First Thoughts: It's good to be the incumbent president

It’s good to be the king, and it’s good to be the incumbent president… Obama previews his message to AIPAC: Israel, don’t worry… Ohio primary race is close, per new poll… GOP state party snafus have all seemed to benefit Romney… Romney leaves no caucus contest to chance… Oppo drop: Romney, back in ’02, touted Washington connections and a desire for federal funds… NBC’s Top 10 Senate takeovers… And “Meet” has Gingrich, Cantor, and Wasserman Schultz.

*** It’s good to be the incumbent president: As Mel Brooks said in “History of the World: Part I,” it’s good to be the king. And it’s also good to be an incumbent president running for re-election (and not facing a primary challenge). As the Republican presidential candidates were battling over contraception, each other’s records, and single delegate in Michigan, note the visual contrast that President Obama was able to present this week. He hosted a White House dinner honoring the troops returning from the Iraq war. He gave a free-wheeling interview to ESPN’s Bill Simmons, showing off his “I’m just like an average sports fan” knowledge. He talked energy in the battleground state of New Hampshire, even inspecting engines. And he attended more fundraisers, raking in more cash to use in the general election. In fact, at one of them, Obama bluntly stated that he was going to use the GOP primary debates against his eventual opponent. “I recommend you watch the recent debates. I'm thinking about just running those as advertisements. Without commentary; here you go. This is what they said awhile back.” It’s contrasts like these that have so many Republicans wringing their hands over Romney’s inability to close the deal. They believe this primary fight is only strengthening the president and allowing him too many unchallenged weeks. It’s a long way to go for the president, but March is beginning the way February ended for him.

*** Obama: Israel, don’t worry: Still, there are plenty of issues that could pop up and hurt the president or change the narrative in a flash. And a big one that could be coming up is Iran. And in an interview with the Atlantic’s Jeffrey Goldberg, Obama seemed to preview what he’ll say about Iran at AIPAC’s conference on Sunday. The message: Israel, don’t worry. “What I've emphasized is that preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon isn't just in the interest of Israel, it is profoundly in the security interests of the United States, and that when I say we're not taking any option off the table, we mean it. We are going to continue to apply pressure until Iran takes a different course.” More Obama: “I think that the Israeli government recognizes that, as president of the United States, I don't bluff.” But challenge for Obama and Netanyahu, as the New York Times notes, is that neither leader really trusts one another. Still, it seems pretty clear that Pres. Obama plans to do a little bit of sabre-rattling at AIPAC, if that’s what it takes to get Netanyahu to back down from his threats.

*** It’s close in Ohio: Turning to the GOP primary race, a Quinnipiac poll taken after Tuesday’s contests in Arizona and Michigan, shows Santorum getting support from 35% of likely Republican voters in Ohio, while Romney gets 31%. They’re followed by Gingrich at 17% and Paul at 12%. In an Ohio Quinnipiac taken before Tuesday’s races, it was Santorum 36%, Romney 29%. The new poll was conducted Feb. 29-March 1, and it has a margin of error of plus-minus 4.3 percentage points. By the way, there will be an NBC/Marist poll of Ohio (as well as Virginia) coming out on Sunday morning on “Meet the Press.” And the next NBC/WSJ national poll debuts Monday morning on the “TODAY Show.”

*** GOP state party snafus all have benefited Romney: As we wrote yesterday, the Michigan Republican Party voted Wednesday night to award its two at-large delegates to the statewide winner instead of dividing up proportionally, as we (and even the Michigan GOP chairman at one time) had assumed. That move gave Romney a 16-14 delegate edge in the state instead of a 15-15 tie, and it has produced a firestorm of controversy. What’s more, it’s the latest GOP state party snafu this primary season that’s benefited Romney. Consider: The Iowa Republican Party originally declared Romney the winner there (and even once the vote count had changed, it was hesitant to declare Santorum the new winner). In addition, the Maine GOP badly mishandled its caucuses (one county wasn’t counted due to snow, other results got lost in a spam folder), and Romney narrowly won that contest. And now you have the delegate drama in Michigan, which now allows Romney to claim a win there in both the popular vote and delegate count.

*** Leaving no caucus contest behind: It’s worth noting that Romney is now leaving no caucus contest to chance. He’s spending today in Washington state, whose contest on Saturday awards no delegates (at least not yet). And yesterday, he was in the Super Tuesday states of Idaho and North Dakota, which also are holding caucuses. Pre-Colorado, we’re betting Romney’s schedule today would have been Ohio and Tennessee, leaving the caucus states to surrogates.

*** Oppo drop: Romney once touted Washington connections, desire to get federal funds: After Romney has blasted his GOP rivals -- notably Santorum -- for their ties to Washington and their hunt for federal earmarks, don’t be surprised if they try to turn the tables with this news from ABC: “In a long-forgotten tape from the 2002 Massachusetts governor’s race obtained by ABC News, Mitt Romney is seen touting his Washington connections and his ability to get millions of taxpayer dollars from the federal government. ‘I am big believer in getting money where the money is,’ Romney says on the video, ‘The money is in Washington.’ The video, which was surreptitiously shot by Democratic opponents of Romney on Oct. 16, 2002, shows him addressing a group called the New Bedford Industrial Foundation. The Power Point presentation he uses lists ways to improve economic development in Massachusetts, including ‘boost federal involvement.’ ‘I want to go after every grant, every project, every department in Washington to assure that we are taking advantage of economic development opportunities,’ Romney tells the group.”

*** On the trail, per NBC’s Adam Perez: Gingrich remains in Georgia, making stops in Savannah, Brunswick, Valdosta and Columbus…Romney holds a meet-and-greet in Bellevue, WA then hosts a rally (with his wife, Ann) in Cleveland, OH… Santorum visits the Buckeye State, hosting events in Chillicothe and Willoughby… And Paul continues to campaign in Washington, attending town hall meetings in Spokane, Ridgefield and Seattle.

*** Top 10 Senate takeovers: Earlier this week, we wrote that Olympia Snowe’s (R-ME) announcement she won’t be seeking re-election this year gives Democrats better than a 50%-50% chance of retaining control of the Senate. And with Bob Kerrey’s (D) decision to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Ben Nelson (D-NE), we’ve updated our Top 10 Senate takeover list.

1. ME (R-Open): Lean D
2. ND (D-Open): Lean R
3. NE (D-Open): Lean R
4. MO (D-McCaskill): Toss-up
5. MT (D-Tester): Toss-up
6. VA (D-Open): Toss-up
7. MA (R-Brown): Toss-up
8. WI (D-Open): Toss-up
9. NM (D-Open): Toss-up
10. NV (R-Heller): Toss-up

It’s also remarkable all the potentially good races that aren’t in our Top 10: OH, MI, FL, AZ, HI. Nearly half of all the senate seats up in 2012 are likely to be competitive.

*** On “Meet the Press” this Sunday: NBC’s David Gregory interviews Newt Gingrich, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, and DNC Chair Wasserman Schultz.

Exxon Mobil is the world's largest oil company.
The prediction on Exxon revenues in 2012 is $450 Billion. Prediction on earnings is $28 Billion. At the same time, Exxon receives $millions in taxpayer subsidies from the IRS.

NBC/WSJ polls in 2011 showed 3 out of 4 Americans favored "eliminating tax credits for the oil and gas industries". Now President Obama is calling on Congress again, to end the $4 Billion in oil and gas tax breaks = $41 billion over the next decade.

The Political Economy Research Institute "ranks ExxonMobil sixth among corporations emitting airborne pollutants in the United States."

We end up subsidizing big oil companies to pollute our air and rivers. This gives our children cancer and asthma! We naively hand them $4 Billion a year on an acid rain platter, to hurt our bodies and our planet.

"In 2005, ExxonMobil had committed less than 1% of their profits towards researching alternative energy, less than other leading oil companies."

2002-2008 federal subsidies: Fossil fuels, 72.5 Billion; Traditional renewables, 12.2 Billion. No wonder we are crying out for a new, ALL-OF-THE-ABOVE-APPROACH to America's energy future.

When are the GNOP powers that be, going to come out and denounce the pathetic excuse of a human being & certified misogynist , Rush Limpballs?

I hope Ms. Fluke has an excellent attorney and sues his fat white ass off!

Just think how much better off America would be if Barry devoted as much time to actually doing the work of being the President as he does being the Campaigner in Chief.

Hell, America might be at a 4% unemployment rate, with the economy growing at 4-5% a year if he was actually DOING his job instead of spending all his time running for its second term.

From Politico:

Obama hits 100th fundraiser

President Barack Obama snaked through New York City Thursday evening, hitting four fundraisers, raking in more than $5 million for his reelection bid and reaching a notable milestone.

The last event, at the home of interior decorator Michael Smith, marked the president’s 100th fundraiser since kicking off his campaign last April, according to Mark Knoller of CBS News.

It was a marker relished by Republicans, who held it up as proof that Obama is spending too much time fundraising and not enough time governing. Former president George W. Bush had only done half as many – 49 – at the same point in his presidency.

Here's some fabulous Friday fodder. Ruminate on this over the weekend. This is a clip from FOX that is the visual and audio equivalent of a smack upside the head with a two-by-four.

FOX has given us some serious food for thought, but of course, for all the wrong reasons. Their world-class insipid shill, Steve Doocy is determined to put the Fox spin on this interview. Needless to say, he is as ignorant as the students who are highlighted in this piece.

Prepare to be floored: http://www.youtube.com/watch_popup?v=VxHfYNTrnic

Mind you, the featured students are sophomores and have little in the way of real-world experience. However, while Doocy desperately wants to blame this on some sort of liberal failure, he couldn't be more off the mark. The professor politely disabuses him, but is himself off the mark, when he points to public education as the culprit.

Please keep in mind, a child's primary learning occurs in two fairly clearly delineated time periods. The first occurs from birth to about the age of five. The primary teachers during that period are PARENTS. Public education is not even in the picture yet. The second period obviously begins at the end of the first and continues approximately to the age of 12. After that, it's about adding to the basics the kids have learned. There it is.

The failure to educate clearly is in the home. Not the schools. It is not to be laid at the feet of incompetent school teachers and their evil unions. It's not some overarching liberal government conspiracy.

During a school year, a student will be with a teacher about one in every eight to ten hours. That's it. The rest of the time, 80-90% is spent with parents or their guardians. The kids may not be with their parents, but where those kids are is certainly the responsibility of the parents.

So, where do you suppose these kids get this sense of entitlement? Where do you suppose these kids learned that they aren't responsible for their lives? Why do you suppose they think there really is a free lunch? Why do you suppose there is still such a huge group in our population that thinks a god is the answer to everything they can't figure out?

Where is that "traditional family" we keep hearing about?

George Will is right on point with this upcoming column. It’s far more important for the country that the Republican’s control Congress rather than winning the WH. Let Barry sit around in the WH whining about his lefty liberal policies being shoved aside for the good of the country. Will sums it up in this sentence:

[A] re-elected Obama — a lame duck at noon next Jan. 20 — would have a substantially reduced capacity to do harm,” he says.

BTW, I do disagree with Will on one point: Barry, if he gets re-elected on 11/06/12, is a lame duck on11/07/12, not 01/20/13.

From Politico:

George Will: Take Congress, not W.H.
By: Tim Mak
March 2, 2012 08:33 AM EST

Columnist George Will says the 2012 presidential looks like it might be a lost cause for Republicans and believes that the primary goal of conservatives should be to retain control of the House and win the Senate so Congress can restrain President Barack Obama while the GOP grooms its talent for 2016.

“Romney and Rick Santorum… are conservatives, although of strikingly different stripes. Neither, however, seems likely to be elected… If either is nominated, conservatives should vote for him,” Will writes in his upcoming Sunday column, obtained in advance by POLITICO Playbook by Mike Allen.

However, Will argues, that control of both house of Congress is more attainable and more important.

“[T]here would come a point when… conservatives turn their energies to a goal much more attainable than… electing Romney or Santorum president. It is the goal of retaining control of the House and winning control of the Senate.. [C]onservatives this year should have as their primary goal making sure Republicans wield all the gavels in Congress in 2013,” writes Will.

What has happened to MSNBC?!?! There was a time I both valued and enjoyed the Chris Matthews show and others, but in the last few years it has gone so far left that it scares me. I loved the days of Tim Russert, a true journalist who never took sides and reported the news and asked the tough questions. You were sure when tuned in on Sunday mornings for "Meet The Press" you would get fair and balanced reporting. David Gregory does try and does ask the tough questions but its hard to become neutral when you came from the left and try to be in the center. Now these shows like O'Donald, Maddow, Matthews, and the preacher, I mean really, there was a time when no one would touch Sharpton, now MSNBC should simply changes it call signal to OBAMA 2012 re-election headquarters. MSNBC is as bad as FOX far right - far left, what happen to reporting the news and keeping your personal opinions to yourself, you never knew who Tim Russert was voting for, it almost makes Oberman's firing a farce, the only difference with Oberman was he made his support public with donations, MSNBC makes its postion public funding airtime for Obama. I am appalled!

Backhouse, well said. Republicans simply fear change in whatever form it takes. What they should fear is what happens when the oil is gone and if the US fails to research for and find renewable, clean, alternative energy sources to replace it. China is spending millions on solar, wind energy for their future use as well as with the intent to manufacture the results of their investment to the rest of the world while the GOP sits on its backside and whines about Solyndra.

David Walker, informative and thoughtful post, well done. I concluded years ago that the GOP uses teachers as an excuse to demonize unions even though the facts have never supported their claims.

I agree, and I actually might enjoy watching Mr. Obama try and figure out when the Congress is or isnt on recess so he can push some edicts through. As I said weeks ago, I have no issue with Mr Obama being re elected......as long as Ms Pelosi and Mr Reid have the word minority in front of their titles. On another note...... those boys at Georgetown University sure are having fun. How about we tack a tuition rider to males entering universities..... call it the "cantbeyourbabydaddy" fee. I mean if the women dont want to pay for it.....let the boys parents pony up the fee. The other thing my wife added last evening, Birth Control does not keep the critters away or the other icky diseases that can and do happen. Let the schools put discounted condom machines. But Im betting someone would do the same thing we have here at work. The cafeteria guys started a frozen entree machine for after hours people. They filled it with Stouffers and other frozen meals at a discount. One of the night people,)who happens to have Obama stickers all over his car..... did a little math and figured out that they were cheaper than the local stores and bought them all and put them in our freezer. They refilled and he emptied it again. When confronted he just said..... I paid for them and you cant stop me. All you can do is refill the machine. We no longer have a machine.

Obama was elected out of political correctness and not for his qualifications to do the job. Hope and change, yeah that has really worked well for the nation. Obama is enjoying the presidency the ride, as he spends his days contemplating his next spin on AF1. He has the media in his back pocket along with the unions and whole host of special interest groups. All far left for sure.

He has the keys to AF1, and the nations American Express card, and he never leaves home without it. His spend baby spend policies have been a boon to his cronies, but the rest of the nation will see his broken promises turn into IOU's as he drives this nation to the point of no return financially. Gas prices are only the beginning as the weak dollar from the lack of fiscal restraint will usher in a prolonged period of inflation.

Obama is the great divider, and his hope for re-election depends on it. A nation united Obama loses, a nation divided Obama wins. There is a reason the nation is enraged with hatred, it is the Democratic Party agenda for victory. Blame him, blame them, blame everyone else for everything. That is all we get from Obama, and for many it is working.

Dennis:

First – No matter where our President is he is seconds away from world-wide communications. In other words it does not keep him from doing his duties as President.

It's not a matter of access, it's a matter of giving attention to the problems. The only attention Obama is providing for is his re-election. Need I remind you that the president is the COO of this country. His attention is being diverted away from matters of state while he is focusing solely on winning an election... and he has been doing this for almost a year now.

Second – Presidents do not make law, Congress does and they spend 1 of every 3 weeks away from where legislation is debated and voted on.

Congress have home district offices. They work from those offices while they are in their districts. Just because they aren't in Washington, doesn't mean they aren't working. I don't really understand your point Dennis... The president's duties are different than congresses. It's the president the comment was focused on. This president spends most of his time campaigning. He has been since Jan 20th 2009.

So Dennis, your big point is that if Barry was interrupted during his full-time canpaigning, he could telephone in and do the job he was elected to do??? Weak argument, even for a lefty liberal. Past Presidents have sent their own legislative proposals up to Congress to work on. Barry sits in the WH waiting for Congress to send him bills to sign for a photo op. Maybe if Barry were to spend a bit more time on being the President, he could send Congress some legislation to keep them busy.

Liberals have a hard time understanding the humor behind absurdity. Limbaugh thrives in the use of absurd statements. Liberals take Limbaugh way too seriously and will attack him at every corner... why? because Limbaugh stands for the right. What else is new? They also do the same thing to any right wing personality. I can list the commentators the left hates... Limbaugh, Hannity, Colter, Levin, Savage, Malkin, Beck... need I mention all of them? If they are on the right, the left hates them and have no problem expressing that hate. As far as left wing commentators... they can say what they want with no problem from me... There's this little thing we have in this society... it's called freedom of speech... I think the left forgets that all the time.

The GOP/Rove strategy when threatened, is to assassinate & belittle the subject who is making the argument. And then change the subject.

There is a reason the nation is enraged with hatred, it is the Democratic Party agenda for victory.

You want to know why this nation is filled with hatred, take a look in a mirror.

Hate Limbaugh? I don't hate Limbaugh. I have no use, however, for people who make up their own facts, people who demagogue, people who publicly attack people who do not have a means of fighting back, people who get their jollies by denigrating others so they can get a rating. That's why I don't watch Rush, because he's a hateful idiot, not because I hate him myself. He's not worth the effort or energy to hate.

BB,

You are wrong. Plain and simple. That girl (or any female) does not deserve the treatment that a public figure like Rush is showering upon her. How would you feel if was against a female member of your family? This isn't, at least to me & hubby (we have a daughter), a matter of left or right, but a matter of common decency. And ALL decent men should be offended by Mr. Limbaugh's actions - no matter which side of the political divide you are on.

Oh, and Michael1969, one word for you - FUBAR!!! :)

David, I wanted to fall out of my chair laughing. I couldnt agree more that parents have the primary responsibility for their children's education but when you asked the questions where these kids get the sense of entitlement, free lunch or arent responsible--do you even get the irony? Do you not see what the progressive agenda is? Just look at the controversy over getting free contraceptives for women? The who liberal agenda is about its not your fault its someone elses. We bail out the banks, GM, the unions, homeowners because there is no sense of personal responsibility or accountability. Who is leading this movement in which the government will solve everything for you and pay for everything by taking from one segment of society and giving to another including the very wealthy our seniors? Given your past style of trying to be somewhat satirical I thought maybe you actually were poking fun at your own liberal base but I cant believe that to be true so I think you were serious but correct me if I am wrong.

David Walker - Thank you for an enlightening post. It's so much easier to blame someone else than take responsibility for your child.(and that seems to cross all political lines - you didn't have this before WW2 and the baby boomers)

Joe in Albany - I agree with you and George Will - I think a lot of the Republican hierarchy feel the same. If most conservatives would read George Will than some of these right wing fanatics the Republican party would not be in this position

New Dawn - good to hear that sponsors for Rush's show are finally realizing women are a potent constituency - both politically and as a consumer - latest war on women's rights - Santorum states that tampons promote sexual behavior/ WI Grothman proposes bill that labels single parenthood as child abuse. If this continues the way it is going, not only will this effect the Republican's chances for the White House, but it will effect how women(and the men who love them) vote in House and Senate races. George Will, better talk some sense into these people.

Michael lotsanumbers:

Your criticism might have some validity if you could show a leftward tilt to news reportage at MSNBC. The fact is, Lawrence O'Donnell admits to having a socialist orientation. Rachel Maddow admits to being a liberal. Chris Matthews is somewhat conservative and somewhat liberal. Al Sharpton is liberal. None of them hide that fact.

Indeed, they hide no facts. If you could demonstrate that they are putting out misinformation or outright disinformation as does FOX, your complaint would have substance. You are complaining about opinion, no more and no less.

Over the last few days, I have watched FOX, and the amount of outright lies is stunning. I am more than happy to provide an example. A FOX shill, masquerading as a financial guru, was speaking with Greta Van Susteren on her show on Wednesday. In the screed she was directing at Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, this woman flatly stated that both agencies had approved NINJA loans.

I am not here to defend Fannie and Freddie. They were a disaster in the fiduciary responsibility department. However, neither originated NINJA loans, or any loans for that matter. That's a fact. They are second-tier players. Period. Those loans came from the vaunted "free enterprise" sector, but of course, that runs counter to the FOX narrative. So, they lie.

This crap goes on night after night after night. That simply doesn't happen at MSNBC.

Where does it end Feisty? Let's pay for contraception, then let's pay for the treatment of STDs, then pay for funerals from AIDS and Hepatitis C and on and on...how about women who are celibate? where's the equlity? Shouldn't they get a $1000 a year for something since that's the estimate for a woman's contrception for a year? How about men? Why not give single guys a $1000 a year too? This isn't about contraception it's about responsibility. Maybe next we can go back to the rule of Fornicating Under Consent of the King? Since we're paying so women can have sex maybe Obama will start telling them when too. How women who only like sex in cars? Should we buy them cars now? You liberals can't see the real issue. Responsibility. But keep posting Feisty maybe one day you'll be Obama's Blog Czar....

Good morning phancy. I hope you had a wonderful week and are looking forward to an even better weekend.

If the conversation between Limbaugh and the young college student wasn't actually listened to by people, and they are commenting solely on the fact that it occurred on Limbaugh's show, I believe any observation regarding that conversation to be completely inaccurate. In otherwords if it wasn't actually witnessed or heard by those making commentary, it's based in bias.

If a person doesn't actually understand the sthick of Limbaugh and how he approaches those that attack him from the left, again it's biased. I personally didn't listen to that segment of his show. I haven't actually listened to him in a couple of months. I do know his style and most of it is absurd. He uses absurd methods to demonstrate his points. Most of these are taken out of context and the meanings are never fully explained when pointed out by the left. It's happened thousands of times.

Because this is being publicized and taken to gargantuan proportions, I'd be very leery of who is doing the reporting on it. Something's missing from it... especially if it's coming from the left wing media. I am very aware of the history of such reporting.

I'm not making excuses for him... but I do know how things get way overblown on things he says that are inaccurate. Since I didn't listen to the segment, I am limited to pointing out the norm in reporting what he says by the left.

Ahhh Jack... I've been to Portsmouth once.... ONCE!

Do you really think your opinion of me matters? In the overall scope of life in general, your opinion is but a grain of sand on a deserted beach.

It is a question of freedom of speech. Let me ask you Jack, were you listening to Limbaugh when the conversation occurred? Did you have your radio tuned in to his show? Did you? Huh? Did you?

I pretty much know the answer to that question. You were probably listening to Randi Rhodes or some other far out wacked liberal show. This is where you reside... in liberal la la land. Remember, I've been there. Once.

Since it is pretty obvious that you weren't listening to the show, you are basing your information on something that is second hand. My very wise grandfather taught me, among many things, a singular truth of life... Believe half of what you see, and none of what you hear. I guess you never learned this lesson. Every liberal on this board is falling for what the left's version of the conversation entailed. Since I didn't listen to him when the conversation was live, I can't comment on second hand information... I do know the history of left leaning observations of Limbaugh... most of them are false. I have no other reason to believe the premise to be false this time.

Judy: Don't you but-but me pal, I'm on to your game and I've got a pocketbook full of free contraceptives to prove it.

Me: What does that have to do with anything?

Judy: It has EVERYTHING to do with EVERYTHING. Don't you know free contraceptives are a women's health issue? And Neanderthals like you wanna take that away and make us use aspirin!

Me: OMG forget the aspirin, that's not what I had in mind for tonight. And I would gladly buy you some contraceptives in return for…

Judy: Don't try to sweet talk me pal, I'm on to that game too. If I wasn't such a lady, I'd kick u where it hurts the most – and post THAT video on utube.

Me: OK, so I guess that means we're not on for dinner?

Exactly. He just digs himself in further and further and further.

BrianB--I guess I am going to have to explain it to you. I've met a lot of people who listen faithfully to Rush every day. They don't interpret his remarks as being humorous or purposely absurd; they take it as the Gospel truth. (I say "Gospel truth" because that reflects your reading of the Bible, which many people read metaphorically, but which you take as the literal truth.) I've listened to Rush enough myself to understand how he manipulates his listeners. And I listened enough to yesterday's clip to know that it follows his usual pattern. It wasn't meant to be humorous, and it wasn't meant to be absurd. It was meant to denigrate an intelligent young woman who did not deserve to be treated the way he treated her. It was meant to be provocative. It was purposely done to manipulate a whole array of right wing listeners who are easily manipulated. (DCIA got it precisely right: "It makes them feel real good someone understands them.") That you excuse him says more about you than you can possibly understand.

BrianB,

Let me get this straight. Your theory is that if you didn't hear it live (your asinine taunt of "Let me ask you Jack, were you listening to Limbaugh when the conversation occurred? Did you have your radio tuned in to his show? Did you? Huh? Did you?") then it didn't occur? Or that you have no right to comment on it? Is that what you were childishly trying to say? BrianB, using your ridiculous logic (being really, really gracious by calling whatever tumbles out of your mouth/fingers "logic"), then if you weren't actually sitting in the studio when the Windbag uttered those repulsive phrases, I guess that wouldn't entitle you to comment on it either? Careful now, because if you don't think (again, throwing you some latitude on your ability to cognitively process anything) that you actually have to be sitting in front of the ignat while he's peppering you with the spittle from his rant, it's a slippery slope all the way back to SEEING AND HEARING A PLAYBACK of the repulsive, repugnant one doing what he does best: uttering ignorant, misinformed blather to the right-wing masses that feast on it and who's only response is to ask for more. And absurdity isn't a pass for what he was saying.

The fact is that it was Rush who ranted on and on about the Georgetown student. I saw it, and I heard it. You can have your opinion, no matter how misinformed or myopic. That's your right. But you don't get to pick and choose the facts. That's just wrong.

We are going to continue to apply pressure until Iran takes a different course.”

Feisty, Good Morning, the silence so far is deafening.....the women are waiting and watching. Tick Tock guys. Who will be the man or woman in the republican party who will stand up for the women of this country? Who amongst you will take a stand against Rush. Courage is all it takes.

There can be only one GM, the one who's an actual doctor, the one who can set aside his personal beliefs in lieu of the Constitution. Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, he skews his own message with intelligible rants he rates right up there with Alex Jones.

    Joe,

[Just think how much better off America would be if Barry devoted as much time to actually doing the work of being the President as he does being the Campaigner in Chief.]

First – No matter where our President is he is seconds away from world-wide communications. In other words it does not keep him from doing his duties as President.

Sorry you don't get to use this one. Even though I didn't like or vote for Bush, y'all have this thing about him spending too much time in Crawford. Pot/Kettle

I don't agree how Rush worded his comment but his premise is spot on. Sandra Fluke put herself in the public domain by volunteering to speak in front of the congressional hearing. She is a law student at Geargetown and she's complaining that she can't afford contrcetion? Give me a break! Why should I have my taxes going to a Georgetown student for her to have sex? Don't you liberals see how ridiculous this is? How big a of a nanny state do you libs need? Are we going to have to pay for attorneys if the contraceptoin fails and one of these lawyers to be get pregnant and wants to sue the pharmaceutical company? I have an idea you'll love: Let's make the 1%ers pay for all contraception! I'll bet you agree with that one?!

Feisty - do you really think I thought you'd remain in neutral? The simple answer is no. Ideology always takes preference over radicals like you.

The clip is cut short. It's only a portion of what was said. But since I heard it, I am now convinced Rush hasn't lost his sense of humor. I can see it totally bypasses your level of understanding.

Leave it to the liberals to express a false sense of righteous fury over something said in humorous absurdity by Limbaugh. Have you ever listened to Bill Maher? How about Colbert? or any number of liberal commentators? If you don't think they say equally offensive things, then you are solely basing your fury in the obvious direction... you flame on the right, but accept any nasty thing the left says about the right. It's the same old, same old. Why am I not surprised?

Remember Fiesty, we all have opinions... mine aren't any better than yours but if you desire to hate me for my opinions, then that is completely your choice.

What Rush Limbaugh said on his show was an attack on every woman in America.

You can cloak it anyway you want - but women got his misogynic message.

You can say you enjoy the rest of his show's episodes, but to stand up for how he conducted this one is to back his cowardly attack on this young woman.

When did treating people with decency go out the window and this garbage get accepted as humor?

Ideology - You are an upstanding person. Way to go.

When you defame someone, anyone, on a sponsored, nationally syndicated radio show, you are liable for the words you speak.

When you do this with video and audio tape running, you are also a fool.

But, most of all, when you do this in violation of the truth of the story, when you slander someone using this kind of language and innuendo, when you speak this before an audience, you have no class, no decency and no excuse.

Those of you that support this, excuse this, try to pretend it has no consequence or meaning or intent, those of you who ignore this, are equally guilty.

    Shame on all of you.

Smitty - you're just too ignorant to understand the logic. Besides, I heard the youtube clip Fiesty provided... and I sat there and laughed at the humor. Liberals only find humor in what the left says about the right. If the remarks aren't laden with insults, the left isn't satisfied with the results.

Your fake indignation is appreciated though. It expresses exactly what the left stands for... and why the right just shakes their heads at your falsehood.

I'm not going to apologize for Limbaugh, he's an ass, but you shouldn't feel sorry for us conservative women, we're not stupid, the men may talk big but they know that the best way to win an argument with us is to say "yes dear" it's the power of the vagina honey and both sides know this ;)

I am sure "rappers" are the only artist who ever make misogynistic statements in a song... It has not been done by anyone else.

Regardless if you knew anything of Common, Damage and listened to the music rather than google random lyrics that fit your agenda, you would see Common actually is very positive person. He even has many songs actually embracing women. I am sure you will only respond by trying to post even more lyrics that are either out of context or that you dont understand. I refuse to go into detail and try to explain rap lyrics to you, but your example you even posted when explained is not being overtly disrespectful to woman though I would admit the language is foul.

To make the comparison easier with out the foul language that line Common said is less suggestive than Billy Joel in "Only the Good Die Young". With your logic Billy Joel should not be allowed in the white house.

Rush saying that we can watch women was a bit much. I can understand the idea that the watching them was supposed to be a joke and not taken serious even though its offensive. What I think is equally if not worse about what he said was that he suggests the idea that the women fighting for the issue are all prmiscuous, which whether they were or not, it really is not his business.

Jack said: And I listened enough to yesterday's clip to know that it follows his usual pattern. It wasn't meant to be humorous, and it wasn't meant to be absurd.

Jack - to a liberal it wasn't either... and that's the point. To those on the right, it was extremely humorous and absurd to boot. Since you base your hatred of Limbaugh on your ideology, anything he says is offensive to you... and again, that's the point. I'm certain it flies completely over your head because you don't have an inkling of how right minded people think. You can only base your thought process on what is contained in your brain... total liberal ideology. I'm not blaming you, but since you are blaming me, who sits in judgement? Again, a grain of sand on a deserted beach.

One other thing Jack... When I was younger, I thought like a liberal. I had very liberal ideas... and my thinker was liberal in nature... a funny thing happened to me when I grew up... I discovered liberal ideology was a complete waste of time. I grew into conservatism.... I realized that most liberal ideas were emotional in nature... only concerning a false sense of concern over insignificant things. I also realized this was a totally heartless way to approach life. You wouldn't know about such things because you haven't evolved beyond your emotionalism. Of course I don't expect you to actually absorb any of this.. and you probably won't even read it... but someone will... and anyone who evolved will understand exactly what I am talking about.

soazdan, you have revealed yourself for the uninformed, bigoted, mysogonistic person you are. Along with those who share your opinions. You have shown that you completely ignored the facts of the whole story. You have shown that you merely accepted the Fox News and Rush Limbaugh version.

Sandra Fluke put herself in the public domain by volunteering to speak in front of the congressional hearing.

Sandra Fluke came forward in support of a friend. Speaking in public opens you to slander and criticism? Speaking on someone's behalf, or your own behalf, does not condone the kind of slander to which she has been subjected.

She is a law student at Geargetown and she's complaining that she can't afford contrcetion? Give me a break!

Since when does being in college mean you have loads of extra money to spend? Do you know what it costs to go to college today?

Why should I have my taxes going to a Georgetown student for her to have sex?

Sandra Fluke's testimony, as voiced to reporters and a in a separate hearing, was about her friend using birth control pills to treat an ovarian cyst. It was not about having sex by either Ms. Fluke or her friend. Your taxes are not going to fund someone else's sexual life anyway. The issue is about availability of medical care and treatment.

If you can't argue from the facts, don't argue. You are entitled to your opinions and your views, but not to made up facts.

That's your right said:Let me get this straight. Your theory is that if you didn't hear it live (your asinine taunt of "Let me ask you Jack, were you listening to Limbaugh when the conversation occurred? Did you have your radio tuned in to his show? Did you? Huh? Did you?") then it didn't occur?

Not at all. Your asinine insinuation falls way short of what my point was. Second hand information from a biased source is equally biased.... or do you have a problem with that assertion?

I didn't hear it myself so I was not qualified to comment on it. If you find this to be childish, I am so glad you don't work for me. If you did and made the same ignorant comments, you'd be among the ones looking for a job.

The fact is that it was Rush who ranted on and on about the Georgetown student. I saw it, and I heard it. You can have your opinion, no matter how misinformed or myopic. That's your right. But you don't get to pick and choose the facts. That's just wrong.

So you subscribe to Rush 24/7. Interesting. Or did you simply view it on youtube? Did you formulate your hateful opinion based on a liberal ideology lurking somewhere in your mind that immediately took offense to his comments? I have a suggestion for you... since you obviously aren't a Rush fan, then stop listening to him... AND - since you don't understand his method or way of expressing himself, why do you even bother? Anything he says should be totally ignored by you... or are you one of those people that can't stand to avoid mouthing your comments on what the right says? I'll readily admit I'll mouth my comments on what the left says... and I do it proudly... much to the disdain of those who participate in these boards... and there's nothing you can do about it except put me on ignore... which I encourage... because people like you obviously want to shut out any contrary opinion to your beloved beliefs.

Words like myoptic and hateful are the clear choices for liberals when they speak against conservatives. As if they are of any effect. Are you trying to win over my viewpoint? It's not going to happen... and that really irks you, doesn't it? Nothing you can say or attempt to prove to me about liberalism will ever change my ideology. I've already traveled that road and found it way to obstructive.

      When I was younger

You posts indicate a teenage simpleton. How much younger can you get?

      I grew into conservatism.

No, you succumbed to the fear mongering and now try to execute it yourself, you're just not very good at it. You defend the indefensible and you do it without facts or logic, you just pull stuff out of your behind and toss it to see what will stick. You have no credibility, zero, none. You've got a bad case of liberalitus and you have zero understanding of what you attack. What you do have is uncontrolled anger and you need to direct it at someone because you know no other way to deal with it. You listen to Fox or those in your closed little circle and and think you'll be seen as somehow smart in your little group if you go out and do a little "liberal bashing". You've done a fine job of swelling your own head today, but you didn't convince one, not one, liberal on here today that anything they think is off base. Your tactics don't make people think. Speaking of thinking...

you don't have an inkling of how right minded people think

What are right minded people? People who think like you? People are not right minded unless they think as you do? What a steaming pile of self-centered nonsense. If you meant how people on the right side of the political spectrum think that's a different story and it is plan to see after just a few minutes over at Fox that "right minded" people think that it is ok to tell people who they can love and marry, it is ok to tell a woman that she is not entitled to the same health benefits as everyone else because she is employed by a church that shouldn't be in business in the first place, you think spending ridiculous amounts of money on military hardware is a great investment, you think wars are great business, you think all of the money should flow to the top few "successful" people because that will eventually make us all better off, you think that there should be no rules, every man for himself and we will all be better off, no one will rip anyone off. Yeah, that's "right minded" alright. You're a dolt and an idiot, quit wasting people's time and give Koch his check back because today's effort was a big fat FAIL!

First, Common is a rap singer that made general statements in a lyric. Second, Limbaugh singled her out. It was not a general statement. He called her, to 6 million people, a slut and a prostitute.

If your wife or daughter was cast in the same light, you would be looking for the person that said that or you are no "man". A general statement that "if a woman believes in... she would be regarded as a slut" is completely different than calling an individual by name such demeaning names.

It makes me hope there's a Hell. I might be swimming in it, based on some omnipotent's decision that I deserve it. But I will be clawing and gnashing my teeth at the people that condone such disgusting rhetoric.

Brianb-999431, you may have lost your emotions. I do not know. But there is a name for your description. It's called a conscience. It is supposedly a Diety's gift to Man to make better judgements in his decisions between right and wrong. If you have indeed shedded your conscience so you could make judgements without emotional stress, they offer prayer groups for you.

For those that follow their conscience and make right decisions, you should feel envy of them, and sadly, you will not.

I am stunned by what I am reading from the right-wingers. These are the guys who seem to believe that liberals are supposed to be tolerant. They're sissies. They think life is all about the warm fuzzies.

I can't escape the impression that these tough, strong, manly, right-wing guys, would stand by if someone called their wife, or their girlfriend, or their mother, or sister, or aunt a slut. Yup, that's just fine.

How's that work, when all you manly guys take your wives to the company picnic? "Hey, let me introduce you to the little slut, my wife Mindy."

I don't know one lefty liberal who would begin to tolerate that kind of abuse directed towards his wife, daughter, sister, mother, or any female for that matter.

Limbaugh and his defenders are beyond misogyny. I'd bet my bottom dollar they don't have the stones to talk like that in public. Punks, the lot of them.

I wonder if David Walker knows what the term punk means. It's pretty much on the same level as the word slut.

It's just fine to call men punks but it's not okay to call women sluts. I guess this is another of the long series of politically incorrect rules the left places on society... fine for males to be called names, but not fine for women... and women want equality... in who's world. Or is David's world one where only the left are the arbiters and makes up the rules... Only the left gets to call all the shots... tell the right what they can and cannot do. All the rules the right has to follow the left are exempt from.

I don't think so. Hey David... you're the punk.

Bill Maher calls male and female conservatives far worse every week on his show and the claim that Fiesty's comments are intelligent and compassionate--please provide me some proof. Give me one intelligent critically thought out post regarding a topic? Please just one? No editing just give it and it must not have one single name calling, personal attack, swear, no religious bigotry that is offensive to millions of Christians, Jews and/or Muslims. Come on I want you to find one.

However, I have to admit Brian has really shown they hypocrisy and being ganged up by a margin of 40-1, he has pretty much won this debate. Jack, Fiesty and David, you guys look like fools in this debate. When someone is used by the left wing to testify in front of congress and says such ridiculous things that she cant afford her contraceptives while attending a college that costs $50k a year, its a shame that someone thought that was a good idea to have her testify in the first place. You know what the simple answer is? Get a part time fu*&king job and help pay for your lifestyle like so many of us who figured out how to get through college and pay our personal expenses.

David wondered how our children feel so entitled and where it came from? Another good example hud David? Who taught Fluke to want free stuff or have someone else pay for her lifestyle choices?

Moonbase--you do realize that none of us care if all the advertisers pull the plug from Rush right? He is an entertainer and he takes the risk that he offends people and this stuff happens. You do realize its no different than Howard Stern etc? The problem is that once these guys pull their advertising and whole bunch who are happy with his notoriety and dont care about the negative will replace them and if not and he goes off the air, that is the risk he takes. That doesnt change the hypocritical reaction to this right? How many of you were calling for a boycott of President Clinton when it was discovered that he harassed and took advantage of young women? That is far worse of a gender issue than an entertainer calling a woman a slut. You see, you can only cry wolf like this when you have been a consistent champion of woman's rights regardless of the politician who is doing the alleged bad thing. Right now, progressives dont have clean hands and are not consistent in their passionate support to be credible and believable.

But you are an intellectual brainchild to produce insults and specific put downs to those on the right.

I was talking to you, Ye of Little Brain. And, yes, I am insulting you because the most you can come back with is something about "intelligent bones". Surely you have heard the expression "not an intelligent bone in his body" before. It's a figure of speech. But the fact that you've referred to it twice now indicates that you're fumbling for something to say. You won't admit to the real issue. Limbaugh is saying exactly what you want to hear. You're one of those guys who just hates the thought of equality between the sexes.

I wonder if David Walker knows what the term punk means. It's pretty much on the same level as the word slut.

OMG! "[O]n the same level", huh? You really should shut up, as Fiesty suggested. You keep on digging your hole deeper. If you were just trying to be provocative, I could understand. But you really believe this crap. And you had the gall to call yourself "evolved" in an earlier post?

I am stunned by what I am reading from the right-wingers. These are the guys who seem to believe that liberals are supposed to be tolerant.

Their "tollerance" ends when some conservative like me says "There's no such thing a a 'free lunch'."

You are either highly misinformed or highly misled. I wonder if you have ever looked up the definition of Liberal.

I paid 19,000.00 in taxes last year. I did not question the amount, I question its designation. I have my opinions about my hard earned money invested in a weapon destined to kill innocents and call it collateral damage. I ponder the thought of my money subsidizing billion dollar corporations. I question the right of government to rape a woman with a probe, using my money to fund enforcement. I question the right of government funding of viagra but not birth control.

One thing I do not question are the conservatives; bearing a flag in one hand and a Bible in the other. I know the type. Standing behind the flag of their nation they make statements disavowing it, yelling, "Keep government out of my life!". Standing behind the Bible are words and deeds directly opposite of what it teaches, prefering instead the benefits of greed. Let the poor starve, everyone fend for themselves, and if you're white, you're alright.

I believe I have a right to my Social Security and Medicare. I believe I have a right to drive on a pothole-free road. I believe I have a right to protection- from citizens and non-citizens alike. I believe I have a right to be a liberal, or conservative, or libertarian.

I bear the title of liberal with pride because I also believe it is my money and therefore my right to "give a free lunch" if I want to.

The one point he has made defines the standard conservative. It seems to be quite accurate.

Apparently, after one loses his love, honor, charity, compassion, and any other emotions, he becomes a conservative.

Stocks Return More With Democrat in White House: BGOV Barometer

              By Bob Drummond

While Republicans promote themselves as the friendliest party for Wall Street, stock investors do better when Democrats occupy the White House. From a dollars- and-cents standpoint, it’s not even close.

The BGOV Barometer shows that, over the five decades since John F. Kennedy was inaugurated, $1,000 invested in a hypothetical fund that tracks the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index (SPX) only when Democrats are in the White House would have been worth $10,920 at the close of trading yesterday.

That’s more than nine times the dollar return an investor would have realized from following a similar strategy during Republican administrations. A $1,000 stake invested in a fund that followed the S&P 500 under Republican presidents, starting with Richard Nixon, would have grown to $2,087 on the day George W. Bush left office.

“The market does tend to do better under Democrats than under Republicans,” Sam Stovall, chief investment strategist at S&P Equity Research in New York, said in a telephone interview. “Is it because Republicans mishandled the economy, or inherited a weak economy? I’ll leave that to others.”

The S&P 500 yesterday hit its highest intra-day level since June 2008 and closed at 1,362.21, the highest since last April 29. The benchmark index is up 8.3 percent so far in 2012, the biggest year-to-date gain at this point since 1991.

Since Kennedy took office, the Democratic S&P fund logged a 992 percent gain, versus 109 percent growth for the opposition party, even though Democrats occupied the White House for 23 years over the period, compared with 28 years of Republican presidential leadership.

The annualized return for 23 years of Democratic administrations is 11 percent, or four times the 2.7 percent annualized return during 28 years of Republican presidencies.

Investing $1,000 in funds that mirror the Dow Jones Industrial Average under the same conditions, Democratic investors would have had $7,550, versus $2,716 under Republicans.

The Democratic edge is so large that the party comes out ahead even without counting Bill Clinton (the Democrat with the biggest S&P 500 gain) and George W. Bush (the Republican with the worst market record). A hypothetical $1,000 investment under Democrats excluding Clinton was worth $3,539 versus $3,296 invested under Republicans except Bush.

Adding Dwight Eisenhower to the Republican column doesn’t overcome the Democratic advantage, either: $1,000 invested in the S&P 500 in January 1953 would have been worth $4,796 after 36 years under Republican chief executives -- still less than half the $10,920 nest egg accumulated in 23 years under Democrats.

              And that’s a fact Folk’s.

Believe me when I say that if the Republican/T.P party had anything resembling a Positive Accomplishment in the last 30 or 40 years they would be trumpeting it so loud you wouldn’t be able to hear yourself think over the cacophony.

But the simple truth is that the country does better under a Democratic Administration.

So Republican/T.P folks have got to have an “enemy” to disguise this simple Truth. George and the Boys used Iraq and Afghanistan. That is no longer viable for the Yahoo’s so they have made dividing and demonizing the American Public one from the other, this segment against the other. This is also the simple fact of their new found “Social Conscience”. Cynical I know but power does that to some folks like it or not.

So it’s a hateful bitter road that our brethren are going to take us down from now till November. American on American division always is.

My faith will be as it always is with the People. Even when things look darkest you have to believe that the Majority will do the right thing. Some of us have been here before and I’m hoping there’s enough of us left to show the others the way back to that place we were before.

You can always count on Americans to do the right thing - after they've tried everything else.

              IR, YES,

The right wing approach is to keep you afraid. And when you are afraid, you won't the best decisions.

This translates as GOP time and energy being focused on geting rid of the "enemy" (gays, environmentalists, those who support women and poor people), instead of working to make our lives better.

Democrats are portrayed as those enemies and all of the above, as part of that scenario.

IR, thanks for posting that article. I do believe there are enough of us left to show the way back to policies that work for all.

In my view, the GOP has reached decision time--do they implode in a sea of continuing the failed policies of the last 30 year; do they continue to pit American against American, continue to preach fear and live in fear and believe that compromise is a dirty word or do they find their way back to reason and the middle? While I am no fan of Rick Santorum and the thought of him as President reminds me of a bad dream, it is why I posted the other day that his candidacy would mean a real debate on what the GOP has become; it would expose the underbelly of what the GOP now represents.

People forget how things were in 2008 as the stock market collapsed and people lost half or more of their investments, 401(k)s, IRAs, etc. People wondered if they would ever be able to retire. And under President Obama's leadership (with obstruction from the GOP), the economy is coming back, the market has recovered and we are poised for further growth. And the Republicans think we should put them back in the driver's seat? Really?

Er... Jody... could you please explain to me some of the policies the left has produced that are totally effective? Start with Social Security... then move on to Medicare and Medicaid.... How about welfare... or the food stamp system. How about any liberal policy that has come out of Washington that doesn't cost the taxpayer billions or even trillions of dollars. While you are explaining the benefits of such liberal programs, don't forget the cost factors and how effective they are.

Hell Jody, you can even mention deforestation procedures out in California. This is where the environmentalists want do keep old forest growth undisturbed. Ask the homeowners there who lost their homes due to unnecessary forest fires the benefits they received. Yes, that was a liberal policy that was an epic fail. Clearing old growth helps to prevent forest fires and the environmentalists sued over it and won. They won alright... at what cost?

Jody - how true. I think the Republican hierarchy have finally realized just how far astray they have been pulled from their core values. My husband, a life long straight ticket Republican, decries that his party has been hijacked. It use to be debate centered on the economy and social issues were a discussion point. Now socially tyrannical views are being espoused and economic issues are the minor talking points.

Brian First of all never said that all Democratic policies are a success. Just on a whole seems that Democratic policies have a higher % of success especially economically. In any endeavor that you have there are always successes and failure. Just Think how much more chances of success we would have if Republicans/T.P's worked on bringing the expertise that they do have in legitimate counterpoint to Democratic principals instead of feeling that they have to constantly demonize them in a narrow focus to gain power. We could together effect great things instead of fighting things that we settled years ago. Look forward not backward.

              Steeler Fan,

Not entirely sure what your point is, are you saying that the country as a whole is back to being as good as it was under George W because the stock market has finally recovered? If I recall correctly, in this particular arena, most of the folks are blaming corporate greed for every ill in the nation. Since corporate greed is generally conceded to be one of the drivers of the stock market, are you now condoning corporate greed? The President has nothing to do with gas prices, but everything to do with the stock market? The economy is his, or it isn't depending on which day of the week it is, and whether or not the news is good or bad? Sorry if this sounds like an attack, I've been away from this site for quite a while, hoping the tone would improve, seems like I need to stay away until after the elections.

Iran is a backwards country not because the people are brown—they are human, we are human, we are one in the same. Iran is backwards because they have what so many of the social conservatives are yearning for: theocracy. Iran is a perfect example of when religion hijacks the state.

Brian - most of what you say about public schools and the DOE I agree with.

But I do think there needs to be a national standard for the core objectives that are taught.

Some of the schools where I live in the south were focusing so much curriculum time on other countries, feel good topics, art projects or fun science experiments that were not correlated to any basic core knowledge students need in the main academic subjects.

I am not opposed to teaching any of these things and that should be a local choice, but not at the expense of some basic core standards of knowledge all students need.

There needs to be some type of national standard - No Child Left Behind was suppose to do that and got derailed into a state choice and now we have an even more bloated DOE and still a huge discrepancy is the state standards..

Oh, Brian. Brian, Brian, Brian. Apparently you have forgotten about the past 30 years. Social Security, Medicare, AND Medicaid are great programs. They helped millions of seniors escape falling below the poverty line. Welfare has helped millions. What you OUGHT to be complaining about is how the GOP has been demonizing the unemployed (does "get a shower and a job" ring a bell?), the poor, and the moderates. They were the majors drivers of our debt and economic collapse. They should be held accountable; frankly, I say kick all of those right-wingers out of office. They've ruined this nation: it will be a great day in America on November 6 when the death-knell of the Republicon Party is sounded...

The battle lines have been starkly drawn up in the increasingly bitter and destructive Republican primary. There is now little chance that Romney can actually lose the race outright; he has the money, the super-PACs, the establishment backing and a few new wins under his belt. But a massive chunk of the GOP electorate simply refuses to accept Mitt as their nominee and will fight all the way to the end -- and beyond -- to stop him. Santorum's only chance is a full-scale insurrection by the Tea Party and religious voters to take out Romney. http://www.sunstateactivist.org

              Ideology,

" What I fight against is a lack of imagination "

Yes, imagination whether in politics , comedy, or the art of criticism is a quality that many of the above posters lack.

Rush's parodies appeal to "locker room" humor which I hoped most men grow out of by the time they have a real relationship with a woman.

The trolls on this board are not in that category yet.

if one is looking for great comedy about the role of women in society and what they can do if they are fed up:

Read "Lysistrata" by Aristophanes. He had imagination par excellence.

"And that's the way it is"......this week.

$1 out of every $4 dollars spent during the GOP primary has come from 5 people. Doesn't matter what political leanings one has, there's something wrong with that picture.

New Gingrich promised $2.50 a gallon gas after saying President Obama was offering "fantasies" and has a "weird" energy policy. This from the man who would rather spend millions to colonize the moon rather than on research for renewable energy resources for our "children and grandchildren".

Sunday, about 34,000 Russians held hands and formed a 10-mile human chain circling Moscow in protest against Putin running for a third term. Perhaps republicans should head to DC, hold hands and wave "None of the Above" signs to protest the clown show of GOP candidates.

Florida's GOP Rep Allen West blamed President Obama because it took $70 to fill his Hummer with gas. Here's a thought--who needs a gas-guzzling vehicle designed for war to drive to the grocery store?

The GOP primary this week can be summed up with Monday's Rick & Mitt Show: I'm more qualified that he is; no, I am; are not; am too" squabble. Makes one wonder if they're running for President of the United States or the 4th grade class at Jefferson Elementary.

President Obama said that with the higher gas prices the GOP has released their 3-point plan for $2 gas: drill, drill, and keep drilling!

Rick Santorum preached from his moral pulpit this week. In his world, kids who go to college with faith leave without it and it is harmful to the economy and the country. How does little Ricky explain that President Obama went to college without religion and found it later? Inquiring minds want to know.

The Dutch are mad at the U.S. or rather at Rick Santorum. Santorum told voters that in the Netherlands, the elderly wear bracelets that say "do not euthanize"; that 10% of those euthanized are elderly against their will; that the elderly won't go out after dark or go to the hospital. All lies, big fat ones. The Dutch are insulted as they should be. Oh, great, another angry allie because a GOP candidate says stupid stuff.

Australian newspapers had a photo of Virginia's Gov Bob McDonnell with the headline--"Virginia anti-abortion law akin to rape." Bet the vaginal-probe Gov won't be on any VP short list.

Alabama Senate Bill 12, authored by GOP Senator Scofield, required an invasive, transvaginal ultrasound for women seeking an abortion. Monday, Scofield changed the bill to allow women to choose between an invasive or noninvasive one--some choice. It's still an assault on women's rights; it's still big, intrusive government being inserted into women's private lives and doctor's offices by the party that claims to be in favor of small "leave us alone" government!

Catholic bishops, cardinals and even the Pope cannot convince 98% of Catholic women not to use contraceptives and the GOP jumps on anti-contraception under the guise of religious freedom as their 2012 battle cry! You cannot make up stupid.

One thing the GOP attack on women's reproductive freedom campaign has done is rile up a whole new generation of women. From Virginia to California, from north to south--there are angry women organizing and marching in protest. Virginia women formed the Women's Strike Force--a Super PAC of republicans, democrats and independents including former lawmakers--vowing to defeat any VA legislator who votes for anti-women's rights legislation. Oklahoma's "person hood" bill ignited a new Feminist Movement and mass protests. "Hell hath no fury" like that of angry women.

Rick Santorum called President Obama a "snob" because he wantschildren to go to college. Never mind that Obama's words in the SOTU were that he urged everyone to commit to one year or more of education beyond high school whether it is college, vocational, trade school or apprenticeship. Santorum was caught in his own lie because when questioned, he used almost the same words defending his "snob" comment. But, hey, blowing "dog whistles" isn't an exact science.

The "Gilded Foot" Award goes to Mitt Romney at the Daytona 500, "I have friends who own NASCAR Teams" adding for good measure, "I like those fancy raincoats you bought; really sprung for the big bucks."

Santorum put his name on a NASCAR vehicle--wonder how many people could read it as it raced by at speeds around 100 mph.

Rick "Step-off-the-Cliff" Santorum doesn't think the separation of church and state is absolute and John Kennedy's speech made him want to "throw up". Too bad, because it was President Kennedy's speech that paved the way for Catholics like Santorum to run for president.

President Obama was "fired up, ready to go" Tuesday. He aimed indirect hits at Romney and the whole GOP by saying they claimed giving the auto industry loans would kill it, now they say "we were right all along". They say it was pay back to unions. "Even by the standards of this town, that's a load of you know what."

The Dow closed at 13,000 this week, the first time since April 2008, and the NASDAC hit its highest level in eleven years but the GOP keeps saying President Obama is "bad for business".

Romney wasn't willing to "light my hair on fire" to win over conservatives. Maybe not but he sure did a lot of flame throwing just in case.

A Texas doctor and five owners of home-health agencies were arrested on charges that they were part of a $375 million fraudulent home health-care ring.

Wyoming State GOP Rep Kermit Brown decided the Apocalypse was coming and the state needed an aircraft carrier. Imagine driving that across country. Cooler heads prevailed when lawmakers realized the only place they could put it was in the middle of a volcano at often frozen Lake Yellowstone. Wouldn't do for GOPer faithful to be led 2 by 2 on to the Ark only to have it blown to California prematurely!

In his "Oh, God, I blew it in Michigan" speech, Rick Santorum said "the greatness of America is we have such diversity." Trouble is, in Ricky-Land, diversity means all white male chauvinists and all Christian.

In his "Oh, thank God, I won Michigan" speech, Mitt Romney talked about those outrageous off-shore tax havens while his millions vacation in the Cayman Islands and ski the Swiss Alps.

In Illinois, republican Art Jones hopes to challenge Dan Lapinski. Jones says the "holocaust never happened". He will neither confirm nor deny that he was a member of the Neo-Nazi Party. What say you republicans who throw hissy fits when Iran's Amadinejad makes the same assertion? You've got a holocaust denier running for elected office to represent the GOP.

North Korea agreed to stop nuclear weapons tests, uranium enrichment, long-range missle launches and will allow the IAEA to inspect. For now, the new leader appears to be reaching out--there goes another GOP "fear" threat gurgling down the drain.

Leave it to GOPers. They attach the Blunt-Rubio amendment about women's health to the Transportation Bill. This amendment would allow any employer to deny coverage for anything they object to morally. This is not about religious freedom, this is all about the GOP doing whatever it can to gut the ACA; and they are using women as scapegoats behind their smoke screen of religion to do it--angering millions of women in the process. This is a huge political blunder for the GOP--shades of the Road Runner and Wiley Coyote with a stick of dynamite.

Then there is Mitt Romney who broke his previous flip/flop record--it took him less than one hour to be against the Blunt-Rubio amendment and then claim he misunderstood and was for it! Whiplash.

40 Iowa House democrats staged a six-hour, walk-out protest when two gun bills were brought to the House floor for debate without notice and unscheduled. One is a Constitutional Amendment that eliminates all existing gun laws; allows anyone, including criminals and the mentally disturbed, to own firearms with no registration, no licensing--an unlimited gun free-for-all in Iowa. The GOP cried "politics, the democrats are playing politics"--pot, meet kettle.

Franklin Graham apologized for casting doubt on President Obama's faith. Well, fancy that, after he spent a week doing the full Ginsberg on every right-wing media outlet he could find casting doubt that President Obama is a Christian, implying that he is a "secret Muslim", Graham apologizes--after the damage is done and with the usual lame "if I offended anyone". What a hypocritical, lying, phony Christian Graham is.

The Bachmann "Chitspa" Award this week goes to Rick Santorum for "we went into a recession in 2008, because of gasoline prices." All this time we thought it was the fraudulent mortgages no one can find which caused banks to collapse. Shoot, a near Great Depression and President Bush could have ordered a gas price freeze and prevented the entire mess!

Food for Thought: What Rush Limbaugh said this week about a young, female college student named Sandra Fluke won't be repeated here but once again Limbaugh has proved himself to be an arrogant, selfish, disrespectful, insensitive, nasty, mean-spirited, despicable, hateful, bully--and a tiny, little man. He could not have listened to Fluke's testimony based on his rant. Limbaugh is the voice of the modern GOP--he speaks for republicans from his golden mic. He attacked your daughter, your sister, your girlfriend, your friend, your neighbor, your mother, your aunt. Where is the outrage from republican lawmakers, presidential candidates, the guy who gives him the mic or do they still quake in fear of that tiny, little man?

                Jody, Iowa:

You never cease to amaze. Another outstanding wrap-up. Thank you very much.

I was going to suggest that you save these, and perhaps ten or twenty years down the road, compile them in a book. Problem is, because of the "you can't make this stuff up" quality of Republican actions, librarians won't know whether the book should be in the fiction or non-fiction section.

Another outstanding post, Jody. Thanks for all your hard work. My personal favorite (there are so many to choose from) is the aircraft carrier for Wyoming---you can't make this stuff up!

It is so appalling to watch rights that we women have fought for for years under assault once again. Thank goodness it is energizing women and enlightened men and teaching them the lesson not to take their rights for granted. The Republican party should be ashamed that no one has spoken out against Rush Limbaugh.

The SILENCE IS STILL DEAFENING from the left 10 months after Obama had the rapper "Common" as an honored guest at the White House. The rapper who, in addition to PRAISING COP KILLERS, spouts "lyrics" like these...

Feisty, I could have written a thesis with my thoughts about Limbaugh.

David, that's funny but not as funny as the reason I'm down at 8.0--a button-pushing blunder on my part. All set to hit post and accidentally exited--what with all the widgets and script FR has, it's slower than molasses to get back. I was originally 3.0. I do save the posts; figure one of these days, I can provide a look back at the crazy and yes, it does read like fiction.

Thanks everyone. Tired Old Guy, thanks for the list.

No doubt, the GOPers will provide plenty in the lead up to Super Tuesday. Have a great weekend.

Brilliant observation on that despicable individual, as I said above, the silence is deafening. Just saw a piece on this on the Daily Rundown, a woman who does communications work for the GOP, couldn't bring herself to denounce Rush, only when pushed by Todd did she allow he wasn't helping their cause. Seriously, what kind of woman is not outrage at this jerk and the lack of outrage from the republicans.

Catholics are fit to run, and as JFK proved, to lead.

As usual, you miss what really happens-of importance- last week-

Obama solemnly intoned that his apology for the Quran burning had calmed the raving masses in Afghanistan. Thus, the two soldiers killed the next day were, undoubtedly, killed by very calm rioters.

Leave aside the facts- that prisoners were writing messages to their comrades in the margins of said Qurans- a violation akin to blasphemy, AND the acceptable method of disposing of such violated Qurans is burning-

Does this nitwit need to continue to provide proof of his own ego? I, for one, and completely sick of his constant self-aggrandizing statements.

In other news, DoE Secretary Chu proclaimed to the world via congressional testimony that, no, Obama's administration is not, particularly, disturbed by high gas prices; in fact, they're pretty pleased with them..seems Chu, not content with the billions taxpayers have already wasted on Obama donors' rainbow factories, thinks we need to throw more money down that rat hole.

If this administration epitomizes anything, it is the term "educated idiots".

Andrew Breitbart died- but the video footage of Obama that was to be released yesterday still exists- and will be released in the coming days. His legacy lives on, and

                Obama shelved in 2012.

Finally worked my way down here! When I didn't see you at #3 or #4 I feared you gave up doing the Friday Wraps! As always, it's wonderful and I appreciate your work.

I can understand how your anger and frustration might have needed editing. Watching Limbaugh's rants last night made me so sick that when they were replayed I would switch to the Bruins game--I just couldn't take it. It's bad enough that he said those despicable things. But in my naivete I thought even the RWNJs would distance themselves from his remarks. But they didn't. And in that refusal they have displayed their true colors.

But returning to Limbaugh for a moment. When I watched the clip of him I thought: This country is descending into true madness. It sometimes seems to me that we are slipping backwards in time to the Germany of the 1930's.

                Jack, Jack, Jack:

You just don't get it. God has already forgiven Limbaugh for that minor slip of the tongue. Of course, God doesn't have a Mom, and He (Note the capital "H". I'm all over this PC stuff.) impregnates Jewish virgins, so maybe He's a bit more tolerant of misogynists than those of us who have Mothers, wives, and sisters.

Well, stepping outside the PC mode for a moment, he (okay, He) must be tolerant of misogynists since they are the ones who are always saying they have been "called by God", whether to run for president or, on a less lofty scale, to set the Leftists on this site straight (no pun intended).

Heads up for a column coming on Sunday from George Will...

                www.politico.com/blogs/burns-haberman/2012/03/george-will-time-to-focus-on-congress-116180.html

It appears Mr. Will isn't keen on the GOP's chances of winning the White House in November and believes that the GOP needs to concentrate on efforts to maintain a majority in the House and win a majority in the Senate.

I've seen the same sentiment from someone on this blog...but sadly I can't remember from whom...but a tip of the cap must go to that individual.

                Murdering Trash, He Is...

How dare this piece of trash insult, murder, offend my family for 4 years, cause violence against me and my children whose ancestors settled New England - who is this pig that sits as though he were King of the United States?

This filth that intrudes on my civil rights and stomps on our founding documents as if he were above the rest of Americans - as if he enjoyed a title of nobility - CUT HIM DOWN FROM THAT CHAIR!

                This low life of Chicago.

                This Tommy-Gun Obama.

Block that plane from landing in your state when he decides it is time to "grace" your presence with his disgusting lack of character as if anyone cares about him or his family.

When a man lowers his standards beneath that of a criminal - I do not recognize him as president.

Mr. Obama - you are NOT my president. I recognize you not.

                I'm through with you.

I pray to God every day for your impeachment, your imprisonment for the crimes that you have carried out against my Judeo-Christian family in New England - visiting their common places and trampling their graves.

Who granted you title to to King?

How dare you remove the significance of my ancestors risking their lives and settling the colonies here, praying that they would survive each day to create a new nation.

How dare you insult the soldiers that serve under you who are primarily Judeo-Christian - forcing them to reconstruct your favored nations of Islam - deconstructing all that my Crusader warrior ancestors sought to defend and protect for future generations?

This is a battle between the Sons & Daughters of Ishmael and the Sons & Daughters of Isaac.

I know who will win this battle.

It's been written for the ages.

                Let it be done.

CORRECTION: Something that has existed for 5-10 years is suddenly a war on religion. Check the individual mandate........

And yes, I know it hasn't come into law; but come on. Even Newt Gingrich, the Crazie of Crazies, endorsed it. To get a "Reagan conservative" to do that is nearly impossible nowadays...

I would think that people who truly are "on american's side" wouldn't be that hateful, but hey, that's just my opinion. :)

Well, Vermontguy & Ruken, here's a fact for you - there has been more violence perpetrated by the left and the radical left than EVER committed by the Right in the name of ploitical agends.....FACT:

Lets start with the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots in Chicago where democratic controlled police were used by their leftist leaders (Mayor Daley - a democrat, and his group tried to prevent free speech) to quell demonstrations by the Students for a Democratic Society and the Yippie movement (which was a "New Left organization). All these groups involved where leftist inspired organizations and, to many, was the beginning of true political violence in American politics. All brought to you, me and the United States by the left.

I could go on but, I think this might be too much "FACT" for you two to assimilate at one time.

Yes like spending TAX PAYERS money on his campaign which a bipartisan group of Senators are now investigating. CNN has yet to print this story has it indicates Obama is a criminal. More than just selling guns to the drug cartels and laundering their money he is now suspected of using tax payer money for his own use.

Wade - try to get your own ideas. Look up Franking priviledges of the Congress. Talk about using government money for campaigning. It is wrong and all this money in elections is worse. Corporations are not people and money is not speech but Democrats are just as guilty as Republicans in using our money to lie to us in campaigns. How about a bi-partisan movement to publicly funded campaigns? It would save all of us money and stop the innane lies on radio and Television from both sides.

I’m hoping that twenty years in the future, that the people of the United States will look back on 2012 and wonder why the Republicans-Tea People had any supporters at all. In viewing this group today, it’s totally unbelievable how they have sunk so low.

The biggest problem I have is the fact that so many people are so out of touch with reality, and that they actually support the likes of the so called Republicans-Radical Right. They are like a group of blind little sheep that fall into lock step with these villains who want nothing more than to destroy our President at all cost, and set back our nation and our people.

Yesterday is a great example of such insanity, with the attacks on women’s health issues. The Senate vote, the loud mouth Rush Limbaugh attacks. Then there is the racist Federal Judge with the racist email, and the Sheriff Arpaio and his birther stance investigation.

Has anyone heard any Republicans office holders or the folks running for President, stand up against these radical right wing kooks? No, they support this crap.

In the future, the majority of people will look back on 2012 and wonder why the Republicans-Tea People in office let this circus go on.

Production is up (6 year high) and demand is down (15 year low) so both should result in a price drop.

The real problems come from the Middle East, refinery production (shut downs) and speculators.

                Job1, well said.

Maybe if the right-wing warrior presidential candidates stopped threatening war on Iran, the oil speculators would quit speculating as much. Throw in Syria, and the rest of the middle east unrest, the speculators are fueling the high cost of oil. The US is exporting 117 million gallons of gas every day which means they are taking advantage of the need while jacking up the price here because of lower demand and a big supply of something we're not buying. Rising gas prices was not President Bush's fault nor is it President Obama's fault. Most people recognize that.

Can't forget that those speculators driving up the cost of gas are the very ones that republicans are protecting from paying the same percentage of taxes as the rest of us.

While the republicans are protecting the hedge fund managers they then want to turn and blame President Obama for their part in increasing gas prices.

Rush like most republicans started his abusive rant on Fluke without even knowing what she said. Still the leaders of the republicans won't or can't stand up to their leader limpsomething for the spouting of lies.

I am sick of the republicans trying to make women into second class citizens without any rights in the name of religious freedom.

Want to know what it is like to live in Iran, a religious controlled state, vote for a republican for any office and find out.

Dennis- the term "production", in this case, refers to the number of rigs. Yes, there are more rigs today- many of them low yielding, on PRIVATE lands-mainly in North Dakota. The far richer fields on public lands have not been tapped.

Nor have the fields in Alaska- and don't even start on the Gulf.

Moreover, demand in THIS country is down- it is UP globally.

In order to reduce the price of gasoline, we must commit to increasing the supply of crude- and send a clear message to the market about that intent- the way Bush did in 2008, when gas hit $4 a gallon. As you recall, the price collapsed immediately after he signed executive orders opening fields and streamlining the permit process.

Killing Keystone does not send that message.

Chu's testimony before congress, that the administration is actually pleased with the price of gas, send the opposite of that message.

The voters need to send a message- something along the lines of

                Obama shelved in 2012.

                No Joe,

According to the USEIA (US Energy Information Agency), domestic production declined during the Bush administration. It was 5,000,000 BPD (barrels per day) when Obama came into office. It is now 5,500,000 BPD, a 10 % increase.
                http://www.examiner.com/economic-policy-in-national/u-s-oil-production-increased-10-under-obama-major-oil-discovery-gulf

International Business Times Feb 24, 2012: Gasoline demand plummeted -- down 5.4 percent, or about 500,000 barrels per day, from a year ago, marking the 24th week in a row that year-on-year demand is lower.

Production is up. Demand is down. We have a surplus of oil, enough of a surplus that we are exporting oil. So what is an oil company to do to keep their profits up? Speculate and raise prices, of course!

It's the same old song and dance from the GOP...the answer to high energy prices is OBVIOUSLY to give us more with the same old chants of "Drill Here, Drill Now" and "Drill, Baby, Drill".

I find it fascinating considering the report yesterday from the Department of Energy that we exported more fuel in 2011 than we imported. It's the first time since 1949 that has happened.

                www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-02-29/u-s-was-net-oil-product-exporter-in-2011.html

Even the "Fair And Balanced" folk saw this one coming...

For anyone bummed out about the United States' dependence on foreign oil, try this forecast on for size: The U.S. is on track to be a net exporter of petroleum products this year for the first time in 62 years -- and yet, domestic gas prices remain at or close to record highs for this time of year.

Data released last week by the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows that the U.S. sent abroad 753.4 million barrels of gasoline, diesel and other oil-based fuels in the first nine months of 2011, while taking in only 689.4 million barrels.

                www.foxnews.com/us/2011/12/05/us-on-pace-to-become-net-fuel-exporter/

Yet the chants continue that we need more.

The fact is that we as a nation are oil addicts and we're complaining because the price for a "hit" keeps going up and up. Well, if a crack addict is complaining that it costs him more to get a fix then wouldn't he be better served by no longer being a crack addict?

The GOP laughs at green energy...but unless you're stupid enough to believe in "abiotic oil" you know that some day we're going to run out of petroleum. What then?

Right now is green energy profitable? No...and that's why the private sector isn't investing in it...because there's no money to be made from it. If there is any hope it must come from government investment.

China leads the world in green energy investment. We have to do something to try and keep pace or China will end up with the iPad of green energy while we're stuck with the abacus.

That is the part that republicans don't want to tell you. The fuel from the keystone pipeline goes to the world market and not to the American market. We just get to take the chance of destroying our largest underwater ground supply for the Koch brothers to make more profit.

If they ran the pipeline across Canada, it would be a third of the length to get the sludge to an ocean to ship to the world market. Why don't they run it across Canada, because the Canadians don't want to chance destroying their enviroment.

The Koch brothers and the republicans think America is so stupid we will fall for their lies. The Koch brothers are not worried about our water supply, they only care about the oil and the money to be made. The Koch brothers bought off politicians always want to make the Koch brothers happy any way they can.

                Small VS Big government.

The most misused terminology to confuse the public. When I was asked what I prefer, I said small government because I thought, just as many voters do think that small government means less police involvement in my (their) personal affairs. I did NOT know that small government means MORE police involvement in people's personal affairs with little say from elected representatives. In small government, only police are to decide on people's fate and not their elected representatives. Many voters do not know that. Can Politicians urgently clarify the differences.

Polls show that a large percentage of ordinary American voters do not understand the difference between

                Small government and Big government.

This is an issue which Democrats and Republicans need to clarify to American People. The actual difference is as follows:

                1. Elected leaders must be inaccessible in a small government. Voters must not reach them. If you are a voter, be informed that in a small government structure, politicians only need your participation in electing them. Once you have elected them, they need to become too small to help you with your personal concerns. If you have personal concern after electing your representative, you are advised to see the police and not your representative because they have formed a small government.

                2. Concerns of voters must be handled by the police and not by elected leaders in a small government.

                3. Public funds can only be used in wars or to help foreign countries that are facing hardship and must not be used to help American people in a small government. Big government is the opposite of what I have mentioned above. Big government is a government elected by the people to address their concerns. It is a government in which elected representatives are obliged to address individual voters concerns. They must be accessible. It is a government by the people, of the people and for the people.

Funny thing about Oboobatrons, let me clarify, leftards, libbies, dumcrats, screamed about rising gas prices during the Bush years and all his fault, all you hear from these hyporcrites now, is its big oil not Oboobas fault.

Only delusional people think a POTUS is responsible for the global market of oil.

Only delusion leftists think the President is not responsible for our national energy policy.

                Huh, Ruken?

Steven Chu STATED in 2008 that he wanted to see our gasoline prices rise to the levels in Europe.

Now, he tries to backtrack like a typical leftard politician.

HE SAID IT. NOW, WE ALL ARE GETTING IT.

                What say ye, Ruken?

Or, maybe you don't read any news other than NBC, so you probably weren't aware of his comments.

                WRONG.

Is your fearless leader railing about speculators driving oil futures through the roof- AGAIN?

Nope. That would offend his pals. Instead, he tries smoke and mirrors on oil subsidies, which DEMOCRATS voted AGAINST removing last time it was proposed because everyone with BRAIN knows that will only INCREASE our price at the pump.

You're the one without a clue, pal...with your two word answers.

lol @ someone who uses the term "libtards". Good lord, are you 12 years old? or younger? lol.

And yes, the president is (partially) responsible for a national energy policy (congress plays a role too of course), but you aren't going to have significant impact in 3 years. Here's a clue for you - we've known since the early 70s that we need a "national energy policy" that would prevent us from being held hostage by the crazies in the middle east, and we've failed gloriously..through the presidencies of both the repubs and the dems.

Its a national failure, not obama's.

                Oil Company “Subsidies” Clarified

                We’re still
seeing a flood of calls from both sides of the aisle to cut subsidies as part
of an overall strategy to reduce spending in Washington. While there is plenty
available to cut, there has been a steady and disingenuous conflation being
promoted by the White House which seeks to describe certain tax benefits received
by companies in all manner of industries
as “subsidies for big oil.” Just
last week Tim Pawlenty was taking
                to the stump
in an attempt to call out these warped descriptions.

                MANCHESTER, N.H.
                – Former Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty called a White House proposal to reduced
tax breaks for oil companies “ludicrous” after a gathering of tea party
                activists.

                “I think we
should have a discussion about all subsidies,” Mr. Pawlenty told Washington
Wire at a forum for 2012 GOP presidential hopefuls. “But the Obama proposal is
ludicrous. I mean the worst thing we could do is raise the cost burden on costs
on energy and oil… What he’s proposing is a tax increase on energy at a time
when the gas is $4 a gallon. It’s preposterous.”

                For those
seeking to sort out the definitions of the terms being used, the American
                Petroleum Institute has published
                a new paper
                doing just that.

                Contrary to what
some in politics and the media have said, the oil and natural gas industry
currently enjoys no unique tax credits or deductions. Since its inception, the
US tax code has allowed corporate tax payers the ability to recover costs and
to be taxed only on net income. These cost recovery mechanisms, also known in
policy circles as “tax expenditures”, should in no way be confused with
                “subsidies”, i.e., direct government spending.

                Here are a few
of the items which are being incorrectly identified as “subsidies” inside the
                beltway:

                Intangible
                Drilling Costs

                – Companies which engage purely in energy exploration and discovery can recover
their costs related to exploration at tax time at a rate of 100%. This lessens
the burden on energy providers for the number of “dry holes” which may be found
in the process. Integrated companies (i.e. “big oil”) can recover these exploration
costs at 70%. Not a subsidy.

                Domestic
                Manufacturer’s Deduction (Section 199)
                – A deduction (not a credit) equal to
9% of income earned from manufacturing, producing, growing or extracting in the
United States, is available to every single taxpayer who qualifies in
the U.S. The oil and gas industry, and only the oil and gas industry, is
                limited to a 6% deduction
                .

                Percentage
                Depletion

                – The percentage depletion deduction is a cost recovery method that allows
taxpayers to recover their lease investment in a mineral interest through a
percentage of gross income from a well. This depletion method is not available
to companies that produce oil as well as refine and market it (i.e. “Big Oil”.)
This is available to all extractive industries (gold, iron, clay, etc) in the
US and is in no way unique to the oil and gas industry.

                There are more,
so download the paper and read them for yourself. Then, when you hear your
congressman talking about all of the “subsidies” for big oil, you can set them
                straight based on the facts.

                To be clear, the
federal government does engage in the handing out of a lot of actual subsidies,
including those for ethanol and a variety of wasteful programs which are
essentially failures on their own merit without feeding off the teat of Uncle
Sam. And we should certainly be looking at those areas as way to address cost
cutting. But trying to depict tax credits used by the energy industry – in the
same fashion as every other industry – as some sort of special love festival
                for Big Oil is dishonest.

Leading Democrat Begs the Saudis to Increase Production

                  Updates

February 27, 2012: Today Senator Schumer
                  is pleading
. Literally pleading for the Saudis to increase
                  production.

                  Original
                  Post

Is it just me, or am I misreading this (link farther down)? Senator
"Chuck" Schumer asking the Obama administration to beg -- literally,
beg -- the Saudi's to produce more oil?

Why is he not asking the administration (his own party) to work with our own
domestic oil and gas industry to do the same thing rather than what
                  President Obama IS doing
                  ?

Before reading any further, see the link below to see how much Washingtonians
                  are paying for gasoline:

                  In Washington,
DC, two percent of one's income goes to gasoline
                  .

So, now with that as background (the Obama administration
slow-rolling the US oil industry and Washingtonians paying 2 percent of their
income on gasoline) we now proceed.

Am I misreading this? Senator Schumer asking the Clinton Obama
administration to beg the Saudis to produce more oil.

Didn't Schumer's state ban fracking? Just asking. Need I say more? If
so, go back to the first link above. (I believe the Marcellus extends into New
                  York state.)

                  Anyway, here's the Schumer
press release embedded in a television news story
                  :

                  Dear Secretary Clinton:

As you are aware, due to the worry turmoil in the Middle East and its
                  impacts on oil supplies
, American consumers are facing rising gasoline
prices, with the national average price of a gallon of regular gas at $3.69.
This is nearly double 2009’s average of $1.86 a gallon and the highest
prices we have ever seen for this time of year
. The price of diesel fuel
has also increased reaching $4.02 a gallon. The price of diesel fuel not only
affects truck drivers, but it pushes food and transportation costs higher for
consumers, too. The combined effect of these energy price hikes drags down our
economy, which can undercut our recovery. These skyrocketing fuel prices are
directly linked to the global energy market, particularly Iran’s recent efforts
to manipulate oil prices and the worry of impacts on supply from an escalation
of regional hostilities. To address this situation, I urge the State Department
to work with government of Saudi Arabia to increase its oil production, as they
are currently producing well under their capacity
                  .

Saudi Arabia, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, is
averaging around 10 million barrels of oil per day. This is 2.5 million barrels
short of their approximately 12.5 million barrel capacity. These lower
production levels have a negative impact on global markets. When paired with
recent actions by Iran in halting sales to French and U.K. companies, and
threatening to stop sales to countries such as Italy, already fragile markets
are unduly roiled. These market shifts are now hitting Americans at the pump,
reverberating throughout the rest of our economy, and threatening our recovery.

"These market shifts are now hitting Americans at the pump,
reverberating throughout the rest of our economy, and threatening our
recovery." What? Two (2) percent of their income and folks in Washington
are complaining. You have got to be kidding.

First of all, turmoil in the Middle East is a very small factor when it comes
to the price of oil right now. Very little US oil comes from the Middle East
any more and the US is now a net exporter of oil (source: Public Television
                  business show this morning).

But for argument's sake let me give you that: if it's the turmoil in the Middle
East, it's the US that is pressing the Iranian sanctions. It wasn't China,
India, or Russia calling for sanctions. Iran calls our bluff and imposes its
own embargo shutting off oil to France and the UK.

And so now Senator Schumer is asking Hillary to beg the Saudis to increase
                  production? Am I missing something?

But I guess it's working: Oil futures are down 31 cents now, down to $109.46.

Which brings us to the "nut" of Schumer's request: his argument that
Saudi is producing well below its capacity. Not just a tad, not just a little,
not just a smidgen, but "well below" its capacity.

If that's accurate, there are only two explanations for their decreased
production: either they really dislike the Nobel peace prize recipient or they
are unable to increase production. Neither explanation is really very
                  reassuring.

Senator Schumer might want to go back and listen to the former CEO of Shell, Mr Hofmeister,
and his discussion of "business as usual
                  ."

Speaking of which, "business as usual," did Senator Schumer write a
letter to Ms Lisa Jackson, head of the EPA, imploring her to give a "nod
and a wink" to the President so he would approve the Keystone XL? Approval
of the Keystone XL would not immediately effect the price of oil, but it would
send a clear message to the American voter that it is no longer "business
as usual"with regard to how the administration will work with the domestic
oil industry going forward. That would be reassuring, and I bet the price of
                  WTI-NYMEX would drop $10.

Wow, take the time to read the news story linked above. Read the Schumer letter
begging the Saudis to produce more oil. Either they can or they cannot, and if
they can, and they aren't, it speaks volumes about our relationship with one of
our longest Mideast allies. (Speaking of which, how are things going in Egypt?)

Personally I don't think they can

the polls show obama ahead now. Gas prices are a red flag, but the improving economy, and the discord in the GOP ranks, make an obama victory at least a 50/50 chance.

                    Kevin feel free to leave.

Limpbaughs victim was telling how birth control pills were used for more than birth control as over a million and a half women used birth control pills for hormone therapy not birth control.

I have noticed that republicans never let the truth stand in the way of an abusive rant.

How dare women act like they are not second class citizens. The republicans plan on bringing down those uppity women who think they should have the rights to decide about their own bodies even to birth control.

If we have to pay for your Viagra then you can pay for our birth control. How about some film for that Viagra we pay for. You can send it to Limpballs. What is fair for women is fair for men.

                    Kevin, quick question.

If you are calling this website liberal, than why are you posting on here?? I mean, we aren't forcing you to post on here; you can leave when you want.

FOX will not allow commentary from ordinary folks. You have to be a failed politician.

republicans at state levels are screaming about voter fraud, and they're the only ones practicing it, romney and the sec of state in indiana who will be sentenced for voter fraud. imagine that?

Republicans know there is voter fraud as they are doing it. But it is not the people who are committing fraud, it is the ones in charge.

Being they are ones committing fraud, it is your vote they are trying to block.

Want to see what it like to live in Iran, vote for any republican and find out.

100 Fundraisers so far this year....Fully DOUBLE what even GW Bush had at this point in time.

I don't care if you're a Democrat, Indpendent, or Republican- you should be OUTRAGED at this.

This is what has become of our political system.

It is NOT about governing, it is about pandering to the special interests that funded your election campaign- so they fund it again. It's all about getting re-elected, not governing.

How about you actually spend some time doing your JOB, Barry?

It so ironic, it's laughable- how the Democrats are the biggest screamers about "special interests", and yet the leader of their party spends more time than any President in history pandering to them.

                        What a party of imbeciles...

It's easy to have extra time as POTUS when Congress doesn't pass anything you propose.

how about you actually show us what part of his job he isn't doing that he is failing due to too much time on fundraisers? lol @ mike..you want him to go to afghanistan and chase taliban or something instead? :)

I love how half the time the haters complain about all the bad he's doing, and the other half they complain that he spends too much time on vacations and fundraisers.

                        which hatred is correct? :)

Bush was on so many vacations that he couldn't fit in the fund raisers. What President took the most vacation time?

Mike - I was with you until you decided to make it a partisan issue and then insulted the opposition.

This constant need to campaign is ruining the democratic process and it fuels the intense lobbying.

Maybe that "extra time" should be spent at the WHITE HOUSE.

That's what he's PAID to do.

DO WE GET TO DOCK HIS PAYCHECK EVERY DAY WHEN HE RUNS OFF ON ONE HIS SCHMOOZE THE SPECIAL INTEREST TRIPS?

Maybe you should be more specific, instead of being Wasserman-Schulz's parrot...

here's a clue for you - every politician running for re-election spends time fundraising and campaigning. Its what they do, at least in the current system. Try to pay attention.

They haven't forgotten about the Hilary vs Obama bloodbath, Kevin. They just choose to ignore it, sweep it under the rug etc...That sure was ugly, wasn't it? The Obama Team (including the media) pulling the race card at every turn? I've never seen such a dramatic turnaround of LOVE into HATE the way Blacks turned on Bill and Hilary. It was great though.

anyone who says obama has NOTHING to run on is a fool. You may want to hate everything he did, but that just ignores that many people think much of what he did has value.

Thinking that everyone agrees with you is your biggest problem. :)

TO ALL MY FANS: Sorry I haven't been able to contribute many posts today, but I keep getting interrupted. Some woman named Sandra Fluke keeps sending me IM's asking me if I'm free tonight. Does anybody know who she is? Several friends of mine are now telling me they've been getting IM's from her also.

Meanwhile, gas prices continue to rise and you all can't blame Bush like you did in 2007. So whose fault is it?
