Obama signs off on Super PAC donation encouragement

President Obama personally signed off on his campaign's decision to actively encourage donations to Democratic Super PAC Priorities USA, according to senior campaign officials who spoke on a conference call with reporters Tuesday morning.

But an official would not characterize the tone of Obama's agreement to back a policy that is at odds with his previous vocal opposition to the Citizens United decision that allows Super PACs to solicit unlimited donations.

Conversations among top advisers about the need to "lend support" to the outside fundraising effort have been going on for "weeks," and the decision was made after a review of FEC filings from the Super PAC committees supporting the GOP presidential candidates, officials said.

As a result of the decision, some White House officials, campaign aides, and cabinet members will appear at Priorities USA events to "amplify [Obama's] message" but will not directly solicit donations. The president, First Lady, and vice president will not attend any Priorities USA events, however.

The campaign said Tuesday that it will not encourage donations to a related 501(c)4 organization that does not disclose its donors to the FEC as the Priorities USA SuperPAC will.

The reversal opens Obama -- who has long bemoaned the influx of money into the political process -- to accusations of hypocrisy as his campaign now hopes to lure big donors to the fundraising body founded by former White House aide Bill Burton.

Officials maintain that the decision "not to unilaterally disarm" by rejecting Super PACs is simply a response to the millions expected to be spent by GOP interests to fight Obama's re-election.

"We can't afford hundreds of millions of dollars by corporate special interests on the air drowning out our message, while we're fighting hand-to-hand on the ground," said one official.

Just so, Mr. President.

The Obama re-election campaign is for constitutional amendment. But right now, this is the reality.

There cannot be two sets of rules for the 2012 election campaigns - where Republicans get the OK for unlimited spending while Democrats roll over and get steam-rollered.

Ain't going to happen!

We have to face the reality of the law AS IT NOW STANDS.

(btw. Mr Romney is extremely funded by Big Oil & Gas.)

Backhouse

Don't worry about Big oil Obama is backed by the big banks and wallstreet and already has a BILLION to campaign with. (guess it's not enough though since he still wants super PAC money) Don't worry POTUS is much too corrupt to get steamrolled by someone with more money.

Incase any miss this article on Bush and the bailout:

“I’d do it again,” proclaimed Bush, speaking to the annual convention of the National AutomobileDealers Association.

The bailout, which ultimately totaled $85 billion, was originally begun during the waning days of the Bush administration. With a specific rescue effort rejected by Congress, the former Commander-in-Chief decided to tap into a separate, $700 billion fund Capitol Hill did approve for the bailout of Wall Street and the banking industry.

“Sometimes circumstances get in the way of philosophy,” said the ex-president, during his speech in Las Vegas, referring to his normal stand in favor of free trade. “If you make a bad decision, you ought to pay,” he said, referring to the collapse of both General Motors and Chrysler.

But Bush also noted that coming on top of the failure of Lehman Brothers, the meltdown of the banking industry and the collapse of the housing market, a painful shift in policy was needed.

“I didn’t want there to be 21 percent unemployment,” he stressed, echoing forecasts at the time that the loss of GM, Ford and the automotive lenders also covered by the bailout could lead to the loss of 1 million jobs.

No better? It's not peaches & cream; but, it is Better. Our problem in Michigan is the Republican dominated House/Senate. They are killing us! And, once again, it is DeVos $$ behind it All. The truth is that the Capitalists ARE trying to take over our country and US! Obama is NOT a vulture, croney capitalist and the only way we will stop this takeover is we raise the money to fight "fire with fire". Go Obama!!

That's right... who needs honesty and integrity?!?! Who needs a president that you can trust and is not a hypocrite?!?! Who needs a president that is willing to take responsibility for ALL of the things they do good and bad?!?! Go Dear Leader Go! The end justifies ANY means necessary!!! If that means lying, cheating, stealing or even killing (do a search for Donald Young, Larry Bland and Nate Spencer)... so be it! We progressives MUST WIN AT ANY COST! After all progressive socialism leading to communism is the American way!

Interesting how it was OK to have two sets of rules when in the 08 election he said he would take public funding if Mccain did. Low and behold Mccain took public funding and Obama decided he HAD to use a different set of rules for himself so he could get more money. Obama is just another politician.

Feisty--the Republicans tipped their hands by all of their spending against their own fellow Republicans starting in Iowa. And Newt has been saying they are lying and distorting his record. Well---if they will do it to one of their own, what will they do to the man they have made defeating their number one priority since the day after the election in 2008?

        @#2.1,

GOP/Koch/ALEC/Norquist have worked long and hard to put the funding in place to buy up the US Congress.

They got their stooges into the Supreme Court and they pulled off Citizens United in early 2010.

With that, they poured money into Scott Brown right away. Then they poured money into the Tea Party No-Nothings via an entirely false/fake show of a grass-root movement, that was funded by BIG OIL.

Big Oil/Koch is now funding Romney and so he beat Gingrich 5-1 at SC.

ALEC/GOP/Koch Governors are busy getting rid of the vote and getting rid of Unions, getting rid of the voices of ordinary American people.

IN YOUR DREAMS, WE ARE GOING TO TAKE IT LYING DOWN.

From all I've read, our President will have close to a billion dollars in his war chest, apart from any super pacs. Without a primary challenger, this is money that can be devoted to political advertising between the convention and the general. Can you imagine the power of a billion dollars worth of ads, each and every one ending with "I'm President Obama and I approve this message". Yet you folks above claim he needs to fight fire with fire, that he needs a 50 million dollar super pac to put him over. He could have chosen to fight fire with water, and a billion dollars can buy a helluvalota water. He could still have overwhelmed his adversary and any GOP super pacs, while maintaining his message against super pacs. Instead, to paraphrase Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, he chose poorly.

About the only way Republicans will ever agree to change campaign finance laws is if they think current law favors Democrats.

If Democratic leaning Super Pacs beat Republican Super Pacs in the race for the money you'll be seeing a lot more willingness to compromise on the GOP side. I know, fat chance. But you never know.

He bailed out big government, big unions, big banking, big business .... Obama has taken billions of tax payer to re-pay his billionaire bundler buddies, has even sent money overseas to support their projects in places like Finnland.

Obama has literally taken tax payer stimulus money to arm the Mexican drug cartels with 2,000 AKs!

Gas prices, food prices have skyrocketed under Obama's policies .... home equity has plunged - all much worse since Obama took office. The median income has DROPPED TWICE AS MUCH UNDER OBAMA AS IT DID DURING THE ACTUAL RECESSION UNDER BUSH!

The GINI index (wealth gap) was flat under Bush and has taken off under Obama.

Obama cares about the middle class?

Do they buy those $38,000 a plate dinners?

What has Obama done for the middle class?

And it took all that "bail out" money to create jobs that the tax cuts for the rich were unable to create. By giving the "bail out" money and so forth to companies, those companies were able to hire middle class people who will resume their contribution to the tax income of the country and will spend money that will further stimulate hiring in small, medium and large businesses alike.

Hey, I am willing to go along with the idea of tax cuts creating jobs but I haven't seen it happen for several years. Since the tax cuts obviously haven't worked it is time to try something else. What President Obama has tried is workign. Albeit slower than most folks would like we are still seeing job growth and not stagnation or backward movement.

Bob - What has Obama done for the middle class? Absolutely nothing! He's not doing a darn thing to fix the ecomony... in fact he's hurting it. His administration is lying to the American public constantly... The latest lie involves some 280,000 reported new jobs generated in January...

Impossible! There is absolutely no way that many jobs could have been generated. Oh, I know, I'm just a RWNJ just spouting off because I don't want Obama to look good. Well I could give a rats ass if I don't want Obama to look good. I don't want him lying to the American public. So why do I say impossible? What do I know that the liberals do not?

Income tax revenue is down over last year. How can you have job growth with a decrease in tax revenue? What would be the tax generated on 280,000 new jobs? Enough to raise the levels over last years revenues... and it's been reported that the revenue is down... way down....

something smells like rotten cod flakes... and the liberals are eating it up.

"Super Pacs are garbage but because of their influence, the president is left with no choice."

Really? You mean he can't win based on his record? The billions he receives from Goldman/Sacs, AIG, the unions and the lobbyists he has for "bundlers" is not going to be enough to win?

If Obama's bail-outs, multiple stimulous packages, health insurance reform, etc. had been successful (or at least popular) he would not need over a billion dollars to get re-elected. Think about that..... he has done such a terrible job that he needs over a BILLION dollars to have any chance of being re-elected. That is truly pathetic.

I'm getting a big laugh out of right-wing posts on this subject. They're trying to call the president a flip-flopper, though I suppose that's better than some of the other disrespectful things they say and do, and compared to their candidates, really?

It's obvious to anyone with half a brain (that's the qualifier) that while the president fights fire with fire, he and the Dems are still working on ways to get Citizen's United under control -- You know, legislation the Teapublicans have been blocking. In fact (more irony), if conservatives don't like Super PACS they should vote for the president and the Dems who are trying to lesson the effects of this disastrous right-wing ruling.

In the meantime, I hope the GOP/TPers are enjoying the PACs in their primary. You made your bed, now sleep in it! May the primary get even more ugly--whoohoo!

Really? Fabienne44. You find it funny the the Repubs held the President "Hostage" with the Bush Tax Cuts. I find it revolting that the Repubs/Teabaggers would only extend the unemployment extensions if the President signed the Bush Tax Cuts. So anyone that can't see the Republican Party as anything but a puppet for the 1% is truely blind!

LOL. Democratic silence, bought and paid for by the super wealthy.

Stop rationalizing it, the democrats can no longer deny what the republicans have been saying from the beginning. Capitalism runs on money.

Democrats have always known that, but they deny it to look good to the poor.

Democrats care more about the poor person's vote than his actual well being.

If those bills that are "trying to get Citizens United under control" also eliminate unions ability to make political donations then I am all for them. Deciding who can make political donations should be a very easy task. If you can legally register to vote then you can make political donations. I don't know of any corporation or union that has a voters registration card.

You cannot compete with the corrupt right wingers without playing by their rules. Once the Supreme Court voted to let PACs run the elections for their buddies on the right, we all lost. So, Obama has to allow PAC money or he'll be outspent by the Koch Brothers, foreign companies, etc. Grow up! If it was the other way around all you little right wingers would be singing a different tune!

You are correct because prior to the Citizens United decision only the democrats, through the unlimited support of unions, had not yet "lost". Now the playing field is "fair" just like you pathetic progressives claim to like it.

The Republicans and "Activists" Supreme Court made the decision that Corporations are People. I am glad that President Obama is going to fight fire with Fire.

The amount of $500,000, 000 is not true. These Republicans and their Corporations plan to throw MORE MONEY THAN GOD to defeat this President. The Hate on the Republican side is so great for this President that they are BLINDED to trying to get the Country back on its Economic Feet just to defeat him. That is the Republican’s No. One Goal, as stated by the Senate Republican Leader, Mitch McConnell. They will DISRUPT, DISTORT, LIE and Total DISRESPECT for the OFFICE of THE President, as long as he is President.

Republicans call these big donors JOB CREATORS. So instead of trying to defeat the President, why don’t they CREATE JOBS WITH THIS EXTRAORDINARY AMOUNT OF MONEY?

Newt wants so badly to be the Nominee to stand on the National Stage to call the President all kinds of racist vile names using other words, that he is CURRENTLY going against the Republican Establishment to do so.

I think it is a good Civics Lesson in how, when voters stay at home and not pay attention, they get VIPERS. The Corporation are People Law was just perfect to work on Republicans First. Republicans pushed this so I am grateful they were the TEST CASE for this TAKING DEMOCRACY OUT OF THE HANDS of the Voters.

While the GOP Super PACs are spending money in the primaries, the Dem Super PACs just collect more and more money for the Autumn to beat them at their own game.

If I remember right on Feb 1, 2012, on First Read there was an article where Senator Charles Schumer was going to hold hearings in the Rules committee on the super PACs. He and the democrats have been complaining that it gave the Republicans an advantage.

Wonder if he is still going to hold the Senate hearings, I would bet he doesn't as he would have to call Obama's supporters to testify.

It's been a while since I posted here. But it never fails to humor me when the 'church' of the GOP try to say Obama was the orchestrator of the bailouts done in this country. The FACT is, it started with Bush and Paulson. Doesn't anyone here from the right remember- revisionist memory I guess- where the TARP bailouts started? Fact is, it started with Henry Paulson, a true Wall Streeter, asking congress with a 4 page contract to protect himself from prosecution as he was giving millions to his banking freinds in NY. This was the last of the fear mongering ideas from Bush and Cheney. So to insinuate Obama was the leader of the bailouts is patently false.

It's easy to say the President is a liar, not from this country- you name it. I guess you have to say something to try to damage him during this election year. Most Americans don't buy it, they know he is a decent honest man. But the real problem is, the GOP has no viable candidate to unseat him!! Mitt Romney is truly the worst flip-flopper ever to run for president, a serial liar who changes positions almost daily. Even Ann Coulter says Republicans will lose with him as the party candidate. Then there's Gingrich, all blather but way short on ethics at home and while serving in Congress. Paul consistently runs last in nearly every primary and would lose by landslide as the candidate. Santorum's views are inconsistent. He wants government to stay out of Americans pockets but doesn't mind getting himself and his type of government into Americans bedrooms. I keep hearing him about making abortion and contraception illegal, but never hear a word as to how he'd help those under these policies take care of these children, or how he'd find good homes for them. Show a complete agenda or you're just appealing to the extreme right. His views cost him his Senate seat in a landslide and it wasn't just because of a wave election either. That ain't getting it done in November anyway.

Carl Rove, the original Turdblossom, and his Crossroads super PAC are dangerous to this country. They appeal to the lowest denominator of people's mentality. Because Obama was forced to relent his position on super PAC's only proves his intelligence of fighting this destructive Supreme Court decision with one of his own. How else would he be able to try to change this erroneous decision if he was battling from the sideline? He did what he had to do!

Though Republicans are at a distinct disadvantage because Obama already has Move-On, Acorn, not to mention liberal mainstream media. Instead of "puff-piece" images of Obama standing in front of the American flag, looking stoic, we will get REAL images paid for by super-pacs. Hit piece images of Obama flushing bags of taxpayer money down the toilet with a sign that reads, "alternative green energy". And Moochelle on a spending spree on Rodeo Dr, paying for $2400 cocktail dresses for the next State of the Union, with a credit card that reads, Capital One Taxpayer Paid. And stepping into Air Force Two on a staircase made up of taxpayer backs, and loading tax dollars into the cargo holds, waving goodbye as she flies off to another exotic vacation. Images of Rev.Wright pounding his fist on a pulpit screaming "GD America" and the Obamas smiling in the pews, sitting next to Bill Ayers. Yeah I see no problem at all with Super-Pacs, especially if Obama is finally VETTED for all America to see. This is gonna be good...............

So far, President Obama has raised 60% of his contributions from individual people with donations of 200 or less. Mitt Romney has raised 9% of his money from individuals, the rest from his billionaire and millionaire friends. Carl Rove had a meeting with a group of rich people last week and expects each one to give at least 1,000,000 and prefers 10,000,000. This is the definition of communism, not democracy. Check it out... Google the definitions. of both. When a small group of people decide and control government and elections that's communism. Newt felt the power of money in Iowa and Florida, being outspent 5 to 1. Even Rick Santorum pointed out after sweeping the last 3 states, that democracy worked as Mitt Romney didn't spend much money in Missouri or Minnesota, which Rich won by 20 to 30 points. In Colorado, Mitt spent the most and lost by less than 10 points. Is this the kind of country we want, to be bought and paid for ? President Obama called out the Supreme Court at the 2010 State of the Union for the Citizens United decision, predicting what is happening now. It was the GOP that took this to the Supreme Court in order to get free spending by corporations and the rich to control elections, not the DEMS or the President. President Obama had no choice if he wants to compete this election cycle as the numbers above show. President Obama is committed to changing this decision by the Supreme Court and once re-elected will work to get it done. Make no mistake, this country is being taken over by Corporations and the rich.
