DeMint opens CPAC: 'We don’t have shared goals with the Democrats'

Conservative Sen. Jim DeMint stressed an unyielding agenda for Republicans during an opening speech Thursday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

DeMint, a South Carolina senator and conservative icon, cast aspersions toward the notions of compromising with Democrats during a time in which political strife has dominated Capitol Hill.

"We don’t have shared goals with the Democrats. The democrats can’t cut spending. Their whole platform is based on promising more from government," DeMint told activists gathered in Washington, D.C.

"Every time we compromise with Democrats, we spend more, we borrow more, we grow government," he said.

DeMint skewered the Obama administration in his speech, the first address as part of the three-day summit.

DeMint dealt mainly in broad strokes, outlining a “decentralized” approach to health care and transportation, DeMint argued for familiar themes to conservatives, including state’s rights and budget prudence.

One hot topic that came up – the Keystone pipeline, which DeMint said would ensure tens of thousands of jobs.

“Who could say no?  Folks, we’re not talking about complicated political philosophy here,” he said.

Ah CPAC- where conservatives that are divided on political views can unite under the banner of hatred for our president and half of America. Where intolerance is celebrated and compromise is denigrated.

Cons seem to have so much respect for the founders-- BUT the founders built this nation on compromise-- its in the Constitution and the Declaration--- what would the founders think of Jim De Mint??

I only wish the election was tomorrow. After Demints brain dead comments it would be a democratic landslide. Whoever is tracking these posts for the repubs is probably pooping their pants as we speak. Looks like Obama and the congress will be able to do just about anything they like in the next few years.

If you don't believe class warfare has worked, just look at the shots being fired at each other on this stream. It saddens me what this country has become. It would benefit us all to pause a second before hitting the Post button and think about what we are about to say. My 15 year old son has friends spend the night and guess what. There is an Ausian kid, a black kid, and a white kid. They all treat each other with respect and love. Isn't this the way we as Americans should be treating each other? I am 53 and I have never seen so much hatred in this country. Anyway, have a safe and blessed weekend.

It was Karl Rove that invented the "blame the other guy for what you are doing" style of dirty politics...so if you wish to use the republican mantra of "class warfare", you should take a good look at what the republicans are doing.

I fail to understand your analogy regarding class warfare and your son's friends of different races. Are you equating "class" with "race"? How can you argue that we should all come together when you imply that those of a different race are of a different class? I appreciate the overall message you are trying to convey. I hope you can see that some may find your implication that if someone is of a different race, they must be of a different class, as condescending at best. Do you really see "class warfare" and racism as a single issue?

Dems vs Repbus, Progressive vs conservative.. Nothing wil ever be accomplished. DeMint proved that they don't want to work with the opposite party. Of course the Democrats are guilty of the same things.. The elected officials keep sliding further from the center in their ideological battles and we, the independents just shake our heads.

Bush inherited a federal budget surplus from Clinton and immediately drew it down. A war of choice in Iraq dumped hundreds of billions down the drain and cost 4000 American lives and hundreds of thousands of dead Iraqis. Demint is a delusional idiot and the people of SC who elected him are just a ignorant. South Carolina regularly gets more in Federal aid than they pay in taxes. This should stop immediately.

A war that both parties signed on for after reading and investigating the material from many sources. Playing into that was Saddam acting like he still had WMD's and doing nothing to counteract the information gather by several countries.

Stop trying to spin History to favor a political aim. That is disruptive and dangerous.

This discourse reminds me of my history courses and what was the political climate leading up to the First Civil War.

We were warned by no less an august person that President Washington who, in his farewell address, warned us about political parties, that they divide the loyalty of the people and interfere the running of democracy. He was so spot on. I see rabid hatred, ridicule and blatant lies from both sides of the debate (Here's looking at you Feisty).

From what I am seeing I believe we are in the opening stages of the Second Civil War just like the period from 1848 to 1859. I hope I am wrong, but f not May God help us all

The problem is the political party leadership. I believe we elect good people out of both parties who truly have the best interests of America in their heart. Once the reach Washington they realize they have a obligation to do what the party tells them. The carrot and stick is if you don't toe the line the party will oppose you at the next election. That's why no matter who you elect nothing ever really changes.

This isn't new, "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" was a perfect piece to show the things we hate about politics aren't new. Somehow we need to break the political party system so good Americans of all political beliefs can get elected and work together for the good of us all and not the good of the party.

My hope is that the Republicans, notice I don't call them conservatives, are completely squashed in the next election.

Somebody remind DeMint that the bush tax cut extension for the wealthy, demanded by the GOP using blackmail, cost this country almost $1T in more debt. Like FY 2009 deficit of $1.3T, which was bush's last budget, are the GOP wignuts calling this "Obama's debt" ?????

The math shows that since Obama has been in office, the GOP demands have added about $2T in debt! Typical.

            @Tom,

If you look that the record they years that the Democratic Party controlled Congress and therefore their bills resulted in a 35% increase in the national debit.

We don't have a revenue problem we have a spending problem. Even in the worse year of the great recession the Federal Government too in over $2 Trillion dollars yet spend over $3 Trillion each year.

As an independent I vote for the best candidate from the group the parties present. Unfortunately both parties are scrapping the bottom of the barrel.

You can call BS all you want. It's true.

The stated the goals of the 2012 election for the Republican Party were to make President Obama a one-term president and a hope that he would be a failure.

Senator Mitch McConnell stated early on that his main goal in the Senate was to make sure President Obama would be a one-term president.

He has that power by making sure that the Senate does not have a "super majority" on bills that the Democrats want to pass or that the president wants enacted. He has been very successful in his attempts. As a result, the Congress has the lowest favorable rating in the history of the nation.

The other mouthpiece for the Republican Party, Rush Limbaugh, consistently says that he wants the president to fail.

                President Washington on Political parties

Washington continues to advance his idea of the dangers of sectionalism and expands his warning to include the dangers of political parties to the government and country as a whole. His warnings took on added significance with the recent creation of the Democratic-Republican Party by Jefferson, to oppose Hamilton's Federalist Party, which had been created a year earlier in 1791, which in many ways promoted the interest of certain regions and groups of Americans over others. A more pressing concern for Washington, which he makes reference to in this portion of the address, was the Democratic-Republican efforts to align with France and the Federalist efforts to ally the nation with Great Britain in an ongoing conflict between the two European nations brought about by the French Revolution.

While Washington accepts the fact that it is natural for people to organize and operate within groups like political parties, he also argues that every government has recognized political parties as an enemy and has sought to repress them because of their tendency to seek more power than other groups and take revenge on political opponents.[11].

Moreover, Washington makes the case that "the alternate domination" of one party over another and coinciding efforts to exact revenge upon their opponents have led to horrible atrocities, and "is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism." From Washington's perspective and judgment, the tendency of political parties toward permanent despotism is because they eventually and "gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual."[12]

Washington goes on to acknowledge the fact that parties are sometimes beneficial in promoting liberty in monarchies, but argues that political parties must be restrained in a popularly elected government because of their tendency to distract the government from their duties, create unfounded jealousies among groups and regions, raise false alarms amongst the people, promote riots and insurrection, and provide foreign nations and interests access to the government where they can impose their will upon the country.

While it should be no surprise that ole Jim doesn't share Democratic values, what he's really saying is that compromise is out of the question. Well they are right.

They don't have shared goals. their goals are for the rich, the famous, the well to do with their secret Swiss bank accounts and cayman Island mail drops. They truly believe their secretaries should pay more an taxes than they, even when they earn far,far more.

Who can argue with that? And no one should bother. They have no sense of community-it's all about them..

Build your own bridge theysay. Yes, they can say that-and they can afford to.

We don't like regulations. Yes, we can have meth labs on every Conner-that's free enterprise.baby! Sure we can allow lead painted toys and salmonella in our food.

Why it's American to take that away-and bythe way ifwe want to have 6 feet of chicken manure in our Barns that'as our freedom to-and if we want to sell our guns to drug addicts-that's our freedom too.

As far as them-they are nothing to us.

Whoare we to care wether or not pregnant mother's have health insrance.,or people who are diabetic,or have Alzenhier's or Parkisons . We just don't are. It'sa not our problem.

Demint is right. they have no common values.

They have cult of the personality values. They make a cult of their personalities and give their selfishness the title of "values"-as if they are to only ones in the whole universe count. No one Else's value account-hence there are no shared values.there are no common interests-because the only interest that count are their own.

They have no common interest in clean air or clean water. No interest in common health care and disease prevention.

Demit is right. Conservatism is thecult of individual personality. It's all about them and only them. In psychological terms this called The Culture of Narcissism
