Rick Santorum said he regretted saying he wanted to "throw up" as a result of late President John F. Kennedy's speech about separation of church and state.
He told conservative talk-radio host Laura Ingraham, per The Hill: "I wish I had that particular line back."

He went on to say:
"…if you read President Kennedy’s text, while there were certainly some very important things and good things he said in that, there were some things that triggered in my opinion the privatization of faith and I think that’s a bad thing. I think we need to have a free exercise of religion in this country and it’s important for those First Amendment freedoms to be alive and well in America and I think they are threatened here in America as we’ve seen by President Obama, not by Rick Santorum."

Between you and Romney strapping his dog to the roof, any reasonable person would see that republicans have nothing in 2012!

He won't, it will be Romney, it was always going to be Romney. But a man can dream.
Most people walk back after they throw up. The mess is still there. I don't think anyone will forget this statement, and only a Republican could vote for him after every thing he's said since he won his hat trick and decided to speak his real mind.

Ricky seems to confuse freedom of religion with freedom to stuff his religion down our throats. Sorry, Ricky, you don't get to do that. If you think that's oppression, that's just one more reason you're not qualified for the White House. Oh, yeah, one more thing. Last week Santorum infuriated the entire nation of Holland - no small feat, by the way - by accusing them of state-sanctioned murder of the Dutch elderly. Now, he manages to piss, excuse me, puke all over the memory of one of the most beloved leaders in American history. I shudder to think what he'll say for an encore.
I'm confused. Santorum was 2-years-old when JFK made that speech. Did he really say that he understood it and disagreed with it?
I fully believe that Santorum may have vomited when the speech was made. But, not because of his intellectual disagreement with the speech. More likely it was because his mother forgot to burp him after she fed him his bottle!

First is taking something completely out of context and restating it in a completely twisted way. It is hoped that people WILL listen to JFK's speech, and hear for themselves the correct interpretation of the First Amendment regarding Separation of Church and State, the thoughtful views on religious belief being personal and even sacred, and that as POTUS JFK said he is an American FIRST and a Catholic second.
But NO, fundamentalist F#@%$ like Santorum have a persecution complex from repeated regurgitation (if ya wanna talk about "throw up") within the "isn't that special" Echo Chamber they live in with false claims about religion being excluded from the "public square" (LIE) and not having "freedom" (LIE). It never occurs to these imbeciles that forcing their religious views on others is the real loss of freedom. All they have to do is go to Iran or Afghanistan to see how truly free we are here in the USA, both to believe as we choose or not forced to believe anything we don't choose.
What these religious zealots like Santorum are upset about is not having Christian prayer and courses on creationism in public (tax-paid) schools, the Ten Commandments posted in public (tax-paid) buildings from schools to courthouses (though only three commandments have anything to do with secular law), and most of all their real belief that only Christians should rule the country. Use of this victim card as a guise for theocracy is old, unacceptable, and needs to be ended now!
This is just the tip of the iceberg for religious radicals like Santorum. Once again, taking President Obama's speech out of context, Santorum ranted about how higher learning is bad because it is a way for "liberal" professors to indoctrinate our youth. OMG! Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney both pander to the crazies with this crap even though they both have college degrees as well as graduate degrees. Aside from the US already falling behind the rest of the world in education needed to compete in the global economy, what parent doesn't want their children to have higher learning?!

You fear the religous right as if they are going to force you to do something reprehensible, life threatening, causative of bodily harm....you cite prayer...when do prayers hurt anyone? At the very least, it is so many ritualized words and sayings, and by that definition, what is there to fear. I fear a government that will throw human lives away and expect me to be all right with it. We are being prepared for that reality in inches and increments, desensitized with things like "end of life counseling" instead of "we are pulling the plug on grandma"...whichever phrase you choose, the government through the healthcare bill has already given themselves the authority to determine who lives and dies by simply denying medical coverage over a certain age of for certain conditions (and if we even allow that small crack, it will widen over time to take in a much wider definition) Without even defining at what point life begins, or when a child is actually a child and a US citizen, the government has put in place the "right to terminate a pregnancy, abortion....(how far is it from mandatory screenings for genetic problems or birth defects to be accompanied by "counseling" to end the pregnancy and try again?) Religion, for those who are not believers, should have no problem to hurt you in any way....you don't believe in the repurcussions for failing to live up to the ideals....as for bible based laws...pretty much all the laws throughout the world have a nodding acquaintance with the ten commandments. I think it is all pretty much universally accepted that stealing from one another is bad, and that killing one another is bad, and profanity and vulgarity are not neccessarily good things. We have laws on the books to protect us from libel and slander which is kind of covered in the 8th commandment, and messing around with somebody else's spouse is not a great idea on a whole bunch of levels, let alone strict morality...so how is that such a negative and scary thing. It is the same set of guidelines that civilized society has agreed to down through the millenium regardless of which doctrine or faith...pretty darn similar stuff. What I don't get, is that when somebody stands up for the time honored and tested rules of conduct for people in a civilized society, they suddenly, by definition, must be religious right wing zealots instead of people who would like that all of us can go through life without having undue worry for the safety of ourselves, our family, our personal belongings, our good name....you won't accomplish that safety without some pretty basic and generally agreed upon rules.

Your argument is flawed. For instance, take the First Commandment. "I am the Lord your God. You shall not place other gods before me." As a Catholic, I have no problem accepting this commandment. But, what about people who are Hindu? I believe it is wrong to force this commandment on them. Apparently, you have no problem forcing this "rule" on non-Christians.

Your comment on the Affordable Health Care Act is incredibly ignorant. "End of life counseling" advises a person of their choices such as living will, "do not resuscitate" orders (decided by the patient in advance...NOT the state). I won't even address the "death panels" as they were debunked over 2 years ago.

Fundamentalism Gone Wild is due in part to the right-wing propaganda machine of FOX Noise and Hate Radio, and commentators like Glenn Beck, Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, etc. replacing William F. Buckley and other right-wing journalists who once used Rule of Reason. The right-wing radicalism has gone into overreach as well due to the Tea Party threatening to "primary" more moderate (i.e., sane) candidates in the Republican Party.
Interesting is how candidates are going to start being "primaried" from the center, and even the Left. For example, any politician who votes to force women to have medically-unnecessary ultrasounds or for "personhood" legislation will be campaigned against by women's groups. High time! People should not fear their government -- government should fear the people. All people, the mainstream -- not just fringe Teabaggers. We need more groups to track the right-wing politicians votes for these extreme bills, and then advertise it before elections.
But do not think the election is guaranteed for President Obama. The radical right-wing will turn out to vote, regardless of how crappy their candidates are. If people want to be safe from Santorum and his ilk, they must get out and vote to re-elect the president, and to give him a congress that will work together and work with him. Obama/Biden - 2012!

Let's drill down and examine Santorum's statement on education. Higher learning is bad because "liberal" professors indoctrinate the students VERSUS home schooling, private parochial schools, or tax-paid vouchers for Christians to send their children to private schools that teach creationism (NOT going to happen). And please explain Sue and other Santorum-supporters which is indoctrinating kids?
It's religion that brain-washes children from the day they are born, with anti-intellectualism, treaching against science (evolution, climate change, etc.) and anything contrary to a narrow interpretation of the Bible. It's the Flat Earth Society all over again -- Not just going backward to the 1950s, but back to the Dark Ages. How many times must the Church attack progress, knowledge for the masses, and enlightenment? It's the 21st Century, and still we must be subjected to this insidious mentality -- Enough!
GreenTimer -- For the right-wing, the opposite of privatization is socialism. So I take this to mean that Santorum wants religion embraced by the state, in other words theocracy. What the far-right really want is Big Government in reverse. All entitlements, trust funds, and programs for the middle class and poor--including public education, should be privatized. Santorum's Evangelical Catholicism on the other hand should be "socialized."
He feels he can constantly talk about his religion as if it matters. The fact that Obama wanted churches health coverage to cover birth control and abortions was an attack on his freedom of religion when in fact by not giving these women the same coverage as other women is a religious overreach . There are women of all faith who have opted for abortion and have used birth control. I'm a Catholic, but I know I'm the only one who has to pay for my sins, besides Jesus. To a lot of people these things aren't sins and most importantly it doesn't matter if they are or not because we have the freedom of religion, not the freedom to force our religion on others. Men have it easy, we have absolutely no idea what it's like to bear children, and no right to dictate what women do with their bodies and their lives.

I work in healthcare and have had the privilege of being present when someone with a terminal non-survivable disease/injury has passed on. First let me clarify some things you have all wrong. If a hospital takes medicare/medicade they CAN NOT turn anyone away. Most hospital systems are non-profit and donate millions of dollars each year in written off hospital bills for people that can't afford it. There has never been a time in my career when family members or closest friends did not make the decision to withdraw care based on what they knew of their loved one's wishes. The state has never tried to intervene nor should they. End of life counseling is nothing more than getting YOUR wishes on a legal document when it comes to what measures you would have taken if you are unable to make decisions for yourself. So if YOU choose to let modern medicine flog you and keep you alive to the painful bitter end then we are happy to oblige. Modern medicine can keep a shell of a body alive for a long long time with the use of feeding tubes, ventilators and medication, but that does not mean we should. Now let's not forget Republicon Ricky's party would just outright deny healthcare to those who can't afford it. Find me some Jesus in that??? I have an idea live and let live. DOn't shove your fairy tale down my throat and we will continue to let you believe what you want and praying to who ever tickles your fancy.
So Santorum thinks the "privatization of faith" is a bad thing? Well unless your Tim Tebow it's a great thing! What's more private than your faith and religious convictions. People who wear their religious beliefs on their sleeves are asking for conflict and judgement. Santorum has a better chance of walking to Hawaii than he does of becoming President. He will absolutely not even get the nomination so he's just flapping his gums.
With 33 states considering voter ID legislation, it will take more than getting out and voting. It will take a consentrated effort of getting out and helping people to get the ID necessary to vote. As most of those being affected by this 'witch hunt' are most likely liberal or lean toward the Democratic party, the loss of votes could have impact. Time to call local party offices to find out how to help. And if there are Republican neighbors that have been disenfranchised by this silliness, well, help them too. Many older voters were born at home, or have no birth certificate, so have no idea how to go about getting one, or can't get to the local DMV for a ID card. And because there is a cost for ID, money will affect their options too.
The worst part (beside the intent of these legislative bills) is because there's been little coverage by the media, voters could actually turn up to vote in Nov and then be turned away.

Just have to say that I was starting to get really frightened that too many sheeple were buying into the lies the GOP candidates have been spewing (pun intended!). After reading the responses to this article, I'm feeling a lot more secure in the decency and intelligence of Americans if these comments are truly representative of the majority. I'm so dreading the rest of this political season and what other garbage is going to be attempted to be forced down our throats. Please, please, please... research the candidates, what they stand for and what they want to attempt to get done should they be elected. As for me, I'll be voting for Obama again (as will my husband, a registered republican)... as far as I'm concerned he's done an excellent job considering all the roadblocks that have been put up to make it incredibly difficult for me to do a thing! JoAnne--I think you're right---we should boldly declare the statute of limitations on apologizing for Santorum by Pennsylvanians to have run out and we are off the hook. Plus he now lives in Virginia so he is their problem! I looked up the map of his defeat in 2006 and it reminded me of the classic line by James Carville---Pennsylvania---you have Pittsburgh at one end, Philadelphia at the other and Alabama in between!
I suspect Mitt doesn't actually carry a wallet--he has staff for that (except on the days when he does his own laundry).

There are days when I truly am afraid to come out from under the covers!!! Yesterday, here in Michigan was one of them. There were crazies out in full force -- spewing their hate and faith at anyone who they suspected was a DEM/Individual allowed to vote!! I can attest that I did not vote yesterday - although I was tempted to vote for Ron Paul (just pulling a '92 Romney there hehehe). But - I just could not find it in my soul to actually have to put on paper somewhere that I was a TeaPublican even if only for a day!!!!

Rick, "free" exercise must be FREE. That is, it has to be free from governmental restriction AND governmental support. There must be a clear distinction and a "Separation of Church and State" especially when the term emphasized is not taken out of context. JFK was and continues to be the liberal democrats "H0" of the Cath0l1c Church. JFK was an adulterer and philanderer just like RFK; Ted Kennedy (Mary Jo); and MLK; Even as they played their alter boy image to the hilt. The Vatican can't manage the Church without homosexuals and pedophiles running rampant as they (no chaste saintly ones - ask Joe Paterno) mess with the women of the "BINGO". This isn't about something as silly as a declaration of Sainthood. The Constitutional separation b/w religion and government is an important part of our national heritage which Santorum (and most Republicans) try to render meaningless. The JFK speech was a fine example of honoring America's religious freedom while understanding that our laws are not found in religious text. Religion deals with beliefs, while government deals with actions.

The fact is JFK was absolutely correct in his affirmation of what our founding fathers believed: separation of church and state. All that other junk you spouted is just another reason in favor of separation of church and state.
