First, there were Freedom Fries.
So, of course, it makes sense that someone somewhere would try this – renaming the “Gulf of Mexico,” what else – the “Gulf of America.”
That’s exactly what Mississippi state Rep. D. Stephen Holland, a Democrat, is proposing.
According to a bill he introduced in the Mississippi Legislature, as of July 1, 2012, H.B. 150 is an act to provide that for all official purposes within the state of Mississippi, the body of water located directly South of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties shall be known as the ‘Gulf of America’; and for related purposes.” (Here’s the pdf of the bill.)
The bill is now before the Marine Resources Committee and is expected to get a hearing. It was referred to the committee Tuesday.
Holland’s office could not be reached for comment.
Holland, a former aide to late-Rep. Jamie Whitten (D) and Sen. Thad Cochran (R), appears to be a brash, blunt pol. (See videos here and here.)

From the land of "Let's free the murderers", another great idea!
Rename it and take it. Draw new lines from Arizona to the sea.......we own it. Now lets take it.
I'd like to see it changed to the Gulf of Bush the Lesser.
Just when both the Federal and pretty much every State government is trying to cut wastefull and outright stupid expenditures of tax funds, some idiot 'Rep. of Somewhere' comes up with another way to waste multiple thousands of taxpayers funds, as well as taking away hundreds of hours of time from other Legislative pursuits ( some actually worthwhile!), ... just to stroke his own ego and pad his resume.
How about the state, once they waste the time and hours, name this as Frivolous, and then bill that idiot for wasted salary and wages the state wasted putting it through 'Due-Process'.
Mexico owes the usa. OK. From Arizona down to the ocean we will take it back. We use to own it. We will take it back and push all the illegals there to work our solar plants and drill for oil.
Mexico can't do that they signed a paper relinquishing all rights to Texas. Their supreme dictator signed it. He thought it was better than hanging from a tree near Houston.
Do they no thave enough to do with their time? Apprently not.
Heck, if we're going to re-name it, let's call it what it is: America's toilet bowl.
Oops! Please accept my most sincere apology, for what I think may have been a Freudian slip when I mistakenly used to term Congress instead of the state legislature.
Cygnus X-1, I consider myself thorughly corrected. Thank you so much.
Fact: Mexico is # 3 trading partner of USA behind Canada and China.
It has the largest border with the USA and has over 110 million people.
It's time to stop Mexico bashing and time to invest in Mexico relations. Drop the arrogance and veiled racism. It is not helping! Common Cents please
Mr Johnny Punish
Do you really think the Mexican/ US border is longer than the Canadian / US border?
Not to mention the other 80-some million who are here without visas or green cards.
80-some million? Care to document that?
Yes it kindy crooked down here in Texas which is more than 1200 miles long.
Sense, dear. No one has any cents these days.
@Head: I'd love to document it, but they're all undocumented!
I think you meant the busiest trading border...
I'll file this one right under my plan to rename the country of Panama.
From this day on, it shall be called "Berth".
And ships shall pass through the Berth Canal.
My mother said that was exactly what I felt like on the way out, maybe because I was "breech" back in the days before in-utero turning.
Well, I can be reached. That's just freakin' nuts.
You do know "America" is not a country. It is the western hemisphere.
Ever notice the biggest butchers of the language are also the "professional" media people who are supposed to know better. Says volumes about the current level of education in this country.
Anyone take issue with that?
How bloody stupid and arrogant can you get! This idiot reminds me of the Koreans who get upset at the name of the Sea of Japan.
And while we're at it, let's just rename Mississippi to "Outer Alabama."
Mississippi already has one of the worst educational systems in the country. I would venture to say that most students in Mississippi cannot find the Gulf of Mexico on a map. After this law is passed, none of them will be able to find the Gulf of Mexico on a map!
Now wait a min...why would you say something like that....we have great schools in Mississippi. I live on the coast and know exactly where the Gulf is and hate it no less but that's not the point...this discussion wasn't even about our school system it was about how stupid our politicians are for wanting to rename the gulf of Mexico. What gives you the right to say something so negative about people from Mississippi? Our school systems, depending on location are wonderful and I will never say otherwise. Let me guess your a northerner?
Lora if you are the only state to change the name it's gonna be kind of hard to mark out the part that is the Gulf of America from what the rest of us call the Gulf of Mexico. You border so little of it.
All that research to the contrary (50th of 51, if D.C. is counted) is just a vast right-wing (or left-wing) conspiracy, then?
To use the theory of "even a blind squirrel occasionally finds an acorn," I'm sure that even in 50th place there are still a few good schools in Mississippi, just not enough to pull them out of 50th place.
As humorous as this is, I'm annoyed that Congress is wasting time on this instead of actually doing any real work. Are we trying to be passive aggressive with Mexico for some reason?
OMG is this what we pay politicians to do? You mean to tell me that renaming a freakin body of water is in the best interests of his constituents? Really??? Either we get this crap OR we get bills introduced and approved that are CERTAIN to be challenged in court costing who(?) to obliterate the proposed law??
I think we should also re-name Mississippi and change it to "North Mexico." We'll have to take one star off the flag, but the Gulf can keep the name it already has since Mississippi will now be a part of Mexico so the "Gulf of America" name would be moot. Multiple problems solved.
I'm actually happy a Democrat is the one who suggested this tremendous waste of time and tax payer money. This way we can ALL agree that this is stupid and nobody will actually defend this nonsense.
This guy must be related to the Mississippi legislature that passed a law redefining PI as 3.0. It didn't work out very well.
What did they redefine cornbread as?
Buzzard Bread
yep - this is what America needs to fix the economy, reduce the debt, get people back to work......
/Face palm
There must not be too much to do in the state of Mississippi. You would think their politicians could spend a little more time trying to create jobs instead of renaming a gulf. But for the sake of fun, Mississippi why stop at the gulf. Please consider the following:
Mexico as "The land below America"
Canada as "The land above America"
China as "The land on the other side of America"
Cuba as "The island slightly south east of America"
And so on...
Is this the best he can do with his time? Hard to believe that our tax dollars are funding this guy's salary.
Rep. D. Stephen Holland from Mississippi...Yup he IS a moron!!
This the best one yet. It may be better than holding hearings on Roger Clemens steroid use. Politicains on both sides of the isle scream about the trouble we are in- yet it is so unimportant to them they spend their time considering this crap.
