Flashback: Romney voted in '92 Dem primaries

As Mitt Romney criticizes Rick Santorum for encouraging Democrats to vote in today's Michigan GOP primary -- "I think Republicans have to recognize there's a real effort to kidnap our primary process," he said today -- it is worth remembering that Romney said he voted for a Democrat in the 1992 primaries to help the GOP.

Rebecca Cook / Reuters

U.S. Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney greets supporters during a stop at his Michigan campaign headquarters in Livonia February 28, 2012.

During his '08 White House bid, it was revealed that Romney voted for Paul Tsongas (D) in the 1992 Democratic primaries. Romney's explanation at the time: "When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for a Republican."

Here's the transcript from a Feb. 18, 2007 ABC interview:

ABC: Let me talk about your political journey. You were an independent, a registered independent in the 1980s. You voted for Paul Tsongas as Democrat in the 1992 primaries. Now you've describe yourself as a Reagan Republican.

MITT ROMNEY: Kind of a mischaracterization. In Massachusetts if you register as an independent you can you vote on either the Republican or Democrat primary. When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for a Republican… But let me tell you, in the general election, I don't recall ever once voting for anyone other than a Republican. So, yeah, as an independent I'll go in and play in their primary but I'm a Republican and have been through my life. I was with Young Republicans when I was in college back at Stanford. But a registered independent so I could vote in either primary.

At his press avail today, Romney was asked about his vote for Tsongas in the 1992 Democratic primaries.

Romney responded: "It’s very different running for -- being a candidate for president, buying ads, and telling Democrats to go, to go mess into a Republican primary and to vote against me."

He continued, "In my case, I was certainly voting against the Democrat who I thought was the person I thought would be the worst leader of our nation. In this case, as I recall, it was Bill Clinton. I wanted someone other than Bill Clinton. And certainly and against -- I voted against Ted Kennedy, Tip O’Neill, and Bill Clinton. It seemed like a good group to be against."

So, what you are saying is, Willard's flip-flopping roots run deep?

This guy would sell his mother if it would earn him a vote!

Willard has some balls crying foul about Santorum...

Hey Democratic Michigan voters?

Have you voted for a Teapublican today?

Wouldn't you think these politicians would figure out that today's technology means that everything they have said and done on the record can be found pretty easily? Romney has been running for President for 5 years and yet is constantly caught off guard by things. How would he do as President when split second decisions are made at 3 AM?

Here is a quote from Romney earlier today in the previous FR article:

"I think Republicans have to recognize there’s a real effort to kidnap our primary process," Romney said. "And if we want Republicans to nominate the Republican who takes on Barack Obama, I need Republicans to get out and vote and say no to the ... dirty tricks of a desperate campaign."

Here is a quote from Romney back then taken from above:

When there was no real contest in the Republican primary, I'd vote in the Democrat primary, vote for the person who I thought would be the weakest opponent for a Republican…

Incredible change of position.

What Mittens is saying is, "I did what Rickyboy is promoting in his robocalls", huh? Funny thing Rickyboy's economic philosophy (including the GM bail-out) is practically the same as Mittens. Neither is for the working-class/middle-class...two deeply flawed individuals which makes them terrible candidates.

Uh, Feisty, it's called an open primary for a reason. A registered voter can vote for whomever he wants. Democrats do it all the time in an attempt to select a weak Republican candidate against their own candidate in the national election. But, I understand your liberal compulsion to attack a conservative for any reason....whether it's ridiculous or not.

@Gary 420 -- Who cares what Romney does in 2012 - especially since the Republicans are attempting to hide his record?

Unemployment improving. Green shoots in manufacturing. First trade surplus with petroleum products in decades.

Deficit going down with the end of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Defense and discretionary budget cuts through bipartisan legislation. Entitlement cuts from ACA (Obamacare).

No tax increases in 15 years - new, bipartisan tax cuts passed recently.

GPD growing and the growth rate increasing each year.

Gas prices returning to same level as six months ago - still below prices in May, 2011.

Dictators are falling all around the world. More nukes are being destroyed than are being built after ratification of START.

Obama's plan is to continue to ignore the Republican politics of defeat - as we all should.

No? Are you aware of a fix Virginia Democrat? Do tell! From what I know about elections, anyone can be defeated. Anyone can win. Maybe you are forgetting one thing... Amazing how people on MSNBS take it as Rommney being sneaky when in fact the story is highlighting a DNC strategy.

Really all this highlights that our election process is flawed. States are different and it doesn't give a true reflection of what people want. What they should do is have National primaries on ONE day. Pick whoever you want from whatever party you want. Then have a final election with the top vote getters from DNC, GOP and Ind.

The error is in your ways but the point of the story isn't how Romney voted in 92 it's that he's complaining about others doing the same thing today. Personally, I understand that he "used" the rules to his benefit.

But given that fact, Romney shouldn't be whining about others playing the game.

Romney has proven, time and time again, that he thinks"rules" are for the other guy and that they shouldn't apply to him.

Nerm, let me help you with some facts.

Unemployment is higher than when Obama took office. It is the weakest bounceback from a major recession since they have been measuring data. I agree that it is moving in the right direction. Too little, too late. Obama's policies have made it worse.

Obama's own deficit projections show it continuing to increase. Counting "not spending on wars" as a reduction in the deficit is a tricky gimmick that thinking people saw through weeks ago.

I am sure there will be defense cuts. Agree with you there.

Obamacare will not reduce anything. It will be the largest entitlement program since Medicare. I don't even think the White House believes the lies anymore that costs will be reduced under Obamacare.

No new taxes in 15 years is a GOP accomplishment, and not for lack of trying by democrats. Obama has promised to raise taxes in January of 2013. His tax increase will be the largest in history unless by some miracle people wake up and vote him out of office. Of course, we still have no tax reform.

2011 GDP was 1.9%. Again, one of the most anemic post recession recoveries on record.

During the same time for Ronald Reagan after recovering from the Jimmy Carter recession, 1983 GDP was 3.8% and 1984 GDP growth was 7.8%. The Obama "recovery" is less than half as robust as the Reagan recovery.

Gas prices are increasing, not decreasing. Try picking up a newspaper. If MSNBC is your only source for news, you are getting 10% of the real story. Unlike most of you, I am bright enough to realize that high gas prices stem from many market factors. However, I still recall the hysterical screeching when gas prices rose under Bush. Liberals equal hypocrisy.

The situation in Iran and North Korea are truly perilous. Hopefully, you fella knows what he is doing. I must point out that the world's problems did not magically subside when Obama took office. Another liberal myth is shattered!

Please recall that Nixon, Reagan , Clinton and both Bushes had a lot more to do with START than Obama has. Glad that the Russkies are giving up nukes. The issue is Iran and N Korea.

Ahh, Double-face Mitt has struck out again!!! So apparently encouraging Democrats to vote for your opponent is bad, and yet you crossed party lines to help your own party. What a hypocrite. It doesn't matter what the office was for; if you did it, you have no right to tell another person that you cannot do it. For that matter, I wonder why the US has the right to tell other nations that they cannot get nuclear weapons when we have them?? It's not that I want the whole world to have nukes; its just that America seems hypocritical, especially since we're the only nation to have ever USED them.

Sorry Mitt, but Americans aren't buying your bulls***. We know what happens when you give the GOP a share in government; they don't compromise, they filibuster like hell, and they don't do ANYTHING for the good of all Americans, unless they're part of the 1% or conservative. How many more of these friggen primaries do we have to endure? Geeez this is getting very old. It's the same players making all the same complaints... Nothing new, nothing old... just the same ole same ole. This is getting really very boring. I think we all get it. Liberals hate republicans... no matter who they are...

Let me ask... aren't you getting a little tired of voicing all the same complaints on a daily basis? What's the purpose? Venting frustration? This is like the middle of the Groundhog Day movie where Bill Murray finally discovers no matter what he does, the next day will be the same...

I think voting for Santorum to help Obama is a mistake... better to let a pushover like Romney win Michigan, than to risk going to a Brokered Convention, where a stronger Republican candidate like a Marco Rubio, or a Jeb Bush or a Chris Christie could potentially get the nod.

I'm also not afraid that Rick Santorum could ever beat Obama in the general election, on the contrary, I know he would ooze into the cracks of the floor under the pressure of a debate with a real speaker like President Obama! I would actually enjoy seeing it. I think it's low to stoop to their level and they're imploding just fine by themselves without any help from the other side. Besides, when has Michael Moore not been the most extreme liberal out there?

In truth, that's why he is complaining, Helen. Romney is most likely going to win, but perhaps not by enough to appease the establishment who might start thinking he should have won his home state more easily. This Democratic voter thing is just prepping the counterargument.

I suspect the Romney campaign launched those NRA robocalls itself, to give it a second line of argument - the Santorum-is-dirty-or-we-would-have-done-better defense. All just in case. They are still hoping for a 15-point win or better. But these guys are pros, and you have to prepare for every foreseeable possibility.

Note - I'm not saying that Santorum is above the NRA dirty trick. It's just that this one was obviously going to be caught, quickly, and I can't see campaign professionals doing something that is nearly impossible to get away with. It cuts into Santorum's true advantage, in the contest against Romney. Romney has money, organization, campaign experience at this level, an arguably stronger resume. Meanwhile Santorum is almost an insurgent candidate, and he's a bit goofy and unpolished at times. But he seems more honest and trustworthy (probably all campaign appearances; all these guys are politicians).

For Romney, cutting into that trustworthiness gap may be critical to ending this threat to his nomination hopes. So, paint the guy as a dirty trickster.

    Shame on Kidnapper Mitt Romney.

For over 5 years now we've been reminded time and time again that Mitt Romney will do or say anything to become President. Senator McCain proved it 4 years ago.

The only reason Romney is doing well today is because the Supreme Court decided corporations can spend unlimited money to buy an election. The entire primary season, we've seen Romney's billionaires outspend every candidate by wide margins and yet he barely wins.

During the fall, America must take a stand on whether to vote for corporations to run America (Romney) or if America belongs to We the People (Obama).

Yes, Obama voted "present" 129 times as a state senator, however, these votes represented a small portion — a little more than 3 percent — of the roughly 4,000 votes he cast as a member of the state Senate, as per FactCheck.org

Of course, presenting the entire picture would require integrity, of which you have none.

RebelWCause, you have your facts backwards ther buddy. There was no problem with Obama's record as U.S. Senator... that inaccurate rumor was started by knucklehead-in-chief Sarah Palin who claimed that Obama had 150 "present" votes in the U.S. Senate (actually referring to his record as a state senator in Illinois).

from mediamatters: "While it's true that Obama's absentee rate skyrocketed in the third and fourth years of his term, when he was running for president, we found that he cast votes on more than 180 separate days in 2005 and 2006, combined. And that undercounts his total days on the job, because the Senate does not necessarily vote every day that it's in session, and because we didn't count the (admittedly smaller) number of voting days he was present in 2007 and 2008."

The same thing happened to McCain while he was running... he missed 68% of votes while campaigning, and for the entire year of 2007, actually missed 79 more votes than Obama. But you NEVER hear him being criticized by the radical right.

Concerning the worldwide issues and the American issues that have gone unchanged or unfixed, I would say he is still thinking he is a Senator. All I hear is "Present!" followed by "YOU LIE!!" HA, Go Wilson! There are points in time where living in South Carolina certainly does have its humor, and I laugh at the entire bunch. Tired of the pandering and the political back and forth on issues. Every politician does it, and quite honestly, the media invokes a bi-polar response with many of its questions.

Now, all you individuals running amok stating how Romney is flip-flopping, how about your beloved Obama? I believe he eventually flip-flopped on Guantanomo did he not? I believe his job creation strategy wasn't a great highlight of his presidency these past 4 years either, especially with the veto of the Keystone pipeline? Notice the "Big Corporate industries" are side-stepping his veto to assure that the Keystone pipeline continues WITHOUT his authorization (because it won't be necessary any longer). Mr. Magicpants, the two-faced, double talkin' hypocrite should note Bill Clinton is one of the best Presidents this country ever had. Record surpluses, no soldiers murdered in wars of choice and a roaring economy....things only a teabagger can hate.

I agree that Clinton was probably the best president of my lifetime and I'm 40.

Reagan was pretty good, but he had some issues.

The fact that Romney thought Clinton was a bad choice for the country just shows how out of touch with reality he is. Clinton had issues with his personal life, but as a president he was a golden child. Everyone liked him, he built a surplus and everything was going our way. So of course the Republicans tried to take him down for getting some. Don't start the whole it wasn't about the blow job it was about him lying to congress about it. Congress had no place in asking the question. Now if Hillary had asked he would have been in trouble. That is not a woman I would want mad at me.

Against Bill Clinton? When Clinton was elected the DOW was at 3300, when he left it was over 11,000

When Bush was Elected DOW was 11,000, when he left it was 8,000 and the country was in the dumper

I think Romney finally took a stand on something. He's for dirty politics as long as they aren't used against him.

yea Obama tooted his horn about bailing out Government Motors and Fiat. And how about those $7K bonuses paid to all of the union workers instead of paying the taxpayers back. Yea that's something to be proud of. Isn't it nice to be one of the favorites.

And that is an outstanding speech. wake up sheeple, if you are not one of Obama's favored voting constituencies (union, minority, illegal alien, welfare recipeint) you are subsidizing his re-election.

Young people wake up because you are the useful idiots. Tell you what give me your credit card and I'll be sure to buy some good stuff with it trust me. Don't worry I'll get some rich guy to pay the card off. Don't you worry. He is mortgaging your future by refusing to address the national debt.

Until the Church starts paying taxes like other businesses (yes, they are a business), they should not be able to say a word in the political forum besides, "thank you!".

So your argument is that the Catholic church shouldn't have to play by the same rules as all other employers in the country?

Sounds like you think the church is above the laws of man. Only as an Athiest that means I should be scared to point of going after the church as they are a priveledged entity that threatens my lifestyle. Clearly if they are above the laws of man they can kill any time they feel like it, so I should respond in kind.
