DeMint opens CPAC: 'We don’t have shared goals with the Democrats'

Conservative Sen. Jim DeMint stressed an unyielding agenda for Republicans during an opening speech Thursday at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).

DeMint, a South Carolina senator and conservative icon, cast aspersions toward the notions of compromising with Democrats during a time in which political strife has dominated Capitol Hill.

"We don’t have shared goals with the Democrats. The democrats can’t cut spending. Their whole platform is based on promising more from government," DeMint told activists gathered in Washington, D.C.

"Every time we compromise with Democrats, we spend more, we borrow more, we grow government," he said.

DeMint skewered the Obama administration in his speech, the first address as part of the three-day summit.

DeMint dealt mainly in broad strokes, outlining a “decentralized” approach to health care and transportation, DeMint argued for familiar themes to conservatives, including state’s rights and budget prudence.

One hot topic that came up – the Keystone pipeline, which DeMint said would ensure tens of thousands of jobs.

“Who could say no?  Folks, we’re not talking about complicated political philosophy here,” he said.

Thank-you DeMint and all you cpac speakers, for going on the record, that none of your party, cares about the American people, you just want to get the WH back, at all cost's. Many ads will come out of cpac, thanks for the many gift's handed to the DNC, and pacs supporting the President. Spin all you want faux noise, Americans hear just fine! LOL!

What we need is a person with experience in the White House not a seat warmer

There is no such thing as "experience in the White House" other than being president.

As a governor, there is executive experience, and dealing with legislatures. On the other hand, many state legislatures are simply rubber stamps for the executive branch. Plus, there is no opportunity for foreign policy experience.

As a member of Congress, you get legislative experience and experience with a variety of issues at the national (and international level). However, you don't get executive experience other than running a staff.

As a member of an administration's cabinet, you get experience in running an executive department. However, that department focuses on a relatively narrow set of issues.

The best that you can hope for is someone with a variety of experiences, but then again, the public tends to reject candidates like that. The most qualified person in the 2008 election would have been Bill Richardson, who was a US House member, the Secretary of Energy under Bill Clinton, and the Governor of New Mexico. But when he ran, he pretty much got blown out of the water in New Hampshire and Iowa and dropped out shortly thereafter.

The most qualified presidents we had in recent memory were Richard Nixon and George H W. Bush. Both had executive and legislative experience, although the executive experience was limited to the vice presidency, which had limited impact. However, both had very turbulent presidencies, albeit for different reasons.

Thus, when you bash Obama for having limited WH experience before he took office you can just as easily say the same thing about every single Republican candidate that has been out there.

Even that Goldberg guy that is on O'Reilly a lot, said the GOP is full of racist's, sexists, and bigots. He said he has had enough.

Goldberg never said that. Calling millions of Americans racist, sexist and bigoted is about as stupid as anything I have read on these posts. If anyone is bigoted, hateful or intolerant it is you and not an entire political party. Nice try though!

Bernie Goldberg said that on O'Reilly's show last week.......go look it up....I could not believe he said it either.

A fight for middle earth for sure, right out of the Lord of the Rings. First, DeMint who wishes to reduce jobs for sinners beginning with gay teachers and then unwed mother teachers, but allows unwed dads to teach - right out of the good ole boy network. Only DeMint knows which of the ten broken commandments will reduce job numbers after that - won't be adultery - too many REPS candidates would lose their jobs. Oh, yes, then we have the new REBs dream workforce model based on the illegal drug and sex trade industries - no rights, no voice, no healthcare, no safetfy, no pension, no retirement, no fair wage. Oh, yes let's not forget the "buyer beware" nation crawling into bed with the persecuting theocracy. It's a mad, mad, world.

It must have been the Democrats that made a Republican Congress and a Republican President spend money like a drunken sailor from 2000-2006. TransCanada can't even build the pipeline across Canada. The canadians don't want it built there either. TransCanada says the the pipeline would provide 2,500 to 3,500 temporary jobs and less than 100 permanent jobs. Where these guys come with 10's of thousands of jobs is a mystery.

DeMint is totally out of touch with the American people. The only people who see the world like him are a few extreme individuals with their own agendas. He is a divider not a uniter. You have to think and come from the same background to be a part of his exclusive club. Most people would choose to live in a diversified world because that is what makes this country great.

Any gop strategy must consider the 350% increase in population every 80 years. Unless a catholic like santorum with 7 kids or rubio with 4 kids becomes president. With these world leaders, don't expect 25B in 2090 up from 7B today, but santorum-300B & rubio-110B.

Separate church from state. It helped make the US a model for most countries (Hitler and Stalin didn't like it). The GOP has become a puppet being led by the Jester.

Our only hope is to ADULT UP, give and take and find the survival zone in between (it works for planets!). The capatolized words may eliminate the current Congress, they're just there for the money. AMERICANS people! Americans can carry it on their back, take the heat, think "What have I done for my community and my country today! Not, "I'm female and wasn't allowed to fly because of it" or "ORCAS are slaves". Apparently, "a mind is a terible thing to waste."

The Constitution doesn't say seperate church from state, it says:

The First Amendment provides that "Congress shall make no law respecting an
establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof

Big difference, guess they don't teach that in grade school any longer.

The GOP always love to play "holier-than-thou" while choosing to do the most un-Christian and anti-American thing. If you haven't been sleeping,...you know the GOP is in it for the corporations and the wealthy they serve,...and they have no interest in governing for the people.

Their newest ploy is to act like their "my way of the highway" intransigent rhetoric is somehow the moral high road. It's so ironic,...that it does "the Jedi mind trick" on some people and they are willing to go directly against their own best interests and those of their fellow citizen.

                              Bull !! Phooey !!

WE WOULD ALL DO WELL TO REMEMBER THE GW BUSH REGIME AND WHAT LIFE WAS LIKE UNDER HIS ELITIST RULE. The power and money funneled quickly into the hands of the wealthy. Sure,...you got an $800 check per year, but everything the decider wanted happened. It was bull dozed through and you "had just better get used to hit". He bypassed democracy. He gave tax breaks to the corporations,...underfunding the government so as to set the stage for the current showdown we are in regarding the social safety net. His grandfather never wanted that to begin with,...so GW was going to "make it right" according the ideas of his blue blood grandfather.

You can hear the COORDINATED message shift by all of the Republican pundits. This happens periodically,...I would guess,...when it is decided by the conservative leaders that there a different propagandist message to carpet bomb the audience with that might be effective.

They are trying to appeal to the population by underlining that they are unapologetically against anything other than unbridled free market capitalism. Sorry folks,....all government is bad, except the things that continue to help make our constituents proportionately more and more wealthy. If you are not in the top few perecent,...you'd have to be insane to go this much against your own best interests. If you "win big" - great !! If you are from the upper middle of the pack and down >>>> "The GOP has nothing for you". Their attitude is "you were free to win,...but didn't" YOU ARE ON YOUR OWN. If we are forgetful enough to vote the conservatives BACK into power to continue their elitist assault on the middle and working class,.....it IS NOT going to be pretty.

If tax breaks for the rich generates jobs,....where are the jobs ? This is a myth. There is no trickle down.

Times have become harder and harder. Wages are stagnant,...benefits are disappearing,....there are more and more fees and charges from banks and creditors and any company who can force them upon you. Jobs are getting shipped off seas. YET,....there is more and more of the REAL profit of this country funneling into the hands of the top few percent of the population.

The conservatives will tell you that a free market "SETS YOU FREE" to make your million, BUT in this hyper competitive and EXPENSIVE economy,....what is the likelihood that a high percentage of the loyal and hard workers that drive the productivity and, therefore wealth of the top few percent,...will be able to retire or even care for themselves in their old age ? I say,...NOT MUCH.

The guiding hand of government,...per Abraham Lincoln,....is there to do for people ONLY what they can't do for themselves. THE MAJOR ISSUE that confronts Americans today is corporate greed and excess and runaway power. If you think for one moment that when the rich and connected get more and more that they are thinking of putting one cent more than is absolutely necessary back into the rest of the population,......you are dreaming.

These Republicans are giving the Democrats gold nuggets. If only they are smart enough to use it. Picture August 2012, the Dems start running ads like this:

Announcer: Pres Obama and the Democrats want to move the country forward

Cut to shot of Demint from CPAC saying: "We don't have shared goals with the Democrats."

Announcer: Pres Obama saved the auto industry. The Republicans wanted it to die.

Cut to shot of Demint from CPAC saying: "We don't have shared goals with the Democrats."

                                      ...you get the picture

Apparently, many if not most of you don't realize how politics work here in the South, from whence Mr. DeMint hails.

All one has to do to get elected or re-elected in a Southern state is to call up memories of past times when life was a little easier, proclaim they're religious, tell you that your problems are the result of those evil liberals, and then say "GOD bless America!" and you get into office.

We're about to have a Natalie Mains moment here, so buckle your seat belts:

I am embarrassed to be from the same state as Mr. DeMint.

Given all the progress the President has made in the face of the strongest obstructionism since the Johnson administration, is a testament to just how wrong the GOP policies are. In this modern era, GOP stands for Greed Only Party, since they want the already-diminishing Middle Class to foot the bills, lose even more ground to poverty, all the while giving banks, corporations, and the wealthy all the breaks their money can buy. They clearly don't like the average American, do they?

How can the GOP claim to love America when they so obviously don't like average Americans?.

Charles; Refreshing to see a (i guess) republican who can actually see the truth and not go around and spew the hate of their party.Republicans need more of you to bring about the good ideas from your party.Time and again they have shown to be a total disappointment

UAW, I am an Independent. I have never voted a party line, and never will. I vote for the candidates I think will either do the most good for the average American, or do the least evil to the country at large.

In this case, the evidence is clear to me that the GOP holds to nothing that will help the average American. I'm smart enough to figure things out, and research them on my own.

You know this country is in trouble when the GOP clown DEMINT even has anyone listening to him. The tea party and GOP are DEAD in the water. Obama who most Dems do not want again will annihalate anyone the GOP[Gay Old Party] can come up with. When the likes of Gingrich, Santorum and Romney are the opponents the Dems can laugh all the way to the White House Again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad someone is recognize the truth. Between Democrats and Republicans there are no common values and there is no room to compromise. This fighting is going to keep going forever until one side nuts up or shuts up. That's why I don't do politics anymore. It's a losing game.

Also appearing in a cameo: Michelle Bachmann as Phyllis Schaffly and a special performance by Arizona Governor Jan Brewer as "The Wicked Witch of the West" from the Wizard of Oz. Don't miss this all-star special as Republicans beat the drums of hate and alienate every major voting block in America. It's Culture Wars II - Be there - or Be Square!!

DeMint was able to leave the plantation long enough to do something. Him and the "Self-Righteous State" want to drag us back to the 19th century.

This bunch is so out of touch with the main stream it's not funny.

Nor are we self righteous, if you disagree with him on policy that is fine lets have a discussion, and who is in the "mainstream" Barney Frank- PLEASE
