.

            james,

Budgets do not control spending, spending bill do !!

Congress, just before Christmas, passed the Defense Authorization Bill that, once again, increased spending for our Department of Defense. Our President did not veto the bill, he signed it into law.

Should the President have apologized? No he should not have. The Commanding General had already apologized. Further, the burning of the Korans was not a DELIBERATE attack on the Muslims religious. The prisoners were using the Korans for illegal and banned purposes and someone, I would assume and officer, made the decision to burn them along with other books.

What do the Muslims do when the Koran is no longer usable, how do they properly destroy it? I am sure if the military had known the proper method of destroying the Koran, if no longer usable, they would have. Again it was not a deliberate act or done in disrespect to Islam, therefore, no apologize by the President was necessary. I heard President Obama comment that his apology calmed the situation, then it was announced that two more American soldiers had been killed by their Afghan counterparts.

I have not yet heard an apology from the Afghan Government about the death of the American Soldiers, nor have I heard President Obama ask for one. The whole purpose of going into Afghanistan was to kill or capture OBL. That has been accomplished and now it is time to leave that God forsaken country as fast as possible. The U.S. is not good at nation building.

We have been in that part of the world for a decade or more and we haven't bothered to ask how one should handle an old copy of the Qoran? If we didn't ask we need to apologize from the top down for being so lax in our understanding of our friends as well as our enemies in Afghanistan, Iraq and the rest of the Muslim world. By the way, the proper way to dispose of a Qoran is to bury it with due respect and circumstance or to put it into flowing water. How many more American lives have to be lost because the Muslims are upset by this. At least an apology lets them know we care and respect them and their religion. Not every Muslim is a terrorist or wants the end to America.

How do you like it when someone improperly handles the American flag or if they would burn the Bible? You wouldn't like it at all would you? Nor would I but there are diplomatic ways to handle these problems. We can't bully the world into being "just like us".

Since I think we got Bin Laden now f--k them we should not have apologised we should not be paying for Karzai's security we should bring our troops home the job is done. Or do you want to still have troops there like we do in Germany, Italy, Japan 67 years after the surrender and Korea 59 years after the last shot of that war. When does it stop?

bald -- i do not remember any stories of people not involved in a American flag incident being murdered in cold blood.

you seem to be saying that it is OK to murder if your religious book is disrespected.

is that what you are saying?

James - Apples to apples, my friend: I do not remember a foreign nation invading and occupying our country, then burning our bible.

As a peacenik liberal non-christian, I think I'd be considering the old Mossberg 12-guage shotgun in my closet as an appropriate response to a foreign enemy burning the bible in the streets of America. Sorry to hear you wouldn't be interested in defending our country or its religious freedom in that case.

Somehow to ease tensions and try to make things right a real man apologizes anyway. It is the right thing to do. Man up Ricky, man up. 'Nuf said.

                  Our president

Principles conscience honesty is it way to much to ask for people to be responsible enough to get a job and make their way thru life by the fruits of their own labor. or is it to late for that since they have been told so much that they are victim's of the cruel establishment and have virtually given up and deem it pointless to even try to succeed. yet lets squeeze out another baby, and let the baby daddy off the hook and go on welfare three or six or eight times possibly if this country had more people working we could afford and tolerate these pets, if they would wash their crotch and behind their ears stay off drugs and teach their kids the same. but NO we apparently love this enslaved dependency class for their vote if in fact they can get off the c-pipe long enough to do so. perhaps we can get the president to mandate "professional welfare recipient" drug testing every 3 or 4 months or maybe he should mandate( i mean forget passing a bill in to law ) that p.w.r.'s must work for their sty-pen possibly form another czar position and an entire sub bureaucracy under health an human services to regulate and control p.w.r.with the work hard incentive program W.H.I.P. would this give them an incentive to maybe get a private sector set of skills? and move up from their babysitting and 1000 diaper changes a week job for the Gov't... idle hands are the devils workshop. or how about picking up trash on the side of the road under D.O.T. czar hell I bet we could all work for the gov't some could whip and some could work oh wait strike that we already tried that 150 years ago they put a stop to that in this country however it is still in existence else where in this world i guess we joined the enlightened ones I don't know JUST SAYING
