Obama agenda: 'We did not fully comprehend … how deep this crisis would be'

“While acknowledging that ‘change is hard,’ President Obama touted the nation's economic progress on his watch during a celebrity-studded fundraising stopover Wednesday night in Los Angeles,” The L.A. Times writes. And he said when running for president in 2008: "We did not fully comprehend at that point how deep this crisis would be.” Then talking about the jobs created in recent months, he said, "Don't underestimate the changes we made."

“Vice President Joe Biden will be visiting Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Rhode Island next Thursday to fundraise and campaign for President Obama,” the Boston Globe reports.

Just a little FYI... you do NOT have a "Republican Congress".

You have a Republican controlled House of Representatives. (THAT'S IT!)

Remember Congress is made up of TWO bodies... the House of Representatives and the SENATE! Democrats control the Senate. (fool)

If you want to play the blame-game toss some of your blame at Harry Reid and his cronies in the Senate since they have blocked EVERYTHING that the HoR has passed their way!

So once again, we see the liberals here twisting the facts to try to support their delusions.

The person who didn't see the economic meltdown coming the most was McCain, or should I say McCain/Palin, not like Palin has a clue about anything. Certainly no one knew the extent, and why comments made during President Obama's campaign (which the right-wing tries to use against him) are fallacious. Imagine all the goals the president had to put aside due to one crisis after another as soon as he took office.

SickOfTheBickering -- You post here regularly, so either you swoop and poop, or are just incapable of comprehension and retention of information posted repeatedly as follows:

After the 2010 midterm election, the Teapublicans gained an historic majority in the House, and it became about 50/50 in the Senate. Taking into account record-level non-stop filibusters in the Senate by Teapublicans, thus requiring a Super Majority of 60 votes on everything, well by conniving and shenanigans it is fair to say we have a Republican Congress.

So it's also fair to ask them, where are the JOBS? Throw out the Do Nothing Teapublican obstructionists, and then we'll finally see progress.

right to work = lower paying jobs and no benefits!

right to work states have lowest incomes, lowest amount of people with health insurance and schools which rank at the very bottom of the academic ladder, creating a very high drop out rate, and a much higher illiteracy rate!

We were headed to a healthy economic recovery until Republicans took the House in 2010 and put the brakes on the renewing confidence with their doom and gloom rhetoric and endless obstructionism.

It's well known that a big factor in economic recovery is consumer confidence, but the Republicans spread fear and uncertainty the moment they were given the House majority, and they attacked working people in states that gave Republicans governorships and legislatures. The Republican agenda is clear: protect the weathy and their low tax rates, at the expense of public workers, and improvements to education and infrastructure.

Sorry Amy but I must disagree. There was very little "movement" prior to the 2010 elections and only since they took the House has American business seen a halt to the runaway ridiculous agenda of the Obama administration and the full three branch government. Once business saw the brakes were being applied (save some executive orders and further czar appointments) things started getting better. Just some food for thought for you from the other side of the fence.

the Republicans spread fear and uncertainty the moment they were given the House majority,

Actually if you look back, the uncertainty started in mid 2008 when the certainty was that Obama was to be the next president and the full Congress was Democrat controlled. Only since the 2011 seats were sat in, has a true recovery of confidence taken place. The runaway train's brakes were being applied and the signs were read and the train was seen to be on the wrong track.

I disagree as well, Amy.

Republicans in the House drafted and passed numerous bills designed to restore confidence and start the economic recovery... only to have those bills stalled in the Senate by Harry Reid.

American business, the American public and the world as a whole lost confidence in our economy AFTER Obama and the democrats went on that spending spree. A spending spree that was presented as a boost to economic recovery, but turned out to be nothing more than a give-away of freebies to Obama's cronies and those citizens that were gaming the system. (democratic voters that is...)

The economy is showing small signs of recovery despite the actions of our inexperienced President, NOT because of him.

SteveH USA, do you also believe things would've been worse without the stimulus? Of course you don't, so your statement is not valid either. Stick to the facts - the President has done what he's done and the economy is improving. Leave "woulda, coulda, shoulda" to the media pundits.

No, the economy is recovering despite every possible obstruction by the Republicans, including their concerted efforts to undermine the country's credit standing. Republicans are deeply invested in the failure of the economy, and as it improves, it becomes a greater and greater political liability for them.

That's why we see the hyperventilation of the Chrysler ad at the Super Bowl, that's why we see flat-out expressions of disbelief at the job creation numbers. The Republicans have painted themselves into a corner: they have bet against the American people and the American economy. And now it's time to pay off those bets.

A new President must make more than 3,000 political appointments when he comes into power, a tall order. In addition, he must rely on people in other branches of government. This is where Obama made a number of real blunders.

1. Tim Geithner is at the top of the list. Geithner cheated on his taxes, got caught, and paid fines. That in itself should have disqualified him for the Treasury Secretary position since the Internal Revenue Service is part of Treasury. What message does appointing him send to the American people? But there is more: Geithner was in charge at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York at the time of the AIG bailout (under the Bush presidency). You might remember that AIG staff thought they could get banks to agree to settle for 60 cents on the dollar. Geithner said no, pay the banks in full. That decision cost the American taxpayers $37 billion. Yet somehow, Geithner’s track record was not enough to deter Obama from appointing him. A bonehead decision!

2. Larry Summers is Director of the White House National Economic Council. Summers started as an academic followed by senior positions in the Clinton administration. Following a short stint the President of Harvard University, Summers started working in the financial industry.

Summers …collected roughly $5.2 million in compensation from hedge fund D.E. Shaw …and was paid more than $2.7 million in speaking fees by several troubled Wall Street firms and other organizations. . . .Financial institutions including JP Morgan Chase, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Lehman Brothers and Merrill Lynch paid Summers for speaking appearances in 2008. Fees ranged from $45,000 for a Nov. 12 Merrill Lynch appearance to $135,000 for a one-day visit to Goldman Sachs.

Rub, it wasn't only poor choices in his appointments that hurt Obama, he deferred to Democrats in Congress on the writing of his fiscal stimulus! He fought for a big total, but he paid much less attention to what was included in the total. The predictable result: a stimulus that most economists condemn as very poorly designed.

And last year he again passed the buck by creating a Super Committee split equally between Democrats and Republicans.... was anyone but Barry surprised that decision was doomed to failure?

When his first term is properly scrutinized, no one will be able to come up with a good reason to let him repeat!

Not to mention one of their own, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa of Los Angeles, having an affair on his also cancer fighting wife. He even stepped down from the DNC after the scandal was brought out. Didn't see much of that in the MSM.

every president is inexperienced!

this economy is a direct response to the actions by the last unexperienced president, his two unfunded wars, his removal of regulations, especially in regards to the commodities market ie; gas and food prices.

the pubs fear tactics worked in 2010, but will not work again thanks to the pub house, but more important thanks to so many of the new pub govenors who have worked dilligently to destroy human rights!

No facts from you, Bickering. Just taunts and insults to us "libbies."

My personal opinion is based on the facts: because President Obama was elected, and the House had a Democratic majority for two years, young adults can stay on their parent's health insurance policies till they are 26. Insurance companies cannot drop you if you become sick. Gay people can serve in the miltary. I could go on, but I am sure you have stopped reading by now, becauseyou can't stand to hear the facts.

Unemployment applications drop to a 4-year low

    February 16, 2012 9:35 AM ET

    By CHRISTOPHER S. RUGABER

WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell to the lowest point in almost four years last week, the latest signal that the job market is steadily improving.

Weekly applications for unemployment benefits dropped 13,000 to a seasonally adjusted 348,000, the Labor Department said Thursday. It was the fourth drop in five weeks and the fewest number of claims since March 2008 — six months before Lehman Brothers collapsed and only a few months into the Great Recession.

The four-week average, which smooths out fluctuations in the weekly data, fell for the fifth straight week to 365,250. The average has fallen nearly 13 percent in the past year.

There's that sneaky "seasonally adjusted" gremlin again. Kind of like that seasonally adjusted number for January that saw a drop of .2% in the UE rate when indeed there was a 250,000 drop in jobs total from December to January.

Figures don't lie but........liars figure. Everything's coming up roses!!!!

    Wow, MORE GREAT NEWS!

General Motors reported a record annual profit Thursday, just two years after the nation's largest automaker emerged from bankruptcy with the help of a federal bailout.

With rivals Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) and Chrysler Group having already reported profits for last year, 2011 marked the first time since 2004 that all three major U.S. automakers were profitable at the same time. Chrysler also filed for bankruptcy and received federal assistance in 2009.

    Thank you President Obama!!

    Some more great news!!

New home construction got off to a strong start for the year, with housing starts and building permits rising in January on a monthly and annual basis -- another sign that the U.S. housing market and broader economy are headed in the right direction.

    The Truth:
There was a bill in the 111th Congress, House Bill, HR-4646, the Debt Free America Act, that was introduced on February 23, 2010, but it died in committee and was never voted on or passed into law. Some versions of this eRumor allege that the bill was being sneaked into law by members of Congress but that is also fiction.
