Fact check: Santorum says Obama looks down on disabled, encouraging more abortions

Rick Santorum accused President Obama of requiring free prenatal testing in the health care plan he signed in 2010 because it would detect if children were disabled, encourage more abortions and save money.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare -- another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum has a young disabled daughter, who has had several health complications.

Many doctors and medical experts would dispute Santorum's reasoning that the sole explanation for pre-natal testing is to have an abortion. There is value in pre-natal testing, because it can detect potential problems in utero or at delivery and allow parents and doctors to get the proper care for their child.

"Early detection of a fetal condition gives parents the opportunity to terminate the pregnancy in an early stage or to make the preparations necessary to best care for an affected child," Clare O'Connor, Ph.D., of the Biology Department at Boston College, wrote in Nature Education.

To the Liberal Left- please educate yourselves. And you can start by stop reading biased, and twisted information - the kind that is found on MSNBC.

So, are you saying Santorum DIDN'T say this and someone just made up the story? How do you define biased? Do you think the story is true but embarrassing because you'd just as soon that Ricky is not to look like an out-of-touch fool? Please "educate" us about this issue -- without going off on another tangent.

On the positive side: it's good to know that in addition reading right wing propaganda you actually read stuff on MSNBC.

But Fox is OK, right? Right-wingers are totally unhinged in their reverence to the GOP media arm AKA Fox news. however, any other news outlet is suspect if they don't recite the mantra of far right talking points. Unbelievable.

Educate yourselves? You can make a connection between any two random things. That doesn't make it so.

Santorum doesn't understand the difference between causation and correlation.

It is a fact that most people who kill someone while driving drunk have taken and passed a drivers test. That doesn't mean drivers test lead DUI murder.

Wow, I think the campaign trail is getting a little too tough for Rick...

I don't like Obama, and I am not sure what he was thinking when he signed the healthcare bill, but I don't think it was a masterminding plan of trying to make people have abortions.

Rick, stick to the economy...it is all people care about...it is what most Americans are struggling with right now...

I think I have given up on ANY political leader for 2012. It should be Romney vs. Obama. Then try to figure out the lesser evil...

God knows that I have no love or respect for Barack Hussein Obama. As a liberal Democrat, I am looking for a candidate from the....SHUDDER!...GOP ranks.

If I were to vote for a Republican this time around, it certainly would not be Ricky S. Ricky S would have you believe that if affordable, available pre-natal testing were to remain, that abortion would automatically occur.

This is simply not the truth.

It is the duty of every parent to provide the best possible care for their child. Not pre-testing is not responsible parenting. A parent needs to know if detrimental health conditions exist, so that informed decisions can be made.

Ricky S represents everything I hate about the GOP...they would have you believe that THEIR way is the only way. They would have you believe that should pre-natal testing continue, every pregnancy would result in abortion. This is not true. Some parents might opt to abort a dangerous, difficult pregnancy that would likely result in a special needs child...SOME! But not all. Some parents would decide that they are up to the challenge, and continue the pregnancy. But at least they would be prepared for that event, as far as possible.

Rick Santorum disgusts me.

This is a very sick individual! To suggest that Obama wants more mothers to chose abortion is very evil. Furthermore, just google "Can Prenatal surgery save the life of a fetus?". If my child had a life threatening condition that could be corrected prior to birth, I would want to know.

I am a registered Republican who voted for Obama in 08 and have been hoping and praying for a Republican that I could vote for this time and it doesn't look possible the way it is going!

Santorum recently said that Obama is trying to impose his value system on Americans. And Santorum is not? Telling women that it is wrong to use birth control? When will they tell us that we can't eat meat on Fridays? When will they tell us we can't get married in a park, that we have to get married in the Church, or "His church"? How about what version of the bible we are allowed to buy?

Please give us a moderate, fiscally conservative Republican, that does not want to tell me what to do in my bedroom! If not, the GOP will be shaking their heads in November wondering why they lost again!!!

I am not a huge fan of Obama, but at least he trys to govern by what is the "law", not what his "personal" beliefs are.

Russ,

Whether Obama LOVES abortion or not is not the issue. The issue is Santorum wants to tell me that I should not have prenatal treatment or tests. My unborn child was considered high risk for down syndrome because I was over 35. After waying my options, I opted out of having an amnio because I knew that if the test came out positive for down syndrome, it wouldn't have changed the course of my pregnancy. In other words, I would not have chosen to abort my baby even if he was positive for down syndrome, so why have the test that could jeopardize my pregnancy? That being said, I did have other prenatal tests to check for other possible problems.

My sister had the same prenatal tests done and they found a heart defect because of having an ultrasound. With this heart defect, her baby would not live more than 48-72 hours after birth. Guess What? She didn't abort, she chose to have surgery for her unborn child. My niece is now 5 years old and runs around on the soccer field like every other child her age. Without the prenatal tests my niece would have died within 72 hours of being born. Are you going to tell mother's like my sister that they can't have life saving tests done because of choices that someone else might make? So even though I don't believe in abortion, you will sacrafice my unborn child because of what others might do?

God help you if someone you love is ever pregnant and their unborn child needs life saving treatment. So much for the GOP wanting the government to stay out of our lives. It is people like you that keeps pushing me further and further away for right!

Or, how about, one Nation under the Goddess? In the Goddess we trust???

Wow, let's not leave out the Flying Spaghetti Monster... Rastafarian's could be very upset... Demand equal time and representation!

Santorum Quote.......People have the right to do it (amniocentesis), but to have the government force people to provide it free, to me, is a bit loaded......EndQuote

Rick Santorum is wrong on so many levels:

1. Apparently, he believes only women wealthy enough to afford prenatal tests (i.e. amniocentesis) should receive such.

2. Santorum either does not know or ignores the fact that prenatal tests (i.e. amniocentesis) can SAVE the life of an unborn.

3. Will Santorum next propose that poor women be denied access to sonograms on the premise that such a test might reveal information that would motivate an abortion?

Please, please Rick....We (democrats) fervently hope you win the GOP nomination. So, stop talking. But, if you must say something, make sure it isn't absurd. When in doubt, smile and look pious.

So, let me get this straight: the only time Republicans are in favor of prenatal testing is when it's medically unnecessary, i.e. requiring transvaginal ultrasounds for women who are seeking an abortion.

Is it just me, or is this just a little peculiar?

Tom, with out a doubt Santorum is a loon but he's a perfect candidate for the no-nothings that make up the hard core GOP base. The base would vote for any dope as long as they opposed a woman's right to choose. They really don't care to have a dialogue concerning issues that are important to the country, just oppose all things sexual and you're qualified to run for office.

The more Santorum talks, the more apparent it becomes on why he wasn't reelected to the Senate. Suggesting that we stop prenatal testing just because he's against abortion ignores the fact that the same testing might actually SAVE a life. He's way off base here and is TOO FAR RIGHT TO WIN A GENERAL ELECTION!

The bible, as with all religious doctrines, teaches sincere humility as the only righteous way and to egotistically tout oneself as holy above others, just isn’t any real guided path. A Christian heretic is no better than a terrorist as while they egotistically claim their quality, both literally perform against their own religious teachings. We saw GWBush presented as a “born again Christian” but as a text-book sociopath, without any real conscience, he was a fraud and just served his own interests and the interests of “the few”, costing the country greatly.

We really don’t need to be manipulated again, the cost is just too great, and there is very good reason that politics and religion should keep strict separation - compromise and acceptance of differences are necessary for progress in politics; with religion that would be very difficult, if at all possible. We see areas around the world where people support political positions based on egotistic religious affiliations and there we also see the shortcomings, the drastic abuses and even the evil committed. Just declaring that everything has to be only one way is counter productive and our forefathers clearly understood that - check the constitution. To ignore all of that is totally scary.

In losing a message again that was sent from here, it made me think about something. It's nice to know but worrisome that technology and the controlled internet can lead us & limit us through it's versatility and promises of independence and ease. As it becomes the medium to our lives, souls & all communications, where will we be if someone limits it or takes it away? If we become so dependent that we can't communicate or function without it? No longer concerned about what others may be able to see, but realizing too late that someone has the ability to control or limit you & me. What happened to my message I just sent?

                Reply#409 - Mon Feb 20, 2012 6:39 PM EST

There is no evidence that anyone in the U.S. is supporting prenatal health so that people can find out about a mental defect in a fetus and abort it. Actually most loving, liberal parents, upon finding a fetus with Rick Santorum's mental ability, would carry him to term. They just wouldn't encourage him to run for president.
