Fact check: Santorum says Obama looks down on disabled, encouraging more abortions

Rick Santorum accused President Obama of requiring free prenatal testing in the health care plan he signed in 2010 because it would detect if children were disabled, encourage more abortions and save money.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare -- another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum has a young disabled daughter, who has had several health complications.

Many doctors and medical experts would dispute Santorum's reasoning that the sole explanation for pre-natal testing is to have an abortion. There is value in pre-natal testing, because it can detect potential problems in utero or at delivery and allow parents and doctors to get the proper care for their child.

"Early detection of a fetal condition gives parents the opportunity to terminate the pregnancy in an early stage or to make the preparations necessary to best care for an affected child," Clare O'Connor, Ph.D., of the Biology Department at Boston College, wrote in Nature Education.

Santorum and those who support him are why for the first time I'm going to get involved with the political process beyond just voting.

America has to realize the religious right is incredibly dangerous. I think they've gained the power they have because too many don't think the theocracy they so clearly want could ever happen here.

It can, and we have to put them back where they should have been all along: voice shouting themselves hoarse in the wilderness.

I don't know of anyone who does not get pre-natal testing. It is not just for the health of the child but also the mother. Will someone please tell this 'effing nut, that the baby can be treated in the womb...IF THEIR PROBLEMS ARE DETECTED soon enough!!!

My daughter is catholic and would not get an abortion, yet she was pre-cautionary tested to make sure all was well. If not, maybe there would have been things they could have done for the child.

This man needs to shut the he!! up and take a biology lesson from 2012...not 1712!

SANATORUM IS A G.D. freaking piece of scum.

He is aweful! He is crazy!

Why are Republicans backing this lunatic? Pre-natal care is one of the best things that can be done for a pregnant woman and her baby. Of course requiring it will save money, but not in the way Santorum fears!

Santorum is a desperate little boy with a serious mental problem who is running a campaign AGAINST SEX AND AGAINST WOMEN. Maybe he thinks women are too stupid and pathetic to vote their self interest.

I suspect you'll see insane comments like this from Santorum every day. Just remember he isn't talking to the sane people in these states. He's running in Republican primaries and the base of that party agrees with every word. The republican base is crazy and will gladly vote for one of their own. Romney has a real problem because he will be unable to out crazy Rick. The only candidate who can do that is Gingrich.

The stage is set...enter SARAH !!! Seriously, she is waiting for the convention, she knows, and is encouraging,a brokered convention, its eminent. She avoids all the debates, all the cost, all the scrutiny, and jumps in with both feet. What could be a more perfect end to the GOP as we now know it !! I hope the next GOP is better...

Actually, cowboy, a brokered convention is the Republic Party's best hope. They have at best a marginal chance with Romney as the nominee, but the base doesn't want him. The few pros left in the Republic Party know they will face historic landslide losses with either Gingrich or Santorum, but the base loves them both. The party leaders will surely want a chance to square this particular circle at the convention...

"Do they really think...?" That's the entire question. And the answer is an unequivocal no.

As someone who is in the field as you obviously are I loved your comment. All amygdala and on top of that they suffer from severe cerebralanalopothy.

    they suffer from severe cerebralanalopothy.

What a brilliant word for it! Can't wait for a chance to use it in conversation.

I typically go with something like craniorectal inversion/insertion, but that's not as original. I will no doubt spend the next while working on new variations.

Thanks for that. Made my day.

      What a nut job.

Free pre-natal care is critical to ensure that women are healthy and babies are born healthy, thus reducing lifetime medical costs for women and their children.

Is there ANY limit to the stupidities this guy utters?

So now pre-natal tests are out of the question because HE says that they are used to perform abortions. And the sad fact is that the vast majority of the people who believe him, VOTE!!!!!

Complete bull. Obama wants to help those of us with disabilities, hence his health care plan, even though it still uses the current insurers. My only gripe is that he didn't go far enough and establish a single-payer system.

Tea Partiers are the ones who don't want those of us with disabilities getting health care with their "keep your government hands off my Medicare" insanity.
