Flashback: Romney voted in '92 Dem primaries

As Mitt Romney criticizes Rick Santorum for encouraging Democrats to vote in today's Michigan GOP primary -- "I think Republicans have to recognize there's a real effort to kidnap our primary process," he said today -- it is worth remembering that Romney said he voted for a Democrat in the 1992 primaries to help the GOP.

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney greets supporters during a stop at his Michigan campaign headquarters in Livonia February 28, 2012.

During his '08 White House bid, it was revealed that Romney voted for Paul Tsongas (D) in the 1992 Democratic primaries. Romney's explanation at the time: "When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for a Republican."

Here's the transcript from a Feb. 18, 2007 ABC interview:

ABC: Let me talk about your political journey. You were an independent, a registered independent in the 1980s. You voted for Paul Tsongas as Democrat in the 1992 primaries. Now you've describe yourself as a Reagan Republican.

MITT ROMNEY: Kind of a mischaracterization. In Massachusetts if you register as an independent you can you vote on either the Republican or Democrat primary. When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for a Republican… But let me tell you, in the general election, I don't recall ever once voting for anyone other than a Republican. So, yeah, as an independent I'll go in and play in their primary but I'm a Republican and have been through my life. I was with Young Republicans when I was in college back at Stanford. But a registered independent so I could vote in either primary.

At his press avail today, Romney was asked about his vote for Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic primaries.

Romney responded: "It’s very different running for -- being a candidate for president, buying ads, and telling Democrats to go, to go mess into a Republican primary and to vote against me."

He continued, "In my case, I was certainly voting against the Democrat who I thought was the person I thought would be the worst leader of our nation. In this case, as I recall, it was Bill Clinton. I wanted someone other than Bill Clinton. And certainly and against -- I voted against Ted Kennedy, Tip O’Neill, and Bill Clinton. It seemed like a good group to be against."

Mitt Romney gets grief for being a flip flopper, the criticism is misplaced. He's never really changed his mind, he just keeps changing his story.

paidmyfee - Sorry pal, but you are several quarters short of full roll. Gitmo has remained open to be utilized as an indoctrination center for Cornservatives during the POTUS's second term. At least that's what Glen Beck said! So please, go along quietly, so nobody gets hurt. They certainly have a long and difficult job at Gitmo, in regards to your case but I have HOPE, they can CHANGE you for the better. Good luck.

People just calm down. There is no need to worry about any of the Primaries/Caucasus because this is going to be a brokered convention.

I have it from an reliable source that the Repubs are secretly holding their ace-in-the-hole guy for Tampa.

    SATAN (R) 2012!*

Wonder who will be his running mate... Saddam Hussain? LMFAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

*Disclaimer for those that are humoristically challenged. It's a joke. Really. It is. Not kidding about that. Or was I? hmmmmm....

So. Not that different than what a lot of Democrats are doing by voting for Santorum. He's even weaker than Ron Paul. He's completely unelectable. He'll never hold up in a General Election campaign. He's only in this race because he's been preaching to the choir, who are the only ones voting. Go, 'Slick' Rick, GO!!! We need a landslide in November, not only for Obama, but for the House and Senate Democrats, too!!!

It's no problem that Romney voted in 92.

It's his hypocrisy in saying it's somehow wrong just because he's the intended target.

I mean what's good for the goose is good for the gander...right?

I can understand voting for the person he perceives to be the weakest Democrat candidate. However, it's hard to justify voting for whoever he thinks would be the worst person in office. That's just stupid...and Mitt is not stupid.

Yet, he states that as a justification.

that is 10 years ago , we all had different reasons 10 years ago what does that have anyhting to do with his election now

it shows his character. If he has been, oh, a teenager 10 years ago that's one thing, but its a good indicator of his character now.

its hardly a terrible thing, just another example of his thought process.

I don't give a damn about their religion. I just want the country back on its feet and be a nice place to live again instead of having to listen to and read about all the damn political discord

Than you should not vote for obama than if that is what you want. 7 states are suing because of obama policies, Obama has never held a private sector job , his political experience is all from chicago the most corrupt city in the entire US. from our choices Romney is the washington outsider who has proven success in the private sector he doesn't have woman problems he's not forcing his religious beliefs on people he is our best choice out of the bunch I wish people would just realize that, Ron Paul is actually probably the better choice but he probably would not beat obama, santorum&newt are just Washington trained insiders that will be no better than Obama

more people are on food stamps, gas has what doubled since obama has taken office, post office is loosing tons of jobs, they want to raise the corporate tax when it has been proven that raising the corporate tax brings in less money the Uk tried it and they brought in 5% less the corperation just moved their money else where, sylndra, fast furiuos, the list goes on it's not Bushes fault anymore he has been president for over 3 years and things are worse if things where better gas should be at least 2.20 - 2.90 unemployment 6% instead we have $4.00 gas and at least a real 11% unemployment their are more job cuts than openings and the jobs available are lower paying. debt crisis obama spent twice as mush money as bush did in 8 years I really don't understand peoples logic. Obama has never held a real job and he is a chicago politician that right their shoudl give everyone the willies

plsstop, is exactly right. Please stop! First, it is "then", not "than" in this situation.

Second, more citizens were on food stamps under W than there are under Obama.

Third, it is "losing", not "loosing". And I am just going to stop there. You are obviously not very bright.

            Huh? Try using a period.

And now I will continue. "Corporations", not "corperations." "Bush's", not "Bushes." "There", not "their." And lastly, you post makes no sense, and is false. What is the "sylndra, fast furious." reference?

hockeyref, you have no idea what the heck you're talking about with regard to you food stamp comment.

In December 2008, the number of people on food stamps was 31.5 million.

            http://dailycaller.com/2012/02/28/lightsquared-ceo-resigns-amid-revelations-of-companys-proximity-to-obama-white-house/

In December 2011, the number of people on food stamps was 46 million.

            http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2011/12/fact-checking-newt-gingrichs-food-stamps-claims/

Unlike Obama's math tells you, that's an INCREASE not a decrease.

" Obama has never held a private sector job"

What in the world does that have to do with being President? The United States is not a corportion.

How many "private sector" jobs did Eisenhower have?

If that's all that matters, let's just elect the CEO of Exxon or Walmart every four years.

I know that teaching at a college is probably not considered a private sector job, but it is my understanding that President Obama taught and lectured Constitutional Law at Chicago Law School. During that time he was an attorney at the law firm of Miner, Barnhill and Galland, which should qualify his working in the private sector.

Voting for someone who would be "the weakest opponent" of the opposing party is "Immoral".

The same Immoral activity that Romney used in the 80's and 90's when he stole the Defined Benefit Pension plan assets with the Merger and Aquisition scam and got away with it. Every Baby boomer needs to know that Romney's money came from their stolen defined benefit pensions of deferred income they put into the plans he stole.

Read the book "Retirement Heist" by Ellen Schultz, a pulitzer winning investigative reporter for the Wall Street Journal about how pensions were stolen by Romney and others in the 80's and 90's, about 100,000 pension plans.

BTW, the 2.4 million dollar surplus Clinton had while he was in office hardly qualifies as unprecedented.

people, corporations, states sue all the time. for example: "Eight states are suing the Bush administration over new rules that block expansion of a health insurance program for children from low-income families."

"Nine states today filed a lawsuit challenging new Bush Administration regulations that gut a key provision of the federal Clean Air Act."

"Nine states have sued the administration of President George W. Bush for lenient automotive fuel economy standards that they say worsen an energy crunch and contribute to air pollution and climate change."

The right leaning court says that's unconstitutional, so corporations, rich guys and unions can give unlimited money to finance "issue ads". Of course, they knew that the rich guys and corporations had a whole lot more money than the unions. Obama has a few rich guys in his corner, but he's getting lot's of small donations. So does Ron Paul. Ron Paul is nuts, but I believe he's honestly nuts.

The top three Repubs are all batty. One is claiming that President Obama is Satan,
another one can't act human (maybe a robot) and the third is an egomaniac
living in the 1900’s. Personally I think the whole things is ridiculous and
President Obama will once again have my vote. At times I am so ashamed to be an
American; due to the atrocious lies, obvious racism and ghastly bickering that
comes out of the Repubs mouths. They are still trying to use fear and more fear
of the “Muslim” or the fear of the "black man" to scare everyone.
They should all be ashamed of themselves; as should the rest of the ignorant bigoted
                                  Americans.

You should be ashamed, because you are not acting like an American. Just because one disagrees with you or the left wing, we are racists. In fact, you are the racist or even saying that. We Americans are capable of disagreeing and discussing the difference. You resort to name calling. Again, you should be ashamed!!!

Laughing out load! Yes, refering to the President as Hitler, a foodstamp president, exclaiming he's a Muslim, needing varification of his birth certificate and finally, a snob because he believes in higher education. Yep, that doesn't sound ingnorant at all nor racist, thanks for proving me wrong.

That may be true, however "foodstamp" President is highly viewed as a racist statement. Many people agree with that and some have even asked Newt to stop using that phrase. But, he does not...IMO.

Those that view it as a racist statement are the democrats. They are the one's who use race all the time. When I've pointed out that not once was a person's skin color used in the statement, I've been told by democrats that it's implied. To the party fixated on race, they interject it into everything.

Of course, with the economy improving, it's all they've got: "GAY PEOPLE ARE BURNING AMERICAN FLAGS!" That should get them riled up.

This is completely different than what Santorum has done. Santorum has recruited the opposition party to come vote for him just to beat another fellow candidate in the same party. He is also doing so on the notion that if they elect him as the candidate, Obama will have a better shot at beating him. No democrat recruited Romney to vote for him back then, and just as when many republicans voted for Hillary over Obama, Hillary didn't campaign for the republicans to do so. This is a garbage story but typical for what is seen on this ridiculous website.

Mitt Romney has proven time and time again that he has NO ethical standards at all. He is always willing what is best for him regardless of it's impact on anyone else.

                                                                      1. In business he's been willing to let siphon money from businesses and letting them fail and letting the government handle the obligations of the company.

                                                                      2. He's railed against Santorum voting for earmarks while having asked for them to help the Salt Lake City Olympics.

                                                                      3. He's staunchly Pro-Choice when he runs for Governor in the Liberal state of Massachussets, but now trying to win the GOP nomination he says he's always been anti-choice-anti-abortion.

                                                                      4. He's a leader in pushing for Romney/Obama health care in Massachussets. But now is staunchly against it for the country as a whole.

                                                                      5. He's disgusted with the idea of Democrats voting against him in Michigan but is fine with trying to spoil Democratic elections in Massachussets.

                                                                      Romney has no conscience whatsoever.
