McDonnell warms up CPAC crowd for Romney

Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, one of Mitt Romney's highest-value backers, juiced up the CPAC crowd early Friday in advance of the GOP frontrunner's speech to the group, lauding Romney as a "responsible" and "consistent" conservative.

"I believe he's the results-oriented conservative," McDonnell said to some applause in the ballroom, which was filling to the gills largely in anticipation of the next speaker, Rick Santorum.

"He's the guy, whether it's been as governor of Massachusetts, as head of a large private sector company, in turning around the Olympics, he's the results-oriented, can-do, consistent conservative," McDonnell said of Romney.

Listing his candidate's job-creation record, McDonnell added, "That's, to me, the kind of can-do responsible conservative leadership that we need for the United States of America."

McDonnell's direct reference to his endorsee contrasted with yesterday's omission by former presidential candidates Herman Cain and Rick Perry -- both  of whom neglected to mention their support for Newt Gingrich in their addresses to the crowd.

The popular Virginia governor, who is widely discussed as a vice presidential pick, also offered details about his biography, including his 21 years in the United States Army.

And in a shot at Rick Santorum, he spoke emotionally about his daughter, an Army platoon leader who McDonnell said would call him from Iraq with tales of being under fire from the enemy.

"Yes I did get a little bit emotional. But she didn't," he said. "She got the job done."

He largely veered away from social issues but slammed the president for failing to balance the budget.

"I say Mr. President, take responsibility. You're the commander in chief, get the job done, quit making excuses, let's turn this country around," he said.

He also offered shoutouts to a list of fellow Republican governors who enjoy popularity in among conservative voters despite flagging overall approval ratings, including Govs. Scott Walker and Rick Scott.

Romney is only a can-do candidate if he spends alot of money on ads.

NEW YORK — Mitt Romney is in danger of losing his fourth straight state in Saturday’s caucuses in Maine, where he and his allies have been all but absent from TV.

That’s no coincidence.

Over the past month, he has won in states where he and an allied super PAC, called Restore Our Future, have pounded his rivals with millions of dollars in negative ads. But he has tended to lose big when he has stopped using his power to crush other contenders by spending a ton of money — particularly on TV.

Rob, if you are talking about Romney, his approval rating with this crowd is far from high.

'Ken Doll' McDonnell who is term limited, has his eye on the VP slot, will have to do a super duper job.

Looks like the girly men of the GOP Clown Car are ready to make their appearance at C-CRAP: Riddle me this connies: Are you ready for higher gas prices this summer when the Iranian debacle (read that Obama conspiracy to start a war to win an election) begins. Just askin!

It doesn't matter what we do - someone can "break wind" in the Middle East and gas prices will go up

The traders are in the pits in NY and Chicago chomping at the bit to bid up Gas futures, the wholesalers raise gas prices at the drop of a hat and the retailers jump right in.

Iran is "rattling it sword" to boost income - I can't believe that they are stupid enough to start a "shooting" war with the US or god forbid - Israel

Someone needs to tell Iran that Israel has hundreds of nuclear weapons - which work - and the means to deliver them. Can you say "nuclear parking lot" .

I've yet to hear Mr. Obama talk about a "war" - I believe that noise is coming from the GOP - which loves to start unfunded wars!

Did McDonnell give a "shout out" to our own Governor LePage, who is trying to cut 65,000 sick, elderly, low income people in Maine from Medicaid? Our "responsible" governor, who cut taxes for the wealthiest, and now claims we have a shortfall that can only be fixed by denying people who make less than $10,800 a year healthcare?

The moonbats took time from defending the Obama total flipflop on contraceptives to diss Gov McDonnell...this is a sign of their respect for the best Governor in America.

My small contribution has been to help liberals realize that McDonnell is their worst nightmare. Successful, conservative, articulate, massively popular!

Soon to be VICE PRESIDENT , Governor Bob McDonnell.

What's changed? Will women who work for Catholic organizations get free contraceptives or not? It's a matter of semantics as the cost will be folded into health insurance costs no matter how the bill is worded. It just gives the church plausible deniability.

It's called compromise. A win-win for both sides.

Why would I waste my money? Won't they be getting millions from their new super PAC? Also, they keep boasting that they have 1.3m contributes of which 80% contribute $50 or less. A more relevant statistic would be what percentage of the total amount contributed comes from donations of $50 or less. I would suspect less than 10% with 90% of the actual money coming from the big boys.
