An NBC News poll shows that GOP presidential hopefuls Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum are neck-and-neck in Michigan, Romney's birthplace. Romney, meanwhile, has a comfortable lead in Arizona, which has a sizable Mormon population.
Less than a week before Tuesday’s crucial Republican presidential primary in Michigan, a new NBC News/Marist poll shows Mitt Romney and Rick Santorum locked in a statistical tie, while a separate NBC/Marist survey shows Romney comfortably leading in Arizona, which holds its primary the same day.
In Michigan – which has turned into a make-or-break contest for Romney – the former Massachusetts governor gets the support of 37 percent of likely GOP primary voters, including those who are leaning toward a particular candidate.
NBC-Marist poll results: Michigan | Arizona
Santorum, the former Pennsylvania senator, gets 35 percent, and he’s followed by Texas Rep. Ron Paul at 13 percent and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich at 8 percent.
NYT: GOP campaigns grow more dependent on 'super PAC' aid
“Michigan is neck and neck,” says pollster Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion, which conducted both surveys.
But in Arizona, Romney is on safer ground: He receives the support of 43 percent of likely GOP primary voters, Santorum gets 27 percent, Gingrich 16 percent and Paul 11 percent.
And looking ahead to November’s general election, President Barack Obama enjoys a double-digit edge over his closest GOP competition in Michigan (a state Republicans are hoping to target), while he’s trailing the leading Republicans in Arizona (which the Obama camp wants to put into play).
Romney vs. Santorum ideological breakdown
In both states, support for Romney and Santorum breaks down along ideological lines, as well as whether voters have already cast their ballots.
In Michigan, Santorum leads Romney among self-identified Tea Party supporters, 48 to 29 percent, and those who describe themselves as “very conservative,” 59 to 20 percent.
Michigan voters: Santorum connects better than Romney
Yet among those who don’t support the Tea Party, Romney is ahead by more than 20 points, 45 to 24 percent.
And among those who have already voted absentee in Michigan – 16 percent of likely GOP voters – Romney leads Santorum, 49 to 26 percent.
NYT: After auto industry bailout, Detroit fallout trails Romney
The same ideological pattern is true in Arizona, although Romney performs much better with the most conservative voters there than in Michigan.
And among those who have voted early or absentee in Arizona – more than half of all likely Republicans voters in the poll – Romney holds a 30-point advantage over Santorum, 52 to 22 percent.
Obama leads in Michigan, trails in Arizona
Turning to the general-election race in November, Obama leads Romney in Michigan by nearly 20 points among registered voters, 51 to 33 percent, with 15 percent undecided.
Against Paul, the president’s lead is 22 points (53 to 31 percent); against Santorum, it’s 26 points (55 to 29 percent); and against Gingrich, it’s 28 points (56 to 28 percent).
What’s more, 51 percent of registered Michigan voters approve of Obama’s job; 63 percent of them believe the auto industry bailout was a good idea (including 61 percent of independents and 42 percent of likely GOP primary voters); and a majority think the president deserves credit for the auto industry’s recovery.
But Arizona is tougher territory for the president, whose approval rating among registered voters in the state is just 38 percent.
NYT: Obama offers to cut corporate tax rate to 28%
In hypothetical match-ups, Obama trails Romney by five points (40 to 45 percent); Santorum by three (42 to 45 percent); Paul by 2 points (41 to 43 percent); yet he leads Gingrich by five (45 to 40 percent).
The NBC/Marist survey of Michigan was conducted Feb. 19-20 of 3,149 registered voters (margin of error of plus-minus 1.8 percentage points) and 715 likely Republican primary voters (plus-minus 3.7 percentage points).
The NBC/Marist survey of Arizona also was conducted Feb. 19-20 of 2,487 registered voters (plus-minus 2.0 percentage points) and 767 likely GOP primary voters (plus-minus 3.5 percentage points).

can we stop comparing the current and last president and casting blame, let's deal with where we are now and what is being done about it. It is rather obvious both have contributed to where we are currently. My biggest issue is more of a moral issue, and morally where the current president is, where he is taking us as a country. Our country is not only different economically, we are heading in a vastly different direction morally and idealogically. If I was a founding father of this country, I would no longer recognize the US. The direction we are heading and the identity we have currently has changed more under the current presidents term than the several presidents before him. Who are we anymore? I know who I am and I know what this country used to be, the current president has fundamentally changed that. He doesn't stand for who America was; he does not represent me, if he represents you, then you should take a hard look at who we were and who we are now and decide if you are an American or something else.
Who are we? Who do you want us to be?
Different direction? As in a black anti-christ, muslim? Time to take country "back"?
Thank heavens the founding fathers can't smell the GOP stench anymore.
I rest my case!
black has nothing to do with it, but yes, an anti-christ muslim or at least that type of agenda, honestly I think that has a lot to do with it. you nailed it. Thank you.
Just a point of education. LDS theology dosen't teach that the world is literally only 6000 years old. It teaches that God created the world in 6 days and rested on the 7th, but that God's time is not our own. What God calls a day could be thousands of our years or more. We don't know how old the Earth is, nor how he created all things. We do know that God does not break his own laws. (that includes physical laws) On top of that, it is not vital to our salvation to know these things. If you are really interested, ask God yourself one day.
So he made the animals, but it might have thousands of years before he made the grains and grasses they needed to live on? Yeah that makes a lot of sense.
How did all the freshwater fish survive the Noah's Ark flood? Did Noah have fish tanks? I always wondered.
Like I said...wait and you can ask God yourself. It can be interesting to speculate on all of these things, but all I know is that the human body is far too complex to be a happy accident of evolution. My faith is not shaken by some silly speculation from non believers.
My son was diagnoised with type 1 diabetes at 11 months old. I had to give him insulin shots for years (before he got his insulin pump) I would often make a mistake on his dosage and have to empty the syringe and start over. One day I did this, but instead of shoting the insulin down the sink I put it on the counter. It was literally a tiny drop not 1/4 inch across. It amazed me how insignificant this tiny drop of liquid was. But if I gave it to him he lived, if I didn't he died. That is an amazing miracle all by itself, then there are thousands of other hormones, proteins and chemicals that have to "behave" every minute of every day. Sorry can't by the accident of nature arguement.
Whatever the Republican Party had in mind to try to beat President Obama is useless. Speaking of useless, Romney, Santorum and Gingrich COMBINED wouldn't stand a chance of being elected. They can't talk about the economy and they won't talk about jobs. So the only thing left to do is try to bring religion into the forefront one more time. Santorum is the worst. If I want to hear a sermon, I'll go to church. I certainly don't want my President telling me how I should practice my faith. What a moron. I was listening to Joe Scarborough this morning....he's beside himself. He admitted ON AIR his pro-life conservative wife who has never voted for a Democrat in her life is now waivering. Yeah, along with a million others. Obama/Biden 2012.

^ You will have a long wait. GOP lackeys don't even understand the debt ceiling, much less can they explain it.
They don't even understand the fact that every GOP candidate proposes the same combination of tax cuts and military spending increases that would raise the debt higher, and therefore require additional increases in the debt ceiling.
When Cheney said — "Reagan proved deficits don't matter", he was really implying that the American people are like little children, and cannot come to grips with complex issue.
Where GOP lackeys are concerned - he was doubtless correct.
CORRECT - GOPers don't understand numbers or science. Only requirement to vote is a good christian and that they take country BACK from strange looking humans.
That's ok Obama. We can't remember the Vice Presidents name either and a year from now we won't be speaking yours, well, except in the history books as this country's worst president next to "W".
This country's worst president next to "W".
^ The 3 worst are W, Nixon and Hoover - all GOP, just like you.
May be you should get off the corn feed. Saint O RAM Grand Theologian getting in your living room?
There are various lists of worst Presidents. Recent Presidents can't really be judged, until history has a chance to give their presidencies a fair perspective. Most of the "worst Presidents" are those that people are not very familiar with. James Garfield, Franklin Pierce, Chester A. Arthur, Zachary Taylor, Millard Fillmore, etc.
I'm guessing there are more than a few high school students who didn't even know these people were President. A few recognizable names are usually included, like Nixon, Hoover and Buchanan.
hey I'm finally back on, must be super good, vote tuesday but dont like either one of these and newt even less-what to do?? does anyone know if michigan is a win or take all state or do we split our primary vote??
Just ignore the fact that Bush was handed a prosperous economy with a surplus, and handed over the country 8 years later, in the midst of a complete economic meltdown unlike anything ever seen before.
^ The country rallied around Bush after his failure to protect the country on Sept 11, 2001.
He had an approval rating of almost 90% - highest in HISTORY!
But he left office, with a 22% approval rating - LOWEST in history.
GOP lackey Roy actually asks "why?".
Don't try to explain the obvious to him, just laugh *at* him.
Denial is the last refuge of the desperate.
OBAMA/BIDEN 2012
Romney: 'I'm not concerned about the very poor'
Romney: 'I'm not concerned about the very poor'
Romney: 'I'm not concerned about the very poor'
What part of that phrase don't you understand ?
I'm assuming that it was a concious decision to leave out the rest of the statement.
Maybe you should state the complete statement instead of pulling out pieces as the media do on their least favorite politicians.
I think he meant government program wise because they already get all kinds of breaks and that he wants to consentrate on the middle class who he feels gets the shaft plus he said if by chance the safety net is missin some of these folks at the bottom he will fix it
You people hear what you want to hear
You CAN NOT pull a single line out of the middle of a sentence to make your point. In that same statement he ALSO said "He didn't care about the very rich". How come that part of the quote never gets repeated. In regards to the poor he said he didn't worry about them because they have a safety net, AND if there were problems with that safety net, he would fix them. He NEVER said he had no concern for the poor. Get your facts straight before you spout ridiculous, unfair comments.
see below
What a load of crap!!!!
Ron Paul is winning. Stop hiding the facts.
And Newt Gingrich has a colony on the Moon.
...and there is a tooth fairy, and a Santa Claus.
If the demographic is half-crazy, crotchety old anarchists 75 years or older, I think Ron Paul is in the lead.

The one thing I can say about Republicans is they are sure good for laugh. And, the fact that a loser like Santorum with his far out ideas is even close to Romney in the race is laughable.
Ladies, he wants to take away the rights you have over your own body and maybe even your right to vote. After all if you are barefoot and pregnant, how could you possibly know about anything that you could vote about
The "inevitable nominee" for the GOP: A chicken hawk, multimillionaire Morman cultist who believes that he will one day attain godhood and populate his own world with his spirit babies, that Jesus Christ and Satan are twin brothers, and who wears magic underwear, etc. Bye, bye, GOP. You just lost your last ounce of credibility as the party that was supposedly the champion of Christianity and morality. What a joke. And people are calling President Obama the anti-Christ! What! Notice that no one is even mentioning what the cult of Morman believes in and why they are NOT Christians or Catholics. They are an absolutely heretical cult by every definition. SHEEP. "Baa, Baa."
I don't believe what Mormans believe, it is far fetched and you referenced several things that are out of line with what the bible teaches, so I will give you that. I don't think Obama is the anti-christ, he could be, but I don't think he is. But he is certainly "anti-christ", wouldn't you say? I guess the question for you is are you ok that he is anti-christ and him running our country as such? If you are, then you must support our country going to hell.
Romeny's status as a Christian should have nothing whatsoever to do with this political campagain. Who says that every candidate has to be Christian or Catholic anyway? No matter what biased opinions you have about Mormons, you are ridiculously wrong on their beliefs. Ultimately the Mormons believe Jesus Christ died for their sins, and that it is only through a personal belief in his atonement that we can one day return to live with our Heavenly Father. If those beliefs make them Christion or not has nothing to do with politics. It is a judgement to be made by Jesus Christ himself one day. Not a bunch of loud people on the internet.
Michelle,
You don't honestly believe that Samurai actually cares about what Mormons believe, do you? His goal is simply to bring up Mormonism in a negative way, so that he can try to make Romney look bad. If he were a Christian he would use the common stereotypes, if he were Buddhist or Hindu it would be something else. It doesn't really have anything to do with religion at all - it is just another way to attack the GOP candidates.
I am a staunch Republican gone Independent! The GOP is a godless joke now. Gone are the days when it supposedly had a monopoly on morality... We have a MORMAN as the "chosen one" for the nomination! WHAT! Notice that no media outlets or ANYONE are even talking about what they even believe in! They are cultists, for Pete's sake! They believe that Satan and Jesus are twin brothers! The cult is heretical by every definition! Do research! Look up what they believe in. And they call Obama the anti-Christ! What is our country coming to? Ron Paul is the only man up there who makes sense, is standing up for the Constitution, and is beholden to no one, but himself and God. That's why he got my vote! Go, Ron Paul! You're an inspiration!
I too was a Reblican for many years but mo more. They have become a joke, a parade of clowns. Why are people even turning out in these primaries? Just because they get votes in the primaries, does not mean that those same people are going to vote for them in November. The polls show that Santorum cannot beat President Obama. Why are people voting for him?
he hasnt been chosen yet and truthfully I dont understand what the mormon church is, they believe in jesus christ correct/ so why are they not christian yet the catholics who think anyone who is not catholic will go to hell according to the pope are not a cult? or is the pope not saying this anymore and they dont believe this?? and besides what is the definition of a cult? Jerimiah wrights church is not considered a cult or is it one too? all so confusing.
Yankee Samurai actually after reading your posts I absolutely believe you are the religious nutjob! I just hope your family is thinking about an intervention to put you in some kind of deprogramming? Look hillbilly your religous rant should be saved for back at the holler while pastor is charming the poisonous vipers. Romney does not try to preach and I tell you what that is what I want Yankee Samurai leave the preaching at your church give me a competent economist, manager, leader and businessman!
What in Gods name do you think any republican candidate can do with creating Jobs unless they bring back the jobs we lost to 3rd world countries because of corporations needing cheaper labor to satisfy their greedy stock holders???...and the republicans and some dems are in the pockets of these corporations....I guess " we the people" has too many under tones of socialism in it ...Remember Hitler's first agenda was to destroy labor unions to weaken the power of he people!!! and history is repeating itself ...look at wisconsin and now michigan....people wake up!!...funny how all the republican candidates are millionaires...hmmmm
I believe if you averaged santorums pay the last 5 years he released it was less thana million a year but close
Right wing - Left wing, anyone that subscribes to one political ideology can't be very intelligent. You people bashing all the Republican candidates get real. I'll ask anyone of you that have called Romney an idiot/clown/joke etc. to put your resume up against his. That would be the real joke! With regard to the economy - Yes, the economy was good when Clinton was in, but he didn't wave his magic wand to make it good - he was to busy waving his wand in Monica Lewinsky's face. The facts are, we were high on a tech bubble with companies investing in technology like never before, Clinton HAD to deal with republican's majority in Congress to hammer out budgets, so both sides made it work, and yes I'll say Clinton knew how to deal with the opposing party. However, the economy was on its way down BEFORE Clinton left office. Unemployment was on the way up. Bush had to deal with a lot of catastrophes Clinton never thought of (perhaps if he had, and he had the guts to take out Bin Laden when he had the chance, Bush wouldn't have had to deal with 9/11).
So all of you cut the ideological bashing, use some common sense and vote for the person who will lead this country back to the top. If we disagree on who that person is, so be it, can't we do it respectfully?
Bush and catastrophe? Are you serious? He was the catastrophe.
Respect? Using Monica is showing respect? In case you are too young to remember..TAKING OUT FOREIGNERS by the CIA caused congress to TAKE AWAY that power from the CIA and THE PRESIDENT BACK IN THE 70s. This matter came up again in case you FORGOT,,Clinton asked Congress for permission to take out Saddam and OBL. Trent Lott went berserk,so did NEWT. Clinton was trying to start war in the mideast,,Dint we have trade deals going with Saddam..Hadnt Pres Reagan decided Saddam was no enemy of America,,,Those were the arguments Republicans threw at Clinton. Ok Now read NewT Gingrich words on face the nation.quote- Even tho i threw rocks at Pres Clinton in congress,,not a day went by that I didnt walk into his office and WE WENT OVER National Intell reports..discussed EVERTHING that pertained to AMERICAS BEST INTEREST, AND i didnt have to call the white house to meet with Pres Clinton, His door was open to any member of congress. end quote.. OK was Newt LYING ??? Now tell us why GHW BUSH didnt remove Saddam Hussein.since W claimed Iraq was Al QaEDA TRAINING HDQTRS ,SADDAM SUPPORTED OBL ETC ETC ETC.
The American people don't have a decent choice for the republican party. These men aren't president material. We need men that have Military back grounds that speak with the spirit of truth the Iron.
The stench from the GOPers - keep it coming. Preachers, Evangelicals, Fundamentalist Talibans - see you in November. Sharia - no thank you Saint O RAM (Grand Theologian). We need a president not a theologian. This party is close to the last nail on the coffin. Outdated and Repulsive.
More BLAH-BLAH-BLAH. From the NO, Do nothings.
When you LISTEN CAREFULLY at all their rhetoric. It really spews NONSENSE and utter NOTHINGNESS.
There is no HEART and SOUL, or the real person speaking. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE IMAGINARY !!!!!
What MONEY AND POWER CAN BUY from the GLAZED OVER individuals that are sheep in a herd and have no UNDERSTANDING of TACTICS to reach a GOAL. Which is how the CANDIDATES are personifying themselves (The Con Job).
Every day the GOP opens their mouth they become more and more unlikely to even become relevant in any part of federal Government. The real issue here is to stop them at the state level everybody is so concentrated on the Presidential that these dirty little bastards are sneaking in to State office and destroying the right of their citizens. We the people from both sides of the isle are under attack from both sides not just the fed. Tlme for people to get more organized and bring the Republican Party as we know it to an end
hasnt the gop been quite the same in many respects as far as cutting taxes and government regulations is the answer to fixing pretty much everything , I see nothing new here amongst any of these canidates, does anyone else?
And these two are the best the Repubs can do ? One should not be voted for because of what he did ... and said ... while in office ... and the other for reversing himself on many of the good things he did while IN office since he's been out of office.
It would seem that the definition of 'conservative' has changed quite a bit in the last 30 years.

Ben I think you voted for Obama
And will Again!!
Battle of the losers.
The republicans have become far too extreme. Extremists simply don't win in a general election. As a republican, these extremists scare me. If they can't find someone who doesn't live so far on the right wing fringe, I'll be voting for ... I can't believe I'm saying this ... Obama.
We've spent almost 4 years hearing about how Obama wasn't born in this country, how he's a socialist, a communist a Muslim out to turn us over to Iran, etc etc etc. I've lost faith in finding any republican candidate with a firm grasp on reality. Obama would have no chance if real republicans were ruining. Sadly, there are no real republicans running. Only whacko's.
We've watched republicans hold the working people in this country hostage with their tax cuts. We've watched them ... first the time ever ... challenge the debt ceiling to the point of ruining our credit rating. We've heard them admit that they will not support Obama in anything, regardless of who it hurt. We watched them do just that.
Where are the Nixon republicans? The Ford republicans? Where did these whack jobs come from?
I'd rather have Obama as President than some extremist nut case who lives in a conspiracy theory bubble of their own creation. Who knows, maybe if the republicans get hammered in this election, by the time the next one rolls around they will regain a true sense of reality and we can finally have a republican party who cares more about America than the corporations who are funding their campaigns.
Yes I know ... but I can only dream.
Ronald Reagan began the process of turning the fiscally conservative party into the socially conservative party. Barry Goldwater was still alive in 1980, and he was disgusted by this behavior. The true conservatives in the 1950s and 1960s thought that government had no role to play in people's personal lives. People like "Mr. Conservative" Barry Goldwater believed in a small government in all aspects, that would never think of forcing vaginal probes on pregnant women, or passing laws saying who can marry whom.
A lot of us would be Republicans today, if the party was the party of Goldwater.
Ever notice the last four letters in the following:
American - I can
Republican - I can
Democrats - Rats
Interesting for sure....
That's good.
Do you (BEN) know what wop means???????
