This is a joke, Obama doesn't have a budget. All Obama can do is spend money. The budget can only come from Congress and they haven't passed a budget for THREE years.

@Dennis - Looks like you are the one that will have to "get lost" as you are just plain wrong and uninformed. The President submits a budget proposal that says what he WANTS to spend (which is always off anyway). The Congressional Budget Office is the one responsible for the ACTUAL BUDGET.

Here's a little primer on the subject you seem to know so little about.

Here's a funny thing: Mitt Romney, the best chance Republicans have of winning the White House, is speaking in less than an hour in my neighborhood.

I just asked my Republican co-worker to walk over there to hear him and she wrinkled her nose and said "nah." I asked her if she wasn't supporting him. She said, oh, no, she supports him (not enough to go to a caucus, I might add.) She supports him because he's a businessman and not of Washington. She hates Washington insiders, she says.

Wow, fired up and ready to go? Not. Would you miss a chance to see a guy, in person, you think might be the next President?

Wonder if Congress will get around to passing the President's budget this year or if it will be another year of foot-dragging by the GOP who then blame President Obama for not having a budget! Oh, I see the misnamed Rational One has proved my point and already blamed President Obama.

I hear there's a big post-Super Bowl party at the DDI; time to head on over there. Have a good weekend.

You are the one that said "This is a joke, Obama doesn't have a budget."

Everyone knows that the budget is and must be initiated in the House but the President is still required to submit a budget and if you prefer a budget proposal … after all there is no "official" budget unless it is passed by both chambers.

Amy -

Now that I think about it, I've been to see three Republican Presidents - Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and Ronald Reagan - speak in person either before or after they were elected (I actually shook hands with Nixon!) - to only two Democrats, Bill Clinton and Barack Obama. Also saw George McGovern and Gary Hart when I had the chance. I've always been a Democrat, but I'm an American first and I love American history and to me it was a chance to see it up close and personal. I don't get your co-worker at all. Sounds more like "Tired Up and Ready to Snooze".....

Then again, I remember when my two Tea Party co-workers walked down to see McCain and Palin in 2008 and came back a half hour later because it was too crowded and too hot and they were too tired of standing around waiting. No hot coals for them!

@Dennis - Good to see that you've climbed off your high horse to recognize the point of my post. Obama is spending on average $2 TRILLION more per year than Bush's average. He has increased our national debt to $15.3 TRILLION and our debt to GDP 103%, which is in the same category as Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Ireland. Obama is out of control and we need an adult in the house.

Coming from a broad who has a larger Adam's Apple than my husband, this one is a real 'bigot' knee slapper!

Ann Coulter compared President Obama to rapper and reality star Flavor Flav at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference on Friday.

The inflammatory line was one of several Coulter sprinkled throughout her speech, a version of which she reliably gives at CPAC
every year. The 2012 edition of the address did not contain any outright shockers, such as when she called John Edwards a "faggot" in 2007. She did, however, stay current by making a very crude joke about Bill Clinton.

@Dennis - Nice comeback, LOL, you sure are full of them today. I notice that you didn't answer my question. What do you expect the Republicans in Congress to do? What would you like them to do? Yes, raise taxes, but that couldn't cover much of the $6Trillion spending that Obama is squandering. You want them to PASS a budget that has a $2Trillion deficit and give credibility to our adolescent president?

I'm not a Repub, but I am impressed that they stand their ground against this out-of-control spending...

Rational,

Even the Ryan budget adds another 6 trillion dollars to the National Debt.

I don’t want any unnecessary spending. I just don’t want to cut spending to the bone before our economic recovery is established and sustainable.

What I want the Republican House to do is generate a realistic budget, one that can get a vote and hopefully pass in the Senate. That is how Government should work – not like it did last year when the House passed a budget that had no chance in the Senate – what a waste of time, effort and emotions.

So what was the problem with the House budget?

What did the Senate object to?

What did they counter with?

What was the discussion, Dennis?

Isn't that the way "Government should work?"

bob-180,

The primary objection in the Senate was over the BBA requirement and the amount of spending cuts with no increases in revenue.

Because Government is not working like it should there was no discussion by either side. When there is no discussion there can be no resolution.

Both sides decided to punt, not just the Dems. They allowed decisions to be put on a Super Committee that was designed to fail. That is what our (yours and mine) Senate did to resolve the budget issues.

Umm, Bob. The Ryan budget would DESTROY Medicare. Do you really think that that is palatable and bi-partisan???? Do you really think that many elderly people (even conservative ones) would want to fend for themselves??? Granted, they wouldn't have to, but their grandchildren would. Why should I have to rely on the so-called "free market?" What is so bad about reforming entitlements instead of privatizing them??? That is not what America is about. We shouldn't cut and run from our problems when we have the chance to win. Is that what the Patriots did in the American Revolution??? Is that what the Yanks did in the Civil War??? Is that what our boys in Europe and the Pacific did in World War II?? Face it: the private sector doesn't always work. If it did, there wouldn't be a need for regulations or maybe even the government itself.

Oh and bob, if you think that Democrats would support privatizing Medicare, then you obviously do not know the Democratic ideology.

Dennis,

They way the Budget process works in congress is that the House and Senate Budget committees write a budget, then the House and Senate hold joint Budget committees reconciliation to settle any disagreements. The Budget is then voted on in the House and Senate. Each chamber can pass the budget on a majority vote. The Budget does not go to the President as it is now at bill and it can not be filibustered in the Senate. If the budget passes both chambers, then the House writes the appropriations bills (which are the real spending bills). The President can sign or veto the appropriations bills.

In the past 3 Budgets the Senate, under Harry Reid, has not even tried to write a budget as required, the House did pass a budget. The House did write and pass 7 or 8 appropriation bills (I believe the Senate passed one). That was the reason for the continuing resolutions. We can not continue running the Government with continuing resolutions.

Hope you have a good week end my friend.

Oh and Bob, you want a budget and a deficit reduction, and I have one of them. I ain't a budget-maker, but I can cut the deficit. Give it some time, and it will work.

I. Reduce the debt by $8 trillion over 10 years.

  • $750 billion in defense cuts: cut waste in private contracting; reduce investments in new military projects to more sustainable levels; reduce active military personnel by about 8%; demolish 200 bases to save over $55 billion a year; prioritize investments for drones, efficient weapon systems, and cyber-defense systems.
  • $1.25 trillion in entitlement savings: Raise payroll cap to 90% of income; reinstate COLA; reinstate estate taxes; raise premiums for beneficiaries who make over $250,000; progressive indexing.
  • Cut $1.5 trillion from discretionary spending except from NASA and Department of Education. Find ways to remove waste, trim costs, etc.
  • Save $2.8 trillion by repealing Bush tax cuts but retaining about $700 billion for the middle class.
  • Institute Buffet Rule and save $500 billion.
  • Reform tax code: decrease about 90% of all tax expenditures unless they are PROVEN to promote a significant amount of growth. Close loopholes, lower corporate tax rate to between 20-25%. Eliminate all corporate welfare. Approximate savings=$947 billion a year.
  • Reduce subsidies to oil companies, farmers, and ethanol producers by $100 billion.
  • Total savings=$15 trillion plus perhaps trillions more in interest.

I am not joking. Check (http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3472). Just removing 90% of our tax code's loopholes and tax expenditures would save $947 billion a year. Maybe we ought to do that and simply reform entitlements and we'd have practically no debt by about 2022.

II. Economic Recovery Package

  • Education reform. Increase funding for Department of Education, adopt RAND education policy and further Head Start programs.
  • Create Department of Tourism with $36 billion budget to support 150,000 employees to speed up process for foreign tourists to apply for visas to US and make system more efficient.
  • $90 billion in infrastructure bank to leverage capital for infrastructure repairs to employ millions of Americans.
  • Incorporate policies of Obama's Jobs Bill.
  • Offer incentives for businesses to buy US-made equipment and to employ people in America to the tune of perhaps $2,000-$3,000 per head; includes only people earning the median salary that the companies provides for its workers.
  • Increase duties and tariffs for Chinese goods to 35% until China appreciates its currency and lowers subsidies; place more cases on Chinese fraud and stealing,
  • $60 billion in incentives and federal loans and grants to green technology.
  • Regulatory overview to decrease unnecessary regulations for economy and add regulations were needed.
  • Reinstate Glass-Steagall.
  • Lift moratorium on offshore oil drilling and open up certain areas for energy exploration WITH safety and environmental precautions and insure safety.
  • Invest $40 billion in new R&D projects.
  • Offer more scholarships and Pell grants; prioritize scholarships to promote getting degrees in engineering, technology, etc.
  • Negotiate lower tuition deals with private institutions in return for aid and invest more money public higher education. Negotiate with states for a state education surtax to pay for public universities.
  • Help housing market: tighten regulations on housing and financial markets, reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; create partnership programs between the government and the private sector to buy houses and rent it out to former owners; persuade banks to write off parts of underwater mortgages; quicken time for foreclosures; demolish old buildings to open up to construction projects.
  • Increase federal gasoline tax to $.225/gallon and use extra revenues to revamp infrastructure.
  • Extend payroll tax cut.

Rational One

The Congressional Budget Office is the one responsible for the ACTUAL BUDGET.

Not Quite - Congress, not the CBO writes the Budget. House is the originator of all spending bills, which the Senate re-writes or adjusts, then they conference to agree on what is going to spend. Once they agree it goes to the President who usually signs off on the budget - vetoes on budget are more riskier, but actually more interesting to watch.

The CBO is supposed to be bi-partisan and does monitor the budget throughout the year. However, the most use of the CBO is providing estimated costs and effect of all proposals that representatives and senators submit to it for analysis.

The CBO is notoriously off, but usually because it can only score based on the information congress provides to it on the proposed bills - and usually not enough information is provided to make an accurate score.

DB Akron,

Actual, the Budget request is submitted by the President and sent to the congress. The House AND Senate both write their own budgets through their Budget committees. The House and Senate then have a joint conference to iron out differences. Once the Joint conference agrees the full House and Senate vote on the budget. It does not go to the President since it is not a law. The vote in both houses is by majority vote and the Budget can not be filibustered. The House then writes the appropriations bills and the Senate can agree or amend, after approval by both houses the appropriations bills goes to the President who can either sign them into law or veto.

Thanks to our wonderful hosts and my fellow posters on both sides of the aisle for
another week's worth of wit, wisdom, and often total absurdity on a week when I really needed politics as a distraction from real life. Like the song says, tonight's gonna be a good, good night at the old Dew Drop Inn:

In addition to the usual hijinks, tonight is the First Annual Mitt Romney Championship
Nail-Spitting Contest. Prizes will be awarded for distance, accuracy, and creativity in re-inventing your biography while spitting. First prize is two tickets to next year's CPAC, and of course - second prize is front row seats. Next up will be Karaoke Night, where prizes will be awarded to anyone who can sing "America The Beautiful" without sounding like.....like.....wait, I've got it - like a puppy that was just strangled by President Obama on national tv. In other words, everyone not named Wilard wins.

So let's get this party started! I've already taken care of the first set of songs on
the jukebox. First song goes out to Mitt Romney: Bobby Darin's "If I Were a Carpenter". Then in honor of Rick Santorum's life spent toiling in the vineyards, we've got UB40's "Red, Red Wine", Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood's "Summer Wine", Neil Diamond's "Cracklin' Rosie" and of course for our favorite Redneck, Dean Martin's "Little Old Wine Drinker Me". I see we've got a special request sent in from someone named Newt Gingrich for Tim McGraw's "Please Remember Me". And then for yours truly, the Fifth Dimension's "Last Night I Didn't Get To Sleep At All". To my fellow treehousemates, thanks as always for all your support!

Okay, I can't resist - before she met my brother, my soon-to-be ex-sister-in-law's biological clock was ticking, so she had my nephew courtesy of a sperm bank, which she tried explaining to him at an early age so he wouldn't be surprised later in life. So the first time I met them, he proudly told me that "I don't have a Daddy - I had a sperm doughnut!"

What about 2012. The senate has yet to pass a budget for 2012. The President has promised that the 2012 federal deficit will not exceed 229.27 billion dollars. I wan to know the President is going to keep his promise to the American people regarding this year's budget.

He did, but Congress said no (and by that I mean BOTH parties). And technically neither chamber has had the guts to compromise on making a good budget. Republicans are steadfast against raising taxes and want to severely cut spending, and Democrats won't agree to more cuts unless the GOP compromise on tax increases. I blame the GOP 55%, the Democrats about 25%, and the American people 20% for electing such right-wing idiots to office (sorry America).

But the president made his promise to the American people without any conditions what so ever. Keeping his promise is not suppose to depend on any act or action of congress. Besides, President Obama was going to fix any problem between the two parties by "reaching across the isle".

Obama's budget proposal contains a $1.33 TRILLION dollar deficit. Considering his aptitude at arithmetic, add another 25%.

Of course, we will get all the excuses in the world about why another trillion plus defict is not his fault- nothing is ever Obama's fault. It seems that his idolaters have no idea that, when all is said and done, their excuse making just leads people to the natural conclusion that he is simply incompetent to do the job.

Which, I must say, he is.

Let's have a little gander at his understanding of the Constitution, shall we? Just after a stinging rebuke in the form of a nine to nothing decision from the SCOTUS that he had no business interfering with religion- Obama decided to interfere with religion. Valerie Jarrett told him he should. Kathleen Sibelius concurred.

When it became clear that he had ANOTHER First Amendment loser on his hands, he decided that he knew how to fix the problem.

Unfortunately, the "fix" puts him in violation of the Fourth Amendment. That's the one that says the government cannot "take" your property without compensation. Ordering insurance companies to provide a service for free violates that.

Has this guy ever read the constitution? Does he have the vaguest understanding of the meaning? Or does he simply not believe any of it applies to him?

I realize that the cult members on this site have no problem with anything he says or does- no matter that the position they defend one day is in direct opposition to the position he takes the next. Witness the response to the PAC turnabout.

The rest of us are another story. . .

Interesting take you have on the 4th Amendment. I'm sure all the insurance companies who have been regulated for years and the types of coverage they must provide mandated by government are kicking themselves for not thinking up that argument. Geesh.

What's funny, no jo, is that last year, my Republican co-worker was complaining to me about Planned Parenthood. I asked her what the problem was. She was mad because they wouldn't renew her birth control pills, without a yearly check up. Seems they have some kind of policy, you have to see a doctor every year, to make sure your health hasn't changed, instead of automatically renewing the prescription. She was outraged, what a waste of her time!

I asked her why she wasn't just going to her doctor, instead of using Planned Parenthood. Get this, because our health insurance doesn't cover birth control.

I swear, Republicans are completely out of touch with the ordinary experiences of real Americans. If my co-worker ever stops to think, she is going to realize the Obama administration is just trying to make birth control more available to women, such as herself....and lower the number of abortions and unplanned pregnacies in this country! Sort of what you'd think Catholic priests would favor.

Will, you have to admit that Obama can do very little unless he has the support of Congress. Without Congress' support, the president is virtually powerless. I believe he was naive when he made the promise, for then he probably thought that either the Democrats will control both chambers OR that the GOP would be willing to compromise in order to get things done. Unfortunately, he was wrong on both assumptions. The Democrats lost the House and had huge losses in the Senate after 2010. And the GOP, emboldened by their victory and controlled by their anti-Obama overlords in the Tea Party, boldly rejected everything that Obama proposed, from balanced debt reduction proposals to budgets to even job creating bills. All they did was obstruct and obstruct and formulate bills that would do squat to help the economy. They didn't even compromise on the debt crisis, got 98% of what they wanted (not a compromise), and cost us our AAA credit rating. Not to say that Obama and the Democrats are completely faultless, but at least they had the guts to compromise for the interests of the American people.

Nojo, once again you have your facts wrong. The US Embassy was not closed by the Bush administration and reopened by the Obama administration. In 2005, following the Hariri assasination, the American ambassador was recalled as a protest against Syrian policies towards Lebanon.

The embassy was never closed at this time. In 2006 there was an attack on the embassy, but again it was not closed.

In 2010, President Obama, appointed a new Ambassador, Robert Ford, as there had been some signs that there was hope for better relations.

At no time up until these past few weeks has the the US Embassy in Damascus been closed and now it is along with the embassies of our allies, including Britain and France. This as the result of the actions of the Assad regime against its own citizens.

There is a huge difference between withdrawing an ambassador and closing an embassy...learn the difference.

Stop trying to smear the President of the United States, Barack Hussein Obama, with lies and half truths.

For the record we have had diplomatic relations with Syria or its territories since 1835.

Hmmm..... when any other President in history has opened or re-opened an embassy in another country, it's been - as Steeler Fan indicated - to make an effort to establish or re-establish a basis for diplomatic communication and a basis for finding some way of easing hostilities and trying to work together for our mutual benefit. But when President Obama does it, it's just one more example of "his belief in his ability to charm the entire world". Amazing......

There was a report on NPR the other day about the US Ambassador and how he was getting death threats because he was talking to the opposition folks and speaking out to the press.

They reported that the embassy personal were being called home.

        Ideology,

This reminds me of the little notice I remember reading in the paper about Canada closing their embassy in Iran. At the time, I thought that was weird. It was long after the Iranians took over our embassy. Little did we know until everyone was safely home that Canada was giving refuge to Americans during that time.

Canada is a fine neighbor !

We had a surplus (true or untrue) in 2001, but the GOP (led by the Idiot in Chief) spent like crazy, putting two wars, a tax cut, AND a Medicare Plan on America's credit card. Republicans are a bunch of spending idiots. At least the Democrats offered a balance plan to close the budget gap; your idiots on the right said no just because it wasn't 100% conservative. In the President's state of the union speech he mentioned the idea of starting to pay down the debt. That is a good idea. To do that the federal government has to first balance the budget and then start running a surplus on a regular basis. But the White House has been predicting deficits for as many years as they are willing to predict. I want the President to explain how and when the budget will be balanced. I want the President to explain what it is going to take, how long it is going to take, and how much it is going to end up costing the tax payers to pay back all of the money that the federal government has and is continuing to borrow. Remember, the longer the federal government is in debt, the more money the tax payers are going to pay to service the debt.

He said that it was gonna take compromise and balanced proposals to fix the problem. He didn't say how long, but I think he (and the American people) now that it is going to be a long time before the budget is balanced. He even tried to cut the debt by $4 trillion over the next decade (not a bad start), but the GOP said no.
