Romney retools stump speech to emphasize leadership, Massachusetts record

MESA, Ariz.
-- Returning to the campaign trail for the first time since claiming small, if welcome, victories in Maine and at the CPAC straw poll, Mitt Romney tonight unveiled a retooled stump speech in which he drew broad biographical contrasts with his Republican rivals, and devoted more time than usual to his record as Massachusetts governor.

"I'm sure there are some issues here and there where we can point out distinctions," Romney said of his rivals for the GOP nomination. "But perhaps the greatest distinction is what we've done during our lives, our life experiences ... Congressman Paul was a doctor, then went into government, but the other guys have spent their life entirely in government, and in my view it's helpful to have been involved in two businesses, an Olympics and a state ...  and to have a chance to run those as an executive."

"We elected in President Obama someone who had never run anything, who had never been a leader. We're not going to do that in the Republican Party. Let's not nominate someone who hasn't done anything and has not been a leader," Romney continued.

Romney's speech tonight before a crowd of at least two thousand vocal supporters outside Phoenix seemed to build on his address to the CPAC conference in Washington last week, in which he looked to bolster his conservative credentials in large part by highlighting elements of his record as governor of Massachusetts, which traditionally takes a back seat on the stump to his record as a businessman.

Romney ran through a laundry list of accomplishments from his tenure as Massachusetts governor, including everything from balancing budgets and improving the school system -- to more controversial battles like those over illegal immigration and same-sex marriage, which Massachusetts' Supreme Court legalized during Romney's term.

"I led the fight to get an amendment to our constitution to reverse that ruling," Romney said of the court's decision to allow same sex marriage, echoing his CPAC speech. "We missed by one vote. Even in a legislature that's 85 percent Democrat. But we went to make sure that we didn't have our same sex marriage go throughout the country and we were able to enforce -- I think it was a 1913 law -- that kept Massachusetts from becoming the Las Vegas of same sex marriage."

""We made sure we enforced immigration laws by empowering our state police to have the capacity to work with ICE to get those who are here illegally out of our state," Romney told the crowd here to loud applause. That policy, however, was never implemented, as the incoming Democratic administration quickly repealed it after Romney left office.

Romney's speech tonight did not just include new thematic elements, but also continued Romney's news-of-the-day attacks on President Obama. Today, it was the budget in his crosshairs.

"He unfortunately came out with another trillion dollar deficit," Romney said over the boos of the crowd." And if I recall, he said back in his election he said that he was going to cut in half the deficit by the end of the first term. Well he did just the opposite - he doubled it by the end of his first term."

One element of Romney's stump speech not to change? His recitation of his favorite lyrics of "America the Beautiful," which the audience seemed to be expecting. As Romney began to talk about the song, several members of the crowd shouted loudly: "Sing it!

We've got 1 Big Government Liberal with a trillion dollars, 1 pseudo conservative washington insider worthless excuse for a human being, 1 conservative without a dime in his pocket, and a true fiscal conservative with a loony too world view....In the end, I don't think I could vote to replace 1 Big Government Liberal with another one, just because of the color of his skin, or the letter before his name...especially knowing it will cost our nation 1/2 trillion dollars in extra transition costs...I hope the Conservatives in this nation realize that a vote for Romney is a vote for Obama...

Romney epitomizes the good and the bad of the GOP. On the one hand, he wants to overturn a law that allows same-sex marriage. Backward and homophobic. But on the other he decries a budget with yet another $1 trillion deficit we can't afford.

Then we have Obama wanting social justice for all (yay), but spending us into oblivion (boo).

Why can't we have fiscally responsible candidates who don't want to ram the Bible down our throats?

I'm a Fiscal Conservative / Social Libertarian...I would love to vote for one of me...the real problem is when you combine those 2, you come up with a guy who would allow you to do what ever you wanted, and then refuse to care if your choices lead to injury or disease...The only health-care I would support is for victims of others negligence...If you gambled your life savings in the stock market, you would starve to death after the crash...I have very little compassion for stupid people doing stupid things, and believe the human gene-pool would be better off without their contribution...and definetly have no desire to pay for their VD treatments

Oh, right, that was a different audience. What was I thinking. The man will say whatever you want him to say, if he thinks it will win your vote.

And you're telling me that Obama doesn't do the very same thing- but on a whole new level?? He changes the message AND the WAY he speaks- the cadence, inflection, tone and even slang/dialect to suit the audience!

Talk about pandering- that our Prez!

Mesa, Arizona has traditionally been a Mormon town. Now there are a lot of Hispanics, so that explains some of the illegal immigration rhetoric in this speech as well. The Tea Party is very strong in Arizona too--like Nevada. Willard does need to talk more about his record as governor, but for every pro there is a con in that record.

Leadership does not come from being a businessman or even being a governor. That's a bumper sticker concept. Romney lives in a bubble -- He has never known adversity in his life, or even just being criticized. He has book smarts, but lacks real world common sense and is a bit naive (the Mormon culture thing) -- definitely out of touch.

President Obama is the real American story, plus being African American with a funny name, but nothing was handed to him. The true test is walking into an immense crisis as President Obama did, and proving time and again your metal, whether taking the risk to go in after bin Laden -- Or heck, taking on Wall Street knowing full well you will lose campaign contributions.

Addressing income inequality, fair taxation, improving the economy, investing in our future and most of all restoring the American Dream fo ALL -- No Republican is going to do these things, no matter how hard they try to sell themselves.

You sometimes wonder how a candidate garners the most unlikely vote without costing a few million in ads. Here is an excerpt from the BBC's investigators.

Jews Asher and Rosa Rapp Wiesenthal were baptised in proxy ceremonies in the US states of Arizona and Utah in January, records show.

The Mormon religion allows baptism after death, and believes the departed soul can then accept or reject the baptismal rites.

An agreement in 1995 was supposed to ban the practice of baptising by proxy Holocaust victims, after it was discovered the names of hundreds of thousands of those who died had been entered into Mormon records.

Evidence that Wiesenthal's parents had been baptised was found by Helen Radkey, a researcher and former Mormon, AP reported.

She regularly checks the Church' s database, and also recently found the names of Nobel laureate and Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel and several family members on the Mormon list.

So this is how to get the Jewish vote?

As the shout out from the crowd"Sing It", Mitch has changed his tune.

He has not gotten very far with his emphasis on being a CEO of Bain venture capital firm. He just shows off his lack of understanding of the middle class. So now his tune is" I was a Governor, I know how to lead". But the new verses are that he was a moderate on fiscal and social issues.

Meanwhile Santorum is ahead in every county in Michigan except Mitts home county, Oakland.

Cracks me up every time Romney touts "Leading the 2002 Olympics" as an example of his leadership abilities.

Romney was brought in as the "face" of the games to counter the previous scandal. He didn't manage the games or its operations.

The team that actually DID plan and manage the games won Project of the Year from the Project Management Institute.

Just search: 2003 pmi project of the year
or: des news 2002 olympics project of the year

He should also stop qouting "America the Beautiful" — it's clear he doesn't understand the real meaning of the song and he sure wouldn't like the author — a lesbian that was disillusioned by the economic inequality, greed and excesses of the Gilded Age.

DVG - You are absolutely right on that one - being in Utah "Home of the Mormons" Orrin Hatch brought Romney in to so called save the Olympics

Willard left before the games were over

Plus - $1.3 Billion of Federal Money - yes folks billion dollars were spent on these Olympics - 4 times the amount of any monies spent on any Olympics on our soil

Could Orrin Hatch have anything to do with that?

You're joking of course! But why should I be surprised...

Romney was brought in after the games were $379 BILLION in debt- he solved the budget and got it back into solvency- AND got the sponsors back on board- all of which were threatening to withhold donations and sponsorships until the scandal/bribery charges were investigated and taken care of.

Might want to actually check the real facts before believing the crap some pass off as "facts" on FR.

If Mittens wants to win, he needs to run on a platform other than "I'm not the other guy" and "You too can get rich selling staplers - made in foreign countries - to each other." I'd like to see an original idea out of this guy / his camp that he could stick with so I could see whether he's worth a serious look. When is Romney going to tell us how he is going to fix this mess he and his corporate/financial buddies got us into? Was his answer for us to let our houses go back to the banks so him and his rich investor friends could buy them up and rent them out to the very people that not only lost their jobs but everything else they worked for? I find it ironic that we look down on the Chinese Government for treating its people like slaves when I don't feel we are being treated any different. Wasn't it Bush that did away with the 40 hour work week and didn't he want to do away with minimum wage? My memory isn't as good as it used to be so I may be wrong.

Economic Plan: Foreclose on homes (that were mostly already owned by mortgage company investors.) Then will have more (or the same?) investors buy the homes and rent them back to the folks that were living there. Economic Problem solved, the home (property) is under new management, and receipts are increasing as economy improves. The rising equity assessment of property portfolios then shows a recovery in full force. This is the best time to sell these investments to new investors; those holding pension, retirement and mutual funds for the people displaced by mortgage crisis, that those same people caused when they borrowed investor funds against rising equity assessment of their home as prices rose by speculation prices, before the bubble burst. We then become a nation of tenants, working to pay the rising rent. We no longer have to pay to maintain our own homes and yards, or play the role of property manager, save for home repairs, replace water heaters and keep the property at its peak value, so that the next buyer’s mortgage is as high as possible. Gone are the days when we have to accept a state lien against the property to pay for Grandma’s care at the Alzheimer Home and realize a loss after the home is finally sold.

Part B of the plan; after a few decades will swing back in the other direction, the slum lords will have to sell to the State, to bulldoze and level the tenements, and to then build individual homes, and rekindle the pride of home owner ship, and again transfer all the maintenance overhead back to the homeowner.

Massachusetts Governor's Council, the Governors Nanny State?

The State of Massachusetts has this extra body of government not found in other States, and is elected biannually, a Governor’s Council.

Historically this has tamed the excesses of the Executive branch, as we do see those abuses in the majority of other States.

The decisions are made collectively, as a seriously and severe conservative as Romney has promised, are in fact guided by this council that supervises the Governor. This also means that the Massachusetts Governor, of all the States Executives has the least power. This council structure could be considered for the Mitt Romney as President, electing a Presidential Council could keep the Governor on the straight and narrow.

When you consider effectiveness of government you have to consider that having 50 independent executives all producing 50 times as much effort, with 7,800 state legislators is better at screwing in a light bulb, or having one effective President to preside over obvious waste, fraud and abuse. Let’s give the people back their rights, and leave the states to turn the light on and off.

Can any/would any GOPer/tea bagger explain to me how you think any GOP person will win the oval office? Hey, I serious about this, please explain how the GOP will win. Now before you give your response to this question, there are a couple of things you really really need to realize.

The first is your WAR ON WOMEN. That's what it's called, and the GOP is all for it. Why can't women have birth control pills covered by insurance? Your Vigra pill is, my B/C pills aren't? You are against abortion, but fail to realize that birth control pills will prevent abortions. Are you really that stupid, or is it about complete control of women? Guess what GOP men, no person, no matter what party will win the oval office without the vote of the independent voter. Your stance on the birth control pill has cost you more votes than you can belive, all from the independent voters.

The second huge mistake the GOP/baggers made is supporting the Catholic Church on birth control pills/insurance. That is now called the WAR ON RELIGION. That is the GOP term you used.

Guess what, the Catholic Church has, and still is hiding/supporting child abusers, molestors, or what ever name they deserved to be called. And by joing forces, vocal expression, your party is painted as being in favor of protecting the abusers.

Hey, GOP, it not maybe fair, but you also have to realize a couple of other little things, the left side has read Karl Rove's book, and are now using those same tatic's against you. That really has to suck for the GOP.

And how many votes have you lost on supporting a church that protects and hides child molestors? Care to take a guess? And you GOPer's think you will win the oval office?

After what has just been explain, and you still think you will win, can I get a couple of your meds that you are taking. Who knows, I may need them sometime, so I can also have a funny dream.

So much for Mitt Romney´s leadership crap!

It doesn´t matter who wins the GOP nomination; in the final analysis, it will be won by a perfect nobody in the sense of not being able to govern this country, including, of course, Mitt Romney who has spent his life in the real economy and not in DCA. He probably wants to change Washington making it more corrupt and a “real life” city as his dubious accomplishments, to be president, attest to. He is already crippled and weakened physically and morally by his riches. He bears no similarity whatsoever to the average American and is therefore not likeable by a vast majority of the country.

This group of weirdo misfits called GOP presidential candidates, in reality, could not even shine Obama's shoes. They only involve themselves in petty personal politics.

Ron Paul should run as independent, even if he sits at the table, and outdistance himself from the dingbats.

However, so much for the GOP: They have a right to be in total chaos and fractured!

Romney with real world applications and leadership – less than 15% effective rate taxpayer, instead of 30%; off shores’ money manager man, Swiss banks and Cayman bank accounts, instead of putting the money in US banks; domestic job destroyer that buys companies for profit and then dissolves them, firing everyone in sight, instead of using his business background to turn around these companies´ economy and boost job creation; immigrant hater; not concerned about the poor, 47 million Americans; his economic plan is just a list of good intentions with no ideological base; and, too filthy rich to be president -- and Gingrich – a serial libertarian cheat, sex maniac at best, while pursuing dreams of living in a moon colony with his ladies; fined for tax evasion and writing fraudulent checks -- are fellows running for the presidency that really, in the final analysis, don´t respect anybody in the good old USA. People don´t matter to them, only money matters! They take orders from their churches (especially the Mormon slime machine), their financial backers, their women, and their money, and that´s all folks. They aren’t worth it!

Meanwhile, Santorum is an ex lobbyist that has made millions while in DCA, and many feel that the mafia would resuscitate if he made it to the White House. This guy is a suck-up who panders and postures to whomever he thinks will give him the vote. Another warmonger who just wants to defeat Obama -- never mind he has absolutely no plan or vision. Just more of the same -- more debt, cut domestic programs but NEVER the military. He knows where his bread is buttered. Cut military spending and you cut your own throat.

Finally, Ron Paul is too conservative, constitutionalist, and libertarian for anybody´s liking.

Clearly, the GOP has managed to set loose in the election scene of the country four stooges, and weirdo misfits, Banana republic style, that are not convenient for the presidency of the USA.

I myself would rather stick it out with Obama for the next four years. His management of the country´s economy makes him capable of carrying out another 4-year term in office with great success, nationally as well as internationally.

Yeah, like the Community Organizer in Chief has done anything positive for us? His inexperience has cost this country dearly. His foreign policy has made us the laughing stock of the world, emboldened our enemies, alienated our now former allies, and has risked the U.S. dollar's position as the world's preferred currency.

His domestic policy has divided the country and pretty much bankrupted us by over-spending and borrowing 40 cents of every dollar he spends. It took Republicans taking control of the House to start turning the economy around and start creating jobs again. It is their message of fiscal responsibility that has improved the confidence of employers to start hiring again.

Even now Obama doesn't get it. His newly proposed budget includes another trillion dollar deficit and bogus numbers and assumptions. How irresponsible can he be? Hasn't he buried us and several future generations in enough debt already? Why has he dramatically increased the size of government, adding over 200,000 government jobs, at a time we clearly can't afford it? Obama is leading us over the cliff.

The really irresponsible idiots are the teabagger repugs in Congress who have blocked or pushed the repeal of everything from budgets to workers rights to health care to free speech to voters rights to immigration reform to public school cirricula to environmental concerns to energy conservation to tax reform to the equal rights of all individuals to child labor laws to minimum wage laws to consumer protection to al list that goes on and on. Obama has got it, the yahoos on the other side are your clueless ones.

Well stated, sir. Thank you. This election year reminds me a lot of the 1992 campaign against Bill Clinton. Another Culture War where they end up alienating all major voting groups except older, white and financially comfortable. If not for low class, they would have no class at all.
