All eyes remain fixed on tonight's Michigan primary, including the conservative blogosphere's. And the question is: Who will win tonight -- Mitt Romney or Rick Santorum?
The Washington Times’ Brett M. Decker believes Romney’s name recognition in the Wolverine States will give him the slim victory.
“Romney might dodge this bullet, but it came too close for comfort given how prominent his family name is in his home state. His father, George W. Romney, later a member of President Nixon’s Cabinet, was a popular three-term governor. Before politics, the senior Romney was president of American Motors Corporation (former parent company of Jeep), the closest one gets to being royalty in the world’s largest car making region. This local pedigree is a major reason why Mitt Romney beat Sen. John McCain by nine points in the Michigan primary four years ago. The political dynasty is so respected in the state that radio personality Ronna Romney, the ex-wife of one of Mitt’s brothers, won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in 1996 in large part because of the name.”
But not all conservative bloggers are convinced Romney can clinch a victory tonight. Conservative blogger Ed Morrissey at Hot Air writes:
“Assuming that the Monday-only numbers and the early voting figures from PPP are accurate and predictive, a turnout like the one in 2008 would result in a narrow victory for Santorum, 38.9% to 35.2%. That would produce a nearly even split in delegates, but give Santorum a boost heading into Super Tuesday. If he can’t close the deal in Michigan, then next week will be a very tough sell.”
John Tabin, conservative blogger at the Spectator echoes what most conservative bloggers are saying: “The stakes today are fairly high for both candidates.”
“If Romney can't pull it out in Michigan, where he won in 2008 and where his father was once governor, it's hard to see him winning the kind of near-sweep on Super Tuesday next week that would restore the air of inevitability that keeps not-quite-sticking to his campaign. If Santorum wins Michigan, it will begin to seem possible that he might snag the nomination out from under Romney (not least because a Santorum win today would almost certainly precipitate a significant fundraising bounce). Conversely, if Santorum can't win today, his sweep of the February 7th contests begins to look less like a sign of a campaign with real staying power and more like a blip (which is about what Newt Gingrich's South Carolina victory looks like at the moment).”
Regardless of the outcome, Jennifer Rubin, a conservative writer for the Washington Post, says tonight’s winner still faces big challenges ahead.
“Rick Santorum may lose one or both races today, but that does not mean he is out of the running for the nomination. Likewise, Mitt Romney could win both contests and still face a slow slog to the nomination.”
Part of this is attributable to the delegate selection rules, which, after tonight, will still leave the leader more than a thousand delegates short of the 1,144 needed to win the nomination. Moreover, it is highly unlikely that any candidate will sweep Super Tuesday, so even after next week’s contests the race will remain far from “over.” That is not to say that the results tonight won’t affect fundraising, press coverage and polling. But the desire to over-interpret wins and losses should be moderated.”

Romney is sweating bullets because Santorum might overtake him? Is that sad or what? The cynical political hack is being chased by a hypocritical religious extremist...this is a contest among losers and the "winner" will have to face a strong, united Obama campaign. Ha!
Obama by default in November!
I still think it will come down to the economy. If it's getting better in the fall, Obama wins. If not, it will be a knock down, drag out in which the Republican nominee - whoever that is - can do it. If the economy looks like it's falling off a cliff, then the Republican wins decisively.
What the campaigns do or don't do will play a role, but usually it comes down to things outside their control, and this time maybe more so than most years.
If Santorum even gets close it will be a hollow victory for Romney.
Tomorrows Headlines: Romney Rear Ended by Santorum
Ronna Romney, the ex-wife of one of Mitt’s brothers
Wow, does this sound like a plot line out of a David Lynch mini-series or what? Are Mormons even allowed to divorce? What happens to them if they do? Do they become Baptists?
I looked it up Amy & the Mormons seem to allow divorce but they call it something else and have a lot of rules to go with it. It sounded like the Catholics and annulment to me.
As much as it hurts me to say, I'd rather have Romney be the front runner over Santorum. It's not that I think he has a better chance of winning, it just truly scares me to think even for a moment that Santorum would have a chance to become president. For any sane woman out there, i'd bet you'd agree with me.
Romney takes the wind out of Santorums sails...heading into next Tuesday that becomes a big deal.
Sorry but RON PAUL is going to win Michigan!
That's just not going to happen, the race for Michigan doesn't even include Ron Paul. Newt and Ron are trailing way behind in this race, and the likely thing is one of them (or both) will eventually drop out leaving these two belittling each other until the bloody end.
Maybe Santorum is correct: "Satan IS attacking America with Santorum's bid for President"...How long must the insanity go on? This is Hell!
I believe the Michigan voter likes to choose their candidate as they would buy an electrical appliance: First thing we do is look at the sample appliance because we can put our hands on it, we will call this appliance the Barack Obama....hhhmmmm sounds foreign to me, but still it seems like all the buttons work and seems to be well made except for a few scratches and dings, it works, but I want one in the box, so I grab the first box and it is the Mitt Romney model, wo, the box is amazing, sooo rich looking and intricate, heeeyy wait a minute this box has been opened and resealed!!! It must be a return!! And sure enough the box rattles like something is loose, it probably doesn't even connect!! So I pick up the next box which is the Rich Santorium model, ohhh man...Look at all the scripture on it, wait a minute these are the complicated instructions, and I need a college education just to read!!! I hate things that dictate to you, how they Must be used!!! Besides, it rattles a lot when you shake it....Forget this!! Now the next model is the Newt Gingrich model, a nice catchy name, but wait, the box is huge and it weighs a ton!! No wonder, it comes with a lot of stuff and a bunch of it is old and outdated!!! Not for me, so I pick up the last model, you guessed it, the Ron Paul Edition, it is in a very small box and weighs very little, and the instructions are very, very simple, but I wonder if there is anything in the box??!!! I could be ripped off buying that one, so I go back and grab the one that works, the Obama model and go to the check out. Heyyy, I may even get a discount because the box is open and it even works to boot!!! That is how we select a candidate, too, unless we just don't care to shop wisely. I hope we all do though....
