At CPAC, Jindal revives attack on Obama administration over oil spill recovery

J. Scott Applewhite / AP

Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana addresses activists from America's political right at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington on Saturday.

WASHINGTON – Speaking before an audience of Republican activists Saturday, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal blasted the Obama administration over its response to the 2010 BP oil spill in the gulf, saying Obama officials “wasted precious time while that oil was coming in to our coast.”

The remarks came at the conclusion of his speech at CPAC, the annual gathering of Republican activists held here in Washington.

“They wasted precious time while that oil was coming in to our coast,” Jindal said. “They refused to listen to the people who lived along the coast that knew better than all the experts.”

Jindal – whose state was hit hardest by the spill – was a central figure in the recovery effort.  His criticism, first expressed in his book, "Leadership and Crisis," represents a stinging rebuke of a Democratic administration with which he was partnered throughout the recovery effort.

“You’ve had a lot of speakers come up here and talk to you about the importance of this year’s election,” Jindal said, before adding that he wanted to offer “one more reason” why the election is important.

“What I saw and what I heard were people that were maybe very, very book smart, but had never run anything in the private sector,” Jindal continued.

“During our regular meetings and calls, the president would talk regularly about his “Nobel Prize-winning energy secretary.’  I’d begin to think that was part of his title,” Jindal said, refering to Energy Secretary Steven Chu.  “I didn’t understand what that had to do with stopping the oil from coming to our coast.”

(Chu won a Nobel Prize in 1997, for physics; Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009.)

Jindal’s attack represents another expression of a complaint about an elite or out-of-touch White House that has marked many of the CPAC speeches throughout the three days here.

Much of Jindal’s speech prior to the remarks concerned privatizing and reforming public education in Louisiana, an effort which he said would involve expanding charter schools and scholarships, and cracking down on underperforming teachers.

“For the ineffective teachers that refuse to get better, maybe they should look into another profession.  Maybe they don’t belong in the classroom anyway,” Jindal said.

Jindal knows jack about oil. The Koch Bros and BP were feeding him talking points to distract you, and for small thinkers, the berm was it. It had nothing to do with stopping the flow, Mission #1, and everything to get into a political disagreement with the President, who brought in everybody for ideas.

You forget who is looking out for you and who is bought and paid for, Jindal!

The entire educational system should be replaced with web based software that adjusts for the pace of the individual student.

Besides being better educationally, and more capable of improvements, it gets the students out of the institutions and the school buses. It was not possible when the current system was created, but now it is possible and its better and more affordable than the current system.

Had he thrown money at the oil disaster they'd be complaining that he wasted money because the oil companies couldn't stop the disaster or he was trying to take over the oil companies.

I live in Louisiana, and let me tell you, this is the worst governor I can ever remember. The only reason he made a second term is because no one with any recognition ran against him. He's a member of the right-wing extremist American Legislative Exchange Council [ALEC] and every decision he's made has been based on the ALEC Toolkit, which is thier 'playbook' to run/destroy state government. This guy is nothing but a useless little prick with high ambitions and no brains. This little punk is running Louisiana into the ground..and he actually thinks he has a chance on the national level. I'm confused here. The conservative republicans are criticizing Obama for not reacting fast enough to a spill. A spill that shouldn't have happened and could have been prevented, but wasn't because of a lack of regulations. The same lack of regulations that the republicans want, they don't want "big government" interfering in their business, but i guess don't mind getting money from big government when it suits them. Then in the same breath, they say "Drill baby drill"...what hypocrites...

Let's recall that Gov. Jindal was totally against any government regulations before he complained that the government didn't regulate enough. Let's recall that he whined about aploguzing to BP for daring to make them clean up their own mess.

Just like Gingrich--who shouted, screamed and turned blue about President Obama needing to bomb Libya to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians--and two weeks later shouting, screaming, and turning blue (though not for long enough, alas) BECAUSE President Obama bombed Libya to safeguard the lives of innocent civilians.

But, you have to realize, the Republicans have to contort themselves mightily and sometimes, outright lie, to make sure everyone knows that ANYTHING President Obama is wrong, even if it's something they already said they wanted.

As the quote goes, "Those who can do. Those who can't criticize those who can."

I guess if my last name was "Genital" I'd have anger issues, too,but I really wish he'd complete an anger management class before he opens his mouth again. If it bothers him that much that Mr. Obama is capable of becoming president and he's not, then he should go for it.

I remember that the President said that solving the oil spill problem was his number one concern and he said that he would not sleep until the whole mess was cleaned up. Of' course the President never looked like that he was loosing any sleep, contrary to the statements that he made. The President said that job creation was his number one prioriety and so far his efforts have been less than successful. Please forgive the President because he does not know what he is doing.

The oil spill, caused by private industry, was stopped and in case you haven't noticed, we are gaining jobs. I wonder why some people thought he had a magic wand to make things happen instantly. The people who voted for him (the actual majority of voters for the first time in a long time) knew that what he was confronting and what it was going to take to fix it was going to be a long term slog and not instant gratification. Conservatives were happy to give Bush/Cheney eight years to screw this up. Obama should have at least as much time to get us back on track.

Anyone can complain about anything, and that's exactly what the GOP is doing, except their vapid complaints are becoming less and less relevant to most Americans.

You raise a good point. Republicans have done nothing but cry wolf at the drop of every hat. Americans are smart enough to read the papers, do their own googling if you will and make their own judgments. That doesn't make this president without his own faults but he is far from the failure that Republicans want to gratuitously portray him as. The man is trying very hard to reverse the damage he was left with by their overzealous big government Republican. And in the absence of giving us someone who is less of a "failure" to consider, in the absence of demonstrating to the american public that they really have something to offer beyond vague promises and the same old policies that got us here, they may as well just stay home in November. Americans are smarter than that.

I'm sorry but Jindal is a southern sissy. Truly. Every time I hear the man open his mouth, I wonder who just slapped him. I find it hysterical that is he complaining about his state's rescuer given how much he continues to support his state's polluter.

Remember when Bush 2 was so highly criticized for Katrina and how long it took him to respond? It was probably because he was too book smart himself. I get such a kick out of the things these people say when all they have to do is look back a President and they will see plenty of mistakes. These presidents are not God. They are not going to do everything right. Not sure if people are aware of that.
