First, there were Freedom Fries.
So, of course, it makes sense that someone somewhere would try this – renaming the “Gulf of Mexico,” what else – the “Gulf of America.”
That’s exactly what Mississippi state Rep. D. Stephen Holland, a Democrat, is proposing.
According to a bill he introduced in the Mississippi Legislature, as of July 1, 2012, H.B. 150 is an act to provide that for all official purposes within the state of Mississippi, the body of water located directly South of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the ‘Gulf of America’; and for related purposes.” (Here’s the pdf of the bill.)
The bill is now before the Marine Resources Committee and is expected to get a hearing. It was referred to the committee Tuesday.
Holland’s office could not be reached for comment.
Holland, a former aide to late-Rep. Jamie Whitten (D) and Sen. Thad Cochran (R), appears to be a brash, blunt pol. (See videos here and here.)
The news was first reported by the BestofNewOrleans.com website.

Was he wrapped in a flag & banging a Bible when he came up with this cockamamie idea?
Ans, YES, I realize he's a Democrat!
Can we please stop trying to out patriotic each other?
Probably he was, Feisty. Unbelievable!
"We have met the enemy and he is us!" Pogo by Walt Kelly
Oh my gosh. And let me guess, the next bill was called "Let's rename Mississippi as the Great Mississippi Home of American Patriots Act."
Got to go - have to get to the only airport named after two presidents and a country... Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Probably had John Philip Souza music in the background. Democrat or republican, with all the problems to be solved this is what they call working for the people.
Paul M, good one.
Holland should have more important things to do.....
The 9th largest body of water needs a name change? Why?..If so, why not change it to 'Lower/Southern Atlantic Ocean' since it's considered a part (somehow) of the Atlantic Ocean.
Golfo de Mexico!
Gulf of America? Talk about stuck on stupid! Forget that! Let's call it the Gulf of Colbert!
Wayne -
As so often seems to be the case, Stephen Colbert was way ahead of everyone else on this one:
http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/311930/june-07-2010/sign-off---gulf-of-america-fund
What did they do run out of Post Offices? What about the jobs?
Rep. Holland, taken aback by the firestorm of criticism reportedly said....
Yes! Let's take back something for what the illegals steal from us every day. Besides we have far more coast line around the Gulf then they do.
Otherwise, this is probably a big waste of Mississippi tax payer dollars and time.
Call it the "gulf of American exceptionalism"......... (rolls eyes)
Why stop there? We can re-name the Atlantic and the Pacific the Eastern American Ocean and the Western American Ocean.
...sheesh...
Paul M - what country exactly was the airport named after?
Oh good grief! What stupidity and what a waste of legislative time.
And I thought our state legislators were a waste of air. I don't feel so bad now.
Of course around here we say "Thank God for Mississippi and Arkansas" if it weren't for them Oklahoma would dead last on every list.
Which is sad, except for the State Legislature and tornadoes Oklahoma is pretty nice place to live.
Fiesty: I told you to tighten up your tinfoil hat.... these turds are just looking for a platform to stand on.... Mexico is just an easy target to prop their collective worthless selves on.
OMG, did we run out of Post Offices to rename?
Why not Gulf of Obama?
Why not the "Gulf between most Conservative's Ears" ?
Glad he is focusing on this instead of trying to improve the 10.4% unemployment rate in the state.
Noooooo...Please tell me the "Freedom Fries" aren't back. And this guy's a Democrat? Maybe he's trying to resurrect the "DixieCrats"...
In the words of Bugs Bunny. R-Toontown. What a maroon, what a maroon!
Cygnus_X-1 - how do we have more coastline then Mexico? Mexico has 1,760 miles of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico. The US has only 1,631 so I'm not sure what math you're using there. This of course doesn't even take into account the other countries that have coastline on the gulf. *sigh* the state of geographic education never ceases to amaze me.
Either way this is truly an asinine idea from an idiot who clearly has nothing better to do with his time. I wasn't aware that they'd solved all their problems there in Mississippi that there would be so much free time for their politicians to come up with crap like this.
So it is just a guess but is the Marine Services committee just board.....stupid idea and certainly a tremendous waste of any resources.
About as much sense as Argentina wanting their little Malvinas back.
Why not? The Romans called the Mediterranean Sea "Mare Nostrum" or "OUR Sea." When you are the biggest and badest on the block you might as well let everyone know.
"If you're going to be one, be a Big Red One."
Sorry, Mississippi Dimwit but the Spanish got the right to name the body of water which they did around 1540 calling it Golfo de México or Seno Mexicano.
Christ ! What a Mississippi moron.
.
Yeah, the name usually goes to the discoverer or at times the conqueror. Question I have is "what difference does it make?"
Plotinus....
My guess....Rep Holland probably already owns stock in a Map printing company and well is looking for the loophole around that whole new insider trading legislation. Turning a dog stock into a good stock.
Right. Let's put all that budget-balancing nonsense on the back burner while we play games with monikers.
Yeah yeah whatever. With all the important things that need to be addressed energy was put into this yet families that were displaced by Katrina still have no homes.
THIS is what these idiots think is IMPORTANT???? Instead of wasting time with this kind of nonsense, why isn't this politician busy working with his collegues finding a solution to his and or other states' problems??? Let's see, if memory serves me correctly, virtually every state in the union has problems with their budgets, tax rates, unemployment, education, abandoned/foreclosed homes, civil services, need I go on?
DUDE--PAY ATTENTION TO THE REAL ISSUES AND STOP WASTING TIME AND TAXPAYER DOLLARS ON THIS NONSENSE. IS THIS SIMPLE ENOUGH FOR YOU TO UNDERSTAND?
In as much as big oil killed the Gulf, name it the Dead Sea
Don't understand what all the hoopla is about. Mexicans/Hispanics will be the largest plurality race in America in the next two generations. They want to take back the entire Southwest that they feel was stolen from them (they actually lost a WAR to us over it, but whatever).
Your tax dollars hard at work...
Refereed to committee hopefully to die there.
I presume he is trying to create jobs. If we name it then we will probably be responsible for cleaning and maintaining so we can waste more of our tax dollars on government jobs. And now you know how the government is creating jobs.
Let's see, Mississippi wants to call it the "Gulf of America" well it is surround by America on almost 90% (North America and Central America).
But, then Texas will want to name it the "Gulf of Alamo"
And Florida has more shoreline then any other state, so I guess they'll want to rename it the "Gulf of Old Age"
Geografer, you may want to do research or look at a map before making know it all judgements. The gulf does not include "many" more Countries. The US, Mexico and the most Northwestern coast of Cuba shares the gulf. The gulf does not include Central and South American Countries. The Gulf on the Mexican side ends at about Cancun before it becomes the Caribbean via the Yucatan Channel. The US has the majority of the coast line with approximately 1680 miles. Mexico has approximately 1390 miles and Cuba approximately 150 miles.
As you said in your own words "*sigh* the state of geographic education never ceases to amaze me."
Liberals are cannibalistic, they even eat there own when they don't agree with there views.
There is only one obvious name if it is to be re-named at all..The Gulf of BP
Well, while we're acting real stupid and ignorant, let's rename all the oceans, gulfs, sounds, bays, lakes and rivers some American Patriotic and arrogant names! Since the Gulf of Mexico was nominated to be renamed the Gulf Of America by an idiot politician from Mississippi, I suggest that we rename the Mississippi River the Lyndon B. Johnson River. Or the Washington Ocean on our East Coast and The Reagan Ocean on our West Coast. The Great Lakes could be named Constitution Lakes. You get the stupid idea? WTF! I say again, for emphasis, WTF! Really goofy. Speaking of Goofy, how about Lake Goofy in Florida instead of Lake Okeechobee. Disney World would like that and it's a hell of a lot easier to spell!
I thought the name was changed years ago? I thought it was the golf of BP dont they own it now? or was it CP they have their signs all over it.
And this is EXACTLY why the house has a 10% approval rating. How stupid can you get?
I wonder why Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippine Islands, Malaysia, Vietnam, etc. all contest territorial claims to the South China Sea?
Clearly it all belongs to China! It's in the name, no?
So, of course, it makes sense that someone somewhere would try this – renaming the “Gulf of Mexico,” what else – the “Gulf of America.”
That’s exactly what Mississippi state Rep. D. Stephen Holland, a Democrat, is proposing.
I am sure he had this asinine idea while he was swimming in his swimming pool totally drunk!
lahater- Some people think there is a black and white rainbow in the sky and no matter what rational people say they are colorblind. At least until a black man becomes president. You should go back to your fox page now ya fartknuckle...
When we annex Mexico, re-name it Gulf of North America since the USA and Mexico are both in North America.
Oh for the love of.... So much for American exceptionalism....
Let's just spare Mexico all the paperwork and just give them the one digit salute. If America is trying to piss them off than that ought do it...
Feisty, what the heck do they HAVE in the Water in Mississippi, stupid serum? Good grief what a maroon. Proposals like his make one just shake their head in wonder.
We have to ensure that Mexican water molecules don't come here to take jobs that could be done by American water molecules.
Also, let's rename the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans as the Eastern American Ocean and the Western American Ocean. But why stop there? The Indian Ocean should be the 'American Ocean That Is Nowhere Near America'.
lahater, liberals are intelligent enough to call it and disagree with a bad idea when it comes from "one of their own" as you say. Conservatives line up with the BS their side spews whether it makes sense (rarely) or not or whether they agree or not. I think I'd rather stand with the "cannibals" on this point.
Cynic,
LMFAO - clean up on Feisty's monitor! ;o)))
Since Mississippi is a RED state, even local Democrats go brain dead. Just goes to prove that stupidity rubs off.
Lahater- By that, you mean, when one of "our own" comes up with a lousy idea we say so, instead of gathering around and slapping the idiot on the back, shouting, "Hell yeah!" like a bunch of good ol' boys? In this case, yes. If only such a thing happened more often, on both sides of the aisle, our country would be a better place.
Also, a few words for you. There, their, and they're- all different! The one you were searching for was their. Your choice, there, makes your sentence almost unreadable.
OMG. Hello, people, it was a JOKE!
He was trying to make a point about the multitude of immigration bills that Mississippi has been introducing.
You mean that this is worth a comment?
Sounds like a publicity stunt, albeit a stupid one, and if it is - it is working.
Gulf of America? Is that politically correct? If it is, then it offends me. If the name is going to be changed, then shouldn't it be "The Gulf of the America's?" Why change it at all? I know, how about "The Gulf of Sunshine?" That would be politically correct.
I thought the "Gulf of America" was the polarization of politics in this country.
why not do it the chicago way? sell the nameing rights.
Oh good grief, just when you think they can't get any wackier, they do. Reminds me of "freedom fries".
Why can't these clowns tend to business that matters. Or just stop doing anything, for that matter.
If you didn't call 'em freedom fries in those days, you were labeled as unpatriotic.
Yup Jodie, it appears the idiosyncrasy of conservatism can be catchy, and this is one democrat that caught a bad case of it - reminds of the rights desire to rename the Slave Trade Route to the Pathway to Opportunity Route (was really the Atlantic Triangular Trade Route).
RedDevPS....wow...you do get that the Republican party (or the right) was the abolitionists push of the Civil War.....Why not take a second stab at a good ol Conservative dig?
Does that just count for the section south of Mississippi? What about the section east of Texas or west of Florida?
lonereb....I suppose that he just didn't think it through.
I think it should go out to the highest bidder!
Perhaps the Gulf of China.
Wow--how insightful and original of the good State Congressman. Let's call something by another name so that we can be more politically correct . . . genius.
Perhaps instead of bidding it off we consider a charitable deduction....The Gulf of Greece........that might just fit the bill for sandtrich as well #1.32
I still just call the "fries" and always will!
These guys have way more important things to get done. just more wasted time and money!
Any idiot that does something like this should be kicked out of office ASAP!
Thank you @ txmom32, they (liberals) control Govt and this is the GARBAGE he spends his time thinking about? Well at least they are there in body...Obama could always appoint new positions and state they were not there in mind -- who would argue with him. " the lunatics are running the insane asylum."
It's not enough that this continent is called North America and the continent below us is South America?
beanathome,
Explain too me how this makes it more politically correct?
Gulf of America? Really? Is this the type of thing that keeps him awake at night? Not the rising deficit, not the umemployment rate, not the economy - the fact that it's called the Gulf of Mexico. Un f'ing real.
Could we just leave the geography map alone? Great thing to be pondering over public rep. Good grief.
It looks phoney, probably a political BS planted fake. AND its only some nut in Mississipppi so who cares even if it is real.
This sort of crap doesn't even deserve to be referred to a committee, which suggests that somehow it might conceivably be found to have merit. If this is what they are going to consider, why not just pass the budget (balanced), adjourn, GO HOME, and explain why in the world any of them should even be considered for re-election!
How about BP Lagoon instead?
^ rotfl!
Txmom 32: the party of the name Republican was there alright, but it bears no resemblance to the Republican party of today. Today, the Republicans would be all over slaves for being illegal aliens.
@txmom32 Hey, here's a thought: why don't you do your research before you slander RedDevPS. The Republican party has NOT always been a right-wing party. Are you really that ignorant that you don't realize ending the slave trade and abolition of slavery was an extremely liberal ideal in that time. In fact, the Republican Party was liberal from it's formation until FDR's presidency in which he caused a party flip. Thus, Democrats became the liberal party, and the Republicans became the conservative counterpart. Basically, you're insulting of R.D.PS just made you, in fact, look like the idiot.
Ignorance drives me up a wall.
Just one question, why is it some people think collapsing whole threads is a good idea?
That being said, there is only one obvious name if it is to be re-named at all..The Gulf of BP
Fils-de-Artemis and rednawt -
The Mexican Gov't did spill the most oil in the history of the Gulf. People forget the largest spill in the Gulf, Ixtoc in 1979.
If you read the articles closely, they always say the largest spill in "US history", not the largest spill in the Gulf, or the western hemisphere.
Of course, the media didn't want to kill the hype. They really didn't want people to look at the facts that just 2 years after Ixtoc, the numerous scientists who went to study the spill could find no measurable impacts to wildlife.
Sorta like what we are finding in the Gulf with the BP spill. There is no more vigorously tested food on the planet than Gulf Seafood - and it is testing negative for petroleum toxins. Of course, you can just trust those Chinese shrimp. No need to test anything coming from China for toxins...
Oh, and Mexico used Corexit as the dispersant, just like BP.
It's still The Gulf of Mexico. Without the Yucatan part of Mexico, it would all be the Caribbean.
Amen. This used to be a Republican disease, butr apparently it's contagious.
After we change the name of the Gulf of Mexico, can we change the name of Mississippi? 'Cause I have a few suggestions....
As to the party of Lincoln, the modern GOP no longer deserves the title.
"Conservatism" does NOT mean fear and hatred directed against African Americans, Latinos, Muslims, immigrants, gays, teachers (of all people to vilify!), etc., etc.
"Conservatism" does NOT mean cutting taxes for the rich while raising government spending with new, bloated federal bureaucracies, unfunded wars, unfunded prescription medicine give aways (basically welfare for pharmaceutical companies), and an abandonment of 'pay as you go' principles.
"Conservatism" does not mean abandoning 100 years of jurisprudence to legislate from the bench and eliminate controls on unbridled attempts to 'buy elections'.
"Conservatism" does not mean adding layer upon layer of red tape and making processes inefficient to punish people who don't vote 'correctly'.
"Conservatism" does not mean allowing politicians to rewrite textbooks and fill them full of crap.
Good Lord People....You realize the North Won so it is in very poor form for the Democrats to try to rewrite history now....
The Republican Party was never really the Party of Lincoln...rather Lincoln was a Whig who need the abolitionists vote to become President so he joined and ran through the Republican Party...yes it is absolutely the same Republican Party we have now. It was the Democrats that implemented the Jim Crow Laws. It was the Democrats who chose to obstruct integration in the 1950's and those same Democrats who felt if they brought blacks into their party they could be controlled.
Another interesting tidbit...The Republican Party was not directly behind women's suffrage...Rather preferring to put their efforts toward suffrage for Black Males first.
Apparently...drinking Democrats were not in favor of Women receiving the Right to vote as they thought women might use that opportunity to vote for Prohibition....thus the term Drunken Liberal.
They were called "Dixiecrats" and they all joined the Republican Party after President Johnson strong-armed passage of the Civil Rights Act. Hence Richard Nixon's successful "solid South" strategy after 100 years of unliateral Democratic power across the former Confederacy.
This isn't 1863, and it isn't 1963 either.
Modern GOP politicans run on an implied platform of ethnic hostility. Sometimes the targets are African Americans. Sometimes they are Latinos. Sometimes they are Muslims.
But always, these days, there is a THEY.
We really need to start random drug testing for all elected officials. The real hair follicle test not the less precise urine test. How about doing the actual job you were elected to?
Matty88...and the rest of you who "object" to historical fact
Why would you think that abolitionism was anything resembling liberal let alone "extremely liberal"? It was ideology supported by the Bible, I suppose if you consider the Roman times or even Egyptians and Jews it could be consider radical or new age...The Republican Party were people of faith who were following religious text to support the idea that slavery is a very wrong practice.....Ya remember the scene in the 10 commandments where Moses asked the Pharaoh to let his people go?
If you are going to measure Conservatism by the Bible then you really can't cherry pick the anti-slavery ideology out of it.
What an utter idiot. Like the world would pay any attention to that. Kinda like the NFL and MBL champs calling themselves "World Champions." Uhhh, not!
"Ethnic Hostility"?...well if that isn't the invention of the modern Progressive double speak I just don't know what is....
Txmom is just gleefully gloating because it is her state school board that recommended renaming the Slave Trade Route.
http://blog.sfgate.com/ybenjamin/2010/05/21/texas-approves-renaming-slave-trade-as-atlantic-triangular-trade/
My favorite line from the article:
Now that is just full out b.s. The bible has references to slavery, and doesn't really condemn it .. sometimes is supports slavery. Otherwise, why this scripture:
Or why this:
http://atheism.about.com/library/weekly/aa112598.htm
I do not think calling the Congressman a liberal is fair. He is obviously not a liberal. This is not a liberal vs conservative issue at all. Those of you who consider all democrats as liberals are just as ignorant and Demos who think that all Republicans are Conservative. Its not a fair assessment.
Still, you have to suspect the intellect of anyone so ignorant of history, and those of the people who elected him. Still, he may have been the lesser of two evils. Its not like there is much difference between republicans and democrats. When elected, they both lie, cheat and steal. Power corrupts, and absolute power corrupts absolutely.
Still, if I were a constituent I would be embarrassed. Why do political decision makers even run yokels like this?
He had the idea of naming it Gulf Of America when he was swimming drunk in his jacuzzi. That is the only explanation. Let's ask the MEXICANS how much they love the idea, shall we?
I am sure they are going to be thrilled!
Along the area He's talking about He should call it "the sea of Sewage". These people are elected, paid money, and haven't a gwaddamn thing to do. Looks like we could put them on some sort of public works detail.
Txmom32, you are really not understanding what I'm saying. The Republican Party in its originality was the liberal American party. And you just proved my point by bringing up the fact they passed the Jim Crow Laws. That was an incredibly conservative move on their part. Jim Crow--->Reconstruction--->1865-'77---Pre-1933, aka, before the party flip. I told you, when FDR took the presidency, he caused a reversal of the [major] political parties. Albeit it was fiscally, they flipped ideologies less than two decades later during the Civil Rights Era. Look it up. Don't argue this with a history major who's emphasis is on American History. Democrats---> Liberal; Republicans---> Conservative. ANY historian will tell you this. You ever wonder why so many of them refer to the parties as "modern" Democrats and Republicans.
Second, what I was pointing out had absolutely 0% to do with religion and how a party affiliates itself with such. Furthermore, I don't know where every conservative in this country has gotten the ideal that liberal instantly equals sacrilegious. I know many, many liberals and Democratic people who are some of the most devout persons I've ever met. In fact, they usually follow the Bible then just about every conservative alive today. While it's true most atheists are liberal, not all liberals are atheist. It does not work that way, ma'am.
Matty 88--is that YOU MattyinCincinnati?
If so, long time! Happy New Year!
Its to bad they can not figure why MS gets 2.2 dollars for each dollar they pay in income tax. MS is # 49 on the welfare State list. They only seem to want some government out of their lives. this is not a very good example of a Conservative Red State.
Interesting to note that the liberals accuse the conservatives of raising taxes and increasing spending, but ask a liberal to cut spending for any program that involves possible votes, in other words the overbloated entitlement programs that reward laziness instead of protecting those with genuine illness, senior citizens, etc....do you realize that in our modern America, and anchor baby is not solely the province of illegal aliens, but rather a way to insure that a parent doesn't have to exert themselves in order to have food to eat, medical care, housing.....American citizens have learned to use anchor babies and the proof is generational proverty, the fact that those living in poverty often do not move out of poverty despite all the funding for enrichment and assistance. Could it be that moving up requires real effort? Kind of like going through the processof citizenship requires effort? So, it would seem that the liberals are all about American without effort.
RedDevPS.....Gosh couldn't support your first statement so you meander off to the blogs for something else? No points for effort or misdirect, I will give you 100 pts for finding some propoganda to pass of as scandalous.
The Atlantic Triangular Trade has been taught in US History for decades. It is simply a term that describe the trading process used between England (manufactured goods and services), Africa (slaves) and the West Indies (Rum, Sugar cain)....Do they really not teach about trade and commerce from a historical point of view where you are from? Or are you just that gullible to believe everything you read through Progressive Media? Yes Texas schools do teach about the economic aspect of Atlantic Triangular Trade as do University Programs and just about anyone who wishes to present history warts and all.
Interesting reading...from Virgina Center for Digital History
http://www.vcdh.virginia.edu/solguide/VUS03/essay03.html
Yes, Yes, Yes we all take the writings from modern day Atheists or the GLBT newsletter as gospel...oops sorry biblical reference....certainly the Atheists would never take quotes out of context or use extreme views to get a point across?
Ummmm... Where are the jobs?
Why are guys blaming republicans? This turkey is a dem.
I have never seen as much name calling as in this thread. What is the matter ? No dates for Valentine's ?
maddy88....
First of all your statement is absolutely wrong...
They were not liberal they were hard core constitutionalists.
I Stated..
So are you a bit confused....to clairify during reconstruction and after the Southern States held elections for public office it was the Democrats who initiated Jim Crow Laws in the south--separate but equal---laws. eventually laws of similar tone were enacted in Norther States. Where these laws may have met some standards for Constitutionalists they did not always offer "equal" protections. From a historical perspective we can consider "Separate but Equal" a failed experiment. I truly don't know how you classify that as Conservative or Liberal in ideology by contemporary standards.
I think errors in your post makes it apparent that your perspective is suspect as you seem to think that the Republicans were the driving force in Jim Crow Laws...You should probably Look it up.
Here is the Republican Platform when they formed in 1856
http://www.ushistory.org/gop/convention_1856republicanplatform.htm
You might find it very interesting...Do you disagree that this manifesto just screams constitutionalists or are you still seeing these folks as "liberal"?
Freedom Fries I still laugh about that, like France really cared what we called our fries. We just stopped travelling there, but then again we were warned as Texans not to. Like it was our fault George Bush got elected *rolls eyes*
Ah yes, "Freedom Fries" because folks were upset with France. Of course, France had nothing to do with french (lower case "f") fries; french frying is more commonly known as deep fat frying.
And I have to agree with other posters, it's nice to know Mississippi has solved all it's other problems (unemployment, illiteracy, poverty, etc.) and can worry about renaming the Gulf of Mexico. I'd actually suggest something along the lines of "Bay of Oil Drilling Rigs" when one considers the tremendous number of oil rigs in the GOM.
Satire is totally wasted on the masses.
Of course it should only be committed by the professionals and not politicians. But I give this guy credit for trying to make a point.
txmom32, will you PLEASE read what I have been saying. I DID NOT say the Republicans passed the Jim Crow Laws. I said yes, it was the Democrats, because they were the conservative party of America up until the 1930s. Jim Crow was a hell of a long time before the 1930s, so all you keep doing is backing up the fact that the Democrats that were the conservative body. "Democrats---> Liberal; Republicans---> Conservative," was meant to show you what happened to the party after FDRs presidency. Now wouldn't that be stupid of me to go into the major party flip then say they've always been the same? Really? Use some common sense. You obviously still have yet to look the Party Shift up, or you wouldn't be continuing to spout out ignorant statements. This isn't some piece of history that I'm embellishing, or that is left to interpretation. It's fact. Everyone political scientist and historian knows it happened, I don't know why you continue to argue it. Republicans used to be liberal. I'm sorry you don't want to accept that.
Don't go off being a smart ass. I've read the platform a few times. Did you not read: History Major with an emphasis on American History? Obviously it's not the same as today's liberals. Just like today's conservatives are not the same as they were 150 years ago. It all depends on the period of time, but until the 1930s, whether you want to accept it or not, your Grand Old Party was the liberal body of the United States.
@ sbm1920 - The scary thing is I don't think he is trying to be satirical (or snarky), I have a brother that lives in Arkansas and there are some really rabid "patriots" in the south that would rally around a proposal like this; make any sort of comment that they consider "unamerican" and you get the cold shoulder forever. (My witchy S-I-L hasn't spoken to me for over 15 years, I don't even remember what I said to set her off. I wish I did, my nephews would pay me to know.)
I'm sure there are people who would support such a thing. But this guy has said he was trying to make a point. It was a joke.
That's Mississippi for you - always working so hard to maintain its ranking as the biggest retard in the litter of states :D
Matty88...are you certain about that degree you hold? It seems that you not only lack in knowledge of American History but you reading and comprehension skills are well missing. Has anyone ever suggested that you attempt to communicate without using middle school locker room language?
Now please read what you wrote....It simply makes no sense....
You keep saying the same thing and if you repeat it enough you might just believe it but, you have offered nothing other than, "You should believe me because I am a History Major". That may work in Progressive circles but in the real world you really should back up your supposition with some tangible source.
Let's see if I can take a stab at this....I'm a Veterinarian you should let me neuter your cat.
Matty88, don't even bother arguing with txmom, she thinks she's an expert on everything!
No she doesn't yellow, but when she's right, she's right.
I actually agree with her on occasion - not on this thread though - the problem is that she treats everyone like they're idiots if they have a different opinion. She is an insufferable, condescending, little miss know-it-all with a desperate need to feel superior. Not a very Christian attitude in my opinion.
Oh and apparently if you had a negative experience with Christianity, then the only explanation according to her is that you must have grown up in one of those sects where they bite the heads of snakes! She is good for a laugh though, I'll give her that, LOL!!!!!
But Maddy88....This isn't about an Opinion...you and I have been discussing the "History of Political Parties" in the United States. A subject that has been documented through time. You have not pointed to any reference to support your premise. Your argument rested only on the fact that we should believe you because you were a History Major....Not very academic of you, now is that?
Txmom, what are YOUR sources? You can't fault someone else when you don't list your own references. Try not to use Wikipedia this time, OK.?
Historically, the Republicans were the "Left" party. Note that, as the other night in the State of the Union, they are to the Speaker's left (which is where the designations came from when the Jacobins took their seats to the Speaker's left in the French National Assembly during the French Revolution). Once this was established, it has not been changed by the parties' subsequent role reversal.
Yellow....I have listed my sources...read above.
Rlquall....again with it was the French who had influence on American pomp and circumstance.....
Please cite your source....because your theory is one of many...
I tend to go with the historical evidence from an earlier time...we have always been influenced by religion so it makes sense that the terminology goes back the the Reformation time...
http://history-world.org/reformation_and_counter_reformat.htm
From Paragraph 4 of the article
Paragraph 5 from the article
From Paragraph 13 of the article
Here is another excellent resource that is a bit more pedestrian in explanation.
http://www.democracyweb.org/multiparty/history.php
There is far too much information from this article that is valuable to cut and paste individual passages.
As for a political flip....I disagree...there has been one major factor that has changed hands between the parties and that is the ideal of Federalism...where a strong central government seems to be an ideology that was historically conservative .... States rights was historically liberal. This was apparent with Lincolns decision to change from Whig to Republican Party and assumed many "Federal" privileges to punish the South States. When FDR implemented the new deal the alteration of ideology was solidified and Federal power rose through his New Deal.
Of course as we know many of his initial New Deal programs were deemed unconstitutional. So he began to fiddle with America's court system as well.
So glad that our Congress is attending to such important matters!
Actually, it's not our Congress, it's the Mississippi state legislature.
But given where the state of Mississippi tends to perenially rank in terms of economy and education and health, etc., you would still think they had more important things to worry about.
Obviously these people we send to state legislatures and Congress don't have a clear idea why they are sent to represent us and have too much time on their hands to present sane and workable legislation. Vote them out!!!!
Well, I guess it's confession time.
Yes, I was born and raised in Natchez, Ms. and everything you've heard about Ms. is true.
It was fun growing up along side the Mississippi River though.
Maybe Holland can next focus on renaming the Mississippi River.......... "Americas River".
Independent, reading comprehension, buddy. It's their state legislature, not Congress.
So why don't we call it the Minnesota river since thst's where it starts?
Isn't thinking required to be a politician?
Before you jump on Congress please note that the representative that proposed this bill is a Mississippi STATE representative (not a US representative)
We already have a Minnesota River, thanks.
Geez, since they gave us Obama, I would have thought that the Illinois voters weren't too quick on the uptake but even they should know the difference between a state legislature and the United States Congress.
Wasn't a Member; a state senator from Mississippi.
Agreed that this is stupid, but Mississippis GDP per capita is equal that of Spain's so it isn't like its really all that bad there when compared to the rest of the world rather than just the US.
How about "sanctions by Obama" That's a good name.
Gulf of NOMOREBAMA.
Not since 1998. In fact it's usually frowned on these days.
Where have YOU been?
Isn't Michigan going to concede to Obama for all the FED donations toward their prosperous recovery....Lake Michigan becomes Lake Obama.
His first recommendation was the "Gulf of Holland", but everybody said, "Man, that's in Michigan!"
Dazed and Amazed-1,
"Isn't thinking required to be a politician?"
No, Thinking is not involved, only pandering to the least common denominator of society and especially the high-end campaign contributors.
How about The Gulf Between Mr. Holland's Ears?"
That would be the Pacific Ocean, the largest water body on Earth.
lonereb, I believe it's called the "Mississippi" because at the time of the first explorers checking out the new continent traveled by boat. The mouth of this mighty river was encountered first and more repeatedly than its headwaters. Besides, boat travelers couldn't get to the Mississippi's headwaters since there's waterfalls near present-day Minneapolis.
Lest people start feeling smugly about lowly Mississippi and considering it misguided and backwards.....it doesn't hold the distinction of being the last in terms of financial growth, nor does it rank last in attraction of business or maintaining business....Surprise....I believe that Illinois has dropped to 48th or 49th in those categories and I also believe that Michigan-beleaguered car industry and steel manufacturing industries-has moved up ahead of Illinois in the rankings.....I don't think it is wise to mock Mississippi.
Some people, just like throughout history, desire that our little planet be under the control of one world power/leader and of course the only qualified country would be the USA.
They want to control the world but then say - DO NOT interfere with our 50 states – you know, states’ rights.
The guy could be on to something. But why stop there ? Grand Canyon could be renamed Patriot Pit. The Rockies the Tea Party Tetons. Death Valley could be" Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death Valley".Guantonomo could be called " I'm sho' You Don't want no Mo,''. The High Sierras could be called " The Hang em High Sierras". In honor of Clint Eastwood. Feel free with any other suggestions.
Man, this screws up my old Rand/McNally!
Great point, this would cost tons of money to update maps, school books and GIS databases everywhere. Completely idiotic proposal....
But, good for the economy! Think of all the reprints of books, maps, etc. Oh, and software people updating GPS! LOL
Sounds like Mississippi needs to be towed out into the Gulf and sunk.
Maybe not the state, but possibly the representative! (Seniors/retirees like to go gamble in Gulfport)
Shaking My head:
..."Since they gave us Obama"....
"THEY" gave you a President put us back on a path to recovery from the disaster that YOU gave US.
Have a nice day :)
Excuse me, I am confused. What does your statement about my Rand/McNally mean?
(And, thank you for wishing me a nice day. I hope yours is going well, also)
It would create jobs...someone has to change all those maps and signs....What you call "water ready" jobs....
I'm way too cheap to buy a new one phine I'll just cross it out with a pen and rename it myself ;)
Hi btw! *waves* haven't seen you in a few days hope all is well!
I think shut yer yap meant for that to go in the post above yours.
lmao wb52 too funny!
He can call it whatever he likes but the Mississippi coast got messed up a long time ago when Camile landed in the 60's, the have not had decent beach water since. this is quite silly, guess we may as well refer to it as the northwestern caribbean?
Why is the South always trying to "Uber" Americanize everything? Texas is even trying to rewrite and White wash history books to fit their narrow, bigoted vision of how the country should be.
Silly, silly country this is..
@shut yer yap: Take heed of your namessake and (you know the rest!)
Truthman:
Take heed of your namesake and tell some.
Oh, and have a nice day :)
Only the Texas School Board.
They grudgingly decided to leave Thomas Jefferson IN, and forego memorization of Jefferson Davis's insipid inaugural address as 'president' of the Confederate States.
Seems somebody decided to print the Articles of Seccession, and the School Board was forced to admit the REAL reason the secessionists voted to commit treason (against the sage advice of Sam Houston and others).
gulf of americans r idiots
How about The Gulf of Walmart?
Ha! That's brilliant Shut then Walmart can "adopt" it (you know like adopt a highway?) and they can do the upkeep and stuff.
They renamed 6th ave in Manhattan "Avenue of the Americas" many years ago, and it's on the street signs, but when you take a taxi, folks still say;
"Take me to 55th and 6th"...
Wait a second. As much as I like Rodney Dangerfield - in NY the numbered streets cross each other?
WTF???
55th and 6th, vs 6th and 55th being a totally different place? How confusing can you get?
Most places use words or letters in on direction and numbers in the other.
Then it matters not which order you put them in. 55th and Capital is the same as Capital and 55th.
Normally I would say something snarky about NY, Liberals or Yankees - but since you have Rodney as your symbol, I'll move along.
Ryan, the numbered streets run in one direction and the numbered avenues run in the opposite direction. It's really not that confusing, most of us outside of Texas have already figured it out.
I love New York, but the address thing is messed up.
Typically, in other cities, if your address is 55/something..Let's say, 5501 N. 1st ave, you're located on 55st. Not in New York, though. The numbers on your address don't mean diddly. 5501 could be on 29th street for you know - and nowhere NEAR the beginning of the block. It makes me crazy.
The guy said : "55th and 6th".
So tell me how on earth you are suppossed to know which one is an avenue, and which one is a street?
Perhaps if he had said "55th Street and 6th Avenue" that would be different. But you can see his post doesn't say that.
At minimum, it's not a very creative system. Numbers and numbers, even people on Newsvine don't just use numbers. Kinda boring.
How about the Gulf of MississiBP?
Well in the sticks they may use letters LOL. But city people know the difference between a Street, Blvd, Road, Ave, Ct, etc; LOL. And as far as yanks go atleast they don't claim to be Huge patriotic people then employ a bunch of illegals. And oh yeah your in Texas moron your not a Rebel nor concidered from "The South" your in the South West. So why are you calling them Yankees? Have you ever watched the game show that repos cars? Ever wonder why they are in Texas all the time? Well here's your clue: What state has the Stupidest people in the country? And before you even think of bringing the Bushs into this. Do your research Prescot Bush helped the Nazis and Barbra Bushs father is Alister Crowley. And liberals are just flat out Communist. Also if you really think that there is any difference between a Republican or a Democratic agenda then your a fool. To pick one side or the other just because of party is Idiotic no one person or party has all the right answers all the time. So keep watching for A, B, and C St. they are on your left hand side. I hope you still have L and R on your shoe so you know which way to look.
Good idea. Let's rename the street in front of the Mississippi legislature "Avenue of the Idiots".
Oh, sorry. That would be in Alabama.
Commonsense, you don't make much sense.
Well look at that I just got a new brain wrinkle I never even paid attention until you mentioned it, thanks Ryan!
What the hell Mike?? Ryan was just making an observation, so you turned it into a rant against our state? You do realize our state is huge and has lots of cities right? We're not all "in the sticks"
Also Mike you do realize "Texas" didn't elect Bush right? I promise we were not the only state who voted in those elections, heck I live in Texas and I didn't vote for him either time, ever think maybe WE tried to warn the rest of y'all just like we did with Perry?
If you really want to be confused, in DC you can't just say 12th & G Streets, you need to designate which quadrant you want - NW, NE or SE, SW (it's north or south side of the city first and then the east or west quadrant). And then there's "I Street" which also has "Eye Street" on some buildings . . .
Good Lord ScorpionsFan how do y'all ever get anywhere??? I think I'll just stay home ;)
Whenever I see someone that looks really confused I offer to help them find what/where they're looking for; most of the time it's tourist or people that don't work in DC. It is very confusing until you learn it.
Commonsense...I thought that made sense...I live in Alabama..lol.
Well if I ever decide to go to DC ScorpionsFan I'm lookin YOU up ;)
Why not the "Oily Gulf of BP"?
Also, Pluto is still a planet.
The damned Plutoists are what is really ruining this country. Why doesn't Rep. Holland demand a resolution condemning them?
One of the main purposes of state legislatures is to make Congress look slightly better by comparison.
How about renaming the Atlantic and Pacific oceans to America ocean and the Other America ocean. How about renaming Canada to North North America. Great Britain could be Little America.
Sound ludicrous? So does Gulf of America.
I think we may be getting a little like Saudi Arabia who renamed the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Gulf.
Mrs. Ramboet, you must be a highly educated women!
Stephen Holland - !? the land of Gouda and euthanasia .... Mr. Holland first and foremost needs to change his name -- to Mr. Stephen America.
POST OF THE DAY! And maybe the year, or decade. ROTFLMAO!!!
Now THAT was funny!!!
Then we can rename Mississippi "My Brother Larry" and Alabama "My Other Brother Larry".
Problem is, "America" is from "Americus Vespucci."
Not even "American."
The whole thing is dopey.
No, those guys are in Vermont.
Oh, wait..wrong sitcom. Sorry.
Common...lol.
Perhaps Mexico agrees. Oil rigs and the BP pollution are nothing to be proud of and don't attract tourists. The Gulf of British Petroleum would be an appropriate name, and not an embarrassment to the United States.
Republicans are still apologizing for the U.S. to BP for getting their oil all wet.
Did anyone notice in those the gulf is fine BP ads they failed to mention 600 miles of the gulf coast in the US? I wonder why.
I was getting gas at a B.P. station the other day.
Damned if there weren't democrats pumping B.P.
gas also. Don't let the brainwashing wash you out
into the gulf, silly !!!
Make a deal with Mexico. They take back all of their illegals and we will allow them to continue to call it the Gulf of Mexico. If not, then it becomes the Gulf of the Mississsippi.
Better yet, let's keep the immigrants from Mexico (and elsewhere) and send them all of our ignorant bigots. Id' make that trade in a heartbeat, and it would be GOOD for America!
Miris.
You have GOT to teach me that bold print thingy..
Shel Rama.
If this country got rid of it's "illegals" we'd have no more YOU.
That's a good thing.
Mr Holland seems to think that calling it the Gulf of Mexico is being soft on immigration - as opposed to naming it after the country that forms it's western border.
Does he think that buying Girl Scout cookies is a nod to cannibalism? (Thank you Addams Family)
There ought to be some sort of committee that could vett possible legislation that is goofy and just plain dumb before wasting tax payers $$'s on such idiocy.
That's what they're doing, and even that is a waste. It's like a court clerk accepting a suit against the estate of Osama bin Laden for one octillion dollars for causing pain and suffering, which shouldn't even be filed, just thrown back. (Hope I didn't give any ambulance chasers an idea.)
what a waste of time....damn polititions
It's "politicians" not "politions".
VERY important work being done here.
pppppfffffffhhhhhhhtttt.
Which America? North America? South America? Central America? Oh, that's right, you ass-u-me there's only one, the United States of America. How myopic of you.
Actually, there is ONLY one United states of America... what rock did you crawl out of? Your comment made no sense whatsoever. You had it right saying the first part of your comment, until you muffed it up saying:
"Oh, that's right, you ass-u-me there's only one, the United States of America. How myopic of you."
Quit while you are ahead.. and go back to school and learn geography for two more years. That is my advice to you, dman1115. Apparently, you may have missed that class during your high school years. 'sigh' And some people think they are brilliant saying things they think are funny when they are acting like little children who do not know better. Make sure you dot your I's and cross your T's too when you learn that Alaska is actually bigger than Texas, too. 'shakes his head at you'
Scyber.
Maybe you learn to read for comprehension?
What "dman" implied was that people act as if The United States is the only America. Spot on.
The United States of America wasn't even a country when the region was named. The hemishpere wasn't named after the U.S of A.
You should be a little embarrassed, now.
Go ahead, blush. We'll turn our heads..
Have a nice day.
Scyber. It appears to me that you don't understand what a comma means, dmman1115 was commenting on which of the Americas were being refered to in this article. You might do well to brush up on your geography, as there is Central, South, North and of course The United States of AMERICA!!!
I think the more inportant thing to pay attention to is not someone's strength or weakness in ANY area, but pay attention to the stupidity and waste that goes on in our government, both at the state and federal levels.
proving my point again,Miris....the geography DOESN'T MATTER the grammer DOESN'T MATTER.....THE ABSOLUTE STUPIDITY OF THEY ENTIRE GOVERNMENT, STATE AND FEDERAL, DOES MATTER. Focus on the point!!!
Please read carefully before you respond--comprehension is important, Scyber.
Unless you translate the term "United States" into Spanish.
Then you also have los "Estados Unidos" Mexicanos, which is also in America.
Too literal? Sorry, couldn't resist.
Besides, Mr. Stephen 'Freedom Fries' didn't suggest changing the name to the "Gulf of the United States of America", so I'm not sure what your point was in the first place, scyber.
Europeans roll their eyes when people say they're "American" or "from the US" and just ass-u-me that they mean USA. As stated above, are you from North, South or Central America and from the United States of America or United States of Mexico? Oh, that's right, only folks from the USA can say they're "American" or "from the US," all the the others have to differentiate b/c after all EVERYONE knows who the most important country (and people) in the world is (are).
And hey dman, LOVE the hyphens; I just wish I'd thought of it! :O)
When I was a child, I learned about South America, Central America, and North America in geography classes. As I grew older, I learned that people in the United States called themselves “Americans” and "Americans" called the country "America." As the years passed, I concluded that the my country was an arrogant, self-absorbed nation with no respect for its neighbors in the Americas.
I was also taught about the Monroe Doctrine, expressed in 1823, which held that "efforts by European nations to colonize land or interfere with states in North or South America would be viewed as acts of aggression requiring U.S. intervention." Wikipedia "Monroe Doctrine." But taking on names that negated the existence of some 20-25 countries seemed to be one of the most condescending things I'd ever heard. Those living in Central or South America have always had as much right to call themselves Americans as those living in the United States. Ditto with our North American neighbors, Canada and Mexico.
Our condescending attitude has been only exacerbated over time to become "American exceptionalism." "Although the term does not necessarily imply superiority, many neoconservative and American conservative writers have promoted its use in that sense.[1][5] To them, the United States is like the biblical "shining city on a hill," and exempt from historical forces that have affected other countries." Ibid. We all know President Reagan coined the phrase "shining city on a hill." Of course, the Uber right labels dissent from American exceptionalism as a lack of patriotism, but our shameless grandiosity is rightly subject to criticism by other countries. To many folks in the rest of the world, the United States is all about the United States and Americans are poorly educated narcissists, arrogantly insisting that their lifestyle, their tastes, and their products are the best in the world, and other nations should envy and mimic what they do. Ugly Americans indeed.
In my mind, the question presented is: Who anointed the United States with the power to change geographic names that have existed for centuries? Those who may be called on to vote for adoption of this proposal should reject it as an ugly manifestation of national solipsism.
Ronald Reagan coined "shining city on a hill"? There's some revisionist history! Even he would readily admit that he (his writers) borrowed it from Gov. Bradford of Plymouth colony, who called for his domain becoming that only a few years after the arrival of the Pilgrims in North America.
I don't know, I like it! Some of you people are just way too serious. We all need to lighten up a little.
Is there any way that this is somehow meant to be tounge-in-cheek? Since Mr. Holland was previously a staffer for two different members of Congress (of opposite parties, no less) one would assume (perhaps wrongly) that he is at least literate to be aware of the term "tounge-in-cheek" and possibly even capable of attempting to engage in something of the sort. If he's serious, and the voters of his district re-elect him anyway, they prove that Hamilton was probably right about democracy.
Maybe the Democrats have their hands in the pockets of those companies that`d have to change maps, school books etc. Maybe thats why they were so into the Vietnam War. Big map change there!
well hmm.. you seem to be the only one that likes this idea... but hey the politicians only need your 1 vote to overthrow the majority opposing votes to make it happen so.. know yourself out.
(literally)
I think that's fine. Mexico, Canada, the US, Brazil....they are all part of the America's
Do we have nothing better to do with our time? Please. I don't care if you're a Republican, Democrat or Independent--we need real people to do real work in this country. Renaming a body of water isn't on the list as "work."
Game playing like this does nothing but make the USA a laughingstock in the world. Please, legislators, grow up and get to work. We have important issues that need unclouded thought. Renaming a historical body of water just isn't on the list of "important."
The local politicians in Oklahoma City tried that too, they renamed the part of the Canadian River that runs through the city limits "Oklahoma River"..........nobody uses that name, we still just call it "the Canadian" as it has been for as long as I can find maps . Stupid waste of time and energy.
The difference being that none of the river in question actually flows anywhere near Canada, whereas this body of water really has a long shorline with Mexico. But the point is well taken. If changed, no one will call it by that "new" name. If you ask people in Nashville where Rosa A. Parks Ave. is, you'll mostly get a blank stare. If you ask them were 8th Ave. North is, you'll probably get useful directions.
Even if the idiotic proposal were to be successful doesn't mean it will get called by that name. In Toledo, Ohio if you ask someone where the Martin Luther King Bridge or the Martin Luther King Railroad Station is you'll get a blank look, but if you say the Cherry Street Bridge (Cherry Street runs over the bridge) or Union Station they'll know exactly where you're talking about. Well, OK, most likely with the railroad station they'll know where you're talking about b/c there's only one and most of the people I know refer to it as either the train station or the Amtrak station.
That's all we need. Another slap in the tax payers face.
How about spending our tax dollars for something worth while. You politicians were not given office to go on a spending spree for a bunch of dumb crap!
If it ain't broke, don't fix it. I can live with calling the Gulf of Mexico what I always have. I sure as hell don't want to spend any tax money to change it.
Not to be outdone...legislation is now pending in Austin to rename it the Gulf of Texas.
Both Florida and Texas have longer gulf coastlines than Ms.
I've got it!!!!!!!!!!!!!! North Caribbean Sea. Next??
Wow....this guy should be recalled (if Mississippi has recall provisions), I'm pretty sure every State has better things to do, that renaming bodies of water to sound more patriotic. Glad I don't live there, but I also feel bad for citizens who have to deal with that guy.
A recall for a state rep (most serve only two-year terms, but as it's four in Ala., I'm not sure about Miss.) would be even a bigger waste of tax dollars than this is. The solution isn't recalls, it's to stop electing (and especially re-electing) idiots.
Here's another solution stop giving them 100% pay and Benifits for the rest of their pathetic lives when men and woman who serve and fight for our country for 20 years only get 50%.
@Rlquall: Not sure I agree with that, I think having someone in office who's supposed to actually be doing productive things for the State, jerking around and wasting taxpayer money is the bigger waste. Who knows how much longer this moron has in office. Though, I don't live in Mississippi so it's really not up to me.
Let the body of water remain named as it has been.
What a terrific use of tax payer money!! Finally a politician with a brain to know how best to spend our money and the peoples time!!! Where have you been all my life Stephen Holland?!!
What a freak’n boob!!! This is why other countries feel we are arrogant, selfish and out of touch!!! Thanks Stephen for keeping that image alive and well and thanks to the hicks that put you in office!!
What a waste of time and money.
Well Lisa it is not there money but ours, they do not have time for important things.
Exactly. Isn't Mississippi #50 in education and #1 in welfare. Seems to me they've got bigger problems.
Yes, but compared to Mexico, Mississippi is like Connecticut:)
Ral: If you want to do a fact finding mission to compare Bridgeport to Ocotlan, Mexico to Jackson, Mississippi, I'm pretty sure you'll find my Connecticut city in third place...
