Kennedy set to make bid for Congress official

Joseph P. Kennedy III will announce his candidacy for Congress on Thursday, making a bid for the Massachusetts seat held by the retiring Rep. Barney Frank (D).

Kennedy, a Democrat and the grandson of Robert F. Kennedy, is slated to make his long-rumored candidacy official tomorrow with a campaign video announcement in the morning followed by a half dozen events throughout the district.

Kennedy has been exploring a bid for the seat since Frank, a veteran congressman, said that he wouldn't seek re-election this fall.

The current Congress marked the first one with no Kennedy member elected to the House or Senate in over 63 years following the retirement of Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-RI).

Yay, and Elizabeth Warren too. Sure as heck couldn't bare to see Frank's seat lost to a Teapublican the way Ted Kennedy's seat was to Scott Brown -- Scott Brown who co-sponsored the Blunt amendment to allow any business to deny coverage of any prescription or procedure which conflicts with an owner's faith, ideology or beliefs. OMG!

Biden's son Beau, now there's a rising star -- lots of good future candidates for Democrats. Not so much for Teapublicans and their failed platform. Well maybe the GOP/TP will wise up and get a new platform.

I've been telling people for more than a year to keep their eyes on Elizabeth Warren. When someone askes me what the Democrats have after Obama's next four I point to Warren immediately. There is some great stuff on her on youtube and she has had some great spots on the Daily Show.

Quick, tell the Occupy Wall Street loonies...maybe they will pitch a tent and take a crap outside her office...

An entire family with almost more wealth than God and a moral track record that is reprehensible, but because they are Democrats, it is something to be cheered??????? What happened to the hateful 1% and the self serving who don't care about the little person etc. Why aren't the Kennedy's being encouraged to divest themselves of their filthy financial well being in the name of the poor? Why aren't they being bashed for being unabashedly Roman Catholic and therefore not participants (in theory) or in support of abortion. I am just so amazed that there is all this excitement for a family that represents everything that people have been lambasting in these threads for weeks as if it were the unique province of Republicans.

True. They had John Jr. running for years before his death. (Looking for a Hollywood type of ending/beginning perhaps?)

Despite the whole revolution thing-y, we as a nation have a desire for and a fascination with royalty:

From Clark "the King" Gable to Elvis, "the King" Presley, to Michael the "King of Pop" Jackson, we have "crowned" our own group of "royals" and the Kennedys encompass that ideal more than any other American family. When it comes to endings, while many have been "Hollywood" for the family, far too few have been happy...

True, But I don't think he was really into politics, besides he was always under Ted's shadow. Teddy would have been a much more powerful democrat if he had ditched the liberal side of the party and ran on more of Jack's platform....

John F. Kennedy was the President of the United States when he was murdered

Senator Robert F. Kennedy was murdered while running for the Democratic party's nomination for President.

Edward "Teddy" Kennedy, who cost an innocent woman her life in an auto accident, served in the senate for over 4 decades introducing and promoting legislation that will affect the lives of Americans for the foreseeable future.

Robert F. Kennedy was also the U.S. Attorney General.

Joseph Kennedy Jr was a bomber pilot when he was killed in WWII.

Eunice Kennedy Shriver founded the Special Olympics.

Caroline Kennedy is an author and attorney.

Maria Shriver was a television news anchor before becoming First Lady of California.

RFK's daughter Kathleen Kennedy was the former Lt. Governor of Maryland.

Patrick Kennedy II was a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island.

The number of third and fourth generation Kennedy's who are successful attorneys and/or heads of well-known non-profit organizations are almost too numerous to mention.

Does anyone here know what Joseph E. Parent does for a living?

Actually, Bobby was shot just after winning California, and enough delegates to be the democrat nominee. He was a party unifier, the democrat party back then was divided between factions, and Bobby was bringing them all together. Without any doubt, he would have been President, and I think a great one.

Which is also the reason I believe he was killed. that was the last time I worked with the Democrat Party.

The Democrat Party of today is a shadow of what it was under Jack and Bobby.....

Suppose his name was Bush (Jeb?) would those same folks who are ready willing and able to criticize Kennedy for his family connections be as critical?

I am glad that Joe is running and I hope he wins. Lord knows there are plenty of folks in his family to offer advise on what to do in the job.

Joe is a prosecuter and worked in the Peace Corps. so he isn't sitting around doing nothing. It seems to me that he wants to participate in the family business, politics, just like other people do.

The Kennedys are the epitome of liberalism.

They entered politics to "help people".

The people they most helped was themselves.

Nonprofits, my foot. They sunk their snouts into the taxpayers wallets, and helped themselves to millions, paying for their vacation homes in Florida and Cape Cod. All the while bashing the "rich".

At least the original Joe Kennedy made his fortune the old fashioned way...he stole it, by being a bootlegger.

Bob in Va........if you are going to denigrate someone at least get your facts straight that way, we'll know your sincere in your rant.

You wrote: they sunk their snouts into the taxpayers wallets, and helped themselves to millions, paying for their vacation homes in Florida and Cape Cod. All the while bashing the "rich".

The Kennedy's have owned property on Cape Cod since the early 1920's, the compound is around six acres and has several houses on it that belong to Kennedy family members. The family no longer owns a home in Palm Beach, it was sold in 1995. If they come, they use hotels or rent a home.

The Kennedy's while flawed as we all are, have always had a very strong sense of social justice and have stood up for the 'little guy'.....the voiceless.

You may not like them for whatever your reasons may be, but they have a legacy of service to country, many good deeds, great legislation and leadership the likes of which we in this country most likely will never again know. And mores the pity.

              GB Momma,

Joe Kennedy was appointed the first SEC commissioner by FDR, then was sentenced to England (as ambassador) by FDR because he wasn't "Liberal" enough for a cabinet post, it was a real slam of the day back then. Most thought he should have been Secretary of War or at least Secretary of State for the fundraising efforts he made for FDR.

Yes he made his millions bootlegging Jamaican rum into long island and blended Canadian Whiskey unto upstate New York amongst other things. (At the repeal of Prohibition, Kennedy and FDR's son James Roosevelt traveled to Scotland to buy distribution rights for Scotch whiskey. In addition, Kennedy had purchased spirits-importation rights from Schenley Industries, a firm in Canada.

He was also forced to resign his position as ambassador for statements to the effect that Democracy was finished in England while England was being bombed to hell by Germany. The outcry was such that he had to resign.

You should also learn about his anti-semetic stances and his favorable views of Nazi Germany concerning the Jews and that what Germany was doing to Jews so openly was hurting their (the Nazi's) image in the US....

Joe Kennedy was a real piece of work...

Egilman....... I am more than familiar with the back story on the Kennedy's> I don't need to 'learn' about it.....little presumptious there aren't you?

As with all of us in life, being human we are all flawed..you included. For while you want to paint them in the negative, their good deeds and their work far out weighs anything else.

All you know is what you have read through others lenses, mostly to make money and unless you knew them personally or knew people who worked for them, you are a making assumptions and passing judgement.

                  #8.3 - Thu Feb 16, 2012 9:59 AM EST

                  GB Momma,

I wasn't intending on being presumptuous at all, neither was I attempting to "School" you. You do not seem to need such an approach from anyone given the intelligence of your many posts here on the vine.

Please do not take the matronly tone with me, I have had the benefits of a classical education also. We are all flawed in many ways and it is sad to see such revealed here on the vine multiple times daily. All I was doing is revealing the truth, building upon your post with facts that most seem to be unaware of. Unfortunately, there are some of our hero's from yesteryear that had foibles that would ostracize them in today's society, the Kennedy's are no exception.

I will repeat my position that if Jack Kennedy were running in today's presidential election cycle, I would readily rejoin the Democrat Party and vote for him. He was a leader, and we are sorely lacking in such people from both political parties today.

I'm 65, I was alive and becoming politically active when Jack was elected president. Yes I did personally know a number of people associated with him when I got involved, although I never got the chance to meet him in person. Saying that I have no place to speak or I'm making assumptions is incorrect, I do not believe that you were attempting to minimize me or my post, but it could be construed that way.

I do not choose to look through rose colored glasses, and look at historical people in the full light of day in the context of their time. None of them should be judged by anyone, nor by today's standards.

I'm sorry that someone who belongs to such a revered family in America, especially by the Democrats amongst us, was a raging bigot and a Nazi sympathizer. You cannot understand the man fully unless you know his positions. Thomas Jefferson kept slaves and occasionally slept with them, in the context of history, that was the norm, in today's world he would be ostracized into hiding if not put in jail for a very long time.

Joe Kennedy was a great American as was Thomas Jefferson, beside their foibles.

To claim that I am passing judgment is incorrect, I was just elaborating on a point you originally brought up.

I'm not one of the emotional uneducated rantors here on the vine, please don't treat me as one.

                    #8.4 - Thu Feb 16, 2012 2:32 PM EST

Joseph Kennedy was as much a robber baron as anyone else in his generation. He made millions and those millions were channelled into his children, through whom he hoped to fulfill his political aspirations as his own personal life would not have withstood the scrutiny of a political life. Yes, he lost his "heir apparent" in WWII, and his focus shifted to John. John's life was engineered completely as to what his father believed was necessaryto become president. His father was probably the first founder of a Super Pac, although it wouldn't be called such at the time. But that doesn't change the fact that, as adult men, the Kennedy's have always behaved poorly, whether married or not. Sooooooo, back to my original point, why is it OK for a Kennedy, but not for Newt, or Herman Cain, or anyone else who happens to wear the banner of being conservative.
