Pro-Rick Santorum robo calls, using the National Rifle Association's name, are running in Michigan ahead of tomorrow's primary, an NRA member in Michigan emails First Read.
The call compares Santorum and Romney's NRA records, urges members to vote for Santorum, and uses Romney's own words against him.
But the NRA, which hasn't endorsed a candidate, says it's not running the calls.
"We're not doing anything," said Andrew Arulanandam, director of Public Affairs for NRA-ILA, or Institute for Legislative Action. "Our position is anyone would be better than Barack Obama. It's absolutely wrong. We are not paying for anything. We're not spending one cent. That is not us -- completely, unequivocally not us."
Arulanandam said there's no way a campaign or someone supporting a campaign, could have gotten their member list. But someone could get another list, like a hunting-license list, that could have some overlap.
The call tells members that if they care about their right to own a gun, then this message is critical. It notes that Santorum received an A-plus rating from the NRA and calls him a a friend of sportsmen and hunters. Romney, on the other hand, is derided as a disaster for gun owners and uses his own words against him.
"I don't line up with the NRA," Romney is heard saying, replaying his comments from his 1994 Senate bid.
Then, the ad urges Michigan residents not to vote for a moderate from Massachusetts and not to let him destroy gun rights and then plays the Romney quote again.

"Those who hammer their guns into plows, will plow the fields for those who don't." - Thomas Jefferson
I believe that it is the responsibility of each individual to decide for themselves what is right and what is wrong. Do your own research, formulate an opinion, look inside yourself at your core values, and vote from there. And if the NRA had as much pull as everyone seems to think that they do, how did the President get to be the President in the first place? Just curious...
Santorum knows no shame. A pro-life candidate bolstered by the gun lobby. What a hypocrite!!
Read the story again. It says that this is not the NRA and they don't know who is doing this. I hope they find out and make it public.
I thought that NRA stood for No Republicans Anymore.
So the NRA and gun lobby would rather have a theocrat like Santorum or a plutocrat like Romney in office instead of Obama out of some perceived threat to their firearms. Insane.
I tell you...these crazy tea partiers are destroying the Repub party... which is great news to me
I am not a gun owner, but my ex-husband is and was during our marriage, and now he is teaching our teens to shoot, but we both support reasonable gun laws...there has to be a way of keeping guns out of the hands of stupid, and crazy people...
and just when has Obama advocated limiting gun ownership? I do not remember it coming up even once, but to read the posts here, he was sending troops door to door collecting guns...
I just received a robo-call from the Rick Santorum For President group in Arizona (no NRA mention). The over-modulated woman on the phone couldn't even read the script smoothly and stumbled on the names of other Arizona losers who are supporting Santorum. It's laughable that a man who is soooooo religious and loves Jesus is soooo in favor of gun ownership. Now, I'm a card-carrying concealed carry firearm owning non-hunter and anytime I see a politician in bed with the NRA I first laugh and then shudder. Once, a very long time ago I was a member of the NRA, but over the years I came to see the organization as a blind juggernaut that opposed even reasonable legislation dealing with firearms. The NRA is almost always anti-government, suffers from many members who are not respectful of the president (gun show stickers and conversations defaming Obama) and appears, at length, just to be another organization to make money from public conflict. They exercise disproportionate influence in politics, selling out what's best for the country for insane access to firearms. As for Santorum, he is the poster child for how many idiots and uneducated voters are really out there. Scary, really scary.
I’m wondering if Jan Brewer has an alcohol problem? She has the look of somebody who has been over indulging for years. Then there was the time that she couldn’t complete a sentence when she was being interviewed.
Why or how on earth is that relevant to this discussion?
Unfortunately, the right to bear arms also includes the right to be shot.
At home, in school, on the street.
It's never going to stop; it's never going to get better.
I don't have a solution; there is no solution; live with it.
Try personal reponsibilty and mutual respect.....has worked well for humans over millennia.
Obolaro- Yes and even before Gods were invented. True social behavior doesn't need Gods.
Feisty and Bali, the law did not allow carrying in bars, it allowed carrying in places that serve liquor as long as you don't drink. That happens to include bars. The law already disallows carrying and drinking. The new law only allows law abiding citizens the right to be able to protect themselves in that situation. If they carry and drink they are breaking the law. By the way, criminals will carry illegally AND drink. They are CRIMINALS. Gun control laws only affect people who will obey laws.
By the way, every time someone pulls out his Glock and starts blasting, everyone who knew him says, "I knew he was crazy." That is the problem, not the gun.
Many years ago, the late animal protectionist Cleveland Amory had a great line about the NRA.
Amory said, "If we cant' trust them with typewriters, how can we trust them with guns?"
Other than that line, I don't 'do' gun fights...they always end up with, "Yuh huh" and "Nunh uh".
@Larry
Actually, the second amendment was put in because at the time, the entire continental army was a militia, formed of citizens with in some cases their own firearms.
Remember, that the second amendment states
Do they not read the Constitution? They quote it all the time, but have no Ideal what it says.
But wait, most gun owners have never been in a well regulated militia. So did our founders want people with guns to be well regulated?
Same lies they told about Obama and it worked. I remember one person voting for McCain because Obama was going to take his guns away and another person voting for McCain because Obama was going to raise his taxes. I asked if he makes over 250K a year and he said not even close. I wonder if he knows that Obama has lowered his taxes. This kind of stuff works. I'm sure the new republican governors didn't run on a platform of eliminating work's rights or women's rights just as Bush Jr. didn't run on a platform of war, torture and economic disaster. Not a surprise and all of the republican candidates are lying about each other and about Obama.
You are so right Bob. Tight gun control in Chicago.... consistently top 5 in the country in murder/rape. I don't know where Fiesty gets her bogus numbers but the real numbers are this: 58% of Americans
eligible voters are in favor of NO gun control as published recently by the LIBERAL NBC polls taken in November 2011.
The legal concealment of guns in this country has been on the rise over the past two years as more and more states allow it. Although I agree it is a sad situation when things like this happen at schools the facts are this: 2011 major crime rate in the top 10 populated cities in this country were down.
How do we know who is behind this?
Is it dirty. Not as dirty as the ads against Santorum.
Just google "Santorum" or bing "Santorum". The first hits are negitive/nasty.
bunny boi, We have children shot every week in Detroit. Last week a 9 month year old was shot in the head by a Gang driveby and a 82 year old was car jacked and had his leg broke. He crawled to the store while people stood and watched. Today a 6 year old was shot in his parents car. I carry a .380 with a CWP everywhere I go. I have a handicapped wife who can not run away, so i will stand and defend her. As I would for anyone who asked for assistance. Its a bizarre world where the former Democratic Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick (convicted Felon and under indictment) is invited to speak in the city he stole millions from and 200 people show up.
This seems like another attempt for Santorum to try to be relevant. I am really starting not to like the guy. His true colors are really coming out and it isn't appealing. He seems to try to pull anything out of his hat to try to convince voters that Romney is a bad guy. What's wrong with the story specifically? Santorum tries to link the NRA to his campaign. The organization doesn't support any one candidate. So why is Santorum suggesting there is a link? He then misquotes or maybe it is more fair to say that he tries to convince people that Romney is against the right to bare arms. He uses a quote which seems out of context all for his own benefit. Romney said he was not lining up with the NRA. That seems like a statement which can be taken several ways and the one way Santorum wants people to take it is wrong. Romney is not a hunter. He has gone several times with friends which have invited him to go but he is not an avid hunter. But nothing which I have found suggests Romney is not in support of our amendment for the right to have guns. If I was leaning anything toward Santorum before, I think his latest ads and comments have really turned me off. He simply seems like the little kid that is crying saying everyone is picking on him....I think I now know how my vote should go. I think I will take a stiff looking businessman in the oval office than one that sound like when he opens his mouth it sounds like a complaint about someone or something. I want someone to lead, and Santorum sound very much like Obama of late...so I think my vote is changing from Santorum to Mitt. The other guys just don't know they have lost already and should drop out....
nevermind
And to make things worse, Santorum is running his mouth and complaining that Obama should not be talking about more kids being able to go to college and that it is the government's way of controlling them or some stupid nonsense.
This guy is making his run all about his religion and trying to shove it down everyone's throats.
Kudos to Romney and Paul for not doing the same. Gingrich not so much. He is following in Santorum's footsteps using the religion card too.
Santorum is really getting scary.
One simple fact
Republicans are THE ONLY party to ever ban a firearm, The rhetoric against Democrats is just that, Rhetoric with little or no truth to it.
Obama first refused to renew the assault rifle ban, Which prompted the Tea Party to carry assault rifles to public meetings
Obama secondly repealed Reagan's ban on handguns in National parks
Find out facts before believeing ANYTHING a politician says
Bo we are in the Twilight Zone- only you and I know this or, or, or....... Too bad you weren't at our Christmas "celebration" It was just about an all out brawl me against the Foxy Four.
The Republican's had finally made it back to the 3 G strategy.. GOD, GUNS and Gays to get elected.
I am hoping the Country has gotten alot better at weeding out all the misinformation that will be heading are way..
Criminals don't follow gun laws.
That line alone is a permanent death knell to most NRA members. These are not exactly forgiving types.
Do any of you libetrals even know why the founders gave us the 2nd amendment?
Yes! To be able to fight invaders from foreign countries. You know, like when the US invaded Iraq! Prior to the War of Independence, while the Colonies were under British rule, the King ordered all weapons to be confiscated by the British, thus leaving the Colonial peoples (militia) unarmed. The Constitution provided that our own Country could not do that to Citizens. This has NOTHING to do with today. We now have armed forces for protection. Maybe as a good conservatard, you might actually read a bit of unabridged history of the United States of America!
I'm glad you asked:
A Well Regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free state the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.
At the very least, the founders knew that if citizens were to have guns, they should be "well regulated."
And all they basically knew were single shot muskets.
We long ago lost the gun control argument. There is little control of firearms in the country. Realize nearly every gun in the hands of a criminal was once legally purchased.
Don't mind losing arguments. That's going to happen. It is the eventual consequences of our love affair with weaponry that are the real concern.
The upper 1% support the 2nd amendment & nra, mr grover, the gop, & the rushbo don't send their kids to public schools. No. They send their kids to harvard and college prep schools. Those schools hardly have shootings. Plus you hardly hear about how ceo's are shot.
There are many differences between these two. Both have good and bad ideas and qualities, but either would be better than the current grand occupier!
You should be physically thrown out of this country for your asinine avatar photo. Those who believe as you do have SfB and their actions prove that every day.
So far in these posts, no one seems to have read the article...The NRA flatly denies the add. They say they did not do it.
HUMMMMmmmmm!!! Is the NRA telling the truth? There is no proof that they are not... The real question is who is lying? Any of you care to answer with some evidence one way or the other. Please do use the,,,, "Well, so and so said"....
