Fact check: Santorum says Obama looks down on disabled, encouraging more abortions

Rick Santorum accused President Obama of requiring free prenatal testing in the health care plan he signed in 2010 because it would detect if children were disabled, encourage more abortions and save money.

"One of the things that you don't know about ObamaCare in one of the mandates is they require free prenatal testing," Santorum began telling about 400 people here. "Why? Because free prenatal testing ends up in more abortions and, therefore, less care that has to be done, because we cull the ranks of the disabled in our society. That too is part of ObamaCare -- another hidden message as to what president Obama thinks of those who are less able than the elites who want to govern our country."

Santorum has a young disabled daughter, who has had several health complications.

Many doctors and medical experts would dispute Santorum's reasoning that the sole explanation for pre-natal testing is to have an abortion. There is value in pre-natal testing, because it can detect potential problems in utero or at delivery and allow parents and doctors to get the proper care for their child.

"Early detection of a fetal condition gives parents the opportunity to terminate the pregnancy in an early stage or to make the preparations necessary to best care for an affected child," Clare O'Connor, Ph.D., of the Biology Department at Boston College, wrote in Nature Education.

Hey Rick - would you still oppose abortion if your daughter was raped by a BLACK MAN?!

WTF! I'm at a loss for words. If I was Rick Perry I'd be thinking about jumping back in about now. Hell, even Michelle Bachmann might look smart standing next to Klantorum.

Just when you think the GOP has reached the bottom of the cesspool, along comes a candidate to dig it deeper with his phony, hypocritical judgments and asinine comments. Oh well. Obama will walk to reelection in November with bottom feeders like Santorum carrying the standard for the right wing lunatic fringe.

I’m sure that Mr. Santorum is a caring man and would like to
have a good outcome for all of our citizens but his policy proposals would
leave out a large part of our populous. I disagree with Mr. Santorum’s critique
of the president at times his speech is overly harsh and he seems to be trying put
words in Mr. Obama’s mouth. Even though I do not agree with Mr. Santorum I’m
open to any positive ideas that he may bring forward. So far I know that he has
a low opinion of the president but I have no idea of what Mr. Santorum will do
for poor and low income workers.

I continue to be astounded by the monumental stupidity of the people that listen to Rick Santorum - I mean, Santorum might be a moron, but what's your excuse for going along with him?

Folks who have disabled / special needs loved ones in their care are all too aware of the continuous assault they are under through the "pre-existing condition" clauses (and abuses) of insurance carriers. The Patient Protections and Affordable Care Act - I guess some opponents use the term "Obamacare" because they can't string together that many words on a reliable basis - is the first major step taken by Congress to stop these deplorable practices against those who have no defense. I don't know if this legislation is going to resolve all the problems, but it's a start to give people who nobody gave a chance to reach the age of 12 months, a chance to get at least obtain some level of medical care.

As a parent of a special needs child, I am stunned that Santorum, also the parent of a special needs child, would seek to return to the abuses of the past. But then again, Santorum has a lot more more money and connections than myself or the vast majority of parents and guardians I come in contact with. So, I suppose he doesn't really see what the rest of us go through. I'm glad for him and his family - I truly am; but it would be nice if he showed a little compassion for the rest of the people not in his shoes.

This is the socialist ideology an ideology that has the idea that if you are not productive or not going to be productive then you are not doing or are not going to be doing your "fair" share and therefore must die.

There is no basis for your statement and it makes no sense whatsoever. Do you or any of the idiot pundits on FauxNews even know what socialism is?

I know what Socialism is and to find it in action I don't have to look any further than the White-house. Only Obama calls it "spreading around the wealth." How is that working for you. Me personally, I hope for a change is 2012.

@Joyce: if that's your "example of socialism in action", you need to seriously consider repeating 7th grade history ... providing that you made it that far in the first place.

... and you are aware, of course, that all the major American socialist organizations regularly condemn Obama and are actually more unhappy with his anit-socialist policies than they were with Bush - they think Obama is too much of a capitalist. I guess he just can't please anyone in your parallel universe.

How many of his children's misfortunes is he going to use for political gain? There is no end to how low this man can go, he's got some real issues.

The more this man speaks the crazier he sounds. He certainly is on a moralistic roll. He really should check his own behavior - he is grasping at anything and everything in the name of religion and/or his twisted Catholic views. This man is very frightening and certainly not qualified to be President of the United States. Saying the President is not caring or helping of the handicapped or disabled is an outright lie. Santorum sounds as though he is using the genetic disease his daughter suffers from as an excuse for his accusations against the President. I think he is wrong in bringing his daughter/illness into his political rhetoric. He is using his daughter and the hardship of others to gain political clout - not very classy.

Santorum is like this right wing religious dude in Australia, spewing his crap. The Aussie guy was in religious training to be a priest, didn't make it, for In a secular society, one must accept secular values. If they do not match your own that's fine. Keep your beliefs and live your life according to the rules you have chosen.

The so called pious in relgigious organization do not have to accept contraception if it is against their beliefs.

Right wing and fundamental Christian types are no different from other radical religions.

incase you dont remember for 2 years obama did great untill fox news feared all the ignorant rednecks into voting in teabagger congressmen and senators and since then there have been stalls in passing bills unless the repubs get to change them around and government shutdown threats and if you didnt know already the president cant make laws he can write bills and submit them to congress and the senate for consideration of passing them but if the congress says no and the senate says no then they dont pass obama can veto the bills but then they can just go around him and vote the bills into legislature anyway sad commentary on the voters who put those bad congressmen and senators into office just because they vowed to make obama a one term president and the voters that did that only voted them in because they dont want a black president sad bigotry and ignorance as well as fear ruined a once great nation in 2 years unless you feel like counting the 8 years before obama

Wow,the Republicans worse enemy in this election is... their own candidates. Romney says corporations are people. Santorum says prenatal testing is some sort eugenics program. I have to say,he took the prize with that one. Pretty much EVERY SINGLE WOMAN knows what prenatal testing is and why its done and wants it done so they can take steps to protect their baby when its born. Its a normal part of pregnancy. This does tell me one thing about Santorum. Apperantly he was absent during the 8 times his wife was pregnant.

Like I said all along. Mitt Romney will be the GOP Nominee and our next President for eight years. All this "campaigning" is just a forum for Mitt to sell himself to the undecided independents who are really fed up with Obama.

Listen for the audible sigh of relief from thousands of businesses across the land when Obama gives his concession speech. In fact, that would be a great time for some fireworks. The true start of a real recovery.

              Romney 2012.

The problem is everybody -- and I mean even the most lowly of the low -- see through all the lies and deceptions they employ. These boobs live in an alternate universe; one you and I will never know or understand. They don't live, think or view things at "street level" . . . If a man the likes of Santorum is ever allowed access to the powers the white house would guarantee him, America best ready itself for a trip back in time to the 18th century . . . that's where his head's at!
