Fact check: Santorum says Obama looks down on disabled, encouraging more abortions

Rick Santorum accused President Obama of requiring free prenatal testing in the health care plan he signed in 2010 because it would detect if children were disabled, encourage more abortions and save money.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare -- another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum has a young disabled daughter, who has had several health complications.

Many doctors and medical experts would dispute Santorum's reasoning that the sole explanation for pre-natal testing is to have an abortion. There is value in pre-natal testing, because it can detect potential problems in utero or at delivery and allow parents and doctors to get the proper care for their child.

"Early detection of a fetal condition gives parents the opportunity to terminate the pregnancy in an early stage or to make the preparations necessary to best care for an affected child," Clare O'Connor, Ph.D., of the Biology Department at Boston College, wrote in Nature Education.

Thank goodness this man opened his mouth as much as he did when he did! Now we understand what man of small stature he is. Hopefully the good people of Michigan and Arizona will offer up a big win to Mitt Romney and we can watch a real American presidential campaign this fall!

If Santorum really believes what he is saying, he is delusional (as well as desparate).

People whine about fair animal treatment. Yes, animals should be treated humanely. The way people talk about animal rights you would think they are human beings. My point? Well I think animals have more rights than unborn babies UNFORTUNATELY!

The problem I have with Mr. Santorum is that he oversimplifies everything. The issue of prenatal testing is an example of this. He has chosen to make this about his simple good and evil religious beliefs without discussing all that results from the testing. He projects his simple view and tells us that President Obama is evil because the only use for this testing is to justify abortion. This is lying to the public by omission. He is speaking to the public with the same kind of dogma with which he was raised in his church. Do not question anything that the church says. I was raised to question everything and understand as much about a topic as possible before I made my decision. It is frightening to think that such a narrow mind has come this close to being nominated for the most powerful position on this planet.

When Fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the Flag and carrying a Cross.

America, be careful, be very careful, about this election or you might just hasten it's arrival...

Yeah, I can can just see it now the OBGYN pulls out his/her gun and aims it at the woman's swollen belly and tells her to take the prenatal tests or we're going to terminate this pregnancy now! This guy Santorum is really a guy yelling fire in a crowded building. He is a nut! The fears he is creating should be against the law. I really want to throw up!

Obama is not a good president!!! he's one term president. He needs to start packing to go back to Chicago. The Country has enough broken promises , failure in his administration, all Obama does is campaigning for 3 years and !/2 to assure his re-election. It will not avail. Republicans will not give him another chance, NO OBAMA plase!!

That would be 220 promises kept (including 52 with compromises) as opposed to 63 broken. http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/promises/obameter/

So much for your standard Conservative lie about broken promises.
