In 2005, Santorum made headlines — not all positive — for visiting the deathbed of Terri Schiavo, the woman at the center of a national right-to-die controversy. Philadelphia Daily News reporter John Baer later exposed that the real reason Santorum was in the Tampa, Fla., area was to collect money at a $250,000 fundraiser organized by executives of Outback Steakhouses, a company that shared Santorum's passion for a low minimum wage for waitresses and other rank-and-file workers. Santorum’s efforts were also aided by his unusual mode of travel: Wal-Mart's corporate jet. Santorum canceled a public meeting on Social Security reform "out of respect for the Schiavo family" even as the closed fundraisers for Santorum went on.

As it happens, in a book including a chapter on the Schiavo case from the perspective of the good people who worked at the Woodside Hospice and lived through the completely unnecessary political dog and pony show brought down on the place by opportunistic jerks like Rick Santorum. There was an elementary school down the block that had to be closed because of bomb threats. There was the hospice cook who got called a "Nazi" and a "murderer" on her way to work. There was the volunteer — a woman whom even both George H.W. Bush and his son, Jeb, had commended for her work at the hospice — who had to stop coming because of the “Sanctimonious Santorums” who had laid siege to the place. There was the brave and strong Annie Santa Maria, who had to try and keep that hospice running through all the foul madness that had been visited upon it and the people who do such great work there, every day, and who once was unable to break up a near fistfight between Santorum supporting priests in her lobby because she had to stay by a fax machine to wait for a Santorum inspired congressional subpoena for Terri Schiavo that was being faxed from Washington by opportunistic supporters of Rick Santorum. These people wanted Terri to testify, despite the fact that she pretty much had no brain left to speak of and no muscle functions.

The Schiavo case was a “Sanctimonious Santorum” moment, and the conservative movement in this country was revealed for the deceitful, arrogant, anti-humanity enterprise that it always has been. I don't even care that Santorum went down there on the Wal-Mart corporate jet to raise money from a bunch of steakhouse fatcats. I don't even care that, his involvement in the Schiavo circus may have been the first real factor contributing to his eventual loss to Bob Casey, Jr. in the Pennsylvania Senate race.

Now, though, Santorum claims that all he wanted was for judges to look at the case "fairly."

"What I cared about with Terri Schiavo was that a judge looked at the case fairly and they did. And they made their decision," Santorum said.

The senator is, unsurprisingly, as full of it. Back in 2006, he not only didn't care about what judges thought, he actively sought to use his office as senator to pressure them to abandon their fair reading of the case:

"For this judge in this district to ignore [the right to feeding tubes in the Schiavo case] is tantamount, I believe, to an offense that should be discussed in the Congress," Senator Rick Santorum, a Pennsylvania Republican, told Fox News Channel’s Sean Hannity in an interview Tuesday. "What we asked for in the Congress was a new finding of fact," Santorum said. "And this judge in this district ignored it, snubbed his nose at Congress, I think against the law. I think he should be held accountable for it."

Santorum also criticized Circuit Court Judge George Greer for ignoring subpoenas Congress issued seeking to question Terri, hardly more than a lump of breathing tissue, her estranged husband Michael, and hospice administrators.

The subpoenas were issued in an attempt to stall removing Terri’s feeding tube, but Greer overruled them and reissued his order authorizing Terri’s feeding tube removal.

Both Judge Greer and Judge Whittemore also were receiving death threats, and Whittemore was living under the protection of federal marshals for quite some time. This has escaped Santorum's memory.

Instead, Santorum exploited the Schiavo family's personal tragedy for his own political gain. This “good Catholic boy” committed an unforgivable mortal sin against charity. Santorum contributed to a disgusting public spectacle that made life difficult for some wonderful people doing great, impossible work, people whose boots Santorum is not worthy to even lick.

Good article in NYT the other day examining the ambivalence of MN Tea party advocates with safety net benefits they receive. Dependents (servants) eventually resent their Masters (even comfortable "House" slaves were ungrateful).

The point of the NYT article is that rural MN voters feel compromised for accepting needed government largess rather than turning it down, and blaming "Big Government" for forcing them into the Faustian Bargain.

The minimal number of voters involved with the Republican caucus/primaries is not indicative of the country as a whole. The ranting and hate mongering of the far right does not make me think that the Republican Party has the people that would do the best for our country if they were elected.

I think all the coverage of his little daughter, Bella, her illness and stay in the hospital helped him IMMENSELY a few weeks ago. I think he knows it, too.

I saw a new ad last night that he's putting out; and Bella was prominently featured in it. There's something about him using her like that which makes me more than a bit uncomfortable.

Now, I'm not saying he should hide her in the attic or something -- I just think perhaps one or two scenes of him with his entire family would have been more tasteful than using SEVERAL scenes of him with only Bella. It feels like he's using her to get votes.
