Fact check: Santorum says Obama looks down on disabled, encouraging more abortions

Rick Santorum accused President Obama of requiring free prenatal testing in the health care plan he signed in 2010 because it would detect if children were disabled, encourage more abortions and save money.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare -- another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum has a young disabled daughter, who has had several health complications.

Many doctors and medical experts would dispute Santorum's reasoning that the sole explanation for pre-natal testing is to have an abortion. There is value in pre-natal testing, because it can detect potential problems in utero or at delivery and allow parents and doctors to get the proper care for their child.

"Early detection of a fetal condition gives parents the opportunity to terminate the pregnancy in an early stage or to make the preparations necessary to best care for an affected child," Clare O'Connor, Ph.D., of the Biology Department at Boston College, wrote in Nature Education.

Its a sad tale in American history that our illustrious leader, Obama, has to endure this feeding frenzy of partisan kooks just to satisfy America's addiction for political drama and Reality TV.

So we’re Republicans and this is how we plan to win the White House in 2012. First of all – we are going to do everything we can to drive out the blacks, the Hispanics, the gays, the lesbians, the atheist, the main-stream Christians, the Moslems, and the moderates. We them are going to make sure we do everything we can to get rid of all the auto workers because GM and Chrysler should have folded up their tents and gone bankrupt. Next – we’re going to make most of the female voters angry with us by suggesting that states have the right to ban all birth control, by holding a committee meeting discussing birth control and NOT allow any women to even take part, and – by suggesting that radical feminist are to blame for women working outside the home. Then – to keep the nation safe, we’re going to increase the troops on Afghanistan, send troops back into Iraq and start a two more wars – one with Iran and one with Syria. And just to top everything off – we’re going to not only stop all federal aid to education; we’re going to stop all state aid to education. After we have done all this, our nominee will be Rick Santorum – a former Senator who was kicked out of office by the voters in his state by more than a 2 to 1 margin.

Why doesn't someone ask santorum if he thinks it is a good thing that he has had seven kids, eight counting one that died. What gives him the right to OVERPOPULATE with a huge LITTER of kids? What if everyone in America or around the world just popped out kid after kid because they don't use birth control or abstain? I would truly like to see him try to defend WHY exactly he could not have adopted a few kids IF IF he felt that he needed to have a baseball team. Long ago americans had big families because there was no real birth control and most of them wanted extra workers for the farm. Fortunately that is no longer the case. So what's your excuse Santorum. What would you say to the idea that ALL americans set a goal to have 8 kids like YOU. How do you think those welfare, homeless and unemployment rolls would look then? Does Santorum have a "right" to have seven kids? Well yes i suppose that every american has a "right" to pump out as many kids as they want. BUT does having a "right" make it the RIGHT thing to do? What say you Ricky? And perhaps the same question to Romney with his FIVE kids and Sarah Payme with her brood of FIVE.

If you were to actually have the opportunity to ask Santorum your questions (i.e., he was physically restrained so that he couldn't run away), he would probably first accuse you of being a crazy, tree-hugging environmentalist for even asking the questions. Then he would probably explain that there is no problem with overpopulation because no matter how many more biillions of people inhabit the earth, there will always be plenty of resources because God will find a way to provide them.

It is obvious that they cannot beat Obama on economy and rick has not proposed an economic policy so he keeps on coming up with all this garbage to grab some media attention and get the ideological right voters on his side.

It's comments like these that made those of us in PA vote him the h-e-double-hockey-sticks OUT! He is so far to the right it's unbelievable. I can't for the life of me understand why even staunch conservatives think he's so great. Is their unabashed hate for President Obama THAT great they would tolerate this type of person in our top office. We just got world respect back again...he'd toss it right back into the gutter!

Didnt Santorum ever hear of all the good that can be done if diseases are discovered early actually saving lives. Procedures can be done in the womb that will help babies for the rest of their lives.

            What a NUT.

Who's going to risk their pension by putting another Republican nut in office.

Wait a minute; something is wrong. This week we are supposed to gang up on Romney. What the h@ll is going on? Didn't anybody coordinate this effort with Media Matters? Let's get with the program people - we have our talking points to address., Regarding this issue with Santorum, it is just a bit of confusion. Free pre-natal care s a facet of Obamacare, but really it is all about planned parenthood. Planned parenthood must be supported and defended at all costs. It is central to what Obamacare delivers. Margaret Sanger is beaming with pride at her creation - planned parenthood. Without planned parenthood where would maltlhusian eugenics be today? Genocide is just a harsh term for manifest destiny of race relations...

Mr. Santorum, not Ricky as many of you say is a good man. I will not be voting for him but at least treat him with respect. Just as our President should not be referred to as Barry. He is Mr. President Barack Obama and deserves that respect. Why are you treating these people with so much disrespect?

Mr. Santorum, Mr. Romney and our President should be treated with respect from everyone why are you being so rude?

I certainly understand your dislike of a candidate but where is the civility? Please show some maturity in your posts.

Showing respect is civil thing to do, you are right. But I do not agree on one thing you say. Rick Santorum is NOT a good man. He is exactly what the bible warns against, a wolf in a sheep's clothes.

To all genuine Christians out there, BEWARE.

Well Billy, I don't like him but I do not believe he is a bad person. I just think he talks all of this political BS to further his agenda. I do think he is an honorable man but I do not like his message and I will not vote for him.

The Republicans have not fielded a worthy candidate period. I am a Democrat and your really best candidate is Newt Gingrich and the the reason I say that is he is the only one who is saying what he believes however misguided it may be .

I am an American and I want the best for our country and I don't give a @!$%# about party affiliation. I mean this. I am just so perplexted as why people can't get this together.

I think that the Republicans should stop blocking Obama on everything. It is time to grow up. We have a black man for President and he was voted in by white people. Please let him do his job. Are we still this racist? The sad fact is maybe we are.

Lets try again. Rick home schools his children. Thus we are in trouble when he cant differentiate between theology (the systematic and rational study of religion) and philosophy ( a belief based system to view the world personally). The home schooling enters the debate when the man cannot open a dictionary a find the definition to suit the situation being described. Rick ran away from his private school charges, then cheapened out with home schooling. So this is the result: a talking head unable to define what he says, someone who will ensure that public school funding will be replaced with breaks for private schooled rich illiterates who want to be president. Heck Romney pulled a parachute on Detroit and his home state, Gingrich bails on wives, and now Sanitorium chickens out on Websters. When will the madness end.

Of all the clowns that are trying to get the Republican nomination, Santorum is the scariest, the creepiest and the most idiotic of the bunch. Not one of those he was in Congress with has endorsed him. PA certainly didn't reelect him when he ran for a second term. That should make you ask why? If those that he worked with wouldn't endorse him, that says a lot about this person's ability. The only thing he is doing right now is getting the extremists on the right to hear what they want to hear --- and what they are hearing should be scaring any sane person.

Just because the testing is required to be FREE does not mean that you are required to TAKE the TEST. I have 4 kids, I was offered free testing for a variety of possible disabilities for each one, I refused each test. My doctors did not pressure me to get the tests. I just signed a waiver. Enough said....

This talkative Santorum shows us he thinks he is God and can judge everyone's religion, and the proper approach to all medicine. That is very scary. He is more a control freak than Obama!!!

Santorum pushes his religious beliefs on the country, what if he was a MUSLIM pushing his religious beliefs. Wouldn't we then consider him a wacko terrorist ? Of course Islam is not terrorism but neither is Catholicism but shoving either of them down our throats creates HATE. That's exactly what he is doing. He is LYING and creating HATE by shoving his beliefs in our faces and lying about President Obama. BTW-I am also a Catholic but I sure don't act like this creep. He's an idiot and he doesn't deserve to be President , a person who has to represent ALL of the PEOPLE ,most who have different beliefs than he does.
