Michigan delegate drama

*** UPDATED WITH AUDIO *** AND AT 4:30 WITH A STATEMENT FROM THE MICHIGAN GOP AND SANTORUM'S CAMPAIGN.

The Detroit Free Press today reported that the Michigan Republican Party voted last night to award the state's two at-large delegates to the statewide winner -- i.e, Mitt Romney -- instead of dividing them up proportionally.

That move, according the paper, would give Romney a 16-14 edge in delegates instead of the 15-15 tie between Romney and Santorum.

As a result of this move, NBC has since changed the delegate count, 16-14.

In response to criticism that the Michigan GOP changed its rules to benefit native son Mitt Romney, Michigan GOP committeeman Saul Anuzis -- a Romney supporter -- said the winner-take-all aspect for the at-large delegates was always agreed upon, and any misunderstanding was due to an error in the party's memo.

"Regrettably, there was an error in the memo drafted and sent to the respective campaigns," Anuzis said. "There were questions raised at the time the memo was drafted as to whether the legal language used was accomplishing the goal of the committee and we were advised that it was, but now it is clear that the memo did not properly communicate the intent of the committee. The email traffic surrounding the drafting of the memo in early February makes explicitly clear what the intent of the committee was."

But in an interview with NBC News three weeks ago -- on Feb. 8 -- Michigan GOP Chair Robert Schostak clearly stated that Michigan's at-large delegates would be awarded PROPORTIONALLY.

HERE'S THE AUDIO OF THE INTERVIEW.

Schostak said:

"We start off with, after the penalty, 30 voting delegates. Okay? Each district-congressional district - you can win individually. So you have 14 districts you can win two delegates. That takes you to 28. Okay? The two at-large that remain, provided the individual candidate won at least 15 percent of the statewide vote - okay so with four candidates that's likely to happen. Then they get awarded proportionally, those delegates, and then rounded to the nearest decimal point so there won't be any half delegates or quarter delegates."

(Emphasis is ours.)

The Michigan Republican Party has been rife with internal disagreements over the years, so it's not surprising that it doesn't even agree how its delegates should be awarded.

*** UPDATE *** Here is a new statement to NBC News from the party's communications director taking blame for not explaining "more clearly" and laying out the math.

Matt Frendewey, director of communications, Michigan Republican Party:

"It is unfortunate if I did not explain this more clearly. When the RNC indicated it would penalize our total delegates and award us only 30 delegates, the credentials committee met on Feb. 4 and interpreted the penalty by voting unanimously to send Michigan’s full delegation. Within congressional districts, designate two out of the three delegates as the RNC recognized delegates and two out of the 14 at-large as RNC recognized delegates.

"The at-large delegates are still awarded proportionally to candidates that achieve the 15 percent threshold, the two RNC recognized delegates are assigned to the candidate that wins the most votes. Michigan’s results, without the RNC penalty, 28-Romney/28-Santorum. If the RNC upholds its penalty, 16-Romney, 14-Santorum."

That is of no consolation to the Santorum campaign.

Per NBC's Andrew Rafferty, here's the response from Santorum national political director Hogan Gidley:

"There’s just no way this is happening. We’ve all heard rumors that Mitt Romney was furious that he spent a fortune in his home state, had all the political establishment connections and could only tie Rick Santorum.  But we never thought the Romney campaign would try to rig the outcome of an election by changing the rules after the vote. This kind of back room dealing political thuggery just cannot and should not happen in America."

In 2000 a bunch of "republican party officials" should have gone to jail for tampering with an election, and SCOTUS backed the criminals. In many red counties it will be difficult to believe the results. I can't imagine a scenario in which everyone can believe election results no matter what the technology is in place. It comes down to trust, and in these pimaries that trust has been violated repeatedly.

The "smoke filled room" is back in style with the GOP and has been since 2000. There is no accountability and there are no consequences for screwing up or going back on your word or for being just plain crooked. This sounds like the behavior that we used to expect from Soviet judges at the Olympics.

I want to see this memo. If the intention was to award the 2 delegates to the winner then why were these rules created?

Tuesday 28 February 2012: 30 of 30 of Michigan's delegates to the Republican National Convention are bound to presidential contenders based on the results of the voting in today's Michigan Presidential Primary.

The Michigan Republicans will bind 2 delegates to the candidate receiving the most votes in each CD and bind the remaining delegates propotionally according to the statewide vote with a 15% threshold.

  • 28 district delegates are to be bound to presidential contenders based on the primary results in each of the state's 14 Congressional Districts. The party will use the boundaries from the 2010 census. Each congressional district is assigned 2 National Convention delegates.
    • The presidential contender receiving the greatest number of votes in that district will receive all of that district's National Convention delegates.
  • 2 National Convention Delegates are to be proportionally bound to presidential contenders based on the statewide vote.
    • A candidate must receive 15% of the statewide vote to be eligible to receive National Convention delegates. From those candidates meeting this threshold, proportionally bind the national convention delegates according to the statewide vote. Round factions to the nearest whole number (below 0.5 are rounded down, 0.5 and above are rounded up). If the end result is less than 2 delegates, allocate 1 additional delegate to the candidate receiving the most votes statewide. If the end result is more than 2 delegates, subtract 1 delegate from the candidate receiving the fewest votes statewide.

Off topic, Please MSNBC can you get rid of the loud mouth Dylan Ratigan?Even when I turn the volume down I still hear him ragging on the President and people on the left.

He just committed a mortal sin. He played Bob Marley's sacred "Get Up Stand Up" . I am insulted.

News for Dumb FUX -- talking about clowns, you certainly remember that the democrats in Michigan in 2008 had their share of issues. maybe there is something in the water?

The Michigan Democrat Primary took place January 15, 2008. Originally, the state had 156 delegates up for grabs that were to be awarded in the following way: 83 delegates were to be awarded based on the winner in each of Michigan's 15 congressional districts while an additional 45 delegates were to be awarded to the statewide winner. Twenty-eight unpledged delegates, known as superdelegates, were initially able to cast their votes at the Democrat National Convention.

However, the Democrat National Committee determined that the date of the Michigan Democratic Primary violated the party rules and ultimately decided to sanction the state, stripping all 156 delegates and refusing to seat them at the convention. Despite this, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled that the primary could go ahead as scheduled. The DNC Rules and Bylaws Committee later met on May 31, 2008, and agreed to seat all of Michigan's delegates with each delegate having only receive half a vote. As a result of this compromise, Michigan had 78 votes at the convention. On August 24, the delegates had full voting rights restored.

These idiots may not know it but they are in real danger of ending their party as we have known it. Today they pretty much all voted to allow insurance companies to avoid providing womens health services and pretty much anything else a business wants to disallow on moral grounds. The Blunt Amendment didn't even bother to try to hide it as some religious exemption. This party is at war with the poor, the middle class and all women. Soon all that will be left are the religious fundamentalist extremists, the extremely wealthy and really stupid white trash and even the white trash may be too embarrased to take the literature at the polling booth showing how to pull the GOP lever.

Some of you have a very short memory of the Dems in 2008. You apparently don't recall the meeting to decide how to divide delegates in the states that had been penalized. Hilary and Obama both had reps there to say why they should have the delegates. And, surprise, they gave the edge to Obama! Such hypocrites, you all can be.

They're all master word smiths; where the number, 1, 2, and 3 objectives include swaying public opinion so it's more favoreable to whatever outcome that is decided, or intended; and making sure that no matter what happens, a positive spin can always be applied to, whatever is done....

It's "PR at it's finest" though in this case, as applied to politics, and the study/field of public opinion.... And yes, unfortunately, I did study some of this stuff in college; you don't want to know what all the topics and lecuring points on classes in public opinion was. And it only started with a review of WW II propaganda methods, didn't end there.... I changed majors after I had been lectured quite enough (IMO) on a how to dosier on some of this stuff.... But oh so much of it, I don't think was entirely distinguishable from corporate PR....

Its only ONE delegate, who cares. It doesn't make even a tiny bit of difference. I am sure Romney doesn't care and probably wishes that the Michigan GOP would not have done this. It is much ado about NOTHING. Santorum isn't going to lose the nomination by one delegate and Romney isn't going to win it by one. There are still four candidates in this race and one delegate vote is simply no relevant.

Sounds like some scaredy cats to me. At least in my state, you can't go vote for the other parties delegates. Remember, this is the closest Wall Street has ever been one of their man been in the White House.

So let's be honest and answer the following question:

Why someone who is reportedly worth $ 200,000.00 USD, and paid $ 3,000,000.00 in Taxes last year alone, is so interested in becoming the next President of the United States?

The Presidential Salary of $ 145,000.00 ( Minus Taxes ) a year, does not even come close to pay Romney's taxes, even after cheating all the way down to 15%, and being reported unemployed to avoid personal income taxes.

    Does anybody know something I don't ?

I am for ending subsides for all businesses and farming also. I don't think we should be giving tax credits for "plug in cars" and other things like tax credits for jobs. I would like to see all federal programs reviewed for efficiency and necessity and cut or eliminated. We are broke, we can't afford paying everybody for everything. You can tax the millionaires and it won't make a dent in our national debt.

I have said many times I am not against raising taxes but only after all programs have been reviewed and the federal government cut waste, fraud and over lapping programs as called for in the GAO Reports.

BTW, I don't watch a lot of FOX or CNN or even MSNBC, but if FOX is so bad, why is it's number of viewers far exceed that of CNN & MSNBC. Paul - You might want to go back and check the democratic party voting fiasco in 2008, especially in Michigan and Florida. Big fight between Obama and Clinton as to divide up delegates and counting of votes. The primary wasn't ran very good by the democrats in 2008.

WAAA, WAAAAA, WAAAAA. Santorum didn't mind taking the extra delegates from Iowa, by winning with only 25 vote difference. Now, Santorum is upset because the independent delegates were awarded in Michigan to Romney, the winner. Romney won by more than just 25 votes... Get over it Santorum and show some grace and ethics here. There is nothing worse than a lowsy loser....

sfcret--Of course, PART of the reason O'Reilly outdraws the NBC nightly news is because Fos is the ONLY Right leaning news source, and everyone has a BUNCH of Left leaning nets to listen to.

That said, O'Reilly at least makes an attempt sometimes to be fair and balanced--the other nets (and many of the other Fox talking heads) don't even pretend. Too bad I don't like Blowhard Bill.

I agree with your 'suggestion' that we review all government programs with a view towards cutting them all.

However, I'm one of those that while I don't mind taxing the rich more, we make a REAL mistake by not taxing EVERYONE, even if it is only $5 bucks a year. EVERYONE needs to know that the handouts are NOT free. I might even go so far as to re-work Welfare, unemployment et al to where you have to spend a certain amount of time volunteering to keep your benefits unless you are SEVERERLY handicapped. Even a mom with small kids can do one morning a week at a day care center watching kids for someone so THEY can work. Or mow lawns of the elderly, or what ever. The thing we need to correct is the notion that ANYONE is 'entitled' to someone else's money, with NO effort on the recipient's part.

And if we need ANY proof of that, we only need to see what is going on in Greece. Politicians in Europe have been promising their citizens LAVISH benefits with NO way to pay for them, other than borrowing (also with no way to pay that back) and now the bill has come due, and Greece is on fire.

And I don't want MY kids and grandkids to be handed the bill because we have an ever growing 'entitlement society' who has never had to EARN those self-same entitlements, not even by LIMITING the number of kids they expect others (who LIMITED their family size) to pay for.

These clowns can't coordinate a one car funeral!

Really, the current Clown in Chief doesn't know his butt from the ninth hole with apologies to Karzai when he should've asked for one for the "Quran killings" as it continues. There are times when he should keep his trap shut and others times when his silence is deafening afraid to commit politically one way or another. Wishy washy, skittish and indecisive when he doesn't know what to do or when not to do it.

The Dems have picked a fight they wish the hadn't with the Catholic Church and other religious groups over contraception. Big political blunder.

The Keystone Pipeline seems to have brought Slick Willie into the fray criticizing Obama with Hillary trying to downplay this circus. Another losing decision making and policy.

Solyndra , Fast N Foolish and Obamacare will also follow him to the polls along with the bad economy and unemployment regardless of his propaganda attempting to portray a rosy picture.

Higher debt with even higher inflation as gas prices continue to rise along the cost of food and goods. The rising and overvalued stock market is not a leading indicator of what most people are experiencing economically and financially. It's just the opposite, go figure.

As far as money buying an election, you might want to see how much more Obama's campaign spent than McCain's, so I guess you could say Obama brought the election. Obama promised he would accept government funding then backed out.

Why is FOX watched more than CNN, CBS, ABC, or NBC? It's simple really, FOX News (and I use the word 'news' loosely) has historically brokered better channel position with cable companies and satellite broadcasters. This means in most of rural America, their channel assignment is among channels 2 through 12 and likely channels 2,4,5,6,7,8 or 10. In many markets MSNBC or CNN is relegated to channel 18 or 21 or 13 or some 'out-of-bandwidth range of common 'popular' channels.

In other words, they get more eyeballs by default, not because of quality of content or honesty.

I know some of you will proclaim 'What? MSNBC is on channel 6 where I am" but it's the whole country and all the rural cable networks I'm talking about, not a specific neighborhood.

Well, since comment # 1 was collapsed we just re-post this one here.

The dark Internet forces at work I guess, collapsed Feisty Red Head's 1st post.

                  So,

Remember the 2000 election in Fla?

Dear Old Daddy's Lawyer " friendly" team descended in Tallahassee like kamikaze Vultures under the

                  command of James Baker.

Also if little Bro Jebb had not being the Governor of Florida, who knows.

                  Remember the " hanging Chad?

                  It's De-Ja-Vu all over again!

Just when we think that We have seen it all, isn't it?

Remember, this is the closest Wall Street has ever been one of their man been in the White House.

So let's be honest and answer the following question:

Why someone who is reportedly worth $ 200,000.00 USD, and paid $ 3,000,000.00 in Taxes last year alone, is so interested in becoming the next President of the United States?

The Presidential Salary of $ 145,000.00 ( Minus Taxes ) a year, does not even come close to pay Romney's taxes, even after cheating all the way down to 15%, and being reported unemployed to avoid any personal income taxes of 20 % or more plus FICA and Social security.

                  Does anybody know something I don't ?

Because my 3rd Grade math just don't add-up!

                  Enjoy the show!

Joe Reyna--funny, but Romney doesn't NEED to use the presidency to become wealthy. And even if he were broke, he could still parlay being an EX president into speaking engagements and books, only OOOPS, he already HAS that.

On the other hand, Obama, the minute he was elected President, RELINQUISHED his law license. WHY???

I mean, Michelle just let hers go 'inactive' but all she has to do to go back to practicing is pay her Bar association fees.

So Obama will leave the WH in 1 or 5 years with NO law license or any other way to make a living other than the same way Bush I, Shrub, AND Clinton do. (and by the way, Clinton, despite 'graduating' the presidency with MASSIVE lawyer fees, and NO law license) is now one of the 10 wealthiest presidents EVER. And NEITHER of the Bushies made that list.

And I think THAT math certainly adds up.

Remember when they pretty much declared Iowa for Romney, even though Santorum won the state? Or in Maine, with some caucus results ending up missing and others not counted?

If the Republican party can't run a primary or a caucus that they've done for so many times in the past, how can we trust them to run a country?

And almost half the people in this country want to hand the country over to the Keystone Kops clown brigade? If they are this disorganized in a primary election, what will happen if they control the country?

Sheila---they probably think everyone commits voter fraud because so many of them do. I read that there were problems with Arizona because independents were excluded even though they were supposed to be included. A stunning level of incompetence and/or corruption.

Sheila MD--sorry, but my state has successfully PROSECUTED Acorn employees for voter fraud. And perhaps you didn't read the article that MSNBD ran last month that says there is something wrong with ONE out of 6 voter registrations.

And the DEMS are the only one fighting having an ID that says you are who you say you are in order to vote. Or even that you are a CITIZEN.

Bet if they thought the PUBS might be the beneficiaries of NOT having to prove who you are, they'd be pushing THAT requirement thru.

"ACORN was shut down in the wake of the September 2009 release of selectively edited videos by two conservative activists including James O'Keefe using a hidden camera to elicit damaging responses from low-level ACORN employees that appeared to advise them how to hide prostitution activities and avoid taxes.[9] A nationwide controversy immediately ensued resulting in a loss of funding from government and private donors,[10][11][12] including a "defund ACORN" act passed by Congress. Following the publication of the videos, four different independent investigations by various state and city Attorneys General and the GAO released in 2009 and 2010 cleared ACORN, finding its employees had not engaged in criminal activities and that the organization had managed its federal funding appropriately, and calling the videos deceptively and selectively edited to present the workers in the worst possible light. Despite this, by March 2010, 15 of ACORN's 30 state chapters had already closed[10] and the group announced it was closing its remaining state chapters and disbanding.[13]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_Community_Organizations_for_Reform_Now

The actions of the GOP in these states just fundamentally gives me the creeps. Free elections are the cornerstone of our democracy. When the electoral process becomes compromised, what is it that separates us as a nation from third-world dictatorships? We are supposed to be the beacon of democracy, the model for others to follow. Between the chads in 2000 and the mathematics of 2012, we are a laughing stock.

                              Just so sad ...

I will be voting for Santorum in Texas in March April May(?), and already have my "I'm Frothy for Santorum!" sign in the front yard. Not only can I laugh at the GOP, I can vote for them (at least until November, when it really counts).

SANTORUM is about to learn very quickly what the rest of us already know -- average Republicans don't matter. Indeed, when it comes to election fraud and big $$ (as in Gore v U.S. and in the recent CORPORATE RICH DUDES UNITED) only the ultra-rich are REAL REPUBLICANS and the Roberts Court has reinforced that repeatedly.

Santorum couldn't even hold onto his senate seat from Pennsylvania in the 2006 election. Santorum is running as a revenge candidate because he lost his bid to return to the senate and he is trying to prove to everyone the voters were wrong. Santorum just go away and shut your pie hole you are not good for anything. Romney is another lost cause the republicans have the worst of the worst running because non of the rest want to face the voters in a nationwide general election.(Boehner,Cantor,McConnell,Ryan,Uhl,McCain are all losers and they know it) This is like feisty says a one car funeral for who ever the republicans put up.

Listen to all the GOP & Teabaggerss Its all about the Wealthy getting richer and the middle class getting poorer.....They don't want to help the poor, I do mean the poor not the lazy good for nothings...Who are the one's that leach off the taxpayer. They: are the Wealthy that get welfare both for themselves or for the Corps. So really All party are at fault...But it seems that the Wealthy get away with it like the Corzine.(.Democrat )...They steal billions and the few poor steals a few thousands. So what does the GOP want to do is Screw the MIddle Class to get even with the few. As I say its the me me me and F everyone else.... The failures of the Republicans party trying to take away SS and Medicare & Healthcare for woman so they can give their wealthy Blackmailers more money...To hell with the Poor and Needy. Let them freeze in the winter and stave the Old and Babies, let them die from bad water, do away with the EPA and thats what you'll have, just like all you Teabaggers want...You make me sick with your Me Me Me altitude. It just a matter of time before the masses raise up against you . Greedy and you all call yourself Christains. What a laugh: Your no better than the Muslims you all hate. Wake up America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!WAKE UP

maze, people who are unsure or uncertain of their position resort to name calling and snarky remarks, just like bullies on the playground. So how unsure are you?
