Gulf of Mexico? Try 'Gulf of America'

First, there were Freedom Fries.

So, of course, it makes sense that someone somewhere would try this – renaming the “Gulf of Mexico,” what else – the “Gulf of America.”

That’s exactly what Mississippi state Rep. D. Stephen Holland, a Democrat, is proposing.

According to a bill he introduced in the Mississippi Legislature, as of July 1, 2012, H.B. 150 is an act to provide that for all official purposes within the state of Mississippi, the body of water located directly South of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the ‘Gulf of America’; and for related purposes.” (Here’s the pdf of the bill.)

The bill is now before the Marine Resources Committee and is expected to get a hearing. It was referred to the committee Tuesday.

Holland’s office could not be reached for comment.

Holland, a former aide to late-Rep. Jamie Whitten (D) and Sen. Thad Cochran (R), appears to be a brash, blunt pol. (See videos here and here.)

Or maybe they could work on that important stuff the media keeps asking them about, ya know the jobs and stuff? Yea know when we will finally leave Afghanistan? Just a thought.

      Reply#55 - Thu Feb 9, 2012 4:58 PM EST

This is his jobs plan. First you have a long term job for the committee that has to decide where the gulf of America ends and the gulf of Mexico begins since the rest of the bordering states and Mexico aren't renaming their parts. Then all the cartographers in the world have to make new maps of the region. Which will then have to be bought by all the schools in the world. And kids who are incapable of finding it now will have to find two parts of it. See many more people working.

        #55.1 - Thu Feb 9, 2012 5:29 PM EST

You mean that the reason we're still in Afghanistan is that the Mississippi legislature has not voted for us to pull out yet?

Wow, you're even smarter than Mr. Holland, Red dead.

This is on the same level as renaming Squaw Peak 'Native American Woman Mountain' or whatever they changed the name to. Most places were named for a reason, not to be derogatory. Really, the only people to see 'racism' in these names are racist themselves. As far as the Gulf of Mexico goes, it's as much theirs as ours, let it be.

Guess that explains why so many places in the rural South were named N***er Den Creek, N***er Hollow, N***er Ridge, etc., eh?

The Democrat house majority leader, Holland's mentor, retired last year and for the first time since Reconstruction the MS House is controlled by the Republicians. All this must have caused Democrat Representative Holland to go off his nut. :)

Can't we focus on more important things and shouldn't it be "Gulf of the Americas"?

Mississippi has the second sallest Gulf shoreline out of all the states! If anything Louisiana should invade Mississippi and take that shoreline for their own. Then Mississippi can shut up.

                Go rename your river, dummies!

As King Missile once said, "America is named after a guy who was never even here but put his name on it, because he could...because we're jerks!"

It was named by the first guy that made the map after the guy who didn't know where he was going and didn't know where he was when he got there and did it with borrowed money told him about it. He like any good businessman named it after himself.

Anyone that is always trying to be patriotic is trying to distract stupid people from other, more important things. Like what is really going on in America. You want real patriotism, then lets start taking back America, as we are now owned by Saudi Arabia and China. ALWAYS be suspicious of someone that throws the patriotic card. That's how Hitler took power. If you where against Hitler you where anti-German. So everyone didn't want to be labeled anti-German, so he took over.

They should be focusing more attention on the fact that we owe so much money we'll have to sell the country just to pay the debts, not stupid crap like this.

If politicians have so little to do that they need to start renaming things, perhaps they aren't really needed at all.

Only in America !!!, only in America, America is a country, because in the rest of the countries America is a continent and this country is known as The United States of America.

So regardless of how the Mexicans would feel about such change, the gulf then would be named after the entire continent......
