Obama agenda: Concerns about Afghanistan

“American officials sought to reassure both Afghanistan’s government and a domestic audience on Sunday that the United States remained committed to the war after the weekend killing of two American military officers inside the Afghan Interior Ministry and days of deadly anti-American protests,” the New York Times says. “But behind the public pronouncements, American officials described a growing concern, even at the highest levels of the Obama administration and Pentagon, about the challenges of pulling off a troop withdrawal in Afghanistan that hinges on the close mentoring and training of army and police forces.”

“The nation's governors are going to the White House on Monday to discuss ways to bolster job growth and improve their partnerships with the federal government,” AP writes. “The gathering is scheduled for the final day of the National Governors Association winter meeting. Governors dined with President Barack Obama at a black tie dinner Sunday, where he pledged to work more closely with them in the coming months.”

The Hill wraps Obama’s NGA comments.

It's a no brainer. We've been there too long, achieved too little, and totally overstayed our welcome. I think the military term is "FUBAR."

Yes...we do have a strategic need for operations near Pakistan. But that's it.

Bring the rest of them home. NOW.

ron in ma, please speak for yourself! we is not me.

i stand tall for the president, a great american, his many achievements and his ability to handle two unfunded wars, and the greatest recession since the great depression, all created by the bush administration.

Tell it to Obama. Unfortunately, when Obama speaks he speaks for the nation.

kr - after all this time of having a two party (re: bipartisan) system you still play the fool of declaring that it is still bushes fault? Interesting that bipartisanship left the building in 2009 and 2010, replaced by gridlock in 2011 and campaigning in 2012.

Rob - it was the diplomatic thing to do, apologize. However, the apology might have been better delivered by clinton. Seems that obama has a problem in being consistent in how he delegates.

It is hard to understand how our troops are being killed by protesters in a war zone. Seems to me that the way this "war' is being conducted is more akin to policing an Occupy protest, rather than fighting a war the way it should be fought. If this is the way Mr. Obama is going to conduct the war in Afghanistan, why bother?

BTW, when is Mr. Obama going to start demanding apologies for the murders of our troops and desecration of our national symbols, instead of his lame apologies to the barbaric Afghanis?

Or KingK, demanding the release of our people in Egypt, you know the country Obama supported the over throw their President. Kind of quiet in the news this past couple of weeks.

As for the apology, really don't have an opinion because if you believe in what the madia reports and what really happened it's two different things.

king k have you ever lived in a war zone? i certainly hope not? war zones are the survival of the fitess! would you like another country occupying our country?

would you like to be told what you can do or where you can go, or have your family threatened by death if you dont do what your told?

i certainly wouldnt, nor would our president. the biggest problem is like vietnam was, you cant tell the bad guys from the good guys? the second problem, is moving all troops and equipment out in an orderly manner, which takes months?

        kr,

So your saying we are occupying Afghanistan? If we are then we control their government and the last I've heard is that they have a president. Change the ROE, this will change a lot of problems.

Try telling that to Osama Bin Ladin... Oh right, president Obama found him and had him killed... Good job well done...

All American troops in Afghanistan should be brought home immediately... End of story... If they want to kill themselves, let them... They live in the dark ages, leave them there...

Congratulations mr obama for promoting the invasion of a soveriegn nation without warning and the assassination of a despicable individual, so much for supporting the rule of law.

BTW - The tracking of the courier that eventually led to bin ladens hidey hole began during the bush2 administration.

We are sorry. How stuff like this continues to happen is hard to comprehend. There are factions in the Islamic world just wishing and waiting for us to do this typical blundering internationally insensitive crap so that they have a platform from which to legitimately rail against us. It is past time we got out of that sink hole. We have accomplished all we can there. Osama is dead. Afghanistan and the rest of the middle east for that matter (Syria) and the whole lot of them need to sort out their own situations. It is impossible at this point in time to tell the good guys from the bad. We have sided with the wrong folks over and over again in this region and it always comes back to bite us. There are no good guys, all factions are self serving and while they may purport to want our aid they will blame us for any and all things that go awry. While the human suffering is horrible there is no clear way for the US to proceed. The best course of action is to consider first our own national interests, our NATIONAL interests, not the interests of the military industrial complex, not the interests of multinational business interests, the national security interests of the citizens of the United States of America. And at this point in time our national interest is in getting the hell out the there.

The purpose of sending combat troops to Afghanistan was to kill or capture Bin Laden and a few of his top lieutenants. Had the Taliban given up OBL when asked, they would still be in charge and we would not be there.

Bin Laden has been killed, the master mind of the world trade center attack is in GITMO. Mission has been accomplished. We have no business trying to set up a democratic elected government in Afghanistan with our puppet.

All troops and equipment can be out of Afghanistan in 3 to 4 months time. It's time to bring the troops home and let the Afghans settle their own problems. It's no longer our business or responsibility.l

Hunker down in fortified compounds with say 8 to 10K troops to keep Pakistan honest. Bring everybody else home.

Use drones for the heavy lifting.

This could be the real campaign issue. Obama better be on top of this.
