Specter: There was no deal for Santorum support

The former Pennsylvania senator discusses his former colleague and why he won't be supporting Rick Santorum for president.

Arlen Specter says he never had a conversation with Rick Santorum about supporting President George W. Bush’s Supreme Court nominations in exchange for the presidential candidate's backing in a tough 2004 re-election primary campaign.

Specter called assertions by Santorum that such an agreement had been struck “flatly not true.”

In this week’s GOP debate, Santorum was put on the defensive about his past support for Specter, a former Republican senator from Pennsylvania who was viewed with suspicion by conservatives on many issues, particularly for his support of abortion rights.

Santorum said that he spoke with Specter and received his assurance that, as the incoming chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Specter would support Bush’s nominees.

“Arlen Specter was a senator who was going to be the chairman of the Judiciary Committee at a time when the most important issue that was coming up in the next session of Congress was two to three Supreme Court nominees,” Santorum said.  “We had a conversation, he asked me to support him.  I said, ‘will you support the president’s nominees?’  We had a 51-49 majority in the Senate.  He said ‘I’ll support the president’s nominees as chairman.’”

In an interview on MSNBC, Specter disputed that account.  “That is flatly not true.  We never had any such conversation.  It would be improper to make a commitment on a vote before I knew who the nominee was and whether I thought the nominee was qualified.”

I believe Arlen. Is Arlen a Republican or Democrat these days? Does he even know?

MSDNC is good place for Arlen to crawl into. He fits in well there.

Specter: "It would be improper to make a commitment on a vote before I knew who the nominee was and whether I thought the nominee was qualified.”

Not that I was ever a huge fan, and he did admit that one of the reasons he switched parties was to improve his election chances......but that statement alone would seem to indicate he didn't really fit in with the GOP any more.

But apparently Specter's party affiliation matters more to some people than an apparent outright lie from their potential presidential nominee.

By reading the comments in this thread I've come to realize the US is no longer a nation that follows its idealogical roots--the Constitution. Everything about this President (Obama) follows a vision that is counter-productive to world peace, inner-city poverty, international respect, job creation, discrimination and government exclusion in our lives. Why can't you folks see between the lines????? Obama has been a disaster in this 3+ years in office so why in the world would/could he be elected for another 4 years. Like I said earlier, the US is not following the idealogical roots/ideas of its forefathers therefore we need to elect a President that understands this. I have more wisdom and business experience than Obama, so why don't the dems see that he doesn't have the ideas or experience to be commander and chief. Let's get someone in office that understands our issues.

Let's see, what roots and ideas of our forefathers are you alluding to? The idea that the wealthy own 95% of the wealth? The idea that corporations and the rich own our politicians and Supreme Court? Restriction of voters rights or dictating religion? From everything I've read about our forefathers, I believe they had a very different idea - it was something to do with freedom and equality for all.

Apparently "Gotitrght" did not get it right.

I always love these RWNJ's who say things like "I have more wisdom and business experience than Obama" or "obama is the worst President ever, I could do better than him" yet they don't run for office, any office, let alone the President of the United States.

The GOP has gotten so bad, that I predict massive losses in November. When you run on promises to create jobs, then do nothing except attempt more right wing social engineering and making the destruction of the country your number one priority, you don't deserve to be in charge of Congress.

What ideological roots of our forefathers are you referring to? If Obama does not meet their criteria, do the Republicans? Let's see, Republicans love to throw around Thomas Jefferson as if he's one of them.

"Millions of innocent men, women and children, since the introduction of Christianity, have been burnt, tortured, fined and imprisoned; yet we have not advanced one inch towards uniformity."

"But it does me no injury for my neighbor to say there are twenty gods or no God. It neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg."

"History, I believe, furnishes no example of a priest-ridden people maintaining a free civil government. This marks the lowest grade of ignorance of which their civil as well as religious leaders will always avail themselves for their own purposes."

These are all quote attributed to Thomas Jefferson. To be honest, he would not be happy with America in general, but I really wish the Republicans and Teabaggers would stop claiming he was one of them and would stand with them today. Jefferson would hate the Tea Party.

I remember the GOP spending a whole day and a half on making sure that "In God We Trust" remained on our money. "Our great nation is under attack by godlessness" (probably commies and definitely Muslims) we must protect our values of the 1950s as that is when those words were added. Lot of job creation there...and so we see the GNOP priorities...save us from economic security.

One more thing "worst president ever" what short memory some have, you remember Dubya he who can't be name.

Hey you're in Palm Springs? I absolutely LOVE Palm Springs. Some of the nicest people live in Palm Springs, California! How lovely.

That said, Santorum isn't the only liar, Arlen Specter is a liar too. Arlen Specter is the guy who came up with the "single bullet theory" that claims the bullet that killed JFK, shot Governor Connolly twice, and then ended up in pristine condition on a stretcher in Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Texas.

I wouldn't trust either one of them as far as I could throw them.

American Girl gets her facts from fiction in movies, like "JFK". Typical of many liberals, dont think on your own, just drink the koolaid.

The conspiracy theorists 'magic bullet theory' has been thoroughly debunked. One bullet could and did hit both JFK and Connolly. The seats they were sitting on were of different heights, a fact ignored by Oliver Stone's mythmaking.

    Gotitright,

You are wrong, the founding fathers would likely be shuddering at the direction the republicans are going at this moment in our history. I say this because starting with George Washington, he announced his desire to keep this a secular government so people were free to practice religion as they chose without conflict. Most every president since then has affirmed that dedication to leading as a secular president. Including Reagan, Bush sr and Bush jr. And for the most part they really have. There has been some attempts to slip things in but its worked.

Right now we have a sect of the right wing that is over reaching to the point that they have Jeb Bush, Pat Buchanan, and many other party leaders begging them to stop. Pat Buchanan announced birth control is a moral issue not a political issue. We have a supreme court that has gone so conservative that they caved and passed citizens united that has basically allowed corporate America to buy out elections. This is getting into fascism territory where you have a corporate group that takes over the government. President after president over the years have been quoted to say the need to keep that kind of bill out.

Personally I think republicans are going to see the kind of backlash that democrats saw for Obamacare in 2010 and it will be a democratic sweep. Universally women feel like they are infringing on their rights. While they keep saying their religion is being infringed on, so its ok for them to feel infringed on as males but its not ok for us as 51% of the population to suffer utter violation due to religious based laws? State mandated rape is the worst but its all bad. Jeb Bush today said, that they are killing our party.

Santorum, based on a random paper, accused the netherlands of killing their elderly off without consent and now they are all up in arms. No the founding fathers would be appalled but not at Obama who has protected the American people, who is ending two wars and has put the economy back on track and its recovering. He saved the automobile industry and while republicans lie about all of that being a credit to him, and want war with Iran. It doesn't change that independents and very moderates aren't going to see it that way. We are tired of being lied to by republicans.

American Girl-I don't usually disagree with you but multiple snipers have tried and proven that one bullet could have done it. They have done the walk required to kill the second guy too in that time period. Every attempt to place a second shooter has been debunked with science. There is no evidence that the warren report was wrong.

Santorum has been labeled a liar by many of his former fellows in the Congress (including Republicans); so this latest prevarication shouldn't really surprise anyone.

I guess the real question is will dishonesty even matter the the COP electorate?

I'm afraid dishonesty probably will not matter a lick, so long as he meets the 'conservative purity' and 'religious' litmus tests of the party base.

I really love how Republicans are the ones who always tout that they are the party that follows the Constitution, when in fact, as many have already pointed out, the majority of our founding fathers who drafted the Constitution are surely turning over in their graves about what the Republicans are trying to turn our government into.

Speaking about Santorum, in this case he has been said to have lied, but the majority of the time what comes out of his mouth is exactly what he thinks and what he would impose on America if he was to become president. He wants this to be one nation under God, forcing everyone to follow a strict Christian doctrine. America was founded so that everyone would be free to choose what religion, if any, they wanted to practice. Additionally, Republicans also tout smaller government, especially Ron Paul, but then are trying to push through big government mandates (of course, on women) because they want us all barefoot and pregnant and back in the kitchen. Santorum himself wants to have no birth control available, at all and it sounds like the others have problems with it, as well. My daughter and I would both be affected because of hormonal issues. I don't need it for birth control and neither does she, at this point in her life, but we need it for some serious health problems. Frankly, I do not understand why anyone would want to get rid of birth control...we already have too many people on this planet. Also, take away birth control and the amount of women seeking abortions will skyrocket. The Republicans want to force women to have babies, but they don't want to provide any health care for women and children, nor do they want to provide any welfare. Daycare costs are astronomical, so they can't just use the excuse that these mothers just need to get jobs and they wouldn't need welfare. Daycare costs can eat up the vast majority of their paychecks, leaving them to wonder where the money will come from to put food on their table. Really if the government takes away birth control and forces women to have children, then they should pay for those children that the women knew they couldn't care for in the first place. And, don't just tell women to "hold an aspirin between their knees" (as Foster Fries, Santorum's billionaire buddy said), tell men to keep their pants on.

And, I realize that someone has already addressed "Gotitrght" on the claim that he is so much more intelligent than President Obama, but can't even spell "right" correctly. Additionally, it is Commander-in-Chief, not Commander and Chief.

Overall, it is really hard for me to believe that Americans can really be so ignorant...and then I see shows where the people still hunt alligators and eat possum and then it kind of explains why the Republicans usually win in the south.

No matter whay they say, I think most of the tea party people and/or people from the south, just can't get past the color of our president's skin. We all know that the reality is most American families have a pretty wide mix of heritages. President Obama has white grandparents that he adores and they adore him the same; he is no less their grandson because his father was black. Oh, how I wish that everyone would just realize that the color of a person's skin does not determine their worth or how smart they are or how much they should be loved. ISadly, it just seems that America has gone back decades not forward.

Rick Santorum is the PERFECT candidate for America to question the difference between FREEDOM VS. FASCISM. The GOP talks a lot about freedom, but isn't it ironic (don't you think) that every move they make seems to be taking FREEDOM from the average citizen.

Rick Santorum's idea of freedom is for EVERY AMERICA to do what he thinks is right even if it compromises your beliefs, which is the TEXT BOOK definition of FASCISM.

        #1.24 - Sat Feb 25, 2012 5:30 PM EST

Callie: Anal probe? No, I think you're confusing that with the VAGINAL probe Republicans wanted to give all women seeking an abortion in Virginia. It was then a democratic rep who suggested an amendment to that "probe" bill that any man who demanded the government give women a vaginal probe, have an anal one himself first, just to you know, make sure they work. (she was I think just trying to make a point, but it was about then the far right Repubican governor stepped in to suggest in a rare moment of clarity, that if the party of god didn't knock it off and say nevermind, he'd have no hope ever again of obtaining political office, and so they did.) As to Arlen? He's the guy that helped give this world that delightfully silent jurist on the US Supreme Court, the intellectual giant, Clarence Thomas. From there on, it was the end for Arlen. (The guy in the vest isn't going anywhere either, but he's much more entertaining when he talks about the whole women need to be strapped down by the government thing.)

Sorry folks - Santorum was telling the truth. Spector not only told Santorum, that he would do that, but the Republican candidate selection committee (200 Republicans) and to the Pittsburgh Press.

Spector only cared about being a senator. When Carter was in Trouble in 1980 Spector switched from Democrat to Republican to get a shot at the Senate. From the time he landed in the senate until challenged by Pat Toomey the second time in 2006, he voted 59% of the time with the Democrats.

After Pat Toomey Challenged the Second time, he voted 16% with the Democrats. When he got no support from the Republican Selection Committee and the polls showed he was going to lose to Toomey, he Switched to Democrat knowing state wide he could possibly defeat Toomey. His voting went to 69% Democrat.

Then a real democrat challenged him for the Democratic senate slot, even with the support of the democrat leadership, he lost, even though he was voting 97% with the democrats.

You are believing a someone who was a career politician only interested in what is best for him.

I wouldn't believe Arlen Specter about anything he says. President Bush supported Specter out of necessity of retaining the Senate. Then Specter stabs the Republicans in the back all for the sole purpose because he wanted another term as Senator and knew he could not win as a Republican.

Wow ! I thought an article wasn't going to be written on this Santorum lie. First a video of Specter was posted yesterday to which you can't comment. I hope the other candidates will use this exposure of Rick. We hear the term "negative advertising" but none really defines what a negative ad actually is. Verbalizing an opponents voting record or repeated stances on issues in comparing one to another, is welcomed in my book. Yes, it has to be factual and accurate. Just because a candidate doesn't like to be reminded of things in their past that have now been brought up, doesn't mean it is negative advertising. It's negative to them because it is not favorable to their election cause. How are the voters able to compare candidates without this information. Santorum lied to the American people about Specter during the debate. Specter happened to be the needed vote that carried the passage of Obama care. If this lie moment from Rick is used in the campaign by any of the other three, the press and some folks will call it negative advertising. I would call it revealing and makes me wonder what's next in Sandorums pandora box?

Arlen Specter is the greatest example of what the GOP has become. He was and is essentially a fiscal conservative who did not go along with other conservative values, namely social issues like abortion. And for that, he had to go. One of the reasons that I have gotten fed up with the GOP is that there is essentially no variety among leadership. They all basically take the Republican stance on everything. Taxes have to be lowered no matter what. Christian values have to be protected. Iran is a threat and must be attacked (the country has changed over time, the rest of the sentence has not). Illegal immigrants ruin our economy.

What's worse than this is that it has gotten to a point where you have to agree with all of these things or the Republican establishment and the base of the party will show you the door. Arlen Specter is exactly the kind of Republican I could see myself voting for (if I lived in PA) but the party would not have him because he answers "no" to one of their base question. If there was a Republican candidate who was about sensible spending (i.e. not lowering taxes across the board when we have a growing deficit) and staying out of citizens' private lives, I would gladly vote for him or her. Until that day comes, I begrudingly support the incumbent.

            Ouch,

So either Santorum is a liar, or he compromises his principles.

I somehow feel bad for him on this one.

Sounds to me like Rick hasn't learned the old adage--"when you're in a hole, quit digging." He got tagged for supporting Specter and chose to spin his way out of it by making up some story that somehow makes it less bad that he supported a man who was, at the time, a fellow Republican and Pennsylvanian.

              Gotitright,

Are you serious, or just another right wing clone trying to inflame the debate? Please back up your vacuous claims with some facts. Obama is a disaster? Why? Because he nailed Bin-Laden, crippled Al-Qaida, rescued GM, brought our nation from the brink of a depression to a growing economy, ended the foolish and evangelical war against Iraq, extended benefits for the unemployed, and created 3 million jobs following on the heels of 4 million lost under the prior GOP administration. Please do respond with facts instead of right wing rhetoric.

"Sanitorium Santorum" is a pathological liar. This is not shocking at all for "Sanitorium Santorum" to do. He needs to be worried that Satan is watching, and that his spot in hell is already reserved. "Satan Santorum," "Nutty Newt." and "Romulian Romney" are very Cognitively Disabled in alot of areas. The GOP/RNC do not seem to comprehend that NO President can control the price of gas. That is fact! No President can dictated gas prices, and no President can control oil speculation. No President can control gas supply or the production of it. No President can be an Oil Speculator and the President at the same time. NO WAY! No President can tell the Oil Market what to do. The GOP Clowns are trying to say that the President can control gas prices! Really?? How can any President control gas prices?? The answer is simple! They CAN NOT!

What if a sitting president released the strategic oil reserves in this country-no matter what political party affiliation? Would that effect the price of gas Progressive=Forward 11 ? If it did effect the pricing one way or another- then I guess your answer of "They ( A President) CAN NOT control gas prices!" would not be really acurate, would it?

I remember not all that long ago when some on the far left were blaming Bush for the high prices of oil and the GOPers said that the President doesn't control the price of oil but now with a Democrat in the big chair all of a sudden the President does control the price of oil. What a bunch of lying, hypocritical babies.

Spector changed parties because the Republican Party has changed to a party that Reagan, Nixon, and Bush 1 would not be welcome in. Read David Stockmans book from his time as budget director in the Reagan White House and see if Reagan the big hero of the candidates, would be even welcome. He would not be because he had to raise taxes some of the time. Spector tried to be a moderate and the Republicans have no place in their group for moderates.

Politics make for strange bedfellows. Who knows who was or is in who elses pocket? Politics are not politics as i remember them from long ago. Now its who can spend the most money on their campaign, who can tell the most lies, who can prove he's the biggest fool, etc, etc. What has this country come to? Are we to be known as a nation of liers? I have watched the reactions on the faces of the likes of Putin, and Kim, Jong Il, watched them try hard not to laugh when our President tells them something. They all know its probably not going to happen. At least they have the decency not to laugh in their faces. I cannot do that, i end up gaffawing, or litterally spitting food from my mouth laughing so hard at the bald face lies. I am so embarrassed by our politicians! ALL of them, not just the worst ones the righties.

Religious fundamentalists are the same regardless of what "God" they worship. The Christian fundamentalist can become as much of a terrorist as the Muslim fundamentalist has been. The only difference between the Taliban in Afghanistan is that they have the power to force everyone to follow their wishes. Give Christian fundamentalists the same level of power and they would behave much the same. NEVER VOTE FOR A REPUBLICAN!

Except for Heinz, Specter was the most honest and intelligent PA Senator from the GOP. I have lived off and on in PA for 30 years and am a registered Independent...Specter was made of titanium, always respected the Constitution and listened to Constituents that held differing views from the GOP; having an open mind and relying on fact got Specter in trouble with the GOP. If Specter says the conversation never happened I believe him based on his past integrity. I would be a fool to believe Santorum who has proven to be a "fake" as Paul so aptly put it and a hypocrite (not to mention a "wack job" as cited by Letterman last night)

This now happens on both sides of the aisle in Washington and and at state levels. Its no longer what can i do for our country or state or even the county as they now all have their hands out wanting a bribe or to be the one in control of this project or that one.

Look at Dobb for one he kissed the movie peoples butts till they shone and passed this or that then he was given the job he was promised for doing it(or is that a bribe, i guess if all depends if you hold office)lol and i will say this if you are a border guard and do this you get caught you will go to jail.

This man has publicly stated that he was giving bribes(oops i mean campaign funds) to members of congress so he could stomp on your rights. But i don't see him going to jail or being investigative. Wonder why because that would get so many of them into trouble and mot just with this problem but we have to wonder how many of them are guilty of taking bribes, dang said again didn't i. oh well.

Santorum has a long history of confabulation, i.e. his senate election in PA when he resided in VA. Specter may lack a specific political definition, but he has a solid reputation for being straightforward and honest. So who would be trying to make political points by lying? Who has something to gain? Specter or Santorum? Hmmm, that's a tough one.
