Pro-Romney Super PAC recycles 2007 Romney campaign ad

The pro-Romney Super PAC Restore Our Future is going up with an ad in Michigan and Arizona, starting tonight, that focuses on the story of Mitt Romney helping to lead the search for his business partner's daughter who went missing in New York City in the 1990s.

The story is true, but the ad is recycled.

In fact, the ad run by a SUPER PAC, called "Saved," is word-for-word the same ad that the Romney CAMPAIGN ran in 2007, called "The Search."

The only differences appear to be slightly different video of New York City and a different sign off. Instead of "I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message," it's "Restore Our Future is responsible for the content of this message."

Super PACs and campaigns are, by federal law, not allowed coordinate.

Here are the ads and scripts:

2012 Restore Our Future ad and script below:

My 14 year old daughter had disappeared in New York City for 3 days. No one could find her. My business partner stepped forward to take charge. He closed the company and brought almost all our employees to New York. He said I don't care how long takes, we're going to find her. He set up a command center and searched through the night. The man who helped save my daughter was Mitt Romney. Mitt's done a lot of things that people say are nearly impossible. But, for me, the most important thing he's ever done is to help save my daughter.

Restore Our Future is responsible for the content of this message.

2007 Romney campaign ad and script:

My 14 yr old daughter disappeared in New York City for three days. No one could find her. My business partner stepped forward to take charge. He closed the company and brought almost all of our employees to New York. He said I don’t care how long it takes, we're going to find her. He set up a command center and searched through the night. The man who helped save my daughter was Mitt Romney. Mitt's done a lot of things people say that are nearly impossible. But for me the most important thing he's ever done is to help save my daughter.

I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message.

*** UPDATE *** NBC's Chuck Todd confirms that the video is the same as the 2007 ad and was purchased by Restore Our Future.

"We purchased the rights to the footage from its owner Cold Harbor Films, which did not entail interacting with the Romney campaign," according to Restore Our Future Treasurer Charlie Spies, who was the chief financial officer and counsel for Romney's 2008 campaign.

Cold Harbor Films is an arm of National Media, an ad firm run by Alex Castellanos, who was a strategist for the Romney 2008 campaign.

I think Romney gives the country the best chance for a secure future. His business experience will help us unravel alot of the damage done over the previous 3 years. Does anyone really beleive that Obamacare is going to lower our deficit? NO.....

The Romney Budget:

The Center for American Progress Director for Tax and Budget Policy reports that the Romney Budget WOULD BLOW A BIG HOLE IN THE FEDERAL BUDGET.

"Taken together, Romney's fiscal policies would be even worse than the House Budget. His spending levels are the same — though he provides few details as to what he would cut to accomplish this — but his revenue levels are even lower.

The result would be continued unsustainable deficits and more debt. In fact, Romney's plan would yield approximately $6.5 trillion in deficits from 2013 through 2021."

On the Romney Budget:
The Center for American Progress Director for Tax and Budget Policy found that Romney's plan - WOULD BLOW A BIG HOLE IN THE FEDERAL BUDGET.

And what's their projections for

a) the Obama Budget - here it is

His plan would reduce deficits from $1.33 trillion in FY 2012 to $575 billion by FY 2018. Crucially, the president’s plan would stabilize the debt, and prevent it from rising into dangerous territory.

So basically they say that he will reduce the deficit by half once he's out of office? Didn't he already promise to reduce the deficit by half (by 2011), or he couldn't expect to be re-elected?

b) the Senate Budget (oops they don't have one)

If you were paying attention in August he wanted to take a big bite out of the deficit, but your team balked. He is constantly telling us about increased revenue and increasing spending where it will help the economy and therefore more revenue as with improving the infrastructure, and decreasing spending where it won't help the economy as much, as in defence spending.

Yes, it's a much better idea to stick your head in the sand over Medicare and declare that by taxing the rich "a little bit more" that you can save it, even in light of the fact that it's beneficiaries will triple in the next 20 years. The CBO were thrown under the bus when Democrats forced them to score Obamacare using unrealistic scenarios. Even before the full implementation the numbers used by the CBO are being shown to be false.

Backhouse is just priceless,

Like he thinks anyone gives the liberal / progressive sites like american progress and think progress have any credibility ....

Not only that, he keeps putting up their crap after it gets shredded, after the aburdity is pointed out.

Today's offering is classic .....

The result would be continued unsustainable deficits and more debt. In fact, Romney's plan would yield approximately $6.5 trillion in deficits from 2013 through 2021."

1. Does backhouse not realize the first sentence - "the unsustainable deficits and more debt" - are an indictment on Obama since he is the one pushing them?

2. As laughable as their opinion and credibility are, does it not occur to him that their projection of $6.5 trillion more debt under Romney over 10 years is an incredible 44% improvement over Obama's actual performance?

Thanks Backhouse for your contributions.

Can someone tell UAW that the purpose of Obama's health care initiative in not to reduce the deficit, it is to provide some modicum of health care to a large bloc of Americans. He seems to have reading comprehension problems or a learning disability.

Wayne - and you are privy to the details of that negotiation? How? On the surface it looked like Obama was trying to be the leader, but as we all know, the devil is in the details. Do you think the republicans would have balked at helping the people if there wasn't some sort of hokey pokey Obama wanted? Since we don't know, we'll never know now, eh?

Sailcat, thanks for your response.

Obama said in his State of the Union speech on Jan. 27, 2010, that health care reform "would bring down the deficit by as much as $1 trillion over the next two decades."

Do you beleive this statement???? Thanks

Brian, we will never know everything, but what we did learn from what happened in August is that the republican party values protecting the wealth of wealthy people over all else, even their other favorite issue, national defence. If this isn't true, why were they willing to gamble the defence budget with the super dud committee?

Let's mark it UAW. $1 trillion over 20 years... means that the deficit will go down at least $50 billion per year... Record it... make sure the libbies understand it... and then since they agree with Obama on every point he states, we'll shove it in their faces when it doesn't happen.

I can see the libbies already figuring out a way to go around it... because if Obama said it and it doesn't happen they have to line up their excuses for him.

So, spiraling gas prices? Not his problem. What is his problem? Not the $370,000 bonuses taxpayers must make to Solyndra execs. Not the Keystone pipeline. Nope. Some big dollar donor has a huge stake in yet another idiotic venture- so taxpayers need to pony up.

Gas from algae. Right up there with the other fairy dust and rainbow factories.

The liberal talking points are not truth, but their spin on when they can use something against republicans... even if they don't know the details themselves. You can buy into it, but that's YOUR choice... it's not my choice...

When you come to me with the details and the specifics of what the republicans turned down, then and only then can anyone make a proper assessment of what happened... got it?

UAW - Obamas comment sounds suspicously like the old government mantra of "I am from the government and I am here to help you"

I found this article while trying to find out when it originated...

      http://ezinearticles.com/?Exposing-the-Myth---Im-From-the-Government-and-I-Am-Here-to-Help-You&id=4552539

      The lead in paragraph says

Probably at some point in our nation's past, this was a true statement: "I'm
from the government and I am here to help you." That was when government was
much smaller and more focused on a limited set of functions. So limited, in
fact, that government was actually good at getting some problems solved.
However, given the behavior of today's government functions, personnel, and the
American political class these past few years, it is probably true that this
statement is no longer a fact, it is just a myth.

      Well, here's the seaweed connection. . .

T.J. Gaulthier, big dollar donor and Obama bundled, served on the transition team focusing on "green" energy.

On his expert advice, his company, Solazyme, got a half billion dollar contract from the Navy to provide algae based biofuel- biofuel which requires more gasoline, and has higher carbon emissions, than other bios.

In addition, another of his seaweed companies, SunRun, got $6.73 million from the Treasury department- for "exploration".

The link above that says that the story is true takes you to Politifact, which says that the girl was eventually found in the basement of a home in New Jersey suffering from withdrawal from an overdose of ecstacy. The police got an anonymous tip from some other kid who was involved. On Politifact's page, there are links to two different NY Times stories written at the time (1996), neither of which mention Romney by name. But since Politifact says that the essence of the story is true, I'm willing to accept that, and it's nice to know that Romney did something good with his money.

I'm not so sure, though, if it were my 14-year-old daughter, that I'd be willing to drag a 26-year-old story about her teenage drug habits out in public again just for the sake of politics. Do we have any idea at all how the woman herself feels about this?

What a peculiar ad. Certainly the intent is to ascribe a measure of humanity to Mr. Romney, but recycling an old story like this just seems odd to me. Must agree with JoAnne in PA about the story and its relation to the subject girl.

2007 was a long time ago. If voters are to be convinced of Mr. Romney's concern for his fellow man the question "what have you done for me lately" needs to be addressed.

At least it has nothing to do with religion.

The ad would suggest that Romney himself was out patrolling the dark alleys and bribing informants like some tv undercover cop hero - yet when you read the full story, what it comes down to is that he financed much of the search effort that dozens of other people were involved in. I'm not saying that's a bad thing - if it had anything at all to do with reuniting the girl with her parents, then that's great - it just seems like even in a story like this, Romney can't seem to escape the image of a guy who can just go out and buy whatever results he wants. And I definitely don't care for the exploitation angle. But yeah.....at least it's a break from the religious stuff. Not to mention the "liar, liar, pants on fire" ads.

Torpedo You - Do tell what branch Obama served in and for how long. I'm pretty certain that Obama dodged the military... Considering that it was peace time then why wouldn't he have gone in to serve the country he loves so much? If Obama is such a devoted American you'd think that in the middle 80's would have been a perfect time to serve in the military and survive...

I guess he just didn't have it in him to serve this country back then.

The point Wayne is that when you throw stones, you'd better learn to dodge those stones thrown back at you. How can any liberal complain about any of the republicans not serving when the liberal hero Obama never served.

Funny, I found time to put in my 4 years of being in the military... no trouble what so ever... and I'm very happy I did it. From what I understand, Obama loathes the military...

I'd say your were throwing a heck of a lot of stones. I put in my time too, and I am proud of that. You are throwing stones yet again telling us that Obama loathes the military. He has pushed legislation to help veterans get back onto their feet and has done maximum damage to the enemy with minimum loss. He has taken out some pretty important enemies with no loss of life on our side at all. If I were in the service again that is the president I would want.

Brian..You haven't the foggiest! This President has done more to support the military than the former..I suggest you look at the record then cite specific instances where this president "loathes" the military. Regulations prohibit active duty personnel from speaking about policy. I can tell you that the 2 of mine both LT Cmdrs (1 recently returned from a FOB in the AFG), have seen the results of increased funding for PTSD which was ignored during the last administration. From the quality of your posts, you most likely never made it beyond E-2.

Wayne said: You are throwing stones yet again telling us that Obama loathes the military. He has pushed legislation to help veterans get back onto their feet and has done maximum damage to the enemy with minimum loss.

It's a smokescreen Wayne. His ONLY objective is to win votes. He is a campaigner and his light action concerning the military has only been done in order to win support with his liberal base... and from what he's done for the soldiers, he, as commander in chief, is supposed to. How can you praise him for that? Do you praise him for taking a piss in the morning when he wakes up? Somehow I think you'd find a way to do that if you could.

        #3.10 - Thu Feb 23, 2012 6:39 PM EST

Torpedo You - You must not be paying attention to the live action... all you are concerned about is what Obama has done on the surface. Believe me, it's surface dressing. What other CIC has ever told soldiers they must read Miranda Rights to foreign combatants? What other CIC has limited the rules of engagement while in a firefight? What other CIC has taken intel and told the troops they cannot defend themselves unless fired upon first... even in the instance of IUD's and visible troops? Huh? Chew on that for a little while while you contemplate all the wonderful things Obama is doing.

Speaking of quality of posts, you are just angry because I don't support your hero worship. Get angry tough guy. Get mad at all us conservatives that see right past this leftist ideologue. I can't help it you are so blind you refuse to see it. Keep trotting along merrily right up Obama's butt.

He also worked on the 1939 World's fair, designing Child's Restaurant. He also worked in Williamsburg and designed the Williamsburg Inn. He was consulted regarding Independence Hall's restoration as well, and told them not to take the bell out of the tower, which they did listen to, and not to clean the brickface, which the did do. In New Jersey he designed mostly public buildings, including Clara Moss Hospita. During World War II, he designed defence plants and even did some naval architecture, redesigning the living spaces on LCT's. He was a great guy, and I miss him immensely. I will go to your account when time allows. At this time I am transcribing his WWI letters.

          The Blue Nose lyrics

Well I've got a story to tell
Of a proud ship that served her people well
Well the Bluenose was her name
And she never lost a race
And she won herself a place in the history of Canada
Blow winds blow for the Bluenose is sailing once again

          CHORUS
So beat to the windward once more
And it's up jib and fores'l as before
For your country will be proud once again
Of the ship and the men
Who sailed her smartly into history
Blow winds blow for the Bluenose is sailing once again

She was born in a Nova Scotia town
Where the shipwrights had gained world renown
          Down in Lunenburg
They built a living legend out of skill, sweat and pride
And sailed her masterfully till she died
Blow winds blow for the Bluenose is sailing once again

My business partner stepped forward to take charge. He closed the company and brought almost all our employees to New York. He said I don't care how long takes, we're going to find her. He set up a command center and searched through the night.

Was Romney the business partner? If so, then he should have reacted the way he did. Most people would. Romney. It's what you do with people you know. You help each other out. Without bragging about it.

As far as Romney going after President Obama for not handling the auto industry bail out correctly, it sort of sounds like Romney dissing a team that won the World Series because none of the starting pitchers pitched a perfect game.

Now Romney is saying something about Santorum perhaps voting in a way he shouldn't have and Mitt is going after him on this?

What about the things Romney did up here when he was Governor of a true blue state?

I love it when Romney tries to defend his opposition to the auto bailout (although he was OK with bailing out the banks), arguing that a managed private bankruptcy would have been better. I'm not sure that is true but the fact is, the economy was in such a free fall (thanks to George W. Bush) that there was no one with the capital to put up for such a bankruptcy. It was the Obama plan or failure and Mitt advocated failure.

Our natural resource are abundant!!! Oil companies and Enery companies are finding more and more way to make or generate energy.

Yet - the very people that this land is own by are the ones suffering from the greed and politics of Wall Street and the politicans for which their hands are in their pockets.

They led U.S. to believe that the more we allow them to drill, frack, and such - that we can rely less on foreign countries for these products and such!

But as we are finding out...the more we allow them the more our gas prices goes up and the more money the oil companies and wall street makes - by speculation and selling of the products to foreign countries.

A total scam - and yet our elected officals just sit back on their asses and take in the contributions for their reelections from these bastards that actually are ruining the country - they swear to protect and represent.

Another sad thing - these very same scammers then blame IRAN for the rise in gas prices and thereby destruction of our ecomony.

It's a said day for ALL AMERICANs. When all it takes is 3rd world country to make a negative "remark" and gas prices soar at almost 10 cent a gallon- per week...

It seems our United States of American is in a worst shape then we ever image - apparently they don't need bombs, just talk.

We should just go to war with them ...at least it would may just justify oil companies and wall street speculation for stealing the money out of our pockets...

When it comes to money - GOD, PEOPLE, ETHICS - don't exist for these greedy bastards. May you all rut in hell!!!

            TRUTH - not crap

Thank you and GOD BLESS AMERICA

correct! Doesn't everyone know by now that Bush or Obama had nothing to do with gas prices going up or down? It is the speculators on Wall Street that cause the prices to go up. They are the ones getting rich together with the big oil companies. They jump on the current problem with Iran and suddenly gas prices are high. Not only that, it incites more hate against Iran just in case someone wants to start throwing bombs around.

I agree with you Steven Martin. Actually, taking credit for it in this way shows how truly shalow and self-serving Mitt really is.

"Romulian Romney" is known as the GOP "Speculator and Chief." He is also known as the "Political Flip-Flopper." Now he will be known as the GOP "Informational Recycler." The "Romulian" should recycle his tax records from the 1980's, and 1990's. Now that's a thought!

Romney is unelectable. First he is a Mormon. Second he is a backflipper. He can't be trusted.

Same old rhetoric from 2007 Super PAC, but they hid the truth! They said: "RESTORE OUR FUTURE" and what they meant to say, BOTH THEN AND NOW, "RESTORE OUR CORPORATE FUTURE" to hell with the American People of the United States, we'll give them what's left!

Ask President Obama to have the Supreme Court declare the oil corporations UNCONSTITUTIONAL, because their ONE PRODUCT(OIL) is causing INFLATION of ALL OTHER PRODUCTS that the American People must have to survive on!!! That is NOT CONSTITUTIONAL! The American People of the United States want their country back!

Enough is enough!! It's time for change, and that time is now! NOT LATER, BUT RIGHT NOW!!

Wow! Recycled campaign ads. Have they figured out that Romney is a loser and are they trying to save some of those campaign contributions?
